Hey, Memphis Jones.
[1]
Check this out.
[2]
It looks like we're about to walk into a old mechanic shop.
[5]
And y'all, just like everything else there's another story just
[8]
underneath.
[8]
We're actually about to walk into a museum.
[10]
A collection of memories, and experiences,
[13]
all circling around one guy.
[14]
A Hollywood stunt driver, professional motorcycle racer,
[18]
collector, and purveyor of all things American automotive.
[21]
Jeff Milburn
[22]
Y'all come with me, and let's get his story on Car Stories.
[31]
Man, here we are at Jeff Milburn's shop.
[33]
Honestly, I've been in this place just a couple of minutes,
[36]
I can't believe how much there is still left to see.
[38]
And here he is himself, Jeff Milburn.
[40]
I'm so happy to meet you.
[41]
How are you?
[42]
I'm fine, how about you man?
[43]
I'm great.
[44]
I'm so excited to be here and about.
[45]
I've never been in a place like this.
[47]
This is just outside of my-- my usual realm of experience.
[49]
Yeah.
[50]
But this is, you live and breathe this stuff.
[51]
Tell me about, just this shop.
[53]
Tell me about this.
[54]
Well I literally live and breathe it
[56]
because I live upstairs.
[57]
You live upstairs, man?
[58]
Yeah, I do.
[59]
Like this is your world.
[60]
Yeah this is-- this is definitely my world.
[61]
This is incredible.
[62]
Now, I'm looking at this, and this is obviously
[64]
a working mechanic shop.
[66]
Where does that start?
[67]
Like, in your life, how did you know that's like your DNA?
[69]
That's your heartbeat?
[70]
I don't know.
[71]
You know, um, I think cars and motorcycles are
[74]
sort of my way to have my own thing away from my parents.
[76]
Wow.
[77]
Does that make any sense?
[78]
Sure.
[78]
It's like your own world.
[79]
Yeah.
[79]
When I was younger, when I was 13 or so,
[81]
I think I got one of my first minibikes to that effect.
[84]
And, and it was my own little world because my mom
[88]
didn't want anything to do with cars, and motorcycles,
[90]
and stuff.
[91]
And my step dad had his--
[92]
he worked in the oil field-- and it was like--
[94]
--Wow.
[95]
--my own little world.
[96]
Man, so like you're on the bike, and literally no looking back.
[99]
Literally and figuratively.
[100]
Yeah.
[101]
Like this is, this is, you-- this is your path.
[103]
Oh yeah.
[103]
But what's amazing to me, is how many things you have collected.
[106]
Obviously, this isn't something that can be done, you know,
[108]
in a year or two.
[108]
No, no.
[109]
That doesn't just happen overnight.
[110]
Well what are like, what are some
[111]
of like your favorite pieces?
[112]
I'm just like, I'm so curious about everything I'm seeing,
[114]
because I'm sure there's a story behind it.
[116]
I don't really like signs that sort of have a brand on them.
[119]
You know like, a lot of people maybe they
[121]
collect a certain car brand or a certain you know.
[125]
I like signs that actually say something's happening.
[127]
Does that make--
[128]
--yeah. Absolutely.
[128]
You know, they're all my favorites.
[130]
Well, you don't want to exclude one.
[131]
Yeah. That's good.
[132]
If I say one thing or the other, I--
[134]
I mean the truck that I'm leaning on this
[136]
was how I used to get to work when I worked in the car
[138]
dealership as a mechanic.
[139]
So, this means a lot to me.
[141]
I want to talk about these motorcycles.
[142]
Can we check it out?
[143]
Yeah, yeah.
[144]
Cool.
[144]
Jeff, I'm telling you man, everything here
[147]
has got a story.
[148]
And I want to know the story behind this stuff
[149]
because I've never seen anything like this.
[151]
This thing here reminds me of one of my favorite motorcycles
[155]
on display down in Memphis at Elvis' home Graceland.
[157]
He was a collector.
[158]
Oh it's definitely an Elvis style motorcycle.
[160]
Can you sort of tell me a little bit about this?
[161]
It's beautiful.
[162]
Yeah I mean I have a bunch of motorcycles.
[164]
This motorcycle I haven't had very long.
[165]
And all my friends know that my favorite color is purple.
[169]
I like black and purple.
[170]
This motorcycle, my best friend Oliver
[173]
was at a swap meet, sends me a picture, and says,
[176]
look at this thing.
[177]
I'm like, hey wait that's a '65 pan head, which
[179]
is my favorite year, 65.
[180]
And so next thing I know, he--
[183]
I'm looking at this picture closer
[184]
and I'm like, wait that's a purple one.
[186]
And I'm thinking, well somebody painted
[187]
it purple because, as far as I knew,
[189]
they didn't make that color purple.
[190]
Yeah.
[191]
He kind of researched it pretty quick,
[193]
found out that that's actually a special order purple.
[195]
Oh gosh.
[195]
That was painted in 1965.
[198]
And I just texted him back and I said, bring that motorcycle
[200]
back to Texas.
[201]
[LAUGHS]
[201]
I don't care what that motorcycle cost.
[203]
It's an original paint purple '65.
[205]
And that fool brought this motorcycle back to me.
[207]
So authentic and original.
[208]
Yeah, it's very authentic.
[210]
Man, it's not just about owning the thing and having the thing.
[213]
It's the love of the story behind the thing.
[215]
That's why this is such a wonderful experience for me.
[217]
[CHUCKLES] This is really fascinating.
[218]
OK.
[218]
Listen, we've got to talk about your '65 Chevy.
[220]
Can we walk over there and see it?
[221]
I'm ready.
[222]
Let's walk over there.
[223]
Check out this truck, y'all.
[223]
Amazing.
[224]
[MUSIC PLAYING]
[225]
I've owned this truck since 1988.
[228]
Uh.
[228]
1988.
[229]
'88.
[229]
Yes. Yeah, that goes back doesn't it?
[231]
Uh, yes.
[231]
Let's open it.
[232]
We got a lot of people watching this video.
[233]
This is the truck that I drove to work every day, back then.
[237]
It's also the truck when I got my job working on a Top Fuel
[239]
car, on a big professional race car team--
[241]
--Wow.
[241]
--I drove this to Fort Worth every day.
[243]
So this--
[244]
--This--
[244]
--is like the thing that guarded you.
[245]
This, this-- --got you into your future.
[246]
This is what got me there, yeah.
[247]
That would make it easy.
[248]
I mean, in my world this, to me, is what
[251]
carried me to work every day.
[252]
Just the dual way.
[253]
I love it.
[254]
And I am, I am never getting rid of this truck.
[257]
I hear you.
[257]
I've got a million people say, ah well you know this.
[259]
There's no amount of money that can take this truck from me.
[262]
Yes.
[263]
I've had a few different motors in it.
[265]
I've changed it around a little bit.
[266]
Yeah.
[267]
Stuff like that.
[267]
Man, let's, let's crack this baby open and have a look,
[270]
can we?
[270]
You wanna have a look at my hot rod motor here?
[272]
This is, we're kind of getting into the deeper levels here.
[276]
There you are.
[277]
Wow.
[278]
It's so clean man.
[279]
I like to keep my stuff clean.
[281]
Back when we were racing in NASCAR, there was a saying,
[283]
there's a million reasons not to run good,
[285]
but there's no reason not to look good.
[287]
This is a small black Chevrolet, early model one, two piece,
[292]
rear main steal.
[293]
It has been bored and stroked.
[296]
So it's a 383.
[296]
It's stroked out to 383.
[298]
Originally, it would have been a 350.
[300]
I mean that engine and this truck
[302]
was made in Detroit, Michigan.
[304]
I think it, when I think back the United
[307]
States has a reputation.
[309]
It hadn't been around as long as all these other.
[311]
But what they do--
[312]
--Wow-- --they do right.
[312]
Wow.
[313]
You know, if it's done in the United States it's done right.
[315]
The love that I have for pop culture, and music, and history
[318]
being from Memphis you know I love rock and roll.
[320]
I love the way that the blues became rock and roll.
[322]
I love where rock and roll went.
[324]
And when I get to put my hands on something,
[326]
or be in the presence of something that's original--
[329]
Yeah.
[329]
Then, then it, it's an inspiring feeling.
[331]
Like I feel like the ceiling suddenly pops off, and I can,
[333]
I can do that myself.
[335]
Right.
[335]
Yeah. Is that like the thing?
[336]
Yeah there's no-- it drives me crazy when someone says,
[340]
that's going to be, that's like a Cadillac,
[342]
or that's the Cadillac of something.
[343]
No.
[344]
Cadillac-- --man.
[345]
--Cadillac is Cadillac because it's the nicest car made.
[347]
Incredible.
[347]
You can't be the next Cadillac, because you can't
[349]
be the first one, you know.
[350]
Incredible.
[351]
Every single thing about Car Stories everything
[354]
that we're really searching for, and looking for, and trying
[356]
to uncover, and share has got to be 100% original and authentic.
[361]
Or there's no sense talking about it.
[362]
Take it from Jeff.
[363]
[LAUGHTER]
[364]
I agree.
[365]
I mean, it has to be authentic.
[366]
Awesome.
[367]
It's like I'm stepping back in time here guys.
[369]
I'm literally hopping into Jeff's life right here.
[372]
[ENGINE REVVING]
[374]
[LAUGHS]
[377]
Wow.
[379]
Man, listen.
[381]
I think of the things that we have
[382]
in common, when I hear an engine like that I kind of want
[385]
to go for a ride.
[386]
Wouldn't it be cool if we took this thing out?
[387]
We can take it around the block one time.
[389]
Ya'll hop in with us, man.
[390]
Car Stories.
[415]
Here we go!
[417]
[ENGINE REVVING]
[419]
Oh yeah, yeah yeah!
[422]
Woohoo.
[422]
[LAUGHS]
[423]
[ENGINE REVVING]
[429]
Woo.
[431]
Whoa.
[433]
Hey listen, if I have ever enjoyed meeting somebody more
[435]
I do not remember it.
[436]
Thank you for letting me hang out with you at the shop, Jeff.
[438]
It was my pleasure.
[439]
Awesome, man.
[440]
Listen, I got to tell you I've had so much fun with him,
[442]
and I've learned a lot too.
[443]
This car y'all, it doesn't just drive you to the drop off
[445]
and the pickup.
[446]
It drives you into your relationships,
[448]
and your memories.
[449]
Your story!
[450]
Hey I'm Memphis Jones, and this has been Jeff Milburn's car story.
[453]
What's yours?
