THE F-35 | Where the World's Most Advanced Fighter Jet is Built - YouTube
Channel: Sam Eckholm
[0]
what's up everyone my name is sam eckham
[2]
and today i'm at lockheed martin's f-35
[4]
fighter jet production plant this is a
[6]
place that very few people have had
[8]
access to film at
[9]
but today i'm going to show you what it
[11]
takes to assemble one of the world's
[13]
most technologically
[14]
advanced aircraft the f-35 lightning
[22]
[Music]
[28]
ii
[31]
[Music]
[32]
now if you don't already know the f-35
[34]
is no ordinary fighter jet it was
[36]
designed to maintain air dominance for
[38]
years to come
[40]
with its stealth characteristics sensor
[42]
fusion and weapons loadouts
[43]
believe me when i say that this thing is
[45]
pretty badass but before we get ahead of
[47]
ourselves i think it's important that we
[49]
take a little bit of a step back
[50]
to learn about the history of the f-35
[52]
and everything that it's really capable
[54]
[Music]
[56]
of
[59]
[Music]
[60]
[Applause]
[61]
so where do i begin the f-35 is quite
[64]
literally a rocket ship
[65]
with an engine capable of producing 43
[68]
000 pounds of thrust propelling the
[70]
aircraft to over one and a half times
[71]
the speed of sound this jet is something
[73]
else
[76]
as the most advanced fighter aircraft in
[78]
the world it was designed as a 5th
[79]
generation
[80]
multirole fighter meaning it can perform
[82]
both air-to-air and air-to-ground
[84]
missions
[85]
now to best meet the needs of the
[86]
countries purchasing the jet the f-35
[88]
comes in three different variants
[90]
the a-model used for air-to-air combat
[92]
the c-model used for carrier operations
[95]
and if you've ever heard something about
[96]
this jet being able to hover well
[98]
that's the b model optimized for short
[100]
takeoff and vertical landing
[102]
now in addition to this jets
[103]
capabilities its performance record is
[105]
pretty stellar as well
[107]
the f-35 has been deployed all across
[109]
the world for both combat operations and
[111]
training exercises
[112]
in fact at red flag which is the us air
[114]
force's premier air combat training
[116]
exercise the f-35 demonstrated a greater
[119]
than 20 to one kill ratio against
[121]
advanced threats
[122]
not too bad if you ask me honestly the
[125]
mere presence of the f-35 changes the
[127]
way adversaries plan
[128]
and behave and so if you're in the
[129]
market for a fifth generation fighter
[131]
jet
[132]
believe me when i say that this one
[133]
takes the prize
[136]
now with the jet so advanced i had
[138]
always wondered what all goes into the
[139]
manufacturing process
[141]
however what i hadn't realized is that
[142]
lockheed martin's mile-long fort worth
[144]
facility known as plant 4
[146]
has been around since 1942 where it
[149]
began manufacturing the b-24 liberator
[151]
during world war ii
[153]
over the years the plant has produced
[155]
thousands of aircraft to include one of
[157]
my personal favorites the f-16
[159]
today plant 4 houses over 16 000
[162]
employees
[163]
and pushes over a hundred new f-35s out
[165]
the door
[166]
every single year i think it's safe to
[168]
say that there's quite a lot to see
[170]
here which leads us perfectly to the
[171]
first stop on the tour the beginning of
[173]
the production line where the f35 we all
[175]
know
[176]
looks quite a bit different than you
[177]
might imagine
[179]
so here we are at the very beginning of
[181]
the f-35 production line if you take a
[183]
look all the way down there well that's
[185]
the very end where the final aircraft is
[187]
rolled out the door
[188]
so everything in between there's a lot
[190]
going on but behind me is the aircraft
[192]
wing systems where the foundation of any
[194]
aircraft is built the wings in a
[196]
vertical position
[197]
where they finish the wing and then send
[198]
it off to the next and then the next
[200]
line where more and more gets added on
[202]
there's a lot going on guys so we better
[204]
go ahead and get going
[214]
all right now hear me out as weird as it
[216]
may sound you can really think of the
[218]
f-35 production line as a bunch of legos
[221]
at each stop along the way a different
[223]
component is added and the legos are
[224]
pieced together getting closer and
[226]
closer to the final product
[228]
there is so much innovation in
[229]
engineering that goes into all of this
[231]
a lot of which is way more complex than
[233]
i could ever comprehend
[234]
but as i made my way down the production
[236]
line something pretty interesting did
[238]
catch my eye
[240]
wait is that a robot yeah you heard that
[243]
right
[243]
robots i guess it makes sense that the
[245]
company manufacturing such a
[247]
technologically advanced machine
[249]
would use robots in the process but i
[251]
wasn't expecting these robots to be
[253]
this cool
[254]
[Music]
[258]
yes we do use robots here at lockheed
[260]
martin as you can see behind me we have
[262]
blue delta echo and charlie
[264]
unfortunately chris pratt isn't at the
[266]
desk right now operating alpha doesn't
[268]
work fridays
[269]
what we have behind us is the automated
[271]
fastener fill robotic work cell
[273]
basically if you consider like dry
[275]
walling this robotic cell will go
[277]
and put a plastic material over all of
[279]
our fasteners to maintain its stealth
[281]
capabilities
[282]
what we're doing here is optimizing the
[284]
work that operators can do
[285]
by taking away the dull dirty and
[287]
dangerous tasks that are associated with
[289]
this process
[299]
[Applause]
[300]
[Music]
[302]
as my trip down the production line
[304]
continued not only did i see more robots
[306]
but i also saw the f-35 beginning to
[308]
come together
[309]
each step along the way was one more
[311]
piece of the puzzle it really is just a
[313]
big systematic process
[315]
with every single individual along the
[316]
way adding their touch before passing it
[319]
along to the next person in line
[326]
[Music]
[336]
welcome to the end of the f-35
[338]
production line this is where the final
[340]
tweaks and adjustments are made before
[341]
the aircraft is ready to head out the
[343]
doors
[343]
now lockheed martin delivers about 150
[346]
aircraft every single year
[347]
and with many different countries a part
[349]
of the f-35 program believe me when i
[351]
say that this thing
[352]
heads out all across the world
[355]
so now that we've reached the end of the
[356]
line you may be asking yourself
[358]
what else does lockheed martin's plant
[360]
have in store well let's just say that
[362]
there was someone in particular who has
[364]
quite the reputation around these
[366]
parts he's a former navy fighter pilot
[368]
renowned lockheed martin test pilot
[370]
and just so happens to be one of a very
[372]
select few individuals
[374]
who has flown all three variants of the
[376]
f-35
[377]
i hope you're ready because let me
[379]
introduce you to brick
[382]
[Music]
[388]
[Applause]
[389]
[Music]
[392]
wilson
[395]
hey guys i'm tony wilson callsign brick
[397]
i'm one of the f-35 test pilots here at
[399]
lockheed martin
[400]
and i get the privileges of taking the
[402]
f-35 flying for the first time when it
[404]
comes off the production facility
[405]
unfortunately it's a single-seat
[407]
aircraft so we couldn't take sam flying
[408]
with us
[409]
but stick with me we got some really
[411]
cool surprises for him
[424]
[Applause]
[424]
[Music]
[427]
so here we are at the cockpit
[428]
demonstrator we really wanted to give
[429]
you the opportunity to see what
[431]
it's like to actually fly the aircraft
[433]
the first thing you'll notice is you
[435]
know
[435]
the cockpit is almost uh identical to
[439]
what it is in the the plane
[440]
show me everything but it's close no it
[442]
is close so you know under your left
[444]
hand you got the throttle
[445]
on your right hand will be the stick up
[446]
in front of you there is
[448]
uh the glass you know what we refer to
[450]
as the glass and how you'll interact
[451]
with the systems
[452]
and then up on the screen is the virtual
[455]
hud it's the same thing that would be
[456]
shown
[457]
on the pilot's helmet yeah i'm not the
[459]
best pilot but i think i'm ready to take
[461]
uh take it for a spin here
[463]
let's do it
[463]
[Music]
[471]
[Applause]
[475]
[Music]
[478]
so i'm not gonna lie having the chance
[480]
to fly the f-35 cockpit demonstrator was
[482]
a blast
[483]
and if you're wondering if it made me
[484]
question my decision not to become a
[486]
fighter pilot well
[487]
let's just say the thought did cross my
[489]
mind
[490]
even though this was just a simulator it
[492]
was pretty realistic
[494]
right down to the g-forces
[498]
all right i might be kidding on that one
[503]
i was able to do a few takeoffs spin
[505]
around a bit and even cycle through the
[507]
weapon systems to engage enemy targets
[509]
that appeared on screen
[510]
after i successfully completed my
[512]
landing my time was up and i said
[514]
goodbye to the f35 cockpit
[516]
however brick had a few more surprises
[518]
in store and this next one was something
[520]
that i had definitely been wanting to
[522]
see
[533]
yo sam if you thought everything you've
[534]
seen was cool up till now
[536]
check out the f-35 helmet look at this
[538]
thing i'll tell you what it's
[539]
more than just a helmet right i mean
[541]
there's so much technology and
[542]
electronics
[543]
that go into this it's actually
[545]
integrated into the aircraft it's an
[547]
additional sensor for the pilot
[549]
it gives the pilot so much situational
[551]
awareness to what's going on around him
[553]
or her
[554]
it's just amazing you know additionally
[556]
this is the piece of equipment you know
[558]
when we talk about the f-35 and being
[560]
able to look through the jet
[561]
it's possible because of this piece of
[563]
equipment and how it integrates with the
[564]
jet
[564]
yeah i've heard the pilot gets to wear
[566]
this and they kind of see all around
[567]
them see through the bottom of the plane
[569]
and
[569]
i mean it's intimidating looking looks
[570]
like something right out of star wars
[572]
it's awesome
[572]
you want to try it on i do yeah all
[574]
right do it
[578]
[Music]
[586]
so sam the the projectors are up here
[589]
above you so we're going to drop the
[591]
the first visor okay it's clicked in
[595]
i can see the green lights in your eyes
[596]
yeah so you can see it and then
[598]
we'll drop the sun visor wow and there
[601]
you go
[602]
can you see the display i can that's
[604]
awesome
[606]
it's just like right there all right sam
[609]
so you've seen how we made the jet
[610]
you've had the opportunity to feel what
[612]
it's like when you fly it in the
[613]
simulator
[614]
you've even tried on the helmet why
[616]
don't we get you out to the flight line
[617]
so you can actually see one of these
[618]
amazing machines up close
[620]
sounds awesome let's go let's go
[633]
[Music]
[639]
all right so sam we're standing here in
[640]
front of the f-35 lightning ii
[642]
this is a b model which means it's got
[644]
the capability to hover it's used
[645]
primarily by the united states marine
[646]
corps the italian and the brits
[648]
so tell me what's your first impression
[650]
well after walking the entire production
[652]
line and seeing it
[653]
put together piece by piece it's really
[655]
cool to be out here to see the finished
[656]
product
[657]
it's lethal it's stealthy it's fierce
[659]
and i'd love to get a walk around if you
[660]
don't mind let's do it all right
[663]
[Music]
[671]
this is my office right here and i got
[673]
to tell you i've got the best seat in
[675]
the company right
[677]
i get to fly this fantastic machine it's
[679]
the cutting edge of technology
[681]
you know so when we make the statement
[684]
that the f-35
[685]
is the most capable the most connected
[687]
the most survivable aircraft on the
[689]
planet
[690]
take it from me because i do it every
[692]
day and i'm jealous i wish i could go
[694]
for a ride but i can see there's only
[695]
one seat so unless you strap me to the
[697]
wings or have a seat belt extender it's
[698]
not going to work
[699]
well maybe we can put you in the weapon
[700]
bed it's a good idea
[702]
[Music]
[709]
so behind us we have the engine and one
[711]
of the coolest things about the f-35b
[713]
is to watch it transform and watch that
[715]
engine nozzle actually come down
[717]
you know the engine is capable of
[718]
putting out 40 000 pounds of thrust so
[720]
we're in a hover
[721]
about 20 000 pounds are coming out the
[723]
back end and about 20 000 pounds coming
[725]
out of the lift van
[733]
[Music]
[742]
so sam let me tell you this thing is a
[744]
lethal beast right
[746]
it has two weapons bays which you know
[748]
lets us stay stealthy when we need to
[750]
we also have the capability of carrying
[752]
weapons under each wing
[754]
we can carry amrams we carry a nine x's
[757]
uh jdams small diameter bombs almost any
[760]
piece of arsenal that's uh
[762]
uh you know in the inventory we can put
[764]
it on so what you're saying is this
[766]
thing has a lot of firepower
[767]
that's an understatement
[774]
so sam there's one more stop that we got
[775]
to make i've got a pilot walking to a
[777]
jet right now so why don't we head out
[779]
to the flight line and watch this thing
[780]
take off
[781]
let's do it sounds awesome awesome
[791]
[Music]
[797]
so if you made it this far you're
[799]
probably ready to see a real f-35 in
[801]
action
[801]
trust me i was too as the pilot began
[804]
gearing up for his flight i decided to
[806]
look for the best seat in the house
[808]
after navigating quite a few sets of
[810]
stairs i found myself
[812]
right where i wanted to be the top of
[814]
the lockheed martin control tower
[832]
[Music]
[840]
so
[846]
[Music]
[855]
all right here we go
[885]
so there you have it the f-35 in all its
[888]
glory
[888]
now i wish i could show you guys a few
[890]
more of its maneuvers and capabilities
[892]
but i think i'll leave that for a future
[895]
video
[895]
well guys if you aren't pumped up and
[897]
full of adrenaline i don't know what to
[898]
say because that was insane
[901]
if you ever have the chance to see the
[902]
f-35 fly in person
[904]
i promise it's gonna take your breath
[905]
away i hope you enjoyed this little
[907]
behind the scenes tour of lockheed
[909]
martin's f-35 production plant
[911]
and as always thanks so much for tuning
[913]
in and i'll see you guys next time
