InDesign Tutorial How to Design a Portfolio - YouTube

Channel: Roberto Blake

[0]
hey everybody this is graphic designer
[2]
roberto blake and in today's tutorial
[4]
i'm going to be showing you how to use
[5]
adobe indesign to create a pdf portfolio
[10]
so let's go ahead and get started we're
[13]
going to do some basic things here we're
[14]
going to go ahead and reduce our margins
[16]
to
[17]
a quarter of an inch all the way around
[20]
we're going to use two columns
[22]
and
[24]
that's going to be our basic setup we're
[26]
not going to do bleed on this just so
[28]
that wherever you're getting this done
[30]
if you need to get it printed
[31]
ideally we're going to be using this
[33]
mostly for screen but if you do need to
[35]
get it printed
[36]
if you avoid using bleed then you can
[38]
get it printed anywhere so can any of
[41]
your clients or anyone reviewing it
[42]
without having to worry whether their
[45]
printer has that capability whether it's
[47]
an at-home printer or a printer from
[50]
somewhere else like officemax
[53]
staples what have you
[54]
so
[56]
let's go ahead and jump right in one of
[58]
the first things we're going to want to
[59]
do is we're going to want to kind of
[61]
establish
[62]
what our overall layout is going to be
[64]
and how many pages we're going to have
[66]
and for the sake of this tutorial i'm
[69]
just going to use
[71]
four pages and these are going to
[73]
represent
[74]
interior pages
[77]
you would have typically a cover page
[80]
but
[81]
again you're going to design your own
[82]
cover so let's go ahead and just go to
[85]
page 2 as an interior page i'm going to
[87]
show you something really interesting
[89]
that we can do
[90]
we can create a new master page
[94]
and we're just going to go ahead and use
[95]
the default here
[97]
with the prefix of b and we're going to
[99]
say
[100]
interior
[103]
and so we know that these are for
[104]
interior pages these aren't going to be
[107]
the pages that are
[109]
outside the book like the cover
[112]
so we're going to go ahead and
[116]
apply a master to these pages
[119]
it's going to be the interior so now
[121]
you'll notice that all of these have
[123]
switched over to being
[125]
b now so these are going to be
[127]
our interior pages
[130]
so everything we do on this master page
[132]
for b
[133]
is going to be represented inside of our
[136]
interior pages that share that now the
[139]
important thing about that is what we're
[141]
going to do
[143]
is we're going to go ahead and
[147]
we're going to set some basic type here
[149]
and we're going to set this type to
[151]
represent your
[153]
contact information so we're going to
[155]
have your name
[162]
we're going to set your
[164]
email
[173]
we're gonna set
[174]
your
[175]
number
[178]
so
[178]
this is what we're gonna have we're
[180]
going to have a basic place for your
[182]
name your
[184]
email and your phone number and here's
[186]
the interesting thing about that now
[187]
that we've done that you'll notice that
[189]
this appears on every page that we have
[191]
labeled b but not on anything that we
[193]
have labeled a so that means that our
[195]
cover is not going to have it in that
[197]
place but it's going to be uniform
[198]
throughout
[200]
the rest of the document so let's go
[202]
ahead and modify that now so let's just
[204]
say this is going to be
[208]
john smith
[209]
that's always a good one so we'll just
[211]
do that and it'll be john
[219]
johnsmith.com
[223]
and we'll just use
[228]
for the sake of argument
[232]
now something that i'm going to do in
[233]
this case is i'm going to switch over to
[235]
the
[236]
typography
[237]
workspace and the reason is this is just
[239]
going to give me
[240]
personally better options to work with
[244]
and i'm going to do what's called
[245]
creating a new paragraph style
[249]
so what i'm going to do
[251]
is i'm going to select
[252]
all of this john smith type and i'm
[255]
going to change my font and i'm going to
[258]
use one of my favorite fonts i'm going
[259]
to use avener
[260]
so i'm going to switch this over to
[262]
avener
[264]
i don't necessarily need it to be 12
[266]
point
[267]
i'm going to set it at 10 point type
[269]
and that actually looks pretty good to
[271]
me
[272]
so
[273]
now i'm going to add this new paragraph
[275]
style
[277]
which is paragraph style 2 and i'm going
[279]
to edit it
[281]
i'm going to label it contact info
[286]
so now if i ever need uh the contact
[289]
info to um you know utilize that style
[292]
anywhere that i'm putting it i can deal
[293]
with that
[295]
in that way so
[297]
going back to the interior page
[300]
let's just go ahead and adjust this and
[302]
move it down
[305]
let's do that a little bit more
[307]
and
[308]
let's go ahead and use uh
[312]
command shift and r that'll be control
[314]
for you guys using windows and we'll do
[317]
that and now it's flush to our border
[320]
there
[321]
so that's going to be again consistent
[323]
throughout every interior page
[329]
all right
[330]
so the next thing i'm going to do is i'm
[332]
going to go over here to my creative
[334]
cloud digital art folder
[336]
and i'm going to
[338]
pick out a piece and
[341]
let's go with this one for now i'm going
[343]
to pick out a piece here
[345]
and i'm going to
[347]
drag it
[355]
onto this page
[357]
now you'll notice that it's looking a
[360]
bit pixelated but we can fix that pretty
[361]
easily what we'll do is we'll just go to
[364]
display performance and we'll go to high
[365]
quality display and then it'll show up
[367]
differently there now i don't
[369]
necessarily
[371]
like where it is in the frame right now
[373]
so i'm just going to drag the frame out
[375]
so now we have some options
[377]
in the object you could go to
[380]
fitting and you can tell it to fit frame
[382]
proportionally content proportionately
[384]
you have all these options what i
[386]
usually do is i use command shift alt
[389]
and c which will be ctrl shift alt and c
[392]
for you guys using windows and i always
[393]
fill the frame proportionately so i'm
[396]
going to
[397]
use the
[398]
command which is again control for you
[400]
guys on windows and colon so that i can
[403]
eliminate my um margins there just so
[405]
you can get a better idea of what that
[406]
looks like
[408]
so now you have the object
[412]
filled proportionately to your frame
[414]
size and we've done it in such a way
[416]
that it fits within
[418]
our margins you want that to be
[419]
important so
[421]
if i want to do something where i'm
[423]
going to describe
[425]
this particular
[427]
piece in the portfolio what i can do
[429]
here is i'm just going to use
[433]
fill type
[434]
i'm just going to have it insert some
[436]
placeholder text
[439]
and i'm going to change this to
[442]
avener
[446]
i'm going to make it 14 point
[461]
i'm going to select all and i'm going to
[462]
make a new paragraph style
[471]
and i'm going to call this body copy
[479]
so now whenever i do
[481]
that paragraph style on another internal
[483]
page
[485]
such as let's go ahead and we go to page
[488]
two here
[489]
let's say that i'm going to do some body
[493]
copy here
[494]
we'll just go ahead and go to type and
[497]
insert placeholder text i'll just select
[500]
all of this
[501]
i'll go to my paragraph styles
[503]
and i'll tell it to make it body copy
[506]
and there we go
[512]
so now i have that let's say that i want
[515]
a frame that has
[520]
let's say that i want a frame that has
[522]
different uh dimensions and proportions
[525]
than the one we just did and i want my
[528]
image to go in there well i can go ahead
[530]
and i can use the frame tool here i can
[532]
make the frame whatever size i want
[535]
and i can go over here
[538]
and i can drag
[539]
an image
[541]
into that frame
[543]
let's go ahead and use
[546]
we'll go ahead and use this one
[552]
so now i'll use shortcut a
[554]
and i can move this image around in the
[557]
frame however i want i can also go ahead
[559]
and select and drag proportionately from
[562]
the corners and i can resize it
[565]
and the orange outline will
[567]
show me what i have to work with there
[569]
and i can put that
[571]
into
[572]
my frame
[576]
that looks pretty good
[579]
now i'm a fan of making your layouts
[581]
consistent as far as this sort of thing
[584]
goes but you can do whatever you want it
[586]
is your portfolio if you want to go with
[589]
uh you know a magazine style and kind of
[591]
change some things up you can certainly
[594]
do that if you look at my personal pdf
[596]
portfolio you'll see that i went with a
[598]
mostly consistent format
[600]
across the board where i kept all of my
[603]
description text in the same place
[606]
and use the same font styles etc but
[609]
again this is your portfolio you can do
[611]
whatever you want with it um and just so
[615]
that we don't have this blank here i'm
[616]
just going to
[630]
and if you're wondering how i'm resizing
[632]
this this quickly this is just uh
[635]
command shift and the greater than and
[637]
less than signs and then
[640]
same thing with shortcut c to center it
[647]
and again this is just so that we have
[649]
something on the cover here because i'm
[650]
tired of looking at blank
[658]
all right so let's say you want to put
[659]
multiple images in your pdf portfolio uh
[662]
there's definitely a couple of ways you
[664]
can do that uh in this case we're just
[666]
going to go ahead and make two frames so
[668]
i made one frame and i'm going to make a
[671]
duplicate of that frame
[673]
by holding shift and alt and moving that
[676]
directly across with my smart guides so
[678]
now if i go to my portfolio here and i
[682]
select two images
[684]
let's go ahead and select this one and
[688]
let's select
[692]
this one
[694]
so if i drag these over into indesign
[697]
you'll notice that it gives me
[699]
two thumbnails
[701]
which you see the number two there and
[703]
if i go ahead and click on the frame
[705]
it'll paste each of them into the frame
[707]
so i'm going to go ahead and use ctrl
[710]
alt c
[711]
sorry
[712]
command alt shift c and same thing for
[715]
windows but with control and then i'm
[717]
going to just move this over like so
[720]
and
[721]
i'm going to do the same thing here
[724]
so again i can click on this or i can
[726]
use shortcut a and then i can move these
[727]
around as i see fit
[731]
and i like how those look right there
[735]
and i can just copy
[738]
and i can use
[740]
shift
[741]
command alt v to paste this in exactly
[744]
the same place if i wanted to
[748]
i'll just go ahead and move these down
[750]
and then
[753]
use that shortcut again
[763]
so in this short period of time i've put
[765]
together even though i'm using
[766]
placeholder text which you'll probably
[768]
uh copy and paste from a word document
[770]
you should have already done a write up
[772]
on your portfolio pieces
[776]
so that you can go ahead and do this
[777]
sort of thing
[779]
very easily
[781]
you can just copy and paste in your text
[783]
for each
[784]
different item that you have
[786]
and then you can just create these
[788]
frames you can set up your layout and
[789]
yes this is a very plain layout but very
[792]
plain layouts for portfolio purposes
[794]
work as i said in the video that goes
[796]
with this so
[797]
you can just showcase the work make the
[800]
work the hero what we have going on here
[803]
in you know all these pages when you go
[805]
through them is the work is taking
[808]
center stage and that's the really
[810]
important thing here the work is taking
[812]
center stage and the portfolio itself
[817]
is clean
[818]
and it's consistent uh contact
[820]
information is all in the same place the
[822]
fonts are you know the same
[825]
size you know and they have the
[827]
appropriate relationships so you know
[830]
that's what's important here
[833]
so i'm just going to scroll through this
[835]
real quick to give you an idea
[837]
and again this is your
[839]
basic pdf portfolio now when you go to
[842]
export this you have a couple of
[844]
different options
[845]
you can use um and again you can use a
[848]
control e or you can use command e and
[850]
you have a bunch of different options
[852]
you can do it as a pdf um that's
[854]
interactive which will basically uh give
[856]
you a web based pdf so let's just go to
[860]
uh
[861]
let's just say
[869]
if we were going to do that it'll give
[871]
us some options here so you can go ahead
[873]
and you can control the
[875]
overall jpeg quality
[877]
you can set the medium or high you will
[879]
get different results in terms of the
[881]
file size based on that you can set the
[884]
resolution i like to set it to 96 just
[886]
in case they have a high res screen or
[888]
in case they want to print it it won't
[890]
come out so bad you can definitely um
[892]
you know
[893]
set it to 144 or 300 if you want
[896]
again that's in this case we're setting
[898]
it for an interactive pdf portfolio even
[901]
though we don't have interactive
[902]
elements which you could add if you
[904]
wanted to um i prefer to set
[906]
open in full screen mode so that uh when
[909]
it comes out you know it's scaling up to
[911]
the screen
[912]
but there are certainly other options
[914]
that you have for that
[918]
if you're going to go ahead and if
[919]
you're going to make it a print version
[923]
you'll get a different series of options
[927]
those will look like this you'll have
[929]
the ability to control the overall
[931]
compression you'll be able to set up
[933]
marks and bleeds if you were going to
[935]
have this file be the one that you're
[936]
sending to the printer for your print
[938]
portfolio and you don't necessarily have
[941]
to do that but sometimes it can be
[942]
helpful if you're using a more advanced
[945]
you know printer as far as a commercial
[946]
printer
[947]
and you can also go ahead and do some of
[950]
your preflight checks by looking at the
[952]
summary
[953]
and you know just different things like
[955]
that you can also use some of these
[956]
adobe presets
[958]
so again these are your basic options
[961]
another thing you could do with this if
[963]
you wanted to is you could export these
[965]
as individual jpegs you could have every
[967]
individual page be a jpeg and that might
[971]
be helpful if you want to use them uh in
[973]
a very specific way that is an option if
[976]
for some reason you feel like you need
[978]
individual jpeg one sheets
[980]
and there can be some ways you can
[981]
utilize that maybe you decide to use
[984]
that on your portfolio website um so you
[987]
know that's an option that you should
[988]
consider
[990]
well i hope this video tutorial helped
[993]
you in figuring out how to assemble your
[996]
pdf portfolio
[998]
if you want some advice on ways to
[1000]
approach this go ahead and make sure you
[1003]

[1006]
i'll leave a link in the annotation and
[1008]
in the description below go ahead and
