Why Financial literacy in the black community sucks 2021 - YouTube
Channel: Jvo Tv
[0]
hey everybody welcome back to jvo tv and
[2]
today we're going to be discussing a
[4]
very very controversial subject now i
[6]
know this might ruffle a lot of feathers
[8]
but you know what that's what we do here
[10]
on jvo tv we are going to explore why
[13]
blacks are more financially illiterate
[16]
than other races now a lot of you are
[18]
going to point out slavery in a lot of
[20]
situations you would be right but i
[22]
think the issue is much deeper in this
[24]
situation and that's exactly why we're
[26]
going to be looking at it the fact is
[28]
most americans think they know more
[31]
about money than they actually do now
[33]
what if i told you the financial
[35]
literacy rate in united states as a
[37]
whole is only 57
[39]
[Laughter]
[43]
you serious
[45]
that means about just over half of the
[48]
u.s population is financially literate
[51]
which ranks the us 14th globally well
[54]
out of the top 10 behind canada and
[57]
other european countries does this mean
[59]
a lot of us are dumb and no you're not
[62]
dumb if you're not financially literate
[65]
let's check the definition of financial
[67]
literacy so we can get a better
[68]
understanding of it
[70]
what is financial literacy
[72]
financial literacy is the ability to
[74]
understand and effectively use various
[77]
financial skills including personal
[80]
financial management budgeting and
[82]
investing the lack of these skills is
[85]
called financial illiteracy before we
[88]
can begin to understand financial
[90]
illiteracy in the black community we
[93]
have to dispel some of the major
[94]
misconceptions that come along with
[96]
financial literacy
[98]
let's ask some basic financial questions
[101]
and find out what's going on in america
[104]
one my first question is man what is
[106]
credit man what is credit credit what do
[108]
you think credit is credit is man like
[110]
you know what i'm saying like something
[112]
in exchange for you know what i'm saying
[113]
like you know like the more that you
[115]
know i'm saying you're putting in bro
[116]
like you know what i'm saying gotta have
[117]
good credit bro
[118]
what bro what are you talking about man
[121]
now i want everybody to understand this
[123]
video is for my viewers and it's not
[125]
about racial tensions and it's not a
[128]
racist issue this is facts that need to
[131]
be brought to the forefront so everybody
[133]
can understand so try to open your mind
[136]
where we discuss this in the video and
[138]
know it's not about racist issues let's
[140]
continue
[142]
a survey conducted by george washington
[145]
university conduces that 38 percent of
[148]
african americans answer financial
[150]
literacy questions right and just 55
[154]
percent of white americans answer
[156]
financial questions right
[158]
one of the most popular misconceptions
[160]
in the black community is that you have
[163]
to be smart in order to be financially
[165]
savvy
[166]
that is not true you simply have to
[169]
develop good financial habits
[171]
which will ultimately lead you down the
[174]
road of success in the long run but
[176]
before we get to those financial habits
[178]
i want you guys to take one second and
[180]
subscribe to the channel and like these
[182]
videos so this information gets out to
[185]
everyone in a timely manner we are going
[187]
to answer the question which most of you
[190]
are waiting for
[191]
why do black americans fall behind their
[194]
counterparts and white americans when it
[196]
comes to financial literacy
[198]
well this is my theory
[200]
first so my viewers can get a better
[202]
understanding let's take a look at the
[204]
poverty levels in united states for
[206]
white americans it's nine percent for
[209]
black americans is 21
[212]
but hispanic is 17
[214]
and for asian native and hawaiian
[216]
pacific islanders it's nine percent yeah
[220]
so what's your point
[222]
my point is that poverty and education
[225]
are hand in hand blacks and minorities
[228]
who live in poverty are most likely to
[230]
quit school to start work which leaves
[233]
them without literacy and numeracy
[235]
skills to further careers later on in
[238]
life
[238]
i'm sure most of you watching this video
[241]
have heard of the civil rights movement
[243]
i have a dream today
[248]
you see the civil rights movement
[250]
brought about what i would like to call
[252]
affirmative action policies now these
[254]
policies were meant to level the playing
[257]
field between white blacks and
[259]
minorities in america well
[262]
let's just say
[264]
that didn't happen as of the making of
[266]
this video
[267]
there are 10 states that actively ban
[270]
affirmative action today
[272]
starting from the most recent state we
[274]
have oklahoma new hampshire arizona
[278]
colorado nebraska michigan florida
[282]
washington and california we also have
[285]
idaho which recently passed the ban on
[288]
affirmative action in 2020 now out of
[291]
the list i want to focus more on
[293]
california
[295]
which had an initiative constitutional
[297]
amendment in 1996 to ban affirmative
[300]
action over the 25 year span that the
[303]
ban was introduced california's public
[306]
universities have seen a dramatic drop
[309]
in black enrollment particularly the
[312]
last five years i mean black enrollment
[315]
has basically flatlined
[319]
[Music]
[324]
while education and poverty have always
[326]
been closely tied to financial literacy
[329]
in the black community we also have to
[332]
take a look at black culture as a whole
[334]
itself still making numbers
[337]
[Music]
[347]
[Music]
[348]
don't know what i'm talking about
[349]
materialism materialism has long plagued
[352]
the black community and is a stain on
[354]
black culture you see materialism's
[357]
effect on black culture is quite
[358]
extensive and
[365]
[Music]
[370]
ah much better now materialism doesn't
[374]
necessarily mean you're a bad person
[375]
because you like nice things
[379]
but it's when those things become more
[382]
important than your core values or your
[384]
belief system then it becomes a problem
[387]
in my opinion i would say it's most
[389]
prevalent in the black community let's
[391]
use an example so you guys can get a
[392]
better understanding of my point
[395]
in 1984 a little-known shoe was
[398]
introduced to the world by michael
[400]
jordan and nike designer peter moore
[403]
which unfortunately went on to be the
[405]
status symbol for materialism in the
[407]
black community
[412]
[Music]
[418]
shot over shoes detroit police are
[420]
trying to find the person who shot a
[421]
detroit man because he wouldn't hand
[423]
over his air jordan a teen shot because
[427]
of his shoes police say two men went
[429]
into a home because they knew the teen
[431]
living there had the new air jordans and
[433]
they were willing to kill for them so
[436]
what's the big deal why so much trouble
[438]
for a pair of 200 shoes they're limited
[441]
edition see i got the ones last year and
[442]
the year before that so i just have to
[444]
get these ones this is the shoe it's the
[446]
greatest shoe ever made is jordan
[448]
now whether you agree or disagree that
[450]
materialism is a distraction in the
[452]
black community
[455]
you have to admit that it is an
[458]
unpopular opinion when you are
[459]
financially savvy at least for me being
[462]
a black american myself i'm interested
[464]
to see what you guys think about the
[466]
video and your opinion on whether it's
[468]
unpopular to be financially savvy or if
[471]
materialism distracts us from being
[474]
financially savvy
[475]
why are blacks more financially
[477]
illiterate in united states we covered
[480]
that with facts and then we covered it
[482]
with opinion what do you guys think the
[483]
reason is for blacks being more
[485]
financially illiterate than other races
[487]
