What is high-frequency trading? - YouTube
Channel: Stuff They Don't Want You To Know - HowStuffWorks
[0]
what is high-frequency trading
[6]
leave them on or take them when do we do
[9]
that I was still we the thing okay now
[14]
look serious you can turn back now or
[19]
learn the stuff they don't want you to
[21]
know welcome back to the show thank you
[24]
for tuning in as always got Matt behind
[27]
the camera I'm Ben agent scully remember
[30]
her is somewhere off in the darkness
[31]
which makes this stuff they don't want
[33]
you to know now we've all heard this
[36]
statement that time is money but in some
[39]
cases that is literally true in markets
[42]
around the world timing is everything
[44]
and the smallest fraction of a second
[48]
can equal millions gained or millions
[50]
lost now last week Matt and I looked at
[53]
an immensely important question
[56]
could someone orchestrate a stock market
[59]
boom or a stock market bust and in the
[62]
comments you guys overwhelmingly said
[64]
yes of course but there was one thing we
[67]
left out of that series last week and
[69]
this week we're partnering with all-time
[71]
conspiracies to take a closer look at it
[74]
could robots run the stock market I know
[77]
it sounds like science fiction right
[79]
like what are you guys smoking but it's
[81]
not as speculative as you might think
[83]
especially when we consider the rise of
[85]
what's called high-frequency trading
[88]
here's how it works I'm gonna paraphrase
[90]
an article from the New York Times did a
[93]
great job of explaining this
[95]
high-frequency trading
[97]
depends on algorithms or for those in
[99]
the industry
[101]
they're called algos and what they do
[103]
are execute millions of trades per
[106]
second and then they simultaneously look
[108]
at dozens of public and private markets
[111]
so what does this mean
[112]
great question this means that the
[114]
algorithms can spot trends much more
[117]
efficiently and accurately and more
[119]
quickly than a human investor so they
[122]
can execute trades buy and sell within
[125]
milliseconds so close that it might seem
[127]
unless you're looking very closely to be
[129]
a simultaneous event this weird kind of
[132]
math
[133]
radical magic occurs because these
[135]
high-frequency traders minimize latency
[138]
latency is just a fancy word for a delay
[142]
there's a delay in the time between when
[144]
investor a buys a stock and when that
[148]
trade is actually executed and then
[150]
again within this chasm
[152]
you know that's maybe not even a full
[153]
second millions of traits can occur this
[157]
means that if you are a regular old
[159]
school unfortunately biological day
[161]
trader or something you are on the
[163]
losing end of what's called information
[165]
asymmetry so the times had this great
[169]
report a while back about how these
[171]
high-frequency traders can actually peek
[174]
at a stock about 0.3 seconds before your
[177]
average investor so about 0.3 seconds
[179]
again before a trade is executed they
[182]
can swoop in and buy this thing
[184]
milliseconds beforehand and that changes
[187]
the value so for a rough analogy if
[190]
you've ever been trying to buy something
[192]
online and you are bidding for tickets
[195]
or you're on eBay or something and you
[197]
enter a price but then the next thing
[198]
you know the price that you had agreed
[200]
to pay is totally irrelevant and the
[202]
price of the thing has changed that's
[205]
what's happening and that's not all
[207]
that's happening you see during this
[208]
process these traders in these
[211]
algorithms can Pina stock and what they
[213]
do when they Pina stock is that they
[216]
sort of send out a fake bid that they
[218]
can also cancel to get a read on how
[220]
much people are willing to pay for this
[222]
in the world of high-frequency trading
[224]
this is called a flash bid now you might
[228]
be asking yourself guys why is this a
[229]
big deal online shenanigans like this
[232]
occur all the time that's true and
[234]
you're right but this is although it's
[238]
not technically illegal yet this is
[240]
another example of something that we
[242]
have seen cropping up all the time in
[244]
modern history and that is that as a
[246]
species human technological ability is
[250]
outpacing our legislative capacity there
[254]
are things that we don't know how to
[256]
legislate yet and if you just do a
[258]
cursory search on high-frequency trading
[261]
you'll find so many people arguing about
[263]
what if anything we should do to
[266]
change this to reduce this inequality of
[270]
timing and information access to reduce
[273]
this information asymmetry and of course
[275]
you'll find people saying no we
[277]
shouldn't the market will somehow
[279]
correct itself but regardless of what
[282]
you think about this specifically there
[284]
is one thing that is crystal clear and
[286]
it is this the role of human beings in
[289]
the stock market in securities in
[291]
commodities it has profoundly changed
[293]
and likely will never be the same again
[297]
what do you think will happen next is it
[300]
possible that humans will be driven out
[302]
of market mechanics entirely that will
[305]
lose some kind of John Henry esque war
[307]
and that the people who work on the
[309]
stock market in the future will be just
[312]
mathematicians computer programmers are
[314]
the mechanics who clean and maintain the
[317]
cold steel bodies of Wall Street's next
[319]
generation of overlords I mean that's a
[321]
little dramatic but is it wrong thanks
[325]
so much for watching tune in for our
[327]
brand new episode coming out later this
[329]
week on the idea of robots ruling the
[332]
stock market we'd like to give a big
[334]
shout out to our friends at all-time
[336]
conspiracies and we'd also like to hear
[339]
from you so let us know what you think
[341]
about the future of humans and the
[344]
future of robots in the stock market is
[346]
this good for the world's economy is
[348]
this bad is this like a Skynet situation
[351]
that's coalescing and if you don't want
[354]
to find us on Facebook or Twitter that's
[356]
fine we get it you can always send us an
[358]
email directly we are conspiracy at
[361]
howstuffworks.com
[363]
at least met you and I are still
[366]
conspiracy at howstuffworks.com until
[368]
some sort of algorithm replaces us you
[372]
know like some sort of hologram you know
[374]
the thing they say about the Holograms
[376]
on video is they're so good now that the
[378]
only way you can really tell whether or
[379]
not they're real is by looking at their
[381]
eyes
[387]
you
