Yo! Yo! Yo! It's your boy WesTheTech and I'm here聽 to bring you another one of my personal favorite聽聽
[7]
TechTips to help you as an artist growing聽 your craft. Alright now today we're going聽聽
[12]
to be discussing UnitedMasters Right to First聽 Refusal policy alright. So if you're interested聽聽
[20]
in having UnitedMasters be your distribution聽 company it's perfectly fine alright. There's a聽聽
[27]
a number of different distribution companies to聽 choose alright. UnitedMasters probably wouldn't聽聽
[33]
be my ideal choice and this would probably be聽 one of the main reasons why, but again it's聽聽
[38]
completely up to you. Your independent artist. You聽 get to choose whatever path you want to go down.聽聽
[43]
But in this video I'm going to basically go over聽 why the Right of Refusal alone is the reason that聽聽
[50]
UnitedMasters probably wouldn't be the best option聽 for you if you're independent recording artists聽聽
[56]
alright. So now let's go look at what the Right聽 of Refusal actually is it's actually the Right聽聽
[62]
of First Refusal alright. Now before we can聽 discuss what the Right of First Refusal is,聽聽
[67]
I need to discuss in what terms would that right聽 apply. And that would be through their featured聽聽
[74]
partnership program alright. Now UnitedMasters has聽 a very interesting featured partnership program聽聽
[82]
where they will actually submit your music to聽 different places like the NBA, ESPN, NBA 2k they聽聽
[89]
have a partnership with NBA 2k, Twitch and a few聽 other things alright. Now the interesting thing聽聽
[96]
that I found out when I researched about this聽 submission program is that they don't actually聽聽
[101]
push or promote your music to these places so聽 that it get picked up. What they actually do is聽聽
[107]
submitted to a contest alright. So they submitted聽 to a contest and those companies pick the winners聽聽
[114]
of that contest and the winners of that contest go聽 ahead and get featured on you know their policies聽聽
[121]
whether it's on 2k video game whether it's the聽 ESPN channel whatever so UnitedMasters aren't聽聽
[127]
necessarily pushing your music like an actual聽 promoter and pushing it and pushing it and getting聽聽
[133]
it in front of their faces they're basically just聽 submitting it to a contest and to be honest with聽聽
[137]
you, most of the most of those places especially聽 ESPN and Twitch, you could actually submit your聽聽
[142]
music directly to them, so I don't really聽 see the purpose of the partnership program聽聽
[148]
but the key word in that partnership program聽 when it comes to the Right of First Refusal is聽聽
[154]
the "partnership" alright. So now that I explained聽 what the partnership program is let me go deeper聽聽
[160]
into the Right of First Refusal. So with the Right聽 of First Refusal what UnitedMasters is basically聽聽
[166]
letting you know is that if your song were to blow聽 up through the partnership program, they actually聽聽
[174]
have a right to refuse any other record labels聽 that you decide to go with or they have a right聽聽
[183]
to insert themselves into the process of getting聽 signed to a record label. So what does that mean?聽聽
[190]
Let me give you a good example. Let's say you're聽 an artist right and you're making music and one聽聽
[196]
of your biggest dreams was to get on Aftermath聽 Records you know Dr. Dre's record label alright.聽聽
[202]
So let's say Dr. Dre hears your song on ESPN and聽 he's like "Who is that guy? I want to get that guy聽聽
[207]
signed to Aftermath." Dr. Dre finds a way聽 to contact you you know you go to them and聽聽
[214]
they're like "Yo, come sign with me. I'm Dr Dre!"聽 You're like "Of course, I want to do that. I'm聽聽
[220]
going to do that right now. And then here comes聽 UnitedMasters and they're like "No, no, no.聽聽
[225]
We have they say so too." Alright and they could聽 simply refuse and say "No! We don't want you to聽聽
[230]
get signed with Dr. Dre. We have to approve who聽 you get signed with." Or they could be like "No,聽聽
[235]
no, no. You're not going to be at that table by聽 yourself with Dr. Dre, we're coming with you."聽聽
[239]
And they actually have the right to do聽 that because of the keyword "partnership"聽聽
[246]
alright. They are actually your partner if your聽 song blows up through their submission. Now to聽聽
[254]
me that sounds like a record label within itself聽 alright. It's very weird that you did the song,聽聽
[262]
you made the song amazing, the only thing聽 they did was submit it to a contest,聽聽
[268]
you won the contest because your song was that聽 good, and Dr. Dre is calling you because the song聽聽
[274]
is that good. But somehow now they become your聽 partner because they submitted you to the contest聽聽
[279]
that you could have did yourself alright. To聽 me that's absolutely ludicrous alright. That is聽聽
[284]
absolutely ludicrous. You own the song, it's your聽 song, but dealing with their partnership program聽聽
[291]
they actually have the right to do that聽 alright. So this and foremost is primarily one聽聽
[297]
of the main reasons that me as an independent聽 artist, I would never consider UnitedMasters,聽聽
[303]
or I would have UnitedMasters and not deal聽 with the partnership program because I don't聽聽
[307]
want a partner. That's the point of me being聽 an independent artist right? But if you're聽聽
[312]
going to deal with the partnership program know聽 that that is down the pike, know that they're聽聽
[318]
gonna have a say so when it comes to your music聽 if your music was to blow up alright. So that's聽聽
[323]
what the Right of First Refusal is. It's in it's聽 in their Terms of Service. It's not right in聽聽
[330]
front of you obviously. That's not something聽 they would promote, but if you go into their聽聽
[333]
Terms of Service just look up the Right of First聽 Refusal if you don't believe me. It's in there.聽聽
[338]
Now it's written in legal terms, so you might聽 have trouble understanding it when you read it.聽聽
[343]
But do your research on it and you'll see for聽 yourself it's exactly what I'm talking about聽聽
[346]
alright. I'm not making this up. I actually did聽 the research myself and that's what I found out.聽聽
[350]
Either way, I hope this helps, thank you for聽 tuning in, and enjoy the song of the week.
[355]
