Hi everyone it's Larry, I wanted to make聽 this video because I鈥檝e received quite a聽聽
[4]
few comments on previous YouTube videos as聽 well as messages that have been sent to me聽聽
[10]
through email or social media asking about what聽 is it like to be an underwriter what is the job聽聽
[16]
of an underwriter what does an underwriter聽 really do and what are some of the skills聽聽
[20]
needed to excel and exceed as an underwriter in聽 today's market so with this video I鈥檓 here to go聽聽
[26]
over those questions and answers all right first聽 an underwriter is essentially any individual who聽聽
[33]
works for a company or who works for themselves聽 they are essentially looking to make a decision聽聽
[40]
at the end of the day an underwriter's job is to聽 make some sort of decisions and if you think about聽聽
[46]
different aspects of underwriting we basically can聽 think about insurance comes to mind actually this聽聽
[51]
is an insurance channel but there's a property聽 insurance underwriters there's commercial聽聽
[57]
insurance underwriters and then there's also聽 underwriting outside of the insurance industry聽聽
[62]
such as a mortgage or home loan underwriters聽 or any loan for that matter there's usually聽聽
[67]
underwriters involved in some regard typically聽 there's also underwriters when it comes to聽聽
[73]
getting credit cards or any sort of line of credit聽 and so essentially what an underwriter is doing is聽聽
[78]
they're looking to make sure that if they take聽 on giving some sort of financial protection or聽聽
[84]
financial benefit to another party the underwriter聽 is essentially making a decision to determine聽聽
[90]
whether or not this is the right move in order聽 for the company or the underwriter to accept聽聽
[96]
that individual or entity or risk into the聽 portfolio and those decisions are stand by a聽聽
[102]
lot of different factors it could be based off on聽 the company's risk appetite it could be based off聽聽
[107]
the company's financials and wherewithal it could聽 also be based off factors in packing impacting the聽聽
[114]
entity or the individual themselves like credit聽 worthiness or previous experience or previous聽聽
[120]
history those are just a few elements that goes聽 into the underwriting process but as i alluded聽聽
[126]
to there are just various aspects in which you聽 can be an underwriter if you like uh opportunity聽聽
[131]
or you like roles where you can actually make聽 decisions and actually be more entrepreneurial聽聽
[136]
and you like to do research underwriting is聽 really the right career in the right role聽聽
[141]
if that's something you're interested in so now聽 I want to talk about what is it like to actually聽聽
[147]
grow and excel as a provider what are some聽 of the skills needed in order to excel聽聽
[152]
as an underwriter today and really there's聽 three attributes that I kind of look at when聽聽
[158]
I think about underwriting now and kind of聽 where underwriting is going for the future聽聽
[163]
and the three attributes that I link to is right聽 behind me essentially these are data driven聽聽
[170]
it's going to also be critical thinking and soft聽 skills those are really the three attributes that聽聽
[176]
are really core to the skill set needed for an聽 underwriter and so with regards to data and that's聽聽
[182]
essentially we talked about the investigative聽 the research I鈥檓 really making sure that you聽聽
[187]
have a good foundation baseline for making those聽 decisions and those data sources could be internal聽聽
[194]
sources they can be external sources they give聽 me questionnaires with the customer or with the聽聽
[200]
entity I鈥檓 reviewing paths experience or past聽 loss history all of those attributes goes into聽聽
[206]
the underwriting process and that's really stamped聽 by data and making a decision without data can be聽聽
[214]
not a good thing because if there could be a聽 loss or something unforeseen happen with that聽聽
[220]
risk if deceptive that could actually come back聽 when an underwriter says your manager or your聽聽
[225]
boss might ask you why did you make that decision聽 and you never want to be in the situation where聽聽
[230]
you have to answer that question and if you do聽 have to answer that question you want to make聽聽
[234]
sure that the answer is based off the facts and聽 the data that you had that basically caused you聽聽
[241]
to make that decision I鈥檓 really in the聽 data driven aspect and we look at three聽聽
[245]
different areas that's really exposure profit and聽 product and typically when you're doing your data聽聽
[253]
analyses or you're looking at your analytics as聽 an underwriter underwriting is really focused聽聽
[257]
on analytics now and really with the whole聽 insure tech movement and with how fast things聽聽
[264]
have changed and the speed in which your customer聽 gets a quote when that down policy is found it's聽聽
[269]
very fast now look at data driven one look at our聽 exposure what is the exposure that you're ensuring聽聽
[275]
as an underwriter and that's kind of the nber one聽 thing you want to ask yourself as an underwriter聽聽
[280]
what is the exposure and once you can identify聽 what the exposure is you can then go about聽聽
[285]
figuring out if that exposure meets your risk聽 appetite if it meets your expected profit model聽聽
[292]
profit margin that the company or the entity has聽 for that particular risk knowing your product聽聽
[298]
knowing your market and what your product is in聽 is really important as an underwriter because聽聽
[303]
you want to make sure you have the data to nber聽 one understand the customers or the policyholders聽聽
[308]
in your market you want to understand who聽 the agents are within that particular region聽聽
[313]
typically most underwriters will have an assigned聽 region or territory that they're responsible for聽聽
[318]
and it's really important to understand and always聽 stay up to date with what's happening within聽聽
[323]
that particular region and if you have to make聽 product changes or if you have a separate product聽聽
[329]
development team you want to work with your聽 product team or your product manager and聽聽
[333]
really bring to their attention some of the聽 things you're seeing as an underwriter because聽聽
[337]
at the end of the day if you accept that risk聽 and overall you forgot the product side of things聽聽
[343]
that could lead to unforeseen hazards that maybe聽 you didn't anticipate before you want to make sure聽聽
[349]
that the policyholder is as informed as possible聽 about any hazards about any uh risks that might聽聽
[356]
not be foreseen by them and just letting the聽 policyholder know and training and educating that聽聽
[362]
policyholder could actually help them mitigate聽 their own risk in many cases in my experience聽聽
[367]
they're really thankful for that and that's kind聽 of where underwriting is going and it's really has聽聽
[372]
been and it's now going forward even more it's聽 really solution space where the underwriter is聽聽
[377]
working hand in hand with the broker or the agent聽 with the policyholder to figure out what solutions聽聽
[383]
can be identified in order to mitigate future聽 losses and even avoid those losses in many cases聽聽
[390]
regarding the critical thinking aspect of things聽 really critical thinking is essential if you're聽聽
[396]
an underwriter in today's market or even looking聽 to be an underwriter maybe your college graduate聽聽
[400]
thinking about going into underwriting critical聽 thinking is very essential because the job of an聽聽
[406]
underwriter now is to really think about all the聽 different aspects that might be impacting that聽聽
[411]
potential risk that could also impact the聽 company that they're basically looking to聽聽
[416]
ensure the risks with understanding what those聽 exposures are understanding the concentration聽聽
[422]
within those territories or within those聽 regions is really important not just from聽聽
[426]
a profit product and exposure perspective聽 but that's where critical thinking really聽聽
[430]
comes in and helps the underwriter to identify聽 things that they may not have identified before聽聽
[436]
and critical thinking isn't just about the聽 underwriter working or thinking about it聽聽
[440]
themselves but they're also working with their聽 product teams they're working with their actuarial聽聽
[445]
groups working with their management team聽 maybe they're also working with the sales and聽聽
[449]
marketing team working directly with the agents聽 and so as you see underwriting is really core to聽聽
[456]
everything as it revolves around the insurance聽 process and the underwriting process leveraging聽聽
[462]
technology or different analytical tools or聽 illustrative tools to help you as an underwriter聽聽
[468]
kind of identify hazards more quickly and there's聽 a lot of data providers in the markets just聽聽
[476]
you can talk with your carriers or聽 talk with your management team to see聽聽
[480]
which data providers that might be of interest聽 for you as the underwriter and or your company聽聽
[485]
soft skills is a trait that I cannot stress enough聽 soft skills in the insurance industry can be聽聽
[492]
very important if you hadn't thought about that聽 it's not just online or electronic transactions聽聽
[500]
although there is a certain part of the business聽 that is very technology focused which doesn't have聽聽
[505]
as much customer interaction but even still聽 soft skills is important for the underwriter聽聽
[511]
yourself when you think about self-awareness as聽 an underwriter typically if you're it's easy to聽聽
[517]
have blinders on I鈥檝e done it before in my career聽 where you kind of just are very tunnel focused on聽聽
[523]
making your decision and you or you may be pressed聽 up against the deadline or you may have a lot of聽聽
[529]
risks that you have to review for the day and聽 then sometimes you may just get just focused on聽聽
[534]
just thinking about things yourself and I鈥檓 kind聽 of being more self-aware of that to say maybe聽聽
[539]
I should just pause take a break and talk to my聽 co-worker and just get my co-workers opinion about聽聽
[545]
this risk before I accept it or before I deny聽 it or talking with the agent more and asking the聽聽
[551]
agent more questions that might help you identify聽 things that you didn't know about initially聽聽
[556]
and so that's really very key of the whole soft聽 skills is even if you don't interact directly with聽聽
[562]
the agent or the broker or entities or proxies聽 you still have a responsibility to kind of be聽聽
[569]
aware of like your own soft skills in terms of聽 like how you react and how you respond to things聽聽
[574]
if you communicate with agents when you're聽 working with brokers you want to have that聽聽
[578]
direct line of communication typically it's聽 better as an underwriter especially if you're聽聽
[582]
talking more technical focus you want to just pick聽 up the phone and you want to call the agent I know聽聽
[588]
many of you like cringing right now just hearing聽 that you got to pick up the phone but really if聽聽
[592]
you're talking about technical related items it聽 might be better to just go ahead and pick up the聽聽
[597]
phone and call the agent broker or the customer聽 and explain some of the concerns that you have or聽聽
[604]
before you deny it you may want to talk it over聽 with them first before you just issue the denial聽聽
[609]
and then that way you can have that open dialogue聽 and that's really great for the relationships.
