5 Finance Careers Explained (and what they pay) | Pt2 - YouTube
Channel: Kenji Explains
[0]
what's up everyone kenji here and in this聽
video i thought i'd share five career options聽聽
[4]
in finance so this is actually a part two聽
video i made a part one a couple weeks back聽聽
[9]
and a lot of you requested a聽
follow-up video so here it goes聽聽
[12]
so the five jobs i've picked are quants聽
investment analysts financial advisors聽聽
[17]
commercial bankers and brokers i'm mainly going聽
to be focusing on entry level as well as well as聽聽
[22]
a couple years down the line and we'll be looking聽
at things like their work life balance the skills聽聽
[26]
required the salary and also be providing some聽
examples of companies in each category so you聽聽
[32]
can look further if you want to apply to them and聽
just like the part one video if this video does聽聽
[36]
well i will consider making a part three where i聽
cover other jobs like private banking or portfolio聽聽
[41]
management so make sure you hit that like and聽
subscribe all right let's get into the video聽聽
[46]
so the first job we'll be looking at is quants聽
which is short for quantitative analysts聽聽
[51]
so this role consists of creating algorithms and聽
statistical models specifically to solve problems聽聽
[55]
in the financial markets and as you can imagine聽
their backgrounds are in fields like physics聽聽
[60]
computer science or mathematics now this role is聽
actually relatively new and it's increasingly high聽聽
[65]
in demand especially as the finance industry聽
has transitioned into more computer based聽聽
[70]
now within the quant world there's actually聽
many different roles some are more focused聽聽
[74]
on risk management so trying to control the聽
risk of certain trades others are more focused聽聽
[78]
on algorithmic trading so trying to develop an聽
algorithm that will trade in the financial markets聽聽
[83]
for them while there's many other roles like front聽
office squads library quants and so on but that's聽聽
[88]
maybe for another video and all sorts of financial聽
institutions employ quants so the investments the聽聽
[93]
asset managers and so on but the most famous聽
ones are probably the quantitative hedge funds聽聽
[98]
so these are the likes of the show citadel or two聽
sigma and as for the skills required for this kind聽聽
[104]
of a role it's obviously quite numerical most of聽
these people know how to code already and it's聽聽
[109]
not uncommon to have advanced level degrees so the聽
likes of a master's or a phd although it's usually聽聽
[114]
not required now it's for good reason that they're聽
called the rocket scientists of wall street聽聽
[119]
as for the pay it's extremely high especially聽
because they're in high demand and at the same聽聽
[123]
time they also complete with the big tech聽
firms which are also known to pay a lot聽聽
[127]
so let's say around 120 000 in a big financial聽
city like new york is not unheard of when it comes聽聽
[132]
to the hours they're actually not as short as some聽
people might expect i'd say it's more like a 12聽聽
[137]
hour day so 16 hours a week now it is longer than聽
the average 40 hour work week but at the same time聽聽
[142]
they are compensated quite well so this brings us聽
to our next role which is an investment analyst聽聽
[147]
and ironically enough they don't actually invest聽
money themselves that's usually done by the trader聽聽
[151]
instead what they do has to do with analyzing data聽
researching and creating presentations for the聽聽
[156]
portfolio manager or the investment manager was聽
basically their boss and there's tons of different聽聽
[161]
companies that employ investment analysts from聽
asset managers like blackrock to investment banks聽聽
[166]
like goldman sachs to even insurance companies聽
like axa as well overall there is a big split聽聽
[171]
between the buy side and the sell side so buy聽
side is looking to invest money while the sell聽聽
[175]
side is about doing research for the broker to聽
sell securities to clients but because investment聽聽
[181]
analyst is actually such a vague title they聽
usually specialize in a specific asset geography聽聽
[187]
or even industry so for instance you might have an聽
investment analyst that's dealing with government聽聽
[191]
bonds in the us another one that only deals with聽
tech stocks in the uk and so on and so forth聽聽
[197]
as for the work hours around 50 hours a week聽
is normal so it's nothing outrageous say but at聽聽
[202]
the same time you got to keep in mind that it is聽
quite a high pressure environment when it comes to聽聽
[206]
dealing with money right as far as skills required聽
spreadsheets so excel skills are usually one of聽聽
[210]
the big ones as well as general finance as well as聽
accounting at the same time you do have to present聽聽
[215]
so presentation skills can come handy as well when聽
it comes to the designation the cfa is very very聽聽
[221]
popular here some jobs as investment analysts that聽
you might look to apply to if it might require say聽聽
[226]
having at least a level one or something like that聽
in the cfa there's actually three different levels聽聽
[230]
before you get to the full certificate or the聽
full designation as far as salary i'd say around聽聽
[235]
75 000 is a good rough guide but you got to keep聽
in mind that it is a very big industry and there's聽聽
[240]
many different roles so it may vary depending聽
on that next up is the financial advisor role聽聽
[246]
and in short this is all about advising clients聽
on what they should do with their own money聽聽
[250]
it's also sometimes called a financial planner and聽
a typical example of what they might have to do is聽聽
[254]
say you're looking to retire by the time you're聽
60 years old so they look through your taxes your聽聽
[260]
insurance your billings and so all of the other聽
money related stuff and try to make an estimate聽聽
[264]
of how much you should be saving how much you聽
should be spending and so on among the big pros聽聽
[268]
of this kind of a role is that if you do things聽
well you can really have a positive impact on some聽聽
[272]
people right on the other hand on the coin side聽
if your recommendations don't work out and they聽聽
[276]
end up losing money that can obviously be very聽
stressful so uh you got uh you got my money huh oh聽聽
[283]
yeah i'll pay you soon at the same time if you're聽
just starting off it's always very very hard to聽聽
[288]
get your first few clients especially because you聽
don't actually have any experience yourself right聽聽
[292]
so that can be a hard start i'd say when it comes聽
to the work hours especially as you move later on聽聽
[297]
it does become quite flexible so it depends on聽
what the client's needs are but at the first聽聽
[302]
couple years i'd say around 50 hours 50 to 60聽
hours is quite common the skills for this kind聽聽
[307]
of a role are obviously finance but at the same聽
time a lot of the interpersonal communication聽聽
[312]
as well as sales skills are very important聽
right at the end of the day you're trying to聽聽
[315]
persuade them that you can handle their money聽
so you really need to convey some trust there聽聽
[320]
when it comes to designations the chartered聽
financial planner is probably the most common聽聽
[324]
one but it's not uncommon to also have the cfa聽
or the cpa as well salary wise it's usually a聽聽
[329]
combination of a fee and a commission the fee聽
is basically for managing the money every year聽聽
[334]
so they might take something like one percent聽
for instance and on the other hand there's a聽聽
[337]
commission for using their products sometimes some聽
advisors only do fees or they only do commissions聽聽
[343]
as well so salary wise it's actually going聽
to vary quite a lot depending on that so for聽聽
[347]
instance if you have a lot of commission revenue聽
then that salary is obviously going to be boosted聽聽
[351]
same goes if you have a lot of clients and there's聽
a lot of fees for you but overall i'd say around聽聽
[355]
60 000 is a good estimate among the big names聽
when it comes to financial advisors are fidelity聽聽
[361]
state street as well as vanguard all right moving聽
on to commercial banking and if you don't know聽聽
[366]
what commercial banking is in short it's just two聽
main things number one has to do with offering聽聽
[370]
deposits and number two has to do with lending聽
money to people like you and i say and companies聽聽
[375]
of all sizes so small medium and large usually聽
if you're fresh out of college you'll start off聽聽
[380]
as a credit analyst and in this kind of a role聽
you're providing clients with credit products like聽聽
[386]
term loans lines of credit mortgages and other聽
products like that and the goal here is obviously聽聽
[391]
for them to be able to pay you back right so聽
you're looking through their credit history their聽聽
[395]
financial statements spending habits and so on and聽
based on that assessing whether they'll be able to聽聽
[400]
pay the bank back as you can probably imagine the聽
skills for this kind of a role are quite numerical聽聽
[405]
so excel math and finance knowledge can聽
definitely come handy a common designation聽聽
[409]
to work towards is the credit risk certification聽
when it comes to hours i'd say around 50 hours a聽聽
[414]
week is quite normal so i don't think that's聽
anything outrageous salary wise around 70聽聽
[419]
000 dollars a year is a good estimate now when it聽
comes to the types of companies out there um it's聽聽
[425]
basically all of the different commercial banks聽
that you see out on the street right so in the us聽聽
[428]
that's probably the likes of chase bank of america聽
or capital one overall people do regard commercial聽聽
[434]
banking as quite a stable career in which there's聽
a good work-life balance and it does have quite a聽聽
[439]
competitive pay as well now if you want to learn聽
more about the differences between a commercial聽聽
[443]
bank and an investment bank i have made another聽
video just on that so you can go somewhere up here聽聽
[448]
where i'll leave it linked and the last job we聽
look at is a broker and in short a broker buys聽聽
[454]
and sells securities on behalf of the client's聽
wishes so these securities can range from shares聽聽
[459]
to bonds to options and much more than that now聽
at this point you might wonder well what's the聽聽
[463]
difference between a broker and a trader basically聽
i am simplifying a bit here but a broker executes聽聽
[469]
trades on behalf of the client's wishes once a聽
trader executes trades on behalf of the portfolio聽聽
[475]
manager or the investment manager's wishes so a聽
broker does have a lot more of a people element聽聽
[480]
as well because there's obviously many different聽
clients that he or she handles right when it comes聽聽
[485]
to the hours it's not your average 40 hour work聽
week it does start very very early in the morning聽聽
[489]
primarily because the markets open quite early聽
right so in the us it starts at 9 30 the market聽聽
[494]
open time so i have to be in there quite a few聽
hours in advance in order to get everything ready聽聽
[499]
have the research ready um catch up on the news聽
and so on and so forth overall around 55 hours i'd聽聽
[505]
say it's a good estimate and you've got to keep聽
in mind that these hours where they're working are聽聽
[509]
actually very very stressful especially when the聽
markets open as there's a lot of money to be made聽聽
[513]
or loss free when it comes to the pay there is a聽
big myth that all stock brokers are millionaires聽聽
[518]
that's probably because of the wolf of wall street聽
but realistically as an entry level broker you'll聽聽
[523]
probably be making around 60 thousand dollars聽
and then there is a high upside though depending聽聽
[527]
on how much you can earn off commission so there聽
is a good potential in that sense among the most聽聽
[532]
useful skills are communication working well聽
under pressure especially when the market is聽聽
[536]
open and sales because mainly they depend on them聽
for earning a commission right when it comes to聽聽
[542]
licenses the series 7 as well as the series 63 are聽
some of the main ones primarily because they give聽聽
[548]
you the authority to trade on behalf of clients聽
when it comes to companies there's actually a聽聽
[552]
big split between what's known as a full service聽
broker and a discount broker a full service broker聽聽
[557]
does provide investment advice as well so they聽
might do some research for you they might analyze聽聽
[561]
things for you as well whilst they discount聽
broker it doesn't do any of that instead it just聽聽
[566]
does the trade right overall obviously a full聽
service broker does have a higher commission聽聽
[570]
than a discount one for those obvious reasons but聽
some examples of full service brokers include city聽聽
[576]
or morgan stanley while some examples of discount聽
brokers could be fidelity or child schwab as well聽聽
[583]
so those are five when it comes to salaries聽
do take it as a bit of a rough guide mainly聽聽
[587]
because it depends on a city you're in and other聽
things like that and same goes for the work hours聽聽
[591]
because well you might have a bad boss and聽
that makes you work longer than usual right聽聽
[595]
also do let me know in the comments if you'd聽
like me to explain some other jobs or maybe聽聽
[599]
