We have an ADDRESS! - YouTube
Channel: Adventurous Way
[0]
hello and welcome back to adventurous
[1]
way i'm diana and i'm matt and we're
[4]
back here at the property again today
[5]
with quite a few little things to uh to
[7]
get on with yeah i'm back from my course
[9]
at yesterday and uh matt has done a few
[12]
things while i was away yes the driveway
[16]
finished uh the construction about two
[17]
and a half weeks ago it's kind of
[18]
mid-september now so we're into fall uh
[21]
the colors are starting to change on the
[22]
leaves and the trees and things and it's
[24]
looking really beautiful but we do have
[27]
quite a few things that we we're trying
[28]
to sort of tackle i guess small jobs
[30]
that we uh we need to do
[32]
so already i created a quick little
[34]
sawbuck that i can put some logs on and
[36]
start chopping those up into firewood
[38]
we're not going to be burning firewood
[40]
in the house but we do want some that we
[42]
can use for campfires and things like
[43]
that uh so it's a good way to use up
[45]
some of the logs that are too small or
[47]
too crooked for milling so that's uh
[50]
that's been one good job that's uh that
[52]
i've started on there the other big job
[54]
you can kind of see behind us here so we
[57]
started this uh was it last week i guess
[59]
yeah uh our builder colby had made this
[62]
stone wall which we really like down
[64]
here at the front of the property and so
[65]
we just filled in the dirt behind it and
[68]
started adding some mulch on top yeah so
[70]
today um one of the jobs for today is to
[73]
kind of finish it off and the mods that
[75]
we used was uh from the last time we
[77]
used the chipper we put it in the
[79]
boulder bags and we kind of put them
[81]
away so they're not in the way while
[82]
doing the construction of the driveway
[84]
and at first we thought oh it's going to
[86]
be a compost eventually but it actually
[89]
turns out that this is a great use case
[90]
so we're putting mulch and then we'll
[92]
seed it with some wildflower native
[95]
seeds yeah just find some like grasses
[97]
and wildflowers and things the goal here
[99]
really is not just to make the entrance
[101]
look a little bit nicer we don't want to
[102]
be those neighbors who have that
[104]
horrible looking entrance that's just
[106]
a mess so we're trying to tidy it up for
[108]
that reason but also to help prevent
[110]
erosion we don't want the
[112]
the water to run down here and wash all
[115]
that soil away and start to undermine
[116]
the the road surface down here so by
[119]
backfilling the dirt and putting the
[120]
mulch on top that helps but then having
[122]
some actual plants and things going on
[124]
top should really help to stabilize that
[126]
area as well yeah
[128]
and that is on one side of the entrance
[130]
and the others hydrogen entrance they're
[131]
still just big piles of rocks
[134]
and it is going to be a mess for a while
[136]
because first we want to
[138]
get the electrical in from electrical
[139]
pole and then when we know you know how
[142]
is that installed and what kind of space
[143]
they need then we'll deal with the other
[145]
side
[146]
yep so just trying to tackle these
[148]
things one at a time uh the other big
[150]
job that we're gonna be doing today is
[152]
hopefully it shouldn't take that long uh
[154]
but it's a really monumental job which
[156]
is to install our mailbox so
[159]
back when we got the road access permit
[161]
to put in the driveway we needed that in
[163]
order to get the street number assigned
[165]
for the property there was no address
[167]
for this property uh or pre-existing we
[169]
had confirmation uh last week that our
[172]
address has been created and we have a
[174]
street number and everything now and so
[176]
we met the mailman out here a couple of
[177]
times actually just to confirm the
[179]
placement of a mailbox it's nothing
[181]
super fancy it's just using kind of a
[183]
post and a mailbox i picked up from home
[185]
depot at the weekend
[186]
but we'll get those in it's a little
[188]
tricky position it's kind of right next
[190]
to the culvert and kind of the drainage
[192]
ditch at the side of the road so uh it
[195]
is a little tricky to put in there we've
[197]
also got bedrock really shallow so we're
[199]
going to be putting down a little bit of
[200]
gravel for drainage
[202]
putting the post on top and then
[203]
surrounding it with concrete and we're
[206]
hoping that will be enough to uh to
[207]
stabilize it fingers crossed um it's
[209]
kind of the best best idea we've got at
[211]
the moment um so we'll just have to see
[213]
how see how that goes
[214]
nothing super fancy though so but it
[216]
will be exciting to have the mailbox
[218]
yeah and uh kind of maybe a quick update
[220]
on kind of behind the scenes uh stuff so
[223]
you know we got the first permit the
[224]
road access permit and now we have the
[226]
driveway in so that's great um we have
[229]
the survey done of the area of the house
[232]
and like the septic area so now the um
[234]
the septic engineer uh is going to be
[237]
designing the septic system and then
[240]
putting in the wastewater permit it's
[242]
it's going to take a while because he's
[244]
been super super busy and he's still
[245]
very very busy um and then after that
[248]
will be um the zoning permit yeah so
[251]
if you read between the lines of what
[253]
diana's saying there we're not going to
[254]
be building this year um by the time
[257]
we've got the zoning permit and
[258]
wastewater permit in hand uh it'll just
[260]
be too late in season to start building
[262]
yeah but that's okay uh it was kind of
[264]
we'd hoped we're gonna be able to get to
[266]
building this year that would have been
[267]
really nice um but it's no big deal
[269]
we're we'll uh we'll just pick up yeah
[271]
and that's just
[273]
you know the life of covid and
[274]
everyone's busy not enough people to do
[276]
the work and so on so
[278]
totally fine um our in terms of like
[281]
shipping stuff we ordered our sawmill
[284]
and it's still on track yeah sawmill
[287]
should be here end of october is what
[289]
they're saying i called them a week or
[290]
two ago and that was still the case we
[293]
have heard from other people that
[294]
they've had theirs they're sort of doing
[296]
a shipment at the end of each month i
[297]
think and i think it was like the august
[299]
shipment was
[301]
weeks and weeks uh faster than scheduled
[303]
yeah so there's a chance it could arrive
[305]
earlier um but at the moment we're on
[307]
track apparently for end of october and
[310]
we ordered it months ago yeah we ordered
[312]
it back in may june yeah may i think
[315]
yeah june probably june june um and then
[317]
we also ordered the grapple for the
[319]
tractor but that is delayed that should
[321]
have actually arrived today today was
[322]
actually the the original estimated date
[325]
i called them last week
[327]
they had to shut their entire factory
[328]
down for multiple weeks
[330]
due to supply chain issues so
[333]
that's been delayed we probably won't
[335]
see that until october
[337]
he didn't even sound very confident
[339]
about that so maybe november which is a
[341]
real shame because that grapple would be
[343]
great for moving some of these stones
[344]
around yeah it would be great for moving
[346]
the brush around and it would be great
[348]
for moving the logs around
[350]
but we don't have it we haven't got it
[351]
uh so we'll just have to make do with
[353]
the bucket and the pallet forks and
[354]
things the other thing that we've got
[355]
arriving uh next week uh you may
[358]
remember it a little while ago in one of
[359]
the videos we said we were thinking
[361]
about getting a shipping container but
[362]
we decided against it because the price
[365]
to buy a u-ship container is just
[367]
astronomical i think it was
[369]
three times smaller yeah it's about five
[371]
thousand dollars for a used
[374]
not great condition used 20-foot
[376]
shipping container yeah um
[378]
so we just decided that wasn't worth it
[380]
but uh we have decided to rent a
[382]
shipping container so this is something
[384]
that we couldn't do originally because
[386]
without the driveway in we had no way to
[388]
easily get a nice new shipping container
[390]
good quality shipping container up there
[392]
but now that we've got the driveway in
[394]
it's no problem for a semi or whatever
[397]
to reverse up here and drop off a
[399]
shipping container and the rental prices
[401]
haven't really gone up that much so i
[403]
think it's something like 150
[405]
a month to rent a 40-foot shipping
[408]
container
[409]
and that'll be great we've got a site
[410]
for that that we asked colby and the
[412]
guys when they were doing the driveway
[414]
just to clear a flat section for us up
[416]
there so we've got a good location for
[417]
that to go and that will give us some
[420]
dry
[421]
relatively secure
[422]
storage on site so we don't have to keep
[424]
carrying everything back and forth in
[426]
the truck bed which is killing me it's
[428]
just yeah i can't wait to have my truck
[429]
back to be honest yeah so
[431]
even though we're probably not gonna get
[433]
to building anything this year we still
[435]
have plenty of stuff to do so now that
[437]
the trees uh you know were taken down
[440]
because we are putting in the driveway
[441]
now there's a lot of slash that we can
[443]
deal with um bucking logs um piling them
[446]
up for milling so that we can do until
[449]
the salmon arrives and then when the
[450]
samuel arrives then we can start milling
[453]
our wood and i think you were doing some
[454]
estimates weren't you the other day oh
[456]
yeah looking at the pile of logs that's
[457]
up there already so this doesn't include
[459]
the ones along the driveway that we
[461]
haven't taken up yet nor does it include
[463]
the ones that will have to like the
[464]
trees that will fell to clear the house
[466]
site and things so just the logs that
[468]
are there already you estimated
[470]
something about 4 000 board feet yeah 4
[473]
000 board feet so i was playing with
[474]
some numbers this morning if you're not
[475]
familiar with what a board foot is it's
[478]
a measure of lumbar quantity and it's a
[481]
volume equal to
[483]
a piece of wood 12 inches by 12 inches
[485]
by one inch thick
[487]
and so if you sort of play around with
[488]
the numbers and things and you convert
[489]
that into like two by sixes yeah i think
[492]
i worked out that
[493]
if we milled everything into two by
[495]
sixers full dimension stuff which we're
[496]
not gonna do we'll keep a load of slabs
[498]
and things but if we did mill it all
[499]
into eight foot long two by sixes it
[502]
would give us over 600 two by sixes um
[505]
it's an astronomical amount of wood yeah
[507]
and i think i was trying to do call
[508]
collections if we use that for if for
[511]
let's say siding around the house uh
[513]
that's like i don't know like
[515]
three
[517]
more three times more than deciding we
[519]
would actually need like the square
[520]
footage um so yeah that's a lot of wood
[523]
and for your europeans listening uh in
[525]
europe i think they measure it in cubic
[528]
cubic meters cubic meters and uh it's
[530]
about 10 cubic meters of like the
[533]
finished lumber
[534]
it's an insane amount of wood so when we
[536]
get the sawmill we're going to try and
[537]
get that milled uh before the winter
[540]
that's going to be our kind of like
[541]
final project so we still need to work
[542]
out where we're going to put it all
[544]
um
[545]
we're obviously brand new to milling so
[547]
there'll be a steep learning curve there
[548]
but i hope we've got enough lumber that
[551]
we can make plenty of mistakes and not
[553]
worry about it and we'll just just move
[555]
on and get another piece of wood so so
[557]
yeah lots to do lots of little small
[559]
things um but lots of things to keep us
[561]
busy we got this rake with the fiber
[563]
glass handle and the great thing it's
[565]
super lightweight the bad thing is we
[568]
already broke the um handle in half um
[571]
but it's still usable but maybe next
[574]
time it's gonna be different kind of
[576]
break
[577]
[Music]
[590]
[Music]
[610]
so goal for today is to remove these
[612]
rocks and kind of smooth it out and put
[615]
the wood chips on
[620]
[Music]
[657]
it
[660]
[Music]
[691]
so
[710]
[Music]
[731]
ready
[732]
yep
[750]
so
[771]
[Music]
[784]
no
[787]
[Music]
[792]
well
[793]
we made great progress today i'm very
[795]
happy
[796]
so today we finished kind of grating and
[798]
smoothing this area behind the stone
[801]
wall and we put our third and last wood
[805]
chip bag on it and it still has
[809]
more wood chips to go on it so now next
[811]
time when we do chipping we will lay
[813]
those wood chips down here and actually
[815]
there's a couple of slash piles just
[817]
here yes so we'll get the chipper and
[819]
we'll just chip it straight into this
[820]
area so we don't need to bag all that
[822]
stuff up we can just spread it straight
[824]
away yeah and then some of the other
[826]
piles will probably try and bag up best
[828]
we can and
[829]
move them around but
[830]
yeah i think it's looking great we
[832]
haven't yet decided what we're gonna put
[833]
in here in terms of plants and things
[835]
but we're thinking probably some wild
[836]
flowers and some grasses um something
[838]
that we do not need to know yes and
[840]
we're hoping we can get away with just
[843]
sort of sprinkling them on the mulch
[844]
although maybe we're being optimistic
[846]
yeah um so we've got a couple of phone
[848]
calls to uh
[849]
a few local
[851]
garden nurseries and things to uh to get
[853]
some advice and see what works around
[855]
here yeah
[856]
so then while dyna's been doing that and
[858]
really you have done nearly all of the
[859]
stuff with sorting the stones and
[861]
some
[862]
manual labor today
[864]
i've had the relatively easy job of
[866]
putting up the mailbox so we put it over
[868]
by the road it was the location that we
[869]
agreed with the mailman i'm not in love
[873]
with the location it is
[875]
closer to the road than i like in an
[878]
area where there's snow plows so i am a
[880]
little bit concerned about that that
[882]
said we didn't have a lot of choice uh
[883]
that was really just about the only
[885]
location that we could put it we put it
[887]
in with two bags of the quikrete sort of
[890]
no mix concrete stuff so you just pour
[892]
the the powder in and then um add water
[895]
and we did that
[896]
underneath gravel underneath so that any
[898]
water that does get in there can drain
[900]
and honestly we sort of hemmed it in
[902]
with a load of rocks and things it's
[904]
solid like it's only been testing for
[906]
what six hours or something and i don't
[908]
want to wobble it too hard but you can
[909]
tell it's it's
[910]
pretty well in there and we wanted to
[912]
put the rock so that it's kind of almost
[915]
like a retaining wall so it doesn't push
[917]
in into the uh
[919]
stream where the culvert goes yeah our
[921]
next uh little job will be later on this
[924]
week we'll be renting the chipper again
[926]
like we said and starting to get through
[927]
these slash piles uh in particular the
[930]
two here because we're going to bring
[931]
out our v to the property fairly soon uh
[934]
just for a few days just just to park it
[936]
here and say we
[937]
can do it we slept on our own land so uh
[940]
we're gonna park the rv actually just up
[942]
there where the tractor is pretty much
[944]
um so we do want to get those slash
[946]
piles out of the way first and there is
[948]
also a slash pile
[950]
way at the top near the house site that
[952]
is going to be trapped behind the
[954]
shipping container so we will rent the
[957]
chipper start with those three piles
[959]
see how much further we can get but
[961]
today it is 5 30 we still got over an
[964]
hour to get back to the rv yeah so i
[966]
think we're done for today thanks for
[967]
watching and if you enjoyed this video
[969]
and if you have friends who you think
[971]
might enjoy
[973]
following along our journey of building
[975]
up our home base in vermont please share
[977]
the video with them
[979]
thanks for watching and we'll see you in
[980]
the next video
