Has Turkish Airlines Changed? Safety First or Cost Cutting? - YouTube
Channel: Sam Chui
[0]
- Today, we're going to fly on
Turkish Airlines to Istanbul.
[3]
The flights are quite full.
[4]
There's almost 300 passengers.
[5]
- What would you like to drink?
[6]
- The welcome drinks they used to have.
[8]
- I'm sorry. Just after the pandemic--
[12]
- We did a big turn over
to downtown in Dubai.
[15]
(upbeat music)
[16]
They give you a boxed
meal to reduce contact.
[18]
They don't serve you course by course.
[20]
I love the chef.
[22]
Where is the chef?
- Yay!
[23]
- They were after me, I
didn't make a mess inside.
[27]
This is not enough for a big guy like me.
[29]
There's a blanket but there's no pillow.
[31]
Do you see lots of passengers,
they don't wear masks,
[34]
they lower their masks.
[36]
(upbeat music)
[39]
(rumbling)
[49]
Thank you.
[50]
Good morning.
[51]
I'm showing my PCR test
results at the check-in.
[54]
Today, we're going to fly on
Turkish Airlines to Istanbul.
[58]
It's been more than one and a half years,
[60]
since my last flight in Turkish Airline.
[62]
Can't wait to check out
what they have right now.
[64]
(upbeat music)
[70]
It's 7:30 at Dubai
Airport, it's pretty busy.
[75]
You know, even though there are
lots of travel restrictions,
[78]
and I am travelling
today to Turkey for work.
[82]
(upbeat music)
[88]
That was a really long walk.
[90]
It's almost like one end to
the other end of Dubai airport.
[94]
And now we're going to get on board,
[96]
the B777-300/ER, Turkish Airlines.
[98]
(bright music)
[103]
Good morning.
- Good morning.
[105]
Welcome on board.
[106]
Hygiene kits for you.
- Hygiene kits?
[108]
- Yes, sir.
- Oh, okay. Thank you.
[110]
- [Flight Attendant] Welcome.
[110]
- Hello. Welcome aboard.
[113]
- Morning. Welcome aboard.
- Good morning.
[115]
It's been a while since I
came onboard Turkish Airlines.
[118]
The 232 on the 777, wide space seat.
[122]
(upbeat music)
[142]
- Hello, good morning.
[143]
(speaking in foreign language)
[144]
I'm Captain Leven Lapitulaf.
[146]
I'm here with my colleague.
[149]
Kristoff Zarayka.
- Hi.
[150]
- And then, Captain Muratz.
- Hi.
[152]
- We are operating today,
[155]
flight 763 from Dubai to Istanbul.
[159]
Today's flight time is four
hours and twenty minutes.
[162]
Weather conditions here are very good.
[164]
We will depart from runway one to right
[166]
and make a right turn
like the, the Arabian sea.
[169]
And then, past the Arabian Gulf,
[173]
and enter into Turkey via Iraq.
[176]
Flight level today will be 36,000 feet,
[179]
flight level is 360
[181]
and the speed will be Mach .83.
[184]
We can start the (indistinct) facing east.
[203]
(plane engine roars)
[219]
- Wow, I was surprised.
[220]
The flight are quite full,
[222]
there's almost three hundred passengers,
[224]
all nationality going to transit Istanbul.
[227]
They just restarted this
flight since December.
[237]
(upbeat music)
[259]
- Take off (indistinct)
[261]
(clicking)
[268]
Stabilised.
[269]
- Checked. (indistinct)
[274]
(plane engine noise)
[278]
- D1.
[281]
(indistinct)
[295]
(upbeat music)
[308]
We had a pretty clear morning.
[310]
We just took off.
[312]
And then, we did a big turn
over to downtown in Dubai
[315]
and then, we flew over the World Islands.
[318]
So, it was a nice sightseeing
routes out of Dubai.
[327]
Oh, this is what I'm doing.
[328]
Taking picture of all
the products to share
[331]
with you, the information.
[333]
Very typical stuff, hand sanitizer wipes.
[337]
And of course mask, I noticed
all the flight attendants.
[340]
They don't wear PPE, not
even gloves, just a mask.
[343]
So, it's quite different
to the one in the golf
[346]
and in Asia, where they have full PPE,
[349]
the visor, gloves.
[351]
- Sir, welcome right here.
[352]
What would you like to
drink with your meal?
[354]
- [Man] Do you guys still have those,
[356]
you know, the welcome drinks
[357]
they used to have all those
very colourful cocktail.
[360]
Yeah. I always liked them.
[362]
- I'm sorry, just because after pandemic,
[363]
I can serve you some orange juice,
[365]
apple juice, or peach juice, if you want.
[367]
- [Man] Just orange juice, please.
[369]
- Sure.
[370]
(upbeat music)
[376]
Enjoy.
[393]
- So, as you can see the boxed
meal here, this is one area
[397]
in the service area.
[398]
During the cold, the airline has changed
[400]
they give you a boxed
meal to reduce contact
[402]
and leave it on your table.
[403]
And then, they don't serve you.
[405]
Course by course,
[406]
which Turkish Airlines is
actually really famous for,
[409]
all four cuisine.
[410]
Airlines these days are
losing billions of dollars.
[412]
So, they're looking at a lots
of area for cost cutting.
[416]
The bit of good news I heard is,
[417]
for flight over eight hours,
[419]
they're actually bringing
back the hot meals,
[422]
but eventually, I hope they
can even bring back hot meals
[424]
on shorter sector like this one.
[426]
I love the chef.
[427]
Where is the chef?
- Yeah.
[428]
- The chef is missing.
- I knew you were a chef.
[429]
And I used to be a chef, one time.
[431]
I was cooking here.
[432]
Learning how to do the eggs.
[434]
- [Flight Attendant] But,
just because after pandemic,
[436]
during pandemic,
[437]
there is no customer for
the chefs on the flight.
[440]
- No chef right now.
[441]
- Yeah, for right now,
[442]
but we're hopeful they are coming back.
[444]
- Right, right, right.
(laughing)
[446]
- Hi, sir.
- Hi.
[447]
- I need to clean the toilet, sir.
[449]
- Oh, you're cleaning toilet.
[450]
- Yeah.
- You know after me,
[451]
I didn't make a mess inside.
[453]
- After every person here,
in business class, I do it.
[456]
- Oh, after everyone.
[457]
- Yeah.
- In business class,
[458]
you do this.
[459]
(carefully wiping)
[461]
(upbeat music)
[467]
- I was impressed, but,
[468]
how often do you do economy class toilet?
[470]
You can't do every passenger.
[472]
There'll be 300 of them using them.
[474]
- After every five passenger.
[476]
- [Man] After every five passenger.
[478]
- Or every 30 minutes.
[479]
- [Man] Or every 30 minutes.
[480]
- Yeah.
[481]
(upbeat music)
[487]
- [Man] Other than eating or drinking.
[490]
Do you see a lot of passengers?
[491]
They don't wear a mask.
[493]
They lowered their mask,
to sleep and all that
[495]
- Actually you're right,
[496]
because sometimes we
can see some passengers
[499]
wearing not mask, but, every 15 minutes,
[502]
we are walking around in the cabin
[503]
for checking the masks with
covering both nose and mouth.
[507]
- [Man] What if the passenger
refused to wear a mask?
[510]
- He must.
[511]
It's not possible they not-- He must.
[514]
Some, we are still keeping the
distance from the passengers
[517]
while contact.
[519]
But, we are keeping the
smile behind our masks.
[521]
- [Man] Me too.
[522]
I have a smile.
(laughing)
[523]
That's called "smice."
[525]
So, you can see our eyes now.
[527]
Do you still do your makeup?
- Every time.
[529]
- Do you still wear lipstick inside?
[530]
- Yeah, we're wearing that.
- Okay.
[531]
You know, the mask for me.
[533]
I like it is, when I lower
it, I cover up my double chin.
[536]
- Sir, wear your mask.
[537]
- Oh, yeah. Wear my mask.
(laughing)
[540]
(upbeat music)
[546]
We're just going to go down
[547]
to check out economy class
and you can see actually here
[551]
the seats are three, three, three.
[553]
It will be wider than a
usual three, four, three,
[556]
on the 777 economy.
[558]
Hey, good morning, how are you?
[561]
Just want to check.
[562]
What kind of food you
serve in the economy?
[564]
Because I know it's a boxed
meal in business class.
[567]
Can I see the food?
[568]
- Yeah, okay.
- Okay.
[569]
- So, water is here
- Oh, it's a bag.
[571]
- Yeah, it's a bag.
- Oh, wow.
[574]
So, you just give the
bag to the passenger.
[576]
- Yeah.
[577]
- What do they have inside?
[579]
- We have this, it's a turkey sandwich.
[582]
- A turkey sandwich.
[586]
- (indistinct) Cake.
- You have a cake.
[589]
- We have juice.
[593]
- Okay.
[594]
Juice.
[595]
- Then, we have bottle. Yeah.
- Water.
[597]
- While looking at this clearly,
[598]
this is not enough
[599]
for a big guy like me.
[600]
- [Flight Attendant] Of
course, we can bring you,
[601]
a second meal or you
can bring your own food.
[604]
Doesn't matter. Yeah.
[606]
(plane engine roaring)
[611]
- I'm just going to take a little nap
[613]
but, there was no pillow as well.
[616]
There's a blanket but there is no pillow.
[618]
For this business class,
[619]
as you know, two, three,
two, is a little bit narrow.
[622]
The disadvantage is you have
to hop across your neighbour
[624]
to get out, right.
[626]
Especially, if you're stuck
[626]
in the middle seat, in the middle.
[628]
However, every seat has pros and cons.
[631]
The advantage this seat has,
[633]
many didn't realise is on your leg.
[636]
Your leg, there's nothing
on top of your leg.
[638]
There's no table, no console.
[640]
So, you can freely turn
around on your way to sleep.
[643]
So, you know, if nobody's
sitting next to you,
[646]
like my flight is coming really good.
[648]
(upbeat music)
[668]
(plane noise)
[672]
(indistinct)
[680]
- [Man on speaker] 100.
50. 40. 30. 20. 10.
[703]
(upbeat music)
[720]
- [Man] So, there you go.
[721]
We just landed at Istanbul, had a big taxi
[723]
around the huge airport I'm
coming here, actually for work.
[727]
I'll be presenting a cargo conference
[730]
in a few days at Istanbul.
[732]
The flight is really very, very quiet.
[734]
It's very ordinary, but
I'm glad to check out
[738]
what Turkish airlines offer so far.
[740]
- They'll come Istanbul.
[742]
I hope that you enjoyed this
flight with Turkish Airlines.
[745]
We managed to land well ahead
[747]
of the scheduled time of arrival.
[748]
That's because during these COVID times,
[751]
the airspace is not very busy,
[752]
and we got a lot of direct
routing, making us land
[756]
to around 35 minutes ahead
of the scheduled time
[759]
of arrival that saved us a lot of fuel.
[761]
On top of that, we used
to (mumbles) 25 today,
[765]
for the approach that
saved us again, some fuel
[768]
and we text it in with one engine only.
[771]
That means overall, we had the fuel saving
[773]
of around one and a half pounds
because in Turkish Airlines,
[777]
we are very committed to
environment protection
[779]
and to reduce the carbon footprint.
[783]
And so by doing so, we
like to contribute also
[786]
for the environmental protection.
[789]
They often do enjoy the sites
[790]
and I hope to see you in
another Turkish Airlines.
[792]
Thank you.
(speaking in foreign language)
[796]
- So, I was presenting cargo talks
[798]
by Turkish cargo as a percenter
[800]
and I met the Turkish Airline
Chairman, Mr. Iiker Ayci,
[804]
Mr. Ayci actually demonstrated
about the current wind change
[807]
in aviation, how you can
quickly adopt yourself
[810]
and what Turkish airlines has done?
[812]
And he also answered a response
[814]
about the cost cutting and
take a look at this interview.
[816]
It was very interesting.
[818]
- What you do is
[819]
in order to save yourself
because the ocean will take you.
[822]
So, what you do is just to go
with the safer store, right?
[826]
Safer, right?
[827]
Three seconds ago,
[828]
this one is the safer
one, three seconds later,
[831]
will not be the safest run.
[833]
- You will change.
- Well, now,
[834]
you have to change.
[836]
You have to look at it.
[837]
And you got to (mumbles) how to change.
[839]
And out the back.
[841]
You understand?
[842]
The decision-makers
right now in the world,
[843]
what they have to do is, is like
[846]
just watch the weight and feel
it and watch the tight ways.
[852]
And always try to change.
[855]
And you have to be smart and quick.
[858]
That's why otherwise you could think
[860]
that the old times it goes
[861]
like this and you'll make your plan.
[864]
This is the safest one.
[867]
No, you can't be successful like this.
[869]
You need to be very quick, very fast.
[872]
(upbeat music)
[876]
- [Man] Have you received
any government bail out
[878]
during the crisis?
[879]
- [Iiker] You know, we
didn't take any bailouts
[881]
during that processes.
[883]
Only, we got also short-term support
[886]
for the labour intensive jobs.
[889]
We didn't get any bailout plan.
[891]
We didn't get any capitalization.
[893]
We didn't get any capitalization
by the government.
[895]
And what we did is we made
our plan, our turnaround plan,
[899]
our cost cutting plan.
[900]
We are publicly listed company
[902]
and very transparent to our shareholders,
[905]
very transparent to our
crew, our staff as well.
[909]
And we put the numbers
[910]
to them and said that, "Hey
guys, this is a situation."
[913]
We don't want any lay offs in the company.
[915]
We don't want to do the same thing
[916]
like other companies did
in the world right now.
[919]
We don't want any to lay offs
[920]
because you are the most
valuable asset of this company.
[923]
We brought this brand, that level
[926]
in the world right now together.
[928]
We got together and
made a mutual agreement
[931]
and in this mutual agreement,
we just put it there.
[935]
As long as the crisis
is ongoing, no layoffs.
[938]
And we'll keep everyone in the company.
[940]
We will stand no one behind us.
[943]
So all the staff will be
together, but we made some trims
[947]
but a sliding scale
[948]
and our staff accepted
it and they supported it.
[952]
- [Man] What about the food?
[953]
When are you bringing back hot meals?
[955]
Is there any plan for that?
[957]
- [Iiker] Starting from April
[959]
and things will be different
in the international flights.
[962]
Again, the hot meal
will come back very soon
[965]
and also in the only short-haul flights,
[969]
we will be a little bit
more cautious again.
[972]
But if you have seen
that the normalisation
[975]
and the vaccination is
increasing and health care.
[978]
Our healthcare consultants
confirmed that you can continue
[982]
and get back to also a
larger selection of catering.
[987]
Again, we'll do it for sure.
[989]
- [Man] You convert a lot
of freighter, freighters.
[992]
So, can you talk about a little bit
[994]
- [Iiker] Yeah, I don't like
- [Man] about the toggle side
[995]
- [Iiker] about the sleeping beauties.
[996]
Especially, when they are very
expensive, very immediately,
[1000]
we switch them and then,
we change our mentality
[1003]
and mindset and try to adapt
ourselves to the new situation.
[1007]
Hey guys, we have to think
faster than the virus
[1010]
and we have to adapt ourselves
[1012]
to this new market conditions faster
[1015]
than the virus,
[1016]
and then, behave use, at this 50 aircraft,
[1020]
I'm on the passenger fleet.
[1021]
We put them to the cargo
[1023]
and the cargo capacity then increased.
[1025]
And we did a great job into 2020.
[1028]
- I hope you enjoy listening
to this business insight
[1031]
and I hope you enjoy the video.
[1033]
