Average 401k Balance by Age 65 | PLUS # of "401k millionaires" - YouTube

Channel: Holy Schmidt!

[0]
in this video i discuss the average 401k
[2]
account balance
[3]
of a 65 year old in this country coming
[6]
up next
[6]
on holy schmidt holy schmidt
[12]
there are a lot of financial questions
[14]
going into retirement but one of the
[16]
most common is how do i compare to
[18]
others
[19]
in terms of my 401k balance this video
[22]
will cover off
[23]
the answer to that question stick around
[26]
to the end because i'm also going to
[27]
disclose
[28]
the number of 401k millionaires
[32]
here in the u.s and i will do this both
[34]
by percentage
[35]
of 401k balances out there and also
[39]
by an absolute number all right let's
[42]
get into it
[43]
when i post averages here on holy
[46]
schmidt
[47]
i get a lot of positive comments from
[49]
people for example
[50]
one of my more recent videos is the
[52]
average debt balance of a 65 year old
[55]
that video had hundreds of comments
[57]
overwhelmingly positive
[59]
but there were a few that asked what's
[62]
the point
[63]
it's a fair comment for those that
[66]
aren't focused in on the question so
[69]
let's talk about the benefits and
[71]
limitations of what you're going to see
[72]
here on this video
[74]
first the benefits i've never been a big
[76]
believer that
[77]
ignoring information that's available is
[79]
a good idea
[80]
if it can somehow help you or at least
[82]
not hurt you
[83]
more information is almost always better
[86]
than less information
[87]
particularly when you're thinking about
[89]
your own retirement
[90]
it's the discussion that the information
[93]
facilitates
[94]
not where you personally sit in the
[97]
continuum
[98]
of how much you have in your 401k versus
[101]
others
[102]
knowing what the averages are allows you
[103]
to ask better questions and understand
[106]
what's going on in the world around you
[108]
but there are also limitations and let's
[110]
discuss what those are
[111]
the first is where you live and how you
[113]
live if you live
[115]
in a low cost small town outside
[119]
of milwaukee wisconsin
[122]
your cost of living is going to be
[125]
a lot less than if you're living in new
[127]
york city
[128]
the average 401k balance also doesn't
[132]
contemplate other things like other
[134]
assets you might own
[136]
your home rental real estate
[140]
a securities account where you have
[141]
other investments
[144]
a pension this video also doesn't
[146]
discuss whether or not your partner has
[148]
a 401k and last but not least it doesn't
[151]
discuss
[152]
your debt balance if you have a million
[154]
dollars of assets but you have two
[155]
million dollars of debt
[157]
you are in an insolvent position
[161]
and the last point is that 32 percent of
[163]
the workforce has contributed to a 401k
[165]
yet 79 of the workforce has access to a
[170]
401k
[171]
this means that less than half the
[173]
people who could be contributing to
[175]
their 401k
[176]
actually do before we begin please make
[179]
sure you click subscribe and
[180]
notifications
[181]
so that you get alerted the next time i
[182]
post a video i post about twice a week
[186]
let's begin by discussing some basic
[188]
terms
[189]
the first is mean mean is the
[193]
average of all of the 401k balances
[197]
that were reviewed to make up the answer
[200]
that you're going to see in a few
[201]
minutes there were 5 million
[204]
401k balances that vanguard assessed
[207]
so this information comes from vanguard
[210]
and the mean number
[211]
is simply adding up the balances of all
[212]
five million accounts
[214]
and dividing that by five million and
[217]
another way to look at this and more
[218]
reflective
[219]
frankly of reality for most people is
[222]
the median
[223]
it's the account value of the person
[225]
right in the middle
[226]
if you have five million accounts that
[228]
are under review
[229]
it's the value of the two million five
[232]
hundred
[233]
thousandth account the reason that the
[235]
median
[236]
is a much more representative number is
[239]
that you can have a few very large
[240]
balances
[241]
at the top that skewed the averages way
[244]
up in fact you will see that that's
[245]
exactly what happened in just a minute
[247]
or so
[248]
and as i mentioned before this
[250]
information comes from the vanguard
[252]
2020 assessment of 5 million
[255]
401k accounts the data here is
[259]
representative of the much broader
[261]
universe of 401ks so what are the
[265]
averages
[266]
the average 401k balance of a 65 year
[269]
old
[270]
is 216 720
[273]
dollars the median balance is 64
[277]
548 an incredible difference between the
[282]
two and the reason is as i said before
[285]
you have a few very large balances at
[287]
the top
[288]
skewing the averages way up but the
[291]
median number
[292]
is more representative of the middle of
[295]
the pack
[296]
and the answer to the question about
[298]
401k millionaires
[300]
1.6 of 401ks out there
[306]
have a million dollars or more in them
[309]
so with a workforce
[310]
of 155 million people that's the current
[313]
workforce here in the united states
[315]
and an average uptake of 401ks of 32
[319]
percent
[321]
1.6 of the 32 percent equals
[326]
744 000 401k
[329]
millionaires so what does that mean for
[331]
you well
[332]
it depends on what your benchmark is of
[335]
course
[336]
if you want a million dollars in your
[337]
401k
[339]
you need to save early and save often
[342]
most of you are probably pretty close to
[344]
65 and don't have anywhere near
[346]
1 million dollars in your 401k in fact
[350]
many of you might not even have 64 548
[354]
dollars
[354]
in your 401k it's important to point out
[357]
that if 32
[359]
of the workforce has a 401k
[363]
that means 68 of the workforce does not
[367]
my guess is those folks the majority of
[370]
them anyway
[371]
aren't independently wealthy and based
[373]
on
[374]
data that i've researched for other
[377]
videos
[378]
most of that group has less than five
[380]
thousand dollars to their name
[382]
if you're above sixty four thousand five
[383]
hundred and forty eight dollars it
[384]
doesn't mean that it's time for you to
[386]
take your eye off the ball and stop
[388]
saving conversely if you're below that
[390]
number it doesn't mean that it's time to
[392]
give up
[392]
and throw in the towel whether you're 65
[396]
or 25
[397]
every day you should be pushing to put a
[399]
little bit more
[400]
into your retirement account if you like
