TurboTax Review 2022 (Tax Year 2021) - YouTube

Channel: Smart Family Money

[0]
hey guys it's tax season again and in
[2]
this video i want to review the 2022
[5]
version of turbo tax you probably know
[8]
me as a mom and a budget but i'm also a
[10]
former tax preparer and i've seen a lot
[12]
of tax returns in my day when you first
[14]
log into the turbo tax software you're
[15]
going to be entering in your basic
[17]
information now if you use turbotax last
[19]
year it's going to pull all that over
[21]
for you which is really convenient if
[23]
you did not use turbotax last year you
[25]
can actually upload your 1040 from
[27]
whichever software you used which is
[29]
really nice because it'll take that
[31]
information and get you started and save
[32]
you some typing and then the first thing
[34]
it's going to do is try to upsell you on
[37]
some more services so i'm in the free
[40]
edition right now which actually does
[41]
include a lot of forms and it does
[43]
include the state return for free as
[45]
well which is a pretty good deal but
[47]
they're trying to upsell me on their
[49]
plus service which gets you support and
[52]
some other different services like audit
[54]
defense i don't really think that's
[56]
necessary so i'm going to click continue
[58]
with the free version all right so then
[60]
the next thing you're going to do is
[61]
enter all of your sources of income
[63]
let's take a look at how turbotax
[66]
handles w-2s so if you click to add
[69]
another w-2 it's going to offer you to
[71]
enter your employee's id number and then
[74]
it will give you some options for
[75]
getting it in turbotax definitely has
[77]
the most options for entering forms you
[79]
can upload a form as a pdf or even as an
[82]
image or you can type it in yourself i'm
[85]
going to click on type it myself right
[87]
here one thing i don't like about turbo
[89]
tax is that on the w-2s they split it up
[91]
into multiple screens where you had to
[93]
fill out the first part and hit continue
[95]
and then hit another part and hit
[96]
continue it seems to be overly
[98]
complicated for entering your w-2 forms
[100]
so let's look at adding other types of
[102]
forms so this is a 1099 int or bank
[105]
interest a lot of people have these
[107]
forms and the first thing it's going to
[109]
offer you is to import directly from
[111]
your financial institution which is
[113]
something pretty much only turbotax does
[115]
now i didn't really want to import from
[117]
a financial institution i'm using
[118]
fictional people anyway the next thing
[121]
it's going to offer is to upload it from
[123]
as a file but if you click down here you
[125]
can type it in yourself the funny thing
[127]
about all these methods is a lot of
[129]
times it's literally only one number you
[131]
have to type in for a 1099 int so
[134]
while they're trying to be nice i feel
[135]
like they kind of over complicate this i
[137]
do like that their written 1099 int form
[140]
is very simplified they're only showing
[142]
you box one and three and then you have
[144]
to click down here if you want to see
[145]
the other boxes but i like that they
[147]
keep it simplified here now in the free
[150]
version if you click to add something
[151]
that is not included in the free version
[154]
like i'm clicking right here on
[155]
self-employment it will pop up this box
[158]
and tell you that you do have to upgrade
[160]
to the one of the other options all
[162]
right now let's take a look at the
[163]
deductions section i do like in turbo
[165]
tax that it just walks you through the
[166]
various deductions and it asks you
[168]
questions to help you figure out what
[169]
sort of deductions you have i do wish
[172]
though that it asked you somewhere if
[173]
you just want to take the standard
[175]
deduction it doesn't really make that
[177]
very clear since 85 to 90 of americans
[180]
do only take the standard deduction a
[182]
lot of this is a waste of time you don't
[185]
need to be entering your real estate
[186]
taxes your medical expenses all those
[188]
sorts of things that are on itemized
[190]
deductions since the tax changes in 2017
[193]
the vast majority of americans do not
[195]
itemize anymore another thing the
[197]
deductions that have surprised turbo tax
[199]
didn't mention is donations to charity
[202]
in 2021 there is a special rule that
[205]
people who take the standard deduction
[207]
can still deduct up to 300 in cash
[210]
donations to charity separately even if
[212]
they're taking the standard deduction
[214]
and couples can take up to 600 that's
[217]
different than 2020 when it was only 300
[219]
for couples so this is a really nice
[221]
benefit and can be a great way to get a
[224]
tax break if you did donate some cash to
[226]
charity in 2021 even for those of us who
[228]
fall in that 90 majority who are taking
[231]
the standard deduction you can still
[232]
enter it in in turbotax but you just
[234]
have to separately go into the
[235]
charitable deductions section to make
[237]
sure you enter that cash donation one of
[239]
the big advantages that turbotax has
[241]
over some of its competitors is that
[243]
they do have a mobile phone app that
[245]
goes along with turbotax so i wanted to
[248]
show you that too when you get logged
[249]
into the phone app it's going to look
[251]
really similar to the website that you
[253]
just saw
[254]
you're going to check out your personal
[255]
information and then you're going to go
[257]
on to entering your income and you'll
[259]
see it's trying to upsell me just like
[261]
online
[263]
when you go to the home section of the
[264]
app there are menus that look pretty
[265]
similar to the website and i think
[267]
they're pretty easy to navigate although
[269]
i do feel like the app runs a little
[271]
slower than the website does entering
[273]
forms on the mobile app is pretty
[275]
similar to adding forms on the website
[278]
and you can see they're going to offer
[280]
me to
[281]
import from my bank account for a 1099
[284]
int and then you'll see on the mobile
[286]
app it also has the option of snapping a
[288]
photo bringing it from the bank or
[290]
uploading a document from your phone as
[292]
i was using this app to enter the
[294]
information for this tax return i did
[296]
find it was easy to navigate it was
[298]
pretty slick although it was a little
[300]
slow and how it ran but there were a
[302]
couple times that i felt like i was sent
[304]
in circles it kept sending me back to
[306]
the previous menu and so i think there
[309]
were some buggy parts of this app
[311]
overall as a mobile experience though i
[313]
think the turbo tax app is pretty nice
[315]
so let's look a little more at what's
[316]
included in the pricing and the
[318]
different levels of turbo tax the free
[320]
one they state is for simple returns
[322]
only it is free for federal and state
[325]
which is a really good deal but it
[327]
doesn't include any kind of support
[328]
whatsoever if you want any kind of
[330]
support you have to upgrade to that
[332]
deluxe level deluxe is the 39 for the
[335]
federal plus 39 for state so that gets
[338]
really expensive and then they have even
[341]
higher level options for other different
[343]
types of returns overall i do think the
[345]
turbo tax website version or the app
[348]
version are both very nice systems but i
[351]
do think they are awfully expensive for
[353]
what they are if you want to see my top
[355]
recommendation for your tax software to
[357]
use now in 2022 check out my next video
[360]
where i compare turbo tax to some other
[362]
great tax software options
