What is an Investment Benchmark? - YouTube

Channel: Talk Money with Tom

[6]
what is a benchmark you know what are some of聽 the big standard ones and how do i make sure i'm聽聽
[11]
using the right benchmark for my investments to聽 evaluate its performance yeah so that's you know聽聽
[17]
what is a stock or bond market benchmark that聽 basically comes up quite often uh you know the聽聽
[25]
one that i talk about on my show that i just聽 covered with the weekly summary is the s p聽聽
[30]
500 i feel like if i have to follow one index聽 that everybody seems to know about that's the聽聽
[37]
one i'd follow it's 500 stocks they're curated by聽 standard and poor's basically so they have to have聽聽
[44]
some earnings and they have different criteria聽 and so they've kind of like a quality screen聽聽
[50]
to get on there but it's fairly representative of聽 the overall market right because it's big enough聽聽
[57]
and it's market cap weighted so the big companies聽 are going to have a bigger impact sometimes that's聽聽
[62]
uh you know not always a good thing but versus the聽 dow which is the one that i hear about the most聽聽
[69]
i mean i don't follow it honestly because it's聽 30 stocks i do follow it a little obviously but聽聽
[75]
it's 30 stocks instead of 500 but it has a really聽 weird connect scenario because it started in 1883.聽聽
[82]
it's actually price weighted it's weighted by聽 the price so a stock that has a higher price聽聽
[90]
will have more impact on the dow and i don't know聽 what price has to do with anything because now you聽聽
[94]
can split and all these things matter of fact i聽 just saw things saying that google and amazon now聽聽
[99]
have a chance to get on the dow because they're聽 splitting uh and because their prices come down聽聽
[105]
whereas before they couldn't get on the dow聽 because you know they would have dominated聽聽
[109]
the dow they were so expensive two three thousand聽 dollars per share so that doesn't make any sense聽聽
[114]
to me i don't know it's an interesting index so聽 and then the next one of course is the nasdaq聽聽
[121]
which is a good index and has been a great聽 index to follow for periods of time it's a聽聽
[125]
thousand stocks uh and it's mostly technology聽 oriented right so that's where you'll see聽聽
[131]
kind of these tech stocks live you can kind of聽 tell what's happening in the growth stock arena聽聽
[135]
by looking at what's happening with the nasdaq聽 and of course we've got the russell 2000 which聽聽
[140]
is uh you know they have the wrestle 3000 which聽 is like most of the stocks on the entire market聽聽
[146]
that one most people don't know about the聽 russell 1000 which is the bigger stocks again聽聽
[151]
that's not when people know that much about the聽 russell 2000 is kind of that bottom two thirds聽聽
[156]
uh it's 2 000 stocks and so if you're looking for聽 what's happening with small cap stocks that day聽聽
[161]
that's what you'd be looking at in my opinion聽 those are the four biggies they're right there on聽聽
[166]
yahoo finance every day one two three four right聽 just in that exact order now if you really want to聽聽
[172]
do what we're doing in terms of benchmarking聽 in my opinion you go to vanguard and you use聽聽
[177]
their existing mutual funds or etfs as your聽 benchmark because vanguard does an incredible job聽聽
[184]
of including so many securities large cap mid cap聽 small cap micro cap which is not included in many聽聽
[193]
and so the vanguard total stock market index is a聽 u.s index right and it has 4136 stocks on it now聽聽
[204]
that changes all the time but聽 something around that number聽聽
[207]
and it's the most broad index it's what we聽 benchmark our u.s holdings against right and聽聽
[213]
then vanguard also has a total international聽 stock market index which is uh very good at聽聽
[219]
replicating the entire international arena聽 emerging markets developed markets all of it聽聽
[225]
and so that's how we benchmark any international聽 holdings that we have in the stock market聽聽
[230]
and then if we have some that are kind of a mix of聽 u.s international that vanguard has a total world聽聽
[236]
right which is the combination of both the total聽 u.s and the total international right so those are聽聽
[242]
three for the stock market uh that's what we use聽 that's how we benchmark our clients have access to聽聽
[248]
a portal where we use those as our benchmarks聽 and the reason i always use those is because聽聽
[252]
anybody can go buy those you can't actually聽 buy the s p 500 you can buy a replica of it聽聽
[258]
and you know that type of thing so you can go buy聽 vanguard for very inexpensive uh and don't have to聽聽
[265]
pay somebody like us so we're trying to show you聽 know did we create value in our management or not聽聽
[270]
after our fees and all those different types did聽 we beat the vanguard or did we not so and then of聽聽
[275]
course just very quickly there's a total uh bond聽 market index uh b and d which is the ticker symbol聽聽
[281]
for the etf is a very good representation of the聽 us bond market total international bond market聽聽
[288]
uh would be for international bonds and聽 then total world right so there's six聽聽
[292]
world stock u.s stock international stock world聽 bond international bond and us bond right so those聽聽
[299]
six can really round out your benchmarking聽 if you really want to see how you're doing聽聽
[304]
then use those indexes in my opinion i talk about聽 the s p 500 because that's what people know about聽聽
[310]
right and so and of the four biggies it's the聽 one that makes the most sense to look at yeah聽聽
[316]
and whenever you're evaluating performance you聽 also don't want to just check check one period you聽聽
[321]
want to be checking you know how they're doing the聽 last couple months how they're doing the last year聽聽
[327]
how are they doing the last three to five years聽 because you know maybe a stock is hot right now聽聽
[332]
or it's cold but maybe it's overall performance聽 for the last three years has been really good聽聽
[338]
yeah yeah i was just looking at聽 a client's account the other day聽聽
[342]
and he was an early investor in facebook now聽 called meta and facebook has had a really hard聽聽
[348]
time here in the last 12 months right i mean聽 really unbelievably uh underperforming say vti聽聽
[355]
the total stock market index with vanguard yet聽 if you back that up just to three or five years聽聽
[361]
he has a fantastic rate of return versus the聽 the overall stock market so yeah perspective聽聽
[367]
on time periods is still pretty important聽 to take a look at and that's a good point
