Channel: Patrick Dang
[0]
if you're looking to learn what b2b
[1]
sales is how it works and whether or not
[3]
it's something you should be
[5]
interested in stick around because we're
[7]
gonna get all your questions
[8]
answered in this video
[9]
[Music]
[12]
what's going on everybody it's patrick
[14]
here before we get started make sure to
[15]
give this video a like
[16]
subscribe and turn on notifications and
[19]
with that said let's go ahead and dive
[21]
in so the first question
[22]
we gotta ask is what is b2b sales well
[25]
the definition that we are going to use
[26]
in this video
[27]
is companies or sales people who sell
[30]
directly
[31]
to other companies and that's why it's
[33]
called b2b
[34]
sales business to business so it's
[37]
essentially when there's any commerce or
[39]
transactions
[40]
that happen between businesses and to
[43]
further clarify what that means let me
[45]
go ahead and give you an example of how
[47]
i started my b2b
[48]
sales career working at oracle so back
[51]
when i was working at oracle i was
[52]
selling human capital management
[54]
software meaning it's just
[55]
hr human resources software for like
[57]
recruiters and people like that
[59]
so one of the main products i was
[60]
selling is taleo and taleo
[62]
is basically an enterprise software and
[64]
i was selling into healthcare companies
[66]
with you know thousands of employees
[67]
and essentially what taleo is is a
[69]
recruiting platform
[71]
for large companies right so the landing
[73]
page on oracle's website doesn't really
[74]
tell you exactly what it is but let me
[76]
go ahead and show you so
[77]
you know for example there's a
[78]
healthcare company called human good
[79]
right
[80]
and they are essentially you know a
[82]
company that helps take care of the
[84]
elderly people and they have a whole
[85]
business
[86]
built around that so for the careers
[88]
because they have thousands of
[89]
caretakers and
[90]
people like that working through their
[92]
different companies when you apply for a
[93]
job right you press apply now
[95]
you know you go to this button on their
[96]
website you want to apply in california
[98]
other western states
[99]
search for jobs and so what happens is
[103]
you know human good goes into
[104]
you see this website over here it says
[106]
abhoud.taleo.net meaning they are using
[109]
taleo which was the software that i was
[111]
selling at the time when i started my
[112]
career at oracle
[113]
to run their recruiting systems so let's
[117]
say
[117]
somebody wanted to you know apply for a
[119]
job as a registered nurse
[121]
so they would click on that and then the
[123]
software basically
[124]
on their website basically they're using
[126]
oracle to manage this entire process
[128]
and when you apply for jobs it goes into
[130]
the software and it's very easy for
[131]
recruiters to see who applied to what
[133]
and
[134]
information like that so as you can see
[135]
when it comes to b2b selling right so i
[137]
was working at oracle i was
[139]
part of a business and i was a
[140]
salesperson and i'm selling my software
[142]
to another business right not the
[144]
individual
[145]
not an individual consumer person i'm
[147]
selling a software for thousands of
[148]
dollars a year
[149]
and you know they're gonna pay for it
[151]
because there's a lot of value to it
[152]
right
[153]
business to business so that's like in
[155]
the enterprise world but let's say
[156]
the startup world what does that look
[158]
like so actually one of my friends
[159]
alan he has a company called crewfire
[162]
and essentially
[163]
it's a software company that's built for
[165]
small businesses
[166]
to you know create referral programs for
[169]
the customers meaning like let's say
[171]
you know your instagram brand like a
[172]
swimwear brand you have 100k
[174]
followers on instagram and you're
[175]
selling your product through instagram
[177]
and you want to
[178]
you know have a referral program or some
[180]
kind of ambassador program to get your
[182]
fans to promote your
[184]
products and your brand and things like
[185]
that well you would use this software to
[187]
manage
[187]
all the people that are helping promote
[189]
your brand and you would you know
[190]
exchange
[191]
value in return maybe you would give
[192]
them a commission maybe you would give
[194]
them you know free clothes whatever the
[196]
case is
[196]
so this software manages that entire
[198]
process so this is business business
[200]
because alan
[201]
you know if you kind of see like pricing
[203]
to even buy crew fire right
[204]
you can't even buy it um on the website
[207]
you would have to you know get pricing
[209]
whether it's starter growth or business
[211]
let's say you go into business get
[212]
pricing and then
[214]
you know over here you would schedule a
[216]
call so in this situation
[218]
you know alan is selling a software
[220]
that's not available to consumer regular
[222]
people there it's only available for
[224]
businesses and the only way to buy it is
[226]
if you actually click on schedule a call
[228]
and you book a call with allen himself
[230]
to see you know whether or not
[231]
you're fit to even buy the software
[233]
right so he has to qualify you
[234]
make sure you're a good fit before you
[236]
move forward with the deal now so that's
[238]
business business now
[239]
you know the thing that i'm not talking
[240]
about is b2c right so business to
[242]
consumer so
[243]
some b2c commerce might be let's say you
[246]
are subscribed to netflix right you're
[247]
not necessarily a business
[249]
you're just a regular individual person
[251]
and you go on netflix and you know you
[252]
pay like 10 15 bucks a month
[254]
to get access to netflix right so these
[256]
price points are a lot smaller
[258]
right because it's for regular people to
[259]
buy or if you're let's say going into
[261]
the nike store or adidas and you're
[263]
buying some sneakers that's business to
[265]
consumer because you're not necessarily
[266]
buying like
[267]
let's say you know a thousand secrets
[269]
for your company you're just buying one
[271]
sneaker for yourself
[272]
business to consumer so now that we
[274]
understand the difference between b2b
[276]
sales
[276]
and b2c the next part of this b2b
[279]
process is to understand the different
[281]
b2b
[282]
sales roles that are available and to
[284]
simplify things i'm going to show you
[286]
the ones that are typically
[287]
most common especially if you are
[289]
starting out your sales career so you
[290]
get a feeling
[292]
of you know what these roles are all
[293]
right so the b2b sales rose the first
[295]
one
[296]
that most people start off with is the
[298]
lead generation side which
[299]
is going to be a sales development rep
[302]
right so the role is
[303]
sales development rep and what you will
[304]
be doing is generating leads
[306]
some other names for you know sales
[308]
development reps might be
[309]
sdr um business development appointment
[312]
setter
[313]
lead generation sales associate so no
[316]
matter what terminology companies use
[318]
when they write you know their job
[319]
descriptions and when they're trying to
[320]
hire
[321]
you basically they're all the same thing
[322]
right whether it's business development
[323]
reps sales development reps they all do
[325]
the same thing
[326]
and that is it's their job to generate
[328]
leads
[329]
right to generate appointments with
[331]
their dream customers and then
[332]
get a closer to get on the phone to try
[334]
to close the deal
[335]
so that's the first process generating
[337]
leads whether it's cold email cold
[339]
calling or linkedin to set up
[340]
appointments
[341]
now who exactly are these appointments
[343]
for it's for account executives right so
[345]
that's actually the next stage usually
[348]
um you know after you become sdr you
[350]
would become an account executive an
[351]
account executive
[352]
is somebody who actually is the one who
[354]
gets on the phone with a potential
[355]
customer
[356]
and they are the one that closed the
[358]
deal so some different levels of account
[360]
executive right and this would also be
[362]
like let's say an inbound closer
[363]
might be an account executive a high
[365]
ticket closer is also account executive
[367]
anybody who closes is essentially an
[369]
account executive but there are
[370]
different levels of this right there's
[372]
small medium business smb
[373]
mid market enterprise right so different
[375]
size companies usually
[377]
the more senior you become the more
[379]
higher level people you would actually
[381]
do business with so for example if
[382]
you're a senior
[383]
you might be you know doing big deals
[385]
with like a starbucks or mcdonald's
[387]
right these are enterprise accounts
[388]
where if you can sell into them
[390]
you know it brings in a lot of money
[391]
because these companies you know spend a
[393]
lot on
[394]
whatever it is whether it's software or
[396]
infrastructure
[397]
or you know raw materials you know
[399]
enterprise is where you want to go if
[400]
you want to do
[401]
less deals but each deal is worth a lot
[403]
more now the next step of the b2b sales
[406]
process
[406]
is being an account manager and these
[408]
are people who basically have to renew
[410]
the customer get them to keep buying
[412]
more
[412]
or sell more to the customer with upsell
[415]
or cross-sell
[416]
sell them different things right so once
[418]
you have a customer the next step to
[420]
monetize that customer even more
[422]
is to sell them different things that
[423]
will complement what you already sold to
[426]
them
[426]
so some other names might be customer
[428]
success a growth account executive
[430]
you know a renewals manager these are
[432]
pretty much all the same thing
[433]
and all that really means is monetizing
[436]
your customer even further
[437]
so even though this chart kind of goes
[439]
from left to right where it's sale sdr
[440]
account executive
[442]
and account manager i'm not necessarily
[444]
saying that account manager is the next
[446]
level after
[447]
account executive right because you know
[448]
they're actually just different parts of
[450]
the sales
[451]
cycle so in terms of hierarchy account
[453]
managers are not more senior than
[454]
account
[455]
executives right they're kind of in
[456]
independent parallel branches
[458]
there are different parts of the sale
[460]
cycle so account executives
[461]
they usually close new deals so these
[464]
guys usually get paid the most because
[465]
it's the most difficult to get new
[467]
clients account managers a lot of times
[469]
not even on a sales quota but maybe
[471]
they're on
[472]
you know a different kind of performance
[473]
basis and it's their job just to make
[475]
the customer happy so
[476]
account managers actually there's less
[478]
pressure because you are only working
[479]
with customers who already bought and
[481]
it's actually a lot easier
[482]
but one thing is for sure is that you
[484]
know sales development reps usually
[486]
are you know in the bottom of the totem
[488]
pole because you know they're generating
[490]
leads although
[490]
extremely important um this is where
[493]
most people start
[494]
and you know because it's the entry
[495]
level job so if you are let's say
[497]
starting a sales career and you don't
[499]
have any experience
[500]
maybe you have some random experience
[502]
where you deal with people but you never
[503]
had let's say tech sales experience or
[505]
you know been in an organization where
[507]
they divide up b2b sales like this
[509]
like i said before usually you're going
[510]
to start over here sales development rep
[512]
and these are entry level jobs that you
[514]
can learn on the job and you don't
[515]
really have to have any prior skills to
[517]
do it
[518]
as long as you're good with people um
[519]
you're willing to learn uh you can
[521]
probably do well with this job
[522]
from there you can either become an
[524]
account executive or you can become an
[526]
account manager
[527]
depends which route you want to go
[529]
yourself or you can even be
[530]
the manager to other sales development
[533]
reps right so you want to think of
[535]
each of these different verticals as
[538]
parallel
[538]
verticals where each you know if you're
[540]
a sales member rep you're going to have
[541]
a sales development manager and that's
[543]
going to be a different manager from
[544]
let's say
[545]
the uh account executive manager right
[547]
so these are all parallel b2b
[549]
sales roles and normally when you start
[552]
off as a sales development rep
[554]
you might be doing it for six months to
[556]
two years depending on how good you are
[558]
and how fast you learn
[559]
and then from there you can make a
[560]
decision on whether you want to advance
[562]
into the account executive role and
[563]
start closing deals or if you want to be
[565]
an account manager and help renew
[566]
customers and
[567]
cross sale or if you want to be a
[569]
manager in another capacity
[570]
or you can even go completely left field
[573]
and not do any of these roles and do
[574]
something else within the sales
[575]
organization right there's the sales
[577]
operations customer service you know
[578]
there's so many different roles in sales
[580]
it actually becomes very complex
[582]
especially at large companies at oracle
[584]
but generally when you're starting out
[585]
these are the main three that you kind
[586]
of want to look at to see you know what
[588]
the potential is and then from there
[589]
when you start working at the company
[591]
you'll see you know what works for you
[592]
based on your personality right because
[594]
not everybody wants to be an account
[596]
executive right because a lot of
[596]
pressure doing it some people want to be
[598]
an account manager and that's totally
[600]
okay right so it's really up to you in
[602]
terms of you know what fits best for
[603]
your personality and what
[605]
you want to do on a day-to-day basis so
[606]
that said that's going to be b2b sales
[608]
in a nutshell
[609]
if you enjoy this video make sure to
