WHEN To Play Bass Fills (3 Places That Will ALWAYS Work) - YouTube
Channel: Luke from Become A Bassist
[0]
you don't want to be you know Rambo you
[2]
know just go with a machine-gun just
[4]
firing away instead with your fills you
[8]
want to be a sniper hi I'm Luke Trimble
[10]
come a bassist and in this bass lesson
[12]
you're going to learn three of the best
[14]
places to place your fills as a bass
[17]
player
[20]
[Music]
[22]
welcome to become a bassist where it's
[25]
all about no BS based lessons to help
[27]
you play better bass have tons of fun
[29]
and become the best bassist that you can
[31]
be today it's all about fills now not
[34]
necessarily what to play when you're
[36]
playing fills that's what people usually
[37]
talk about when they're you know talking
[39]
about fills and all that kind of stuff
[40]
but people really talk about where to
[43]
put your fills and that's probably just
[45]
as important as making sure you're
[47]
playing the right things you know if
[48]
you're playing the correct notes but in
[50]
the wrong place you can have a bad time
[52]
one trap that a lot of people fall into
[54]
and I definitely know I fell into this
[56]
trap when I was younger was just play
[59]
fills everywhere just about every four
[60]
bars regardless of what was going on in
[62]
the music and you know it's
[64]
understandable you learn some cool new
[66]
stuff and you want to play it you want
[68]
to use it so you end up putting fills
[69]
just absolutely everywhere left right
[71]
and center but you don't want to be you
[74]
know Rambo you know just go with a
[75]
machine-gun just firing away instead
[79]
with your fills you want to be a sniper
[82]
you want to strategically pick the
[84]
places where you're going to fill and
[86]
then execute so let's talk about some of
[88]
the best places to actually do this
[91]
first place that's really obvious to
[92]
play a fill is when there is a gap
[94]
specifically for the base to play one if
[97]
you think about songs like the Beatles I
[98]
want you there's this kind of big
[100]
build-up on an E chord and then
[103]
throughout the section there's these
[104]
breaks where it's nothing but space for
[106]
the bass to play yeah we get one two
[108]
three four one two three four there's
[111]
that space set two three four space two
[115]
three four and it's in these spaces that
[118]
Paul McCartney he plays something like
[120]
this one two three four one yeah
[126]
super iconic super famous it's almost
[129]
like part of the baseline rather than a
[131]
fill but it is totally just like that
[135]
now this is perfect because the song was
[137]
written with these brakes in mind right
[140]
the same thing happens at the end of the
[142]
first chorus of easy by the Commodores
[144]
we're getting to the end of the chorus
[145]
he likes Sunday
[151]
and then we get this two three yeah easy
[158]
like Sunday morning three four one upon
[163]
me
[165]
one two three bucka bucka gotta go back
[172]
yeah there's that space in there and the
[175]
bass fills up with that now I'm not sure
[177]
if that space was left deliberately for
[179]
the bass but the bass is you know what
[181]
ended up filling that space and it works
[183]
so well anytime there's space for a fill
[187]
it is possible to throw one in but you
[189]
know sometimes space without a fill is
[191]
what's needed for the song remember
[193]
you're not Rambo you're a sniper you
[195]
want to place your fields strategically
[197]
and hopefully make the song better
[199]
instead of making it worse I know I was
[202]
when I was a Rambo I totally made things
[203]
worse let's actually give this a try
[205]
I've got a little drum track here with a
[207]
little space at the end of every phrase
[208]
that we can put a little fill now the
[210]
track by itself sounds like this two
[219]
three four two and space yeah so let's
[223]
just fly it out let's let's pretend we
[226]
have like a chord progression that goes
[228]
[Music]
[232]
yeah so we get and E flat and then over
[239]
break we'll put that built right there
[240]
yeah makes sense right I'm good
[243]
it's like a two bar phrase and then
[245]
we'll put a fill at two so
[247]
[Music]
[268]
yeah see how that works there's that
[271]
space there and I'm sure you kind of get
[273]
the picture now the real trick is in
[275]
making sure that nobody else plays there
[277]
if there is a space specifically for the
[279]
base you get you know greedy guitarists
[282]
or / sells drummers they kind of come in
[284]
and step all over your toes you want to
[286]
avoid that if you can and like really
[288]
make that like a base feature all right
[290]
place number 2 to put fills is as a way
[293]
of increasing intensity and the tension
[295]
in a song one of my favorite films of
[298]
all time comes from overnight
[300]
December 63 and that Phil does exactly
[303]
this raises the intensity it's at the
[305]
end of a section of a song there's a
[307]
whole bunch of other stuff going on
[308]
drums are filling at the same time
[310]
vocals are still singing but man it's so
[313]
cool I can't sing play that at the same
[324]
time the Phil sound like this yeah just
[330]
like that but this does the job of
[332]
making things busier it creates tension
[334]
and then when we go back to the verse
[337]
[Music]
[338]
down there that tension is released
[341]
everything feels good this is the
[344]
perfect place to put a film usually
[346]
these kinds of fills happen at the ends
[348]
of sections for example at the end of a
[350]
verse and then going into a chorus or
[352]
chorus going back into a verse basically
[354]
anytime there's a big shift in this
[356]
section the really tricky part about
[358]
doing these kind of fills is that there
[360]
will likely be other people who feel the
[362]
urge to fill as well and it can work
[365]
with multiple people playful at the same
[366]
time but more often than not it'll end
[368]
up being a bit of a train wreck so make
[370]
sure that if you do this kind of fill
[371]
that you're not make up straight make
[374]
sure that if you do do this kind of fill
[375]
that you end on beat one of the next
[378]
section and be super strong about it if
[380]
you look back at the old water night
[381]
example it does exactly this we end up
[384]
up here but when we get to the next
[387]
section the one lands hard on that D
[389]
flat at that start of the next section
[391]
perfect
[392]
the third really prime spot for bass
[394]
fills is in unexpected kinds of places
[397]
so typically drummers will fill into new
[399]
sections and you know mark new sections
[401]
with big fills and like I said that can
[404]
be a train wreck if you're playing a
[405]
fill at the same time the solution fill
[408]
in between these big markers so for
[411]
example if the song you're playing has a
[413]
four bar phrase as a verse try putting a
[415]
fill in the middle of the phrase rather
[417]
than at the end of it to avoid stepping
[419]
on anyone's toes so if we had something
[421]
like this where the drum is playing a
[424]
fill every four bars so this is by three
[428]
two three four four two yeah so if the
[434]
drum is playing every four bars of fill
[436]
we can play it in the middle of that
[438]
phrase yeah so let's wind it up again
[441]
fill it's almost like trading off fills
[464]
[Music]
[469]
[Music]
[473]
that's idea yeah out of the way of the
[477]
drum fill and you can see how this works
[479]
you'll stay out of each other's way but
[482]
still having the chance to actually play
[483]
your fills and all your fancy stuff now
[486]
in this example I'm definitely being
[487]
more of a Rambo than a sniper but that's
[489]
just you know show you these examples on
[491]
a real gig I would not feel nearly as
[494]
much one guy that I have enormous
[496]
respect for his playing is Nate Mandel
[498]
the bass player for the Foo Fighters now
[500]
he gets a fair bit of hate in bass
[502]
playing circles on line which I don't
[503]
really understand because I guess people
[505]
feel like his playing is too simple or
[507]
they have the mindset of you know I
[509]
could have done that but what I love
[510]
about Nate
[511]
bells playing is how strategically he
[514]
fills rarely will he play more than a
[516]
couple of fills per song but the ones he
[518]
does play they're super incredible
[520]
they're perfectly placed there in the
[522]
right vibe they're very understated I
[524]
love everything about them I think it's
[526]
amazing now whether that's Nate himself
[528]
making those decisions or someone else
[530]
in the band or its maybe producer in the
[532]
studio it's just about perfect for the
[534]
song every single time a great example
[537]
of this is the song best of you and
[538]
there's this big section massive section
[540]
at the end of the song that's the kind
[542]
of emotional peak so to add to the whole
[545]
kind of epic feel of the song he adds in
[547]
a couple of fills the kind of regular
[549]
bass line is just eighth notes on the
[553]
roots of the chords but in this section
[556]
he has something like this yeah I'm not
[564]
sure if that's exactly what it is I
[565]
can't remember but it's super super
[567]
subtle and I think there's another one
[569]
in that same section as well it's a
[570]
super subtle thing that you might not
[572]
even notice on the first listen but it's
[574]
exactly the right idea when it comes to
[576]
playing fills this is the kind of second
[578]
fill where it raises the intensity and
[580]
it's like I said perfect also like I
[583]
mentioned before one of my favorite
[584]
fields of all time is from December 63
[586]
now we didn't really have time to go
[588]
over the whole thing in detail in this
[589]
video but I'd love to show you how to
[591]
play it in this video right here I go
[593]
through exactly how to play it note by
[595]
note but I also show you how you can
[597]
adapt and use the fill for so much more
[599]
than just the one song so if you're
[601]
ready to learn what I think is the best
[602]
baseball of all time
[603]
I'll see you in that video there
