Hello, everybody, my name is Jay, I'm one of the聽
expert IELTS teachers here at E2Language, what聽聽
[6]
we're going to do is not write an essay, instead,聽
we're going to look at some top tips. One tip聽聽
[13]
in particular, which I'm afraid to say will come聽
right at the end of this presentation. But I need聽聽
[18]
to take you through this presentation so that that聽
tip at the end really makes sense to you. And so,聽聽
[23]
you fully utilize it to your benefit. So, what聽
we're going to do specifically is look at real聽聽
[29]
tips for how to score an eight plus in writing聽
task two. Okay. Let me first tell you my little聽聽
[37]
experience maybe you've heard this before,聽
maybe you haven't. I'm an English teacher,聽聽
[41]
obviously, I'm a native English speaker,聽
I had to take the IELTS four times,聽聽
[46]
before I got a decent score in writing, I could聽
get nines in reading, listening and speaking,聽聽
[52]
not no problem was still challenging. But聽
writing I got stuck on 7.5 three times. And so,聽聽
[60]
I did some investigation into why it is that I聽
got stuck and why so many people get stuck at聽聽
[66]
sort of 6.5 to 7. And it turns out that there are聽
certain ways that you need to write your essay in聽聽
[74]
order to boost your score. So, one of those ways聽
is looking at grammar. And that's what we're going聽聽
[80]
to look at here. These ugly looking things are聽
what the examiners use to mark your writing.聽聽
[86]
And there's one here which focuses on two things,聽
grammatical range, and grammatical accuracy. Okay,聽聽
[94]
these two things are key for boosting your score.聽
The first one grammatical range means variety of聽聽
[105]
sentence types. Okay, you need to use a variety of聽
different sentence types to boost your score and聽聽
[112]
grammatical accuracy. Well, it means grammatical聽
accuracy that your sentences are correct and聽聽
[118]
accurate. And there is s on the end of plural聽
nouns, and you use articles properly and your verb聽聽
[123]
tenses are straight, etc. Have a look at these two聽
paragraphs. These two paragraphs have perfectly聽聽
[133]
accurate grammar. Okay, so I mentioned that you聽
wrote these two paragraphs, and everything you聽聽
[140]
wrote was just 100% accurate. However, there's a聽
big problem here. And that problem is range. These聽聽
[150]
sentences are all simple sentences, or compound聽
sentences. There are no complex sentences.聽聽
[159]
There are no modal verbs. There are no question聽
sentences, there are no conditionals. They're all聽聽
[166]
just simple sentences. So, what score Do you think聽
you would get for grammar? You would get a four.聽聽
[173]
Because here in the criteria, what the examiners聽
look at, it says, rare use of subordinate clause,聽聽
[181]
I'm going to show you what a subordinate clause聽
is in a minute. But the maximum score you can get聽聽
[187]
the maximum score you can get if you do not use聽
a variety of sentence structures is four. Okay,聽聽
[194]
so even if your accuracy is nine, but your range聽
is four your score for grammar will be four.聽聽
[201]
That's the highest you can possibly get. So, let's聽
say then, let's say you wrote perfectly on task,聽聽
[211]
and you answered the essay question, and the聽
examiner gave you an eight for that part.聽聽
[214]
And the way that you structured the essay and聽
structured your paragraphs, the examiner gave聽聽
[220]
you an eight for that part. And your vocabulary聽
was excellent. It was very wide ranging. So,聽聽
[226]
the examiner gave you an eight for that part.聽
But the examiner gave you a four for grammar,聽聽
[230]
because your range was limited. In that case,聽
the average for your total writing band score聽聽
[237]
would be seven, because the four brings it down to聽
seven. And let's say the same thing happened here,聽聽
[244]
you got seven for tasks seven for structure, seven聽
for vocab and four for grammar. The maximum score聽聽
[251]
you can get for writing then because of the聽
grammar score is six, right. So, the super聽聽
[259]
tip is this, you need to use a wide variety of聽
sentence types in your essay. And if you don't,聽聽
[266]
the same thing will happen to you that happened聽
to me and your mark will get stuck on something聽聽
[272]
poor. Okay. So, what we're going to do in this聽
lesson is we're going to look at different聽聽
[276]
sentence types. I'm going to show you seven,聽
seven. I can't remember six or seven different聽聽
[282]
sentence types. But we're specifically聽
going to focus in on complex sentences,聽聽
[287]
and a particular type of complex sentence called a聽
subordinate clause. Don't worry, it sounds crazy,聽聽
[293]
but it's pretty easy. You probably already聽
know it. So, let's have a look. So, in fact,聽聽
[299]
I want to show you six different sentence types.聽
First of all, let's start with simple sentences.聽聽
[304]
These are obviously quite straightforward. So,聽
a simple sentence has one idea. Let's use the聽聽
[313]
question prompts Let's say the question prompt聽
said something about the government should tax聽聽
[318]
sugary drinks. That's your writing task two essay聽
prompt or part of it. So here are three simple聽聽
[325]
sentences. This is 1, 2, 3. Sugar makes people聽
unhealthy. Okay, it's got it's got a subject,聽聽
[333]
it's got a verb, and it's got an object here,聽
or people gain weight from sugar. Okay, again,聽聽
[340]
subject verb object, sugar harms people's teeth.聽
These three are examples of simple sentences,聽聽
[348]
you should definitely include simple sentences聽
in your essay, but again, it's about variety. So,聽聽
[353]
let's look at compound sentences. compound聽
sentences are when you have one idea plus another聽聽
[361]
idea. For example, let's say the question prompt,聽
again, is government should attack sugary drinks,聽聽
[368]
you say sugar makes people unhealthy, and it harms聽
their teeth. So here, we're using a conjunction聽聽
[377]
like; and, for yet, but, so, or, or nor, there's a聽
few different conjunctions or different ways that聽聽
[387]
you can create a compound sentence. Fine. These聽
ones are the critical ones, you need to include聽聽
[395]
what I'm about to show you into your essay. And聽
I suggest you include at least five, at least聽聽
[403]
five of these complex sentences using these words.聽
These are the words that the IELTS examiners look聽聽
[409]
for. These are the sentence types that create聽
subordination, which I'll show you in a second;聽聽
[414]
after, although, as, because, before, even if,聽
even though, if, in order that, once, provided聽聽
[421]
that, rather than, since, so that, then, that,聽
though, unless, until, when, whenever, where,聽聽
[428]
whereas, who, whether, while, and which. Okay,聽
so let's have a look at some examples here. So,聽聽
[436]
what a complex sentence does, it coordinates聽
two or more ideas into a single sentence. So,聽聽
[442]
the prompt is the government should tax聽
sugary drinks, my complex sentence using the聽聽
[449]
connector while is this. While some people will聽
support the tax, others will be against it. So,聽聽
[458]
let's remove this and let's have a look at let's聽
say it just said some people will support the tax聽聽
[465]
full stop. Others will be against it. So here聽
I've got two simple sentences. But if I use one聽聽
[473]
of these subordinate clause type words, like while聽
I can create a complex sentence, okay, and these聽聽
[482]
are the sentences that make you win in IELTS聽
writing. So, what I did on my fourth attempt,聽聽
[489]
after I investigated and did all this homework聽
and realize what was going on, and actually had聽聽
[494]
a meeting with the IELTS, people. When I wrote聽
my fourth attempt, I thought, okay, usually聽聽
[503]
when I write essays or emails, or whatever, I聽
like to write short, simple sentences, because聽聽
[508]
I believe that they're clearer. But that's not聽
what you should do in the IELTS, you need to use聽聽
[512]
a variety as I said, so what I did on the fourth聽
attempt was, I use a whole variety of different聽聽
[518]
sentence types. I use complex ones and compound聽
ones and simple ones, I even put questions in聽聽
[523]
made sure they were passive. I use modal verbs,聽
that dah, dah, dah, dah, but I made sure that I聽聽
[528]
had at least five of these complex structures. Now聽
I want you to try to write a few. Okay. I'm going聽聽
[536]
to give you two minutes to write three complex聽
sentences. The prompt is the government should聽聽
[543]
tax sugary drinks. So your complex sentence will聽
go although dot dot dot dot dot comma dot dot,聽聽
[550]
dot, dot, dot full stop, or dah dah dah dah, dah,聽
so that da da da, da, da, because dah dah dah dah,聽聽
[557]
dah dah dah, dah, dah. So, try to fill these gaps聽
with some information from the prompt. You have聽聽
[565]
two minutes to write three complex sentences to聽
increase your IELTS band score. Starting now.聽聽
[691]
Okay, maybe you need more time. Seeing people聽
sort of still on the first type of sentence.聽聽
[703]
Let me push on. What I want you to do, if you聽
haven't finished, I want you to pause the video,聽聽
[712]
go back and finish those three sentences. Okay.聽
I'm going to show you mine. But if you haven't聽聽
[718]
finished, please go back and do that. Now. Let聽
me show you mine. Okay, here are my examples,聽聽
[725]
although people will benefit companies will聽
suffer. Again, let's look at this because聽聽
[732]
what's going on? Let's say we get rid of this.聽
And we've said people will benefit. Companies聽聽
[738]
will suffer two simple sentences. Or I can make聽
a complex sentence using this powerful word聽聽
[745]
here. What about so that the government should tax聽
sodas so that the public becomes healthier. Okay,聽聽
[755]
again, I've got two simple sentences, but I've聽
created a complex sentence using so that . What聽聽
[762]
about number three, using the word because at聽
the beginning of the sentence, because people聽聽
[768]
are becoming more obese, the government should聽
tax sugary drinks. There you go. It's actually聽聽
[776]
I shouldn't say it's not that hard. It's hard聽
to get these accurate and you definitely need聽聽
[781]
to practice them. Because as I said, without them聽
four is the maximum score you can get in grammar,聽聽
[787]
okay. I seriously mean that you can double check聽
the criteria if you want. They're extraordinarily聽聽
[794]
important sentence types. So, the big take home聽
message is this you need to use complex sentences聽聽
[801]
in your writing task. One and two, by the way,聽
use it in both of your writing tasks. Let's have聽聽
[807]
a quick look at the other sentence types before聽
we finish, so passive sentences. So, the prompt聽聽
[812]
again, the government should tax sugary drinks.聽
Well, a passive sentence is when you reverse the聽聽
[817]
order of the subject and the object. For example,聽
here's the active sentence. Food scientists know聽聽
[822]
that sugary drinks are addictive. Let's say聽
we want to reverse this order. And we don't聽聽
[829]
want to talk about food scientists we can say聽
sugary drinks are known to be addictive. Okay,聽聽
[834]
so I've created a passive form from the active聽
form there. So passive sentences are also聽聽
[839]
important in your writing to show variety. Let's聽
have a look at a question sentence. But what is聽聽
[848]
sugar tax really work? My suggestion here is to聽
use one question in your essay. I think they work聽聽
[857]
really well if they're placed properly, okay.聽
They can work really well if I put one in my聽聽
[864]
last one where I got the 8.5. And I think I put聽
it in the introduction. But it was just a short,聽聽
[870]
simple sentence as a question type. And it just聽
created a nice sort of narrative voice for the聽聽
[877]
essay. And it just added to my variety. So do聽
think about putting perhaps one question into聽聽
[883]
your essay there because it can work well. The聽
last one is conditional sent. Last one is our聽聽
[890]
conditional sentences. These are somewhat complex.聽
These are conditional sentences or sentences that聽聽
[897]
start with if; if sentences. So, if the government聽
had text sugary drinks earlier, then we would not聽聽
[905]
have an obesity issue now. So how do you strike a聽
balance, between grammatical range and grammatical聽聽
[916]
accuracy? Because perhaps if you're attempting聽
to use a wider variety of sentence types,聽聽
[924]
your accuracy will go down. Or maybe if you're聽
trying to be very accurate, your grammatical range聽聽
[931]
will go down. So how do you strike that balance聽
between variety and accuracy? That's a critical聽聽
[938]
question. The question is, do you need to strike a聽
balance? Here's the thing, if you do not attempt,聽聽
[947]
if there is rare use of subordinate clauses, in聽
other words, you rarely use complex structures,聽聽
[954]
then you will get a four. Okay. But if you attempt聽
complex sentences, even if they're less accurate,聽聽
[967]
remember, this is the same thing that the IELTS聽
examiners are looking at the end when they're聽聽
[972]
marking your writing, you can get a five. Of聽
course, if you're even if let's say you're聽聽
[978]
a native English speaker, so your accuracy is聽
nine, you should definitely try to attempt a wide聽聽
[985]
variety of different sentence structures, because聽
then we'll just boost your score. But even if your聽聽
[989]
English is quite poor, and you're worried about聽
accuracy, at least try to use a wide variety. So,聽聽
[996]
the takeaway message, the key point that I wanted聽
to talk about right at the beginning, which I led聽聽
[1001]
you through is. Variety, sentence variety is聽
more important than sentence accuracy. So,聽聽
[1011]
on test day, you should attempt to use a wide聽
variety of sentence types, including the six聽聽
[1017]
that I showed you, in this live class. And even聽
if the accuracy is not 100%, doesn't matter, it聽聽
[1025]
will increase your chances of scoring better than聽
if you are conservative, and just attempt simple聽聽
[1033]
structures. That my friend is the end of that聽
presentation. If you need help with your IELTS聽聽
