For our next story, we need to warn you--
[2]
it contains images that may be disturbing for some viewers.
[7]
The crime of this pure evil overkill.
[9]
NARRATOR: We're in Knoxville, Tennessee for the trial
[11]
of 32-year-old Joel Guy Jr. He's charged with two
[15]
counts of first degree murder in the vicious killing
[18]
and dismemberment of his own parents,
[21]
Joel Guy Sr. and his wife Lisa.
[25]
It was the Monday after Thanksgiving weekend.
[28]
Lisa Guy had not shown up for work,
[30]
and her employer made a call to police.
[47]
NARRATOR: When officers arrived, they discovered a grisly scene.
[51]
Hello!
[51]
Sheriff's office!
[54]
Police!
[56]
Sheriff's Office!
[62]
Knox County Sheriff's office!
[64]
We're here to check your welfare!
[82]
NARRATOR: Inside, police found the remains of Joel and Lisa,
[85]
who were both stabbed over 30 times and dismembered.
[92]
Their son, Joel Jr., was the first and only suspect.
[97]
He'd spent Thanksgiving with his parents,
[98]
and made charges to his father's credit card after the murders.
[103]
His parents had been supporting the 28-year-old for years,
[106]
and recently told Guy they were cutting him off financially.
[110]
Police believed Guy was angry, and hoped
[112]
to cash in on his parents' life insurance policy.
[117]
He was charged with first degree premeditated murder
[120]
and abuse of two corpses.
[122]
He pled not guilty.
[126]
At trial, the prosecutor described the viciousness
[128]
of the attacks and Guy's attempt to eliminate the evidence,
[134]
all while Guy listened to the graphic description
[137]
of the crime scene.
[138]
He covered them with a corrosive substance
[142]
and left them there to liquefy into some sort
[149]
of diabolical stew of human remains.
[154]
NARRATOR: The jury was shown surveillance footage
[156]
of the defendant with a hand wound,
[158]
buying products apparently to help dispose of the bodies.
[162]
She paid for the tubs that she and her husband
[167]
disintegrated in.
[171]
NARRATOR: And perhaps most incriminating
[173]
was Guy's notebook, which contained written excerpts
[176]
outlining his plan, including one that
[179]
read "get plastic sheeting for disposal process," and "money,
[184]
all mine, $500,000."
[190]
After hearing all the testimony and reviewing the evidence,
[193]
the jury returned with a unanimous verdict.
[198]
JUROR: We the jury find the defendant, Joel Michael Guy,
[201]
guilty of first degree premeditated
[203]
murder of Joel Guy Sr.
[206]
Count number two, please.
[207]
JUROR: We the jury find the defendant, Joel Michael Guy,
[210]
guilty of first degree premeditated
[212]
murder of Lisa Guy.
[216]
NARRATOR: Before sentencing, family members gave impact
[218]
statements about the victims, and the nightmare they
[221]
were forced to live through.
[224]
The next day after we buried Joel and Lisa, my mother died.
[227]
She truly died of a broken heart.
[230]
The impact of this crime is notorious.
[233]
We will never, ever be the same.
[236]
I am Joel and Lisa's daughter.
[239]
You'll never know what it is like to have to tell your--
[243]
your children that their grandparents
[245]
have been chopped up and put in acid.
[250]
NARRATOR: The last person to speak
[251]
was the judge, Steve Sword.
[274]
NARRATOR: Guy was sentenced to two life
[276]
sentences, plus four additional years
[278]
for his treatment of the remains.
[281]
He won't be eligible for parole until the year 2071,
[285]
when he'd be 83 years old.
