Channel: BrentInvesting
[5]
hello everyone and thanks for tuning
into the financial investor channel my
[10]
name is Brent and today and we're gonna
go over four ways you can sell on the m1
[14]
finance platform I see this question pop
up a lot how do I sell stocks
[19]
exchange-traded funds or PI's on the m1
finance platform is there a best method
[25]
and today's video we're gonna be
covering all four methods of selling
[28]
stocks on the m1 finance platform so if
you are brand new to the channel have
[33]
not yet subscribed hit that subscribe
button below I cover the stock market
[37]
dividends real estate personal finance
we're trying to hit 5,000 subscribers
[41]
here on the channel so let's hit that
goal together build up this community if
[46]
you enjoyed this video find a help will
hit the thumbs up and if you have any
[50]
comments questions you'd like to ask or
have a video created here on the channel
[54]
drop it in the comment section if it's a
comment that I believe will help all the
[57]
viewers subscribers here I will go ahead
and make a video targeting that some
[61]
sort of question and answering here on
the channel so with that out of the way
[65]
let's go into the four ways you can sell
on the m1 finance platform I'm gonna go
[69]
ahead and flip my screen around here to
my on screen here and currently we are
[74]
inside the m1 finance desktop dashboard
now here we can see our equity our gains
[81]
or losses etc now we're going to cover
four ways to sell now depending on how
[87]
many stocks you have in your portfolio
you are going to have your either
[91]
exchange-traded funds you're gonna have
your stocks you're gonna have pies here
[95]
that you've created on the platform and
that's gonna be a piece of your slice
[99]
now the very first way that you can
begin to sell on the m1 finance platform
[103]
is by just on the main portfolio
dashboard you're gonna have a couple
[108]
options here you can say like buy and
sell and select the sell option now here
[114]
what you're going to be doing if you
were to select this put on $100.00 in
[118]
here and sell if you had multiple
equities within this pie you would
[124]
actually sell $100 worth of a random
amount of companies normally it would
[130]
target the companies that you have
it would sell the overweight companies
[135]
in your portfolio and you would have
$100 left in your account now this may
[140]
sell Woonsocket could sell to stocks
depending on how many companies you have
[144]
within your portfolio they could sell
any number of companies out there now
[148]
this could create a bit of a headache
during tax season as each one of these
[152]
sells and that doesn't say a taxable
County individual comp is a taxable
[158]
event so you don't want to be doing this
method because if you're selling on the
[162]
dash board Excel itself and selecting
sell and selling out of multiple port
[167]
stocks that is creating multiple taxable
events and then you know not an OBE WeDo
[174]
of no bueno scenario there now that is
the first method by clicking on your
[178]
portfolio just selling out of all the
equities within your portfolio by the
[181]
overweight ones a certain dollar amount
now the second method in my preferred
[187]
method of selling stocks is to scroll
down here looking look for either your
[192]
stock your exchange-traded fund or your
PI and open it up until you get down
[198]
into the individual stock or
exchange-traded fund and select it now
[202]
while you're inside of this specific
fund you can see here that the account
[207]
is the individual account where now down
in the actual fund itself here we can
[212]
sell this specific fund or stock or
security by selecting cell and what it
[218]
would do here is if we sold this
specific company I could have a hundred
[221]
stocks in this portfolio it would only
sell 100 dollars of this specific
[227]
security and then jumping back out here
this could be probably a bad example
[232]
I'll jump over into the Roth so in the
Roth I have multiple stocks here I could
[237]
if I wanted to sell out a Cisco right
now say I'm up two hundred and ten
[240]
dollars I want to take profits right now
I could specifically select Cisco go
[244]
into buy sell drop over into the sell
and sell 210 210 dollars of my games I
[253]
would be taking my gains out of the
market and just selling it and then I
[256]
can move that 210 dollars elsewhere just
kind of leaving in cash in order to
[261]
invest somewhere else or kind of way for
Cisco to come back down off their highs
[264]
but that would
be the second method in my preferred
[268]
method of selling on the m1 finance
platform now jump it back over into the
[273]
individual in here now we've covered how
to sell from the portfolio we've covered
[278]
how to sell individually now there's a
third auction here and that is by going
[283]
and clicking the rebalance now if you
have this probably not a good one for
[288]
here we'll jump over to the Roth again
if you have multiple stocks exchanging
[294]
the funds or pies you can see that the
portfolio the pie up top is very jagged
[298]
you can see Walmart up here very high
extended out around the dotted the
[303]
dotted circle on the outside that is our
target percentages we can see here that
[308]
Walmart exceeds the target by quite a
bit if we go over here and look for
[314]
target let's go ahead and find target
target is currently set its current
[319]
equity is at 4.6 out of the total
portfolio equity and its target percent
[325]
is only 2% that is why it exceeds by so
much it is basically 2.6 percent over my
[332]
target that I have set for Walmart that
is why this is extended now if I were to
[337]
go in here and set like the rebalance
and then select confirm I would be able
[342]
to rebalance everything it would sell
all of my overweight companies so if
[347]
here if I reap out if I select here
it'll show you all of these companies
[352]
here that are up towards the top all
right see that's the best way it'll
[355]
settle out of all these physicians that
are overweight so this has a actual
[360]
three point four of three percent three
point nine of three percent two point
[364]
eight of three percent this is actually
underweight three point six of three
[368]
percent this would sell point six five
point one of three percent this was
[372]
basically sell two point one percent of
the equity here it would sell and it
[377]
would move the overweight equity that is
there into these underweight positions
[381]
basically bring in this portfolio
everything would be back and align all
[386]
those jagged positions that are sticking
out will be back down into the actual
[390]
soccer circle and everything would be
aligned within the portfolio but again
[395]
if you're doing this in a taxable
account if you're going in here and
[398]
selecting rebalance inside
a taxable count again this is creating
[402]
another taxable event so you don't want
to be going in here and doing the
[406]
buy/sell from the portfolio you don't
want to go in here and doing your
[409]
rebalance here from your portfolio that
is gonna be creating taxable events for
[413]
you and you don't know how many stocks
is gonna be selling you know I don't
[416]
know how many stocks is gonna be buying
so every time you're doing this
[419]
that's another taxable event on top of
each other now we've covered three ways
[423]
we've covered how to sell from the
portfolio we've covered how to
[426]
individually sell from the slices down
on the bottom portion we've talked about
[432]
how to rebalance your portfolio and how
it'll sell overweight positions and buy
[436]
into underweight positions now the
fourth and final option is by selecting
[441]
edit now inside of the Edit here if I
were to bring in another company here
[447]
I'm gonna go ahead and add Microsoft
here for this example and I'm gonna go
[451]
ahead and hit save and confirm now the
fourth and final option is say I had say
[457]
$100 in Microsoft and I had my Vanguard
SP 500 fund in there and I no longer
[463]
wanted to be invested in Microsoft I
wanted to move all of my cash out of it
[468]
I did it what you don't want to do if
you want to get rid of a specific stock
[472]
all the way out of your portfolio don't
come in here target it and sell the
[476]
equity what this will do is even if you
sell equity inside of a taxable event
[481]
you're gonna sell a dollar amount out of
Microsoft even if I have $100 in
[486]
Microsoft I come in here and punch $100
to sell of Microsoft now the next day
[491]
the markets take off I now have a
hundred and twenty dollars of equity
[495]
within Microsoft and I only sell a
hundred dollars of it I still have 20
[500]
dollars of Microsoft in the account that
creates another taxable event for me in
[505]
the future if I want to continue to sell
another $20 of that equity so instead of
[510]
targeting a stock to sell out of your
portfolio this way if you want to get
[514]
rid of it from your portfolio come on
down here into the edit option here
[519]
you're gonna go ahead and select it and
remove it from your PI this is going to
[523]
remove it as an investment from your
portfolio you're then gonna have to
[528]
increase other portions of your
portfolio and order for you to hit that
[532]
hundred percent rate
and then you're gonna save it what this
[535]
does if because you have removed that
stock from your portfolio it'll actually
[540]
be removed and sold during the next
trading day all those proceeds that
[545]
equity will either be reinvested or
it'll sit in cash within your portfolio
[549]
to be usable in an upcoming day so those
are the four ways of investing again you
[557]
really want to be careful with it a
taxable account because each time you
[561]
rebalance each time you sell from the
portfolio overall each time you edit or
[567]
you just sell an individual stock down
here that creates a taxable event my
[572]
preferred method of selling out of
stocks is just to target them
[576]
specifically and sell if I were to sell
I very rarely sell or take profits I
[582]
probably should be taking profits
currently at all-time highs but at this
[586]
time I am not taking profits but again
we're going over the four methods of
[590]
selling on the n1 finance platform so
again quick recap number one selling
[595]
from the portfolio just overall selling
clicking here you won't have any control
[599]
of how many stocks are actually selling
from it'll normally target you're
[603]
overweight stocks but you have no way of
knowing which stocks in how many stocks
[608]
you're going to be selling out of number
two going down into your slices
[612]
targeting a specific PI and dig it into
the PI a specific stocker
[616]
exchange-traded fund selecting that
specific stock or exchange-traded fund
[621]
selecting buy and sell and selling a
portion of the equity this is not
[626]
removing that specific stock from your
portfolio even if you have $100 and you
[631]
sell $100 and it's a negative day you'll
probably still have that change left in
[635]
the account or in this fund you don't
want to be selling it if you're moving
[639]
out of the portfolio completely or the
stock completely you want to be going
[643]
into the edit the third option was the
rebalance rebalancing your total
[648]
portfolio so that everything is synced
in a circle it'll just look exactly like
[653]
this everything there will be no
jaggedness to it it'll be all one circle
[657]
very sync like and the fourth and final
option if you're trying to get rid of a
[662]
company all the way out of your
portfolio you no longer want to be
[665]
ambassador it you want to go into here
select it and remove it from your pie
[670]
select other companies to meet that
hundred percent threshold and save so
[675]
those are your four ways of selling on
the n1 finance platform I saw this
[681]
question get brought up quite a bit I
really want to make a video because I
[684]
see lots of investors jump it over to
this platform they're making sales by
[688]
selecting individual stocks or exchanged
by exchange-traded fund they're selling
[693]
that company but then they're still
invested but they didn't want to be
[696]
invested in any more so go into your
edit remove the pie or the stock from
[700]
your portfolio and then you're no longer
gonna be invested in it just remember
[705]
again taxable accounts those are all
taxable events and you will have to pay
[709]
taxes on your lot on your gains and
you'll be able to tax harvest your
[712]
losses so that is it for today's video
if you have enjoyed today's video hit
