i've been looking forward to reviewing

this printer since i first told you

about it back in october so let's crack

on with it

to begin with yes it is the mini 8k

even though it's considerably larger

than the mini 4k

it's not a massive printer but it's a

nice decent size

so many it is but by name only

and first impressions are very good

it's a nice sturdy looking printer

the base is quite weighty and solid

the menu screen isn't the biggest i've

seen but it's far from the smallest and
[55]
it's clear and easy to use

the usb port is located on the front but
[61]
far enough away from the menu screen as
[64]
to not get in the way

the power point and switch are located

at the rear

along with a single fan which seems
[73]
fairly quiet in operation

the dual linear rails seem chunky and

firm

the appearance and width alone suggest

ability

there's certainly no wobble here that

i've seen

the build plate also seems chunky

lots of thick metal smoothly engineered

into something robust and quite large

this plate seems bigger than the sonic

4k

it also seems bigger than the mars 2 pro

and you can begin to see why i'm

questioning the name mini 8k now can't

but the shape of the plate is unusual

it's wide but more narrow than we've
[119]
typically seen

it's more a letterbox shape

the surface has a frosted laser-cut

finish and trust me prints stick very
[130]
well to this
[132]
i've actually destroyed a couple of
[133]
prints in the process of removal
[136]
so thicken up those rafts
[139]
the resin tray is metal construction and
[142]
held in place with removable bolts
[145]
so don't drop and lose these
[148]
but there's a nice clear max level
[151]
indicator to avoid overfilling
[155]
and that of course leads us to the heart

of this printer

the 8k lcd screen
[162]
capable of delivering 22 microns of xy

resolution
[168]
and that is a really big deal

i believe this is a world first and

surpasses the resolution of any other
[177]
home grade printer with a staggering

1152 pixels per inch

and this in essence should mean the best

quality prints we've seen at this end of

the printer market
[192]
so i was genuinely excited to get

printing with the mini 8k

but fate had other ideas

when i performed the lcd test something
[203]
didn't look right
[205]
adding a piece of paper made this even
[208]
worse
[209]
and broke my little nerdy heart
[212]
it was a dud
[214]
something was wrong
[217]
but let's be realistic
[218]
these things happen
[220]
it's happened to me and it could happen
[223]
to you
[225]
i got straight on to frozen support and
[228]
they were excellent
[230]
through a couple of very simple videos
[233]
they were able to guide me through a
[235]
quick diagnosis
[237]
ensuring of the mirror inside my printer
[240]
had broken
[242]
now we can't blame frozen for this
[245]
the printer had been very well packed
[248]
and arrived looking perfect
[251]
but look at the box
[253]
see the crease line
[255]
maybe just maybe that's the result of
[259]
being dropped
[260]
and good packaging or not a shock from a
[263]
drop like that might well be enough to
[266]
shatter a mirror
[268]
and these things travel a long way and
[270]
pass through many hands before arriving

at our homes

so again i say these things happen

the good news is frozen responded very
[283]
quickly and shipped out a new mirror in
[285]
less than a week that i was able to
[287]
replace with ease

and that meant i could do some printing
[292]
and i was lucky enough to have a bottle
[294]
of the new frozen aqua 8k resin to test
[297]
with
[298]
so life was looking good

the mini 8k comes shipped with the two
[304]
box slicer as standard

but before any of you abundant hopes of
[309]
purchase on the strength of this
[311]
there is good news
[313]
i've spoken with our friends at luigi
[316]
and they've already prepared a release
[318]
for the frozen mini 8k

so where lychee leads but the slicers
[324]
will follow

which means you'll have plenty of slicer
[327]
options very soon

i always start with the amerilabs town

test print

and look at

this it's incredible

all my prints are at 0.05 layer height

but this looks stunning

i took some stills just to make this

clarity more obvious

though this unfortunately makes my world
[353]
seem incredibly dusty

probably because of all the paper towels

that i use

but looking beyond that and please look

beyond that it's very impressive

next i decided to take a shot at fawn

girl and frankly who can blame me

sure enough the results knocked my socks

off i posted a number of stills on my

instagram account showing off this piece

in great detail

and i can honestly say the mini 8k does

true justice to the beauty of this piece

of course i had to try some jewelry and

this amazing ring designed by eric

keller from the zbrush jewelry workshop

ticked all the boxes for me

based on the jumping spider entomologist
[408]
enthusiast eric put some incredible

detail into this ring

and certainly the mini 8k displays this

well

finally

to really test the mini 8k
[424]
i turned to this incredible design
[426]
called manifesto by 3d wicked
[430]
it took me three days of printing to get
[432]
all the parts i needed but it was
[435]
totally worthwhile
[437]
the results are stunning

it seems i have an excessive collection
[442]
of dust if anybody wants any but the
[444]
prints look great despite this
[447]
and before anybody complains about layer
[449]
lines
[450]
just remember how zoomed in these images
[453]
are
[454]
in real life they still exist
[456]
but are beautifully subtle and easy to
[459]
look past
[461]
now at this point i have to shake a
[464]
fisted frozen for making this a very
[467]
difficult review for me to do
[470]
typically i go out of my way to be
[472]
balanced and point out all the good and
[475]
all the bad features that i can find but
[478]
the mini 8k has me stumped
[481]
there's nothing i can really gripe about

it's all good

but

trying really hard here

the plate surface bonds like stink
[493]
so you'll need to thicken up your rafts
[495]
perhaps
[497]
but i dare say after a few uses this
[500]
bond will lessen to a more acceptable
[502]
level and after all i've done plenty of
[506]
printing here without any issues
[510]
the fully retractable bolts are a bit of
[512]
a pain because they could be lost
[515]
but this is hardly a design exclusive to
[518]
frozen
[519]
and they're just bolts
[522]
and maybe um
[525]
i don't know

maybe

maybe i don't like the colour of the lid

that's a negative i don't care for that

shade

but that would never stop me buying this

printer

it's too damn good

the build quality is certainly up to the
[542]
job

the linear rails are wide and sturdy the
[546]
build plate is built to last forever

but the screen

that incredible 8k screen

it gives us a clarity of print we

haven't seen before on lcd printers

it's simply

excellent and i know right now many of

you will be screaming at me how does it

compare with the any cubic photon ultra

dlp

but all i can say at this moment in time

well that's not an easy call to make

however regardless of that outcome i

have to say that this is the best

printing lcd printer i have personally

come across

able to produce excellent quality prints

on a home grade printer

in essence it's a real winner and a new

standard for others to attain
