Adam Investigates: 12 Days Gifts on Craigslist - YouTube

Channel: TheEllenShow

[0]
- Let me ask you a question, uh,
[1]
how many of you have used Craigslist before?
[4]
[cheers and applause]
[6]
It's the number one site for selling your old garbage
[9]
to creepy strangers.
[10]
[laughter]
[11]
You can find so many things on Craigslist.
[13]
Uh, everything from, like, an apartment
[14]
to a toaster to a boyfriend.
[17]
But recently I found something else out on Craigs--Craigslist.
[21]
Uh, some of my audience members who were here
[24]
for our 12 Days of Giveaways decided to take the gifts
[26]
that I gave them--
[28]
[audience grumbles]
[29]
And sell them online for profit.
[32]
I mean, really, can you believe that?
[33]
Okay, so, I mean, I knew we had an Ellen shop,
[36]
but now there's an Ellen black market.
[37]
[laughter]
[39]
We found all kinds of things.
[41]
We found this Fender guitar,
[44]
and it says, uh, well, it says that they,
[48]
uh, can't use it, but we gave away lessons
[51]
because they said-- anyway, we, uh--
[52]
[laughter]
[54]
There're headphones, there's, uh, an Ellen bike,
[57]
and-- [audience scoffs]
[59]
I know.
[60]
Someone was even selling an ED by Ellen gift card.
[62]
How dare you.
[66]
So here's what we did.
[67]
We set up a little sting operation.
[69]
My writer Adam contacted these people anonymously
[72]
and set up a time to meet.
[73]
They thought they were meeting someone
[75]
who wanted to buy their stuff,
[76]
but really it was Adam and a camera crew
[79]
and, uh, it's very enjoyable.
[82]
[typewriter clicking]
[83]
[investigative music]
[85]
[jingling]
[87]
- All right, let's go.
[90]
Hi there, are you selling the Ellen bike?
[92]
- Yeah.
[93]
- So, uh, so your wife got this bike?
[95]
- My wife got it, yeah.
[97]
- See, Ellen gives these gifts away to people
[98]
and then we found out people are just selling them
[100]
trying to turn-- trying to turn a profit
[102]
on Craigslist. - Eh.
[104]
- Can we see the bike? - It's in a box.
[106]
- Can we open it up and take a look?
[109]
Let's see if we can get this thing together.
[112]
Uh, where your wife listed this online,
[114]
she said, "This is a quality bike
[116]
and even better for anyone who loves Ellen."
[119]
So does she not love Ellen?
[121]
- I mean, everybody's gotta love Ellen.
[123]
- Where's your wife at right now?
[124]
- She has a condo that she's selling.
[126]
- Oh, I see. Do you want to call her,
[127]
and let her know what's going on here?
[129]
- Uh, sure. Let me get my phone.
[132]
[laughter]
[136]
- Hi, babe, um, I got people from the Ellen Show here.
[139]
- You're not even funny. - No, I'm serious.
[142]
- Hi, uh, you were selling the Ellen bike on Craigslist?
[145]
- I didn't realize that was an issue.
[147]
- It's a small issue.
[148]
The cops are on their way right now.
[149]
- No, are you kidding me?
[151]
- No, I'm kidding. It's not illegal.
[153]
It's--it's just ungrateful.
[155]
Why don't you take this bike for a test drive?
[158]
Prancer's gonna spot you as you go.
[161]
There you go.
[162]
Take him around the cul-de-sac, Prancer.
[165]
You can't see this, but it's going really well.
[168]
Go Gary, go Prancer.
[171]
So you still want to get rid of the bike.
[173]
There might be, uh, bike paths in Las Vegas
[177]
at the new property.
[178]
- Yeah, if we move out there.
[179]
- So you guys have a condo, and this house,
[181]
and a property in Vegas, and you're selling a bike
[182]
for $400?
[185]
[typewriter clicking]
[187]
[investigative music]
[189]
- Hi there. - Hi.
[191]
- Are you Jessica? - I am.
[193]
- My name's Adam.
[194]
I'm with the Ellen DeGeneres Show.
[195]
- Oh. - Do you mind
[196]
if I talk to you for a little bit?
[197]
- Yeah. This is hilarious.
[200]
Someone's supposed to be picking up a guitar.
[202]
- Yeah, that's the guitar that Ellen gave you, isn't it?
[204]
- Yes, it is. - So was--
[206]
- Oh, no.
[208]
- So was Ellen's gift not good enough for you?
[210]
- Oh, no, it was amazing. I just don't play guitar.
[213]
- Do you think you would like to try to learn?
[214]
- I think I will now.
[216]
- Now, first thing, first thing.
[217]
You should learn what the strings are.
[218]
Do you know what the strings on the guitar are?
[220]
- Um, no. - Okay.
[222]
So it's E, A, D, G, B, E. - Okay.
[226]
- Do you know how you can remember that?
[227]
- Every good boy deserves fudge.
[228]
- Or you can do "Ellen always does good
[231]
"but everyone disrespects her
[233]
by selling her gifts on Craigslist."
[235]
- Okay. - That's a good way to, uh--
[237]
- It is a good way to remember.
[238]
- You'll always be able to remember that.
[239]
Here, let's try this power chord.
[241]
Put one finger-- put your forefinger here.
[243]
- Uh-huh. - And then put your pinky there.
[245]
On the second string.
[247]
[strums guitar chord]
[250]
- There you go, now sing.
[252]
[singing] - I'm so sorry
[256]
- Sing to the camera.
[257]
[singing] - And I feel guilty
[261]
I'll never betray Ellen again
[265]
[typewriter clicking] [investigative music]
[267]
- Is that guy holding something across the street there?
[270]
- Ben?
[271]
Hi, are you Ben with the headphones?
[273]
Come here.
[275]
So you're selling-- you're selling the headphones
[277]
that Ellen gave you as a gift?
[278]
- Yeah, I didn't go to the show.
[279]
- Oh, you didn't go to the show?
[280]
- My sister did. - Your sister did.
[281]
- With my mom, yeah.
[282]
- And she didn't want these headphones
[283]
that Ellen gave her? - We have two, so yeah.
[285]
- It's still a nice gift, though.
[286]
She could have kept it.
[287]
- Yeah, I mean, we already have a pair so--
[289]
- Uh-huh. - 'Cause I didn't post.
[290]
I said--just-- - Don't try to
[291]
get out of this now. - Yeah, no, I mean--
[293]
- It's too late. Prancer's here.
[294]
I'm here.
[296]
Ellen's watching. - I know, hi, Ellen.
[299]
- You want to come to the next house?
[301]
We found someone else who's also selling their stuff.
[303]
- Yeah, sure, can I--can I bring my sister?
[306]
- Yeah, go get-- where's your sister?
[307]
Go get-- - She's at home.
[308]
- I want to talk to your sister.
[310]
- They were, like, texting me
[311]
and then this bear came and like--
[313]
and I was like, "What is that?"
[315]
- Oh, really? Wait is it an actual guy?
[317]
- Yeah, he's, like, in a suit and everything like--
[319]
- So you were at one
[321]
of the 12 Days of Giveaways shows, right?
[322]
- Yes, I was. - You were?
[324]
- Hi, Prancer.
[325]
- So, uh, you said you had a pair
[327]
of these headphones already? - Yes, I have a pair.
[329]
- But there's two of you.
[330]
Maybe you could have kept both of them.
[332]
- Well, no, my mom was on the show with me
[334]
so we were selling two of them and--
[335]
- So you don't want either of them.
[336]
So kinda what you told me was a lie.
[338]
- I mean, kind of. - So Ben lied to me.
[342]
- So here's the offer I made-- - I'm so sorry, Prancer.
[344]
- So here's the offer I made to Ben.
[346]
Would you guys like to come with us
[347]
to the next--the next person? - Wow.
[349]
- Maybe they would want to trade you for your headphones.
[351]
- Sure.
[353]
[laughter]
[360]
[typewriter clicking] [investigative music]
[362]
- Hi there.
[363]
Are you selling the ED by Ellen gift cards?
[365]
- Uh, yeah.
[366]
- Hi, what's your name? - Travis.
[368]
- Travis, uh, I'm Adam.
[369]
I work for Ellen. - Okay.
[371]
- So, uh, you don't want these-- these wonderful gift cards
[373]
that Ellen gave you?
[374]
Do you remember Prancer? - I do remember Prancer.
[377]
- Well, the gift card was for women's shoes.
[380]
- Now would you be interested in trading with someone else,
[382]
perhaps, for their, uh, 12 Days gifts?
[385]
- Uh, yeah sure. - Uh, this is Emily and Ben.
[388]
- Hi, nice to meet you. - Hi.
[389]
- So, um, would you be interested in headphones
[391]
by any chance? - I would way use headphones.
[393]
- So, how would you like some ED by Ellen shoes?
[396]
- That would be awesome. - Sweet.
[398]
- I better not see this stuff back on Craigslist.
[401]
- Ellen, uh, everybody is happy with their gifts,
[403]
and we met someone who's almost as tall as Prancer.
[406]
So, uh, thank you Ellen. - Thank you, Ellen.
[408]
- Thanks, Ellen.
[409]
[cheers and applause]
[412]
- Thank you, Adam, and thank you, Prancer.
[414]
Ah, that was some great investigative reporting.
[416]
If you want Adam to investigate something, uh, for you,
[419]
please let me know. We'll be right back.
