[3]
Be sure to punch the button so we can hear you loud and clear. Thank
[6]
you. Good morning. Chairman. German recommend Ember Grassley and
[9]
members of the committee. I am Congresswoman Joyce Beatty, chair
[14]
of the Congressional Black Caucus representative for Ohio's third
[18]
district and a proud Hbcu graduate. It is an honor to appear before
[23]
you to express my strong and unwavering support.
[27]
For the nomination of Judge Tangie Brown Jackson to the Supreme Court
[32]
of the United States. As the nation has learned during these hearings,
[37]
Judge Jackson is an exceptionally qualified jurists of unimpeachable
[42]
character.
[44]
As chair of the Congressional Black Caucus. I speak on behalf of
[48]
59 members of Congress, including 28, black women and 31 Black Man.
[56]
Together representing 17 million Black Americans and 82 million
[63]
Americans for over two centuries since our country's founding
[68]
The court consisted exclusively of white men of the 115 justices
[74]
108 have been white men. Judge Jackson would be only the sixth woman.
[81]
And the first black woman to serve on our nation's highest court.
[86]
If confirmed, she would shatter a glass ceiling that many Americans,
[91]
including those who fought and died for voting rights, are more perfect
[97]
union and adjust. America believed that they would never lived to
[101]
see it broken.
[103]
As a black woman myself. I urge this body to remember that Judge
[108]
Jackson's confirmation vote must not be isolated to her gender or
[113]
to her race.
[116]
Instead.
[117]
I urge you to closely examine her credentials and her sterling judicial
[123]
record to me. They read like a storybook for perfectly prepared Jewish
[129]
to sit on the nation's highest court.
[132]
She is grounded in family values, love of God and country and academic
[138]
excellence. In my recent conversation with her
[142]
It became immediately clear why President Biden chose her. Her life
[147]
experience, education and reverence for the rule of law clearly demonstrate.
[154]
That she has been preparing for this moment her entire life.
[159]
Senators this week quoted Dr King and as I am reminded to paraphrase
[165]
King said,
[167]
Give us the ballot so we could put judges on the bench who will do
[172]
justice and love mercy. Judge Jackson will do exactly that.
[178]
Sadly, but not surprisingly, Judge Jackson has been the subject of
[182]
an affair tax. These bad faith efforts exists, despite a resume that
[189]
arguably surpasses those of previous nominees.
[193]
I remind this body
[196]
In America just last year.
[199]
Judge Jackson was confirmed by this body on a bipartisan vote to
[204]
serve on the D C circuit court.
[207]
And that she clerked for Justice. Breyer, who's very seat she is
[213]
being considered for just Jackson's confirmation will send a message
[218]
to black women and little girls like my granddaughter, Leah, whose
[222]
mother is the first black woman to serve on the 10th district Court
[226]
of Appeals, and Leah's first known president was a black man, and
[231]
now she sees a black female vice president.
[234]
So if a guidance counselor tells her your goals are too high, she
[240]
will remember how Judge Jackson sword against adversity as one of
[246]
our nation's brightest legal minds.
[249]
I want to be clear, crystal clear.
[252]
Judge Jackson will be a judge that will serve all of America and
[258]
all of America can be proud of watching Judge Jackson sit at this
[262]
very table.
[265]
Displaying poise, grace, courage and brilliance, no matter what was
[271]
thrown at her reminds me of the she rose, who showed her she stands
[275]
on.
[277]
From Ida B. Wells to Rosa Parks to Constance Baker Motley, the first
[281]
black woman to argue at the Supreme Court. In the first black woman
[285]
appointed to the federal judiciary. These heroic Americans and Judge
[290]
Jackson remind me of this race. Senators never limit yourself because
[296]
of others limited imagination.
[299]
Never limit others because of your
[302]
Own limited imagination. Lastly, the Congressional Black Caucus,
[307]
often called the conscience of the Congress is calling on all senators
[311]
to dig deep into their hearts and minds to unequivocally stamp out
[316]
any unconscious or conscious bias or Dems discrimination.
[321]
As this process moves forward, CBC stands with Judge Jackson to ensure
[326]
that she will be treated with the dignity and respect she serves.
[330]
Let's change America and confirm her with a bipartisan vote. Thank
