what do you think we should fight for in
[1]
2019 so everybody keeps talking about
[4]
economics you know which I think is the
[6]
I guess people of color we always we
[9]
know that economic oppression is our
[11]
greatest enemy so I'm right there with
[13]
that the the the everyday wage for the
[18]
everyday man is a very big big on my
[21]
list but one thing that I'm you know I
[23]
can be a little bit idealistic one of
[25]
the things that I dream about is I want
[27]
politicians that get into office that
[29]
five for political literacy for the
[32]
average man because I one of the things
[34]
that I keep coming across is when I talk
[38]
to people when I go out and I see people
[39]
is that people really aren't informed
[42]
they don't have the information that's
[43]
why I love this show like when I talk to
[47]
the Young Turks followers shout out to
[50]
the ones who came out to Arizona when I
[52]
was performing and they loved The Young
[54]
Turks because they feel like one guy was
[56]
like I want this newspaper I watched
[58]
this outlet and I watched this and then
[61]
I watched The Young Turks and I just get
[62]
a story and they're like everything else
[64]
has become partisan so I just think that
[67]
one of the things that I really am one
[69]
of the things I like about Alejandra
[71]
Ocasio is that she explains things in a
[74]
way that the average person who is could
[78]
be a maid or could be the flower shop
[81]
owner in the Bronx can understand so
[83]
they feel empowered right they feel like
[85]
they have the information and they can
[86]
make informed decisions and that's why
[88]
they feel so proud that they elected her
[90]
because they felt like they made an
[91]
informed decision but I think that you
[93]
know for me everything is gonna always
[95]
be about economic so she talked about
[97]
real estate getting money out of
[98]
politics to me is such a big a big deal
[100]
because my people and when I say my
[103]
people I'm talking about people in
[104]
marginalized groups that come from
[106]
lower-income neighborhoods we suffer the
[109]
most when it comes to the man cuz that
[112]
we are the epitome of the have-nots so
[115]
really getting that dirty money out of
[116]
there and exposing because that's one of
[119]
the things that I really like about this
[121]
group of progressives that are in there
[123]
not just in here doing a job they're
[125]
exposing the corruption as they go and
[127]
really explaining to people what's been
[130]
happening to them and I
[132]
that that gives people fuel and power to
[135]
really believe that they can have change
[137]
and so for me education is that as at
[141]
the top of the list I was talking to
[144]
someone in Arizona who's telling me
[145]
about books that the schoolbooks that
[148]
they have in a district that are the
[150]
books are like from the 1990s you know
[153]
you want to keep people down you make
[156]
sure that they don't get the information
[157]
that they need they don't know where
[158]
they come from they don't have a sense
[160]
of history and I'd like to see I'd like
[163]
to see more women in politics because I
[166]
think women are fair and just not all of
[170]
them yeah well it's certainly true
[173]
there's certainly a variety but they
[176]
have been doing exceedingly well and
[178]
wonderfully progressive lately and I
[179]
wanted to talk about that in a second
[181]
too but you mentioned a couple things
[184]
that I wanted to touch on so rosario
[187]
Dawson was supposed to join no michi
[188]
there and she was there we just couldn't
[190]
get to her in time and and it it if you
[193]
notice know me said why she came out
[195]
because she grew up in an area that I
[199]
just talking about and Noemi mentioned
[201]
and she was poor growing up and what's
[204]
great about rosario is she didn't forget
[208]
that's right right and a lot of people
[209]
would get up and then then they want to
[211]
burn the bridge behind him look at you
[213]
before exam perfect example the guy who
[214]
stood up for the Saudis just over the
[219]
last couple of days was Paul Ryan he
[221]
wanted to keep the war going in Yemen
[223]
and he found a way to defeat Rokon and
[226]
Roe Roe Connors per proposal in the
[229]
house to end the war our at least our
[231]
support for the war and he his father
[235]
passed away and when he did his family
[238]
got Social Security and it allowed him
[241]
to go to college it allowed him to eat
[243]
live go to college in a sense it saved
[246]
his life okay and so what he do
[249]
afterwards he said oh good thanks I
[252]
appreciate it I'll take this bridge now
[255]
and I'll throw it overboard that's right
[256]
and and whatever helped me I'm gonna
[260]
burn to the ground so he gave a two
[262]
trillion dollar tax out to the rich
[263]
along with Donald Trump he also helped
[265]
Bush get his tax cuts etc and then when
[268]
they asked him well how are you gonna
[269]
make it up there's down two trillion
[270]
dollar hole in the deficit he said
[272]
entitlement reform we have to reform
[275]
Social Security and Medicare the same
[277]
social security that saved his life he
[279]
now wants to reform reform means cut you
[283]
guys paid into it your whole life he's
[284]
gonna cut it
[285]
so there's wonderful heroes like a Casa
[287]
Cortez and rosario dawson I don't read a
[291]
minute I see a pattern here
[297]
and women in Congress let me tell you
[300]
why because we come from a Commonwealth
[302]
we come from America's you
[304]
understand we know what it feels like we
[307]
know what it we understand what would it
[309]
mean to be a part of a system that you
[313]
belong to but you really don't belong to
[316]
and and I do agree with those programs
[318]
being reformed but I do believe they
[320]
should be reformed for the benefit of
[322]
the people who need them because there
[324]
there are problems with you know the
[326]
food stamp program and the work to the
[329]
welfare-to-work program because a lot of
[331]
those programs are set up to keep people
[334]
down they're not set up to that you know
[336]
there's nobody in there really giving
[339]
people access to information and
[341]
education so that they can get on their
[342]
feet and yes we can't forget where we
[345]
come from we have to be collective
[347]
thinkers and that's one of the things
[348]
that I admire about Shaquille Shaquille
[351]
O'Neal when there was he voted once for
[355]
the Democratic Party when he was here
[357]
with the Lakers I forgot which election
[359]
it was he was being interviewed and they
[361]
said hey why did you vote Democrat
[363]
you're a millionaire and he said cuz I'm
[365]
the only millionaire in my family and I
[367]
have to be a collective thinker and when
[369]
I vote I have to think about my aunt's
[370]
and my uncles in New Orleans who don't
[373]
have what I have and I just think that
[375]
that's what you're saying we we have to
[377]
be collective thinkers because if now
[379]
we're gonna perish you know well I'm not
[382]
sure basketball started with my
[383]
basketball story okay story and that's
[387]
Charles Barkley who taught you something
[389]
about of the exactly the opposite way so
[391]
he was a Republican in the vote
[394]
Republican and his grandma once asked
[395]
hey Charles you know the Republic for
[398]
the rich why do you vote for them and he
[400]
said grandma I am rich okay but then now
[404]
if you notice I said former Republican
[406]
because so then they asked Berkeley so
[408]
why'd you stop being a Republican he
[410]
said I was a Republican until they went
[411]
nuts I hate any I didn't sign up for
[414]
that right he's like look at my selfish
[416]
is the next guy but I just sign up for
[419]
like torture and crazy stuff right and
[421]
Wars on top of wars etc he said no I'm
[424]
out I'm out I in sign up for this if
[426]
Uncle Chuck says you're crazy you crazy
[429]
cuz he stands on the line of crazy daily
[433]
and so and by the way it's fear of
[436]
strong Puerto Rican woman I just spent
[438]
at the Sanders Institute Carmen you
[440]
leaned
[440]
oh yeah she's here she's actually coming
[443]
to LA in January and she might even come
[446]
on the show I can't promise it I don't
[447]
know a little bit she let me tell you
[450]
that when we were sending stuff to
[451]
Puerto Rico the mayor was like text me
[454]
and I'll make sure that the stuff gets
[456]
where it needs to go and she's I texted
[459]
her and she responded yeah she's amazing
[462]
he's amazing and one of her staffers
[466]
told me like because she just gives us
[468]
fiery speech and I'm like oh I want
[470]
around the show and they're like now
[472]
look she sometimes has no filter I'm
[474]
like perfect yes that's good that's tyt
[478]
written all over it right you're right
[481]
man strong Puerto Rican women for the
[483]
wind like that
[484]
I don't know where you guys are storming
[486]
out of the game galloping and and
[489]
leading progressives in this country we
[491]
have won in the Supreme Court so we got
[493]
well that's right Sotomayor yeah geez
[496]
and lord mercy where'd you guys take
[497]
over
[499]
you the white guys are melting on
[502]
Twitter but we are on our way so I never
[505]
put two and two together before okay
[507]
it's a plot that's not the right wing's
[509]
gonna be out of like wait a minute we're
[511]
gonna be on watch live so but but to
[516]
what you said about education so that
[519]
you know like you said there's you kind
[522]
of two four things that you're
[523]
emphasized one is education for
[524]
everybody kids instead of getting the
[526]
right education in the right books
[527]
unfortunate that actually also goes back
[529]
to real estate at the point of not
[531]
making so I remember thinking when I was
[533]
growing up we were I grew up in a nice
[535]
suburb you sponsoring New Jersey and we
[538]
spent a huge amount of money getting
[540]
lights on our stadium in the high school
[542]
because we wanted to be cool like the
[544]
kids down in Texas and play Friday night
[546]
yeah okay and then we go to perth amboy
[549]
which is a minority town and and much
[551]
poorer and and and they had a dirt field
[556]
like they didn't have grass on their
[557]
field okay and we don't get torn up but
[560]
they got torn up every day that's where
[561]
they practice that's where they played
[562]
right and and i ieave lee asked i'm like
[567]
why don't why do we have lights and they
[569]
don't even have grass right what I
[571]
didn't realize back then as a kid is
[573]
because they do it based on your
[574]
district right based on your area and
[577]
and nobody's interested in sharing right
[580]
there's no East Brunswick sharing with
[582]
perth amboy and if we try to make that
[584]
happen they're like no way no way okay
[587]
that's for my kids not for your kids
[589]
yeah and there's something fundamentally
[591]
wrong with that system because it
[593]
obviously reinforces wealth inequality
[595]
so if you live in a really rich town
[598]
your schools are gonna be amazing
[600]
all your facilities are gonna be amazing
[602]
and if you live in a poor town your
[604]
schools are gonna be disastrous and you
[606]
can't afford private schools you don't
[608]
have any choices etc and so but the
[611]
second part is also equally true very
[613]
similar to what Alonso said we gotta
[616]
educate people about the issues yeah and
[618]
so the the example I keep using it is in
[622]
in this last election there's two ballot
[626]
issues they're both raising minimum wage
[627]
in Arkansas and Missouri okay both very
[631]
red states and in fact in Missouri they
[633]
voted out claire mccaskill and put a
[634]
Republican in the Senate and in Arkansas
[639]
they passed raising minimum wage by 62%
[642]
in Missouri by 68% and then they turn
[645]
around and voted for Republicans why cuz
[647]
nobody told them that the Republicans
[649]
are against higher wages and Democrats
[652]
generally speaking or for higher wages
[653]
right all the people who didn't know
[655]
that Obamacare was the Affordable Care
[657]
Act yeah you know my favorite deception
[659]
on that was Mitch McConnell when he was
[661]
running for re-election in Kentucky in
[663]
the last two weeks he ran used all his
[665]
money that he got from his donors to run
[668]
ads saying that he's for kynect which is
[670]
the health care in Kentucky yeah it's
[672]
Obamacare Obamacare in Kentucky and
[676]
Mitch McConnell who try to repeal and
[678]
replace Obamacare 50 times bragged about
[681]
how he was for the Obamacare in Kentucky
[684]
why because they just deceived people
[687]
yeah and a lot of times the Democrats
[689]
don't fight back yeah so people don't
[691]
know I mean get another one of my
[694]
favorite signs of all time in politics
[695]
was when they rile up the tea party and
[698]
they're like oh yeah the bailout of the
[700]
banks is terrible and the Koch brothers
[702]
sent the busses they're like all right
[704]
so how long before we get to Wall Street
[706]
people on the bus say and Koch brothers
[708]
like we're not going to Wall Street okay
[710]
no you're never gonna produce on Wall
[711]
Street you're gonna turn that bus around
[713]
and we're gonna go protest against
[715]
Obamacare and one of the guys held up a
[718]
sign they said get your government hands
[720]
off my Medicare that's crazy
[727]
but they don't know they really don't
[730]
know it's amazing and listen as a
[732]
comedian it's fun to watch but as a
[734]
citizen aside cuz you're like what the
[738]
and the only thing I wanted to say what
[739]
also was we got to take care of our
[741]
homeless people when we use it when you
[743]
talk about real estate right so we have
[746]
a we have people putting notes on our
[748]
doors because we have an open lot in our
[750]
neighborhood and they want to create a
[752]
place for homeless families and my
[754]
neighborhood they're losing their minds
[756]
they're like we don't want this and of
[758]
course I'm voting for it because I'm
[759]
like you want them on the street but
[761]
what I want to say is when we talk about
[763]
these horrible fires because we run
[765]
homeless people into the into the forest
[767]
into the woods and they build these
[769]
encampments in there and then they get
[771]
cold and they set these fires and now
[773]
all these houses burn down it's like
[777]
they said in the Lion King the circle of
[779]
life everything is connected whether you
[781]
want it to be connected or not and if we
[783]
don't take care of our people then the
[786]
planet will take care of us yeah and
[789]
then all of a sudden be incredibly
[791]
lavish mansions burn down yeah right the
[795]
great because fires don't know the
[797]
difference between poor people and rich
[798]
people that's right that fires don't
[800]
have donors they don't know fires come
[804]
for everyone hurricanes come for
[806]
everyone that's right and so I know you
[808]
could you know hire your own fire
[810]
department if you're Kanye and Kim
[812]
Kardashian all right but at some point
[814]
that doesn't work either so we're all in
[816]
this together
