[6]
hello hey john yeah the sponsor聽 of today's video is audioquest聽聽
[12]
click the link in the description box below bye
[20]
are we rolling right yes yeah聽 you can you can finger bang us in
[26]
one of the biggest stories in the聽 streaming world last week was that Qobuz聽聽
[30]
announced that they would聽 now be servicing scandinavia聽聽
[34]
and australia and new zealand the reason people聽 are excited about kobas is because it gives us聽聽
[40]
cd quality streaming across the board so for a聽 library of 70 million songs i think it is now聽聽
[49]
having cd quality is just fantastic聽 because the jump from say 320 to cd quality聽聽
[55]
for me is the most important jump in source聽 quality that you can make as an added bonus around聽聽
[63]
seven percent of those 70 million songs on kobos聽 are available in 24-bit high-res audio now i use聽聽
[72]
kobas at home i use it integrated inside roon聽 alongside tidal i also stream with spotify聽聽
[80]
soundcloud i also have a wall of vinyl as you聽 saw from my last video i love playing records聽聽
[90]
but and this may confound some viewers is聽 that i have another wall that's full of cds聽聽
[97]
so what's up with that so i want to step through聽 10 reasons why i still buy cds and still collect聽聽
[106]
them reason number one is i still get the hands-on聽 experience of physical media reason number two is聽聽
[112]
that in that physical experience i still get聽 a booklet with artwork and liner notes and聽聽
[119]
very often that artwork and liner notes is not聽 available in the extra metadata layer that comes聽聽
[125]
with roon now the vinyl people right now probably聽 going well john you get all that from vinyl and聽聽
[131]
you do but here's the difference so reason聽 number three is that cds are far less likely聽聽
[137]
to get damaged in transit and even if they do it's聽 usually just a dual case that gets broken which is聽聽
[142]
easily replaced reason number four for cds is that聽 they are generally far more affordable than vinyl聽聽
[150]
especially on the second hand market with things聽 that are you know long out of print on vinyl聽聽
[155]
you can get them on cd pretty easily although聽 some some of the more obscure 90s electronica聽聽
[161]
that i like you know the cd copies are聽 almost gone on disc gogs and they're聽聽
[167]
yeah they're going for about 30 euros which is the聽 price of many new vinyl lps so reason number five聽聽
[174]
cds are easier to store than vinyl and that聽 really matters especially when you're moving house聽聽
[182]
for my cd storage i use ikea's gannetby storage聽 towers those are now discontinued reason number聽聽
[189]
six this is a big one for all digital audio聽 enthusiasts but for me you know if we're聽聽
[195]
talking about cds versus vinyl i hate that kind聽 of adversarial attitude but if we're gonna do it聽聽
[202]
there's no surface noise on cds there's just none聽 they're deadly quiet for number seven we come back聽聽
[208]
to a comparison with streaming so if i play a聽 song on any streaming service that streaming聽聽
[215]
service knows that i've played it they can build聽 up a profile of my listening habits which i guess聽聽
[222]
feeds into the algorithms and generates聽 playlists for people that like that kind of thing聽聽
[229]
i'm not so much of a fan of that but if i play a聽 cd at home my cd player is not networked it's not聽聽
[235]
connected to my router no one knows that i'm聽 listening to on cd nobody knows that only me聽聽
[245]
it's private cds are private again another聽 cd advantage over streaming in many cases cds聽聽
[253]
playback gaplessly now a lot of people kind of go聽 what's gapless playback like why is that important聽聽
[261]
so it's for when songs or movements in a symphony聽 are designed to blend seamlessly into one another聽聽
[271]
and you don't want your streamer or your聽 playback system inserting a gap as it makes聽聽
[276]
a transition from one track to the other聽 but many upnp implementations still do this聽聽
[284]
some media players still do this this is called聽 gapped playback because as we move from file a聽聽
[291]
to file b as we're going through the album you get聽 gaps between tracks and with cds we don't get that聽聽
[298]
the technical reason why is that on a cd聽 there's only one track when you see the the聽聽
[305]
track number advance that's read from the table of聽 contents at the very start of the cds data layer聽聽
[312]
so cds are gapless we know that vinyl is gapless聽 even cassettes for gapless streaming and also聽聽
[319]
to a lesser extent portable media players are the聽 sort of the first formats i guess in history that聽聽
[328]
are not gapless in many cases number nine this聽 one should be obvious to most people but it's not聽聽
[334]
so often talked about is that if you buy a cd聽 the artist gets paid according to their original聽聽
[341]
contract and they earn more money than they聽 would do than if you just stream the same album聽聽
[348]
and this is especially true if you're buying stuff聽 from band camp where the artist gets 90 percent聽聽
[356]
of the cd sale price that can be聽 quite a lot of money when they sell聽聽
[364]
a lot of cds and this is why i'm kind of still聽 buying cds because it's sort of in my small聽聽
[371]
way how i can best support the artists that i聽 really like but of course you know i can't have聽聽
[380]
a wall of millions of albums which is what聽 essentially what streaming services like cobbers聽聽
[388]
offer they basically bring the cd store home聽 right because most of its cd quality like 93聽聽
[394]
of its cd quality so imagine having millions of聽 cds in your house no that's just not feasible聽聽
[399]
so the range is more limited in my聽 cd collection than i'm streaming but聽聽
[404]
here comes number 10 and this is a little bit聽 controversial for some people but generally聽聽
[410]
speaking in most cases i am generalizing here聽 but this is generalizing my own experience聽聽
[415]
cds sound a little bit better now that may聽 not be true for you but it's certainly been聽聽
[423]
true for me over the last few years i know聽 srijan at six moons has also found that out聽聽
[428]
recently and i've been crapping on about this so聽 much to michael lavonna at twittering machines聽聽
[432]
that he has finally decided to investigate cd聽 transports and cd players to find out for himself聽聽
[440]
so i would urge you to do likewise i know many聽 of you do find cds sound more satisfactory聽聽
[448]
than streaming so some of you'll be thinking okay聽 old man like i still want to stream you know what聽聽
[453]
the hell is cd's got to do with me but here's the聽 thing that often gets lost is that if you buy a cd聽聽
[459]
you can still rip it to a hard drive and聽 then stream it you can do both so they're聽聽
[466]
not necessarily a mutually exclusive choice all聽 of my cds that i own are ripped to the hard drive聽聽
[473]
that's connected to my roon and plex server so聽 i can access them from anywhere when i'm not聽聽
[480]
at home or not in the mood to play a cd because聽 i'm not always in the mood to play cd sometimes聽聽
[484]
i just want to stream things because it's quicker聽 and easier but sometimes i kind of want the sort聽聽
[487]
of the deluxe experience you know go and pull聽 a cd off the shelf and put it in the tray and i聽聽
[493]
push play and i'm sitting there it's just me聽 and the music and no one else knows about it
[502]
yeah not a lot of tea
[506]
