[0]
here was just one of the charges
[2]
the judge mr weisselberg it is alleged
[5]
that you together with the trump
[7]
corporation engaged in a scheme
[9]
constituting a systematic ongoing course
[11]
of conduct with intent to defraud more
[13]
than one person and to obtain property
[15]
from more than one person by false and
[17]
fraudulent pretenses representations and
[20]
promises
[21]
and so obtain property with a value in
[23]
excess of one thousand dollars from one
[25]
or more such persons specifically the
[27]
united states internal revenue service
[29]
the new york state department of
[30]
taxation and finance and the new york
[32]
city department of finance is that true
[35]
the defendant
[36]
yes your honor
[38]
donald trump's longest serving employee
[40]
allen weisselberg walked into a new york
[42]
courtroom today and pleaded guilty again
[45]
and again and again to committing fraud
[47]
together with the trump corporation the
[50]
judge literally used the phrase together
[52]
with the trump corporation over and over
[54]
today while reading the charges against
[56]
alan weiselberg
[58]
weisselberg ended up pleading guilty to
[60]
15 felonies 15
[63]
all relating to fraud and tax evasion
[65]
that occurred at the former president's
[66]
business he set to serve anywhere
[68]
between 100 days and five months in
[71]
prison at new york's notorious jail on
[73]
rikers island
[75]
a lot of the media attention on this
[77]
case is focused on the fact that alan
[78]
weiselberg did not agree to testify
[81]
against trump himself as part of his
[82]
plea agreement with the government
[84]
but weisselberg did agree to testify
[86]
against the trump organization and that
[89]
is important because it means that
[90]
prosecutors will get to ask alan
[93]
weiselberg about the crimes he committed
[95]
at the trump organization they will be
[97]
able to ask him under oath who are the
[99]
others involved in the criminal
[100]
conspiracy that weisselberg has just
[102]
pleaded guilty to taking part in
[104]
and we do know that there are only a
[106]
handful of people who could have been
[108]
involved in that conspiracy because
[111]
countless reports over the past few
[112]
years have revealed that the trump
[114]
organization isn't a place
[116]
where decisions are made without sign
[118]
off from someone with the last name
[120]
trump and craig thank you for joining me
[122]
thank you
[123]
so let's just first start with the sort
[125]
of thing everybody's trying to parse
[126]
today which is how meaningful is the
[128]
difference between testifying against
[130]
the trump organization and testifying
[132]
against trump it seems to be meaningful
[134]
enough that this is like the whole thing
[135]
allen weisselberg's deal is predicated
[137]
pretty meaningful but people are saying
[139]
well how can he do that and not testify
[141]
against trump you know donald trump i've
[143]
covered him for a number of years his
[144]
finances he he up until the time he was
[147]
in the white house he was still signing
[148]
every check like he is so intertwined
[151]
that how can testifying against the
[154]
trump organization not be testifying
[156]
against donald trump
[158]
we're not really going to know how that
[159]
goes until october if it does go to
[161]
trial and it doesn't settle i imagine
[163]
what it's going to go is donald yeah
[165]
donald trump was all for these perks and
[167]
you know said take a car and you can
[170]
have one for your wife these are some of
[171]
the things that alan weiselberg was
[173]
accused and pleaded in court today about
[175]
doing
[177]
but did donald trump know is the
[179]
question maybe donald trump said do this
[181]
and assumed
[183]
that the taxes were going to be paid on
[185]
them because all of these things are
[187]
fine to get for employees but the
[189]
problem is is when they're not reported
[191]
to the irs as compensation so i think
[193]
that if i'm imagining how that's going
[195]
to go it's going to it's going to be a
[197]
case of he didn't know and there's no
[199]
paper trail that probably shows that he
[201]
did know i mean it would seem that would
[203]
seem to be the suggestion by the mere
[205]
fact that alan weisselberg accepted this
[207]
deal or created this deal it seems hard
[209]
to believe but in order to bring a case
[211]
against donald trump you have to show
[214]
the criminal intent and if he's not
[216]
willing to testify and say the boss knew
[219]
then he is going to say you know it's
[221]
kind of an i alone did it and there may
[222]
be a few other people that he mentions
[224]
but he's going to say i was responsible
[226]
and it was my fault and then that's
[229]
going to hit the trump organization
[231]
pretty hard if it goes to trial and a
[233]
jury is going to hear that
[235]
but that's that's sort of where i kind
[236]
of see it coming down if it goes if it
[238]
goes to trial in october what of the
[241]
trump organization i mean how secure is
[243]
its financial position at this point can
[245]
it weather this next chapter
[248]
well it's hard to say i mean they have
[249]
they
[252]
from what we've seen in their taxes and
[253]
that was up until 2008 most of their
[256]
businesses do not make money and they've
[258]
had some hard years since then they've
[260]
had covet and january 6 a number of
[262]
businesses walked away from them one of
[264]
donald trump's big money makers heading
[266]
into the white house was these one-off
[268]
licensing deals where he would get a
[270]
couple million here and there to put his
[271]
name on a hotel all those things
[274]
you know have hurt them and in addition
[276]
we've seen them sell
[278]
some at least one really big asset which
[280]
is one of his crown jewels the old post
[282]
office i don't think people do that
[284]
unless they need money and he did that
[287]
so we don't quite know exactly how much
[289]
cash they are sitting on but these
[290]
things hurt you know he he's potentially
[292]
in new york state looking at a civil
[295]
fine that could be substantial you know
[297]
in tens tens of millions it could go up
[299]
into the high close to 100 we don't know
[302]
that fine whatever he's facing there
[304]
whether he goes to trial if he is hit
[306]
with a fine that's not tax deductible
[308]
he's looking at us you know when you go
[310]
to court in the in the criminal case
[312]
they're not going to put an individual
[314]
in jail because it's a corporation
[316]
that's going to be another fine it could
[317]
be substantial he's going to start
[319]
writing some potentially big checks if
[322]
these things you know don't go his way
[324]
and he's in the habit of having other
[325]
people check write checks for him right
[327]
like the rnc is paying all of his legal
[329]
bills now it's time that donald trump
[330]
may in fact have to pony up himself yeah
[332]
and you're gonna i think see you know
[333]
you could see additional headlines where
[335]
potentially more assets are sold as this
[337]
continues to go not just the fines are
[339]
adding up but the businesses you know
[341]
historically
[343]
they just they're not making money and
[344]
he's got a few things that make money
[346]
and that help them that helps them out
[347]
but you know this is this is not sort of
[350]
a great news headline for
[352]
for them
[353]
you know you reported back in 2020 about
[355]
uh trump's audits i mean he was always
[357]
saying i can't release my tax returns
[359]
because i'm under awe is he still under
[361]
audit
[362]
he was under audit um we don't know if
[364]
he still is but that audit is very
[366]
serious and if it goes against him we
[368]
don't know the outcome if there has been
[370]
one that's a potentially another hundred
[372]
million plus dollars that he's going to
[374]
have to to repay the irs it's there's a
[377]
lot of things brewing in the background
[379]
financially that are problematic and you
[382]
see you pop up he doesn't talk about his
[384]
businesses very often occasionally it
[385]
pops up for example he hosted the live
[388]
golf tournament very controversial
[390]
i'm sure that brought in a lot of money
[393]
so there are things coming in they're
[394]
one off that you see he's out there and
[396]
he's you know some money is coming in
[399]
but um but there's a lot of storm clouds
[401]
out there for his finances well and if
[403]
he's convicted of anything on the other
[405]
legal fronts then all of his lenders can
[407]
call in their debts too we don't know
[409]
the covenants of the loan but that's
[411]
something called it's called collateral
[412]
damage and a lot of loans have terms in
[415]
there we don't know if his do but they
[417]
say if you're convicted immediately you
[419]
have to pay the money back so that's
[421]
another view so they might you one would
[423]
think that actually the money problems
[425]
are the thing that is probably most
[426]
deeply affecting you right now or the
[428]
threat of money problems but i gotta ask
[430]
you as someone who's followed the sort
[432]
of ins and outs the trials and
[433]
tribulations of the trump organization
[435]
and its associated conciliaries
[437]
allen weisselberg is going to rikers
[440]
island right riker this week
[443]
a doctor was found dead in rikers island
[445]
um
[447]
like
[448]
killed in in the jail the correction
[450]
department captain stabbed in the neck
[452]
at the rikers island complex this is not
[454]
club fed this is not a cushy uh no
[458]
that's on the one end and then you've
[459]
just got to think coved you know right i
[462]
mean it's just there's a lot of serious
[464]
are you surprised that he's going to
[466]
jail for trump effectively
[469]
i think it's a pretty good deal for him
[471]
i think only you know when i think about
[472]
sort of the calculation he made
[475]
did he want to go to trial and face that
[477]
and just have it continue to linger or
[479]
could he get this deal and then with
[481]
good behavior he'll be out in in a 100
[483]
days
[484]
and he's going to have probably a lot of
[486]
protection inside i mean i'm sure there
[488]
was a lot of soul searching that went
[490]
down on this um
[493]
but you know i guess i'm more just
[495]
surprised we're at this juncture than i
[496]
am that he's going to
[498]
guys that is probably the reason i woke
[500]
up and i i really shouldn't be surprised
[503]
at anything but you know it gives me
[504]
some energy yes well when sue craig is
[507]
surprised we should all be surprised
[509]
thank you so much for joining me
