the science of vaccinology
[3]
together with the tools of public health
[6]
are the thing that is going to get us
[8]
out of this this will
[9]
end this is not something that's going
[12]
to be with us forever
[13]
all right tell me
[17]
[Music]
[27]
researchers and scientists with the
[29]
support of the us government
[31]
are racing against the clock to develop
[33]
a vaccine against the novel coronavirus
[36]
my name is dr anthony fauci and i'm the
[38]
director of the national institute of
[40]
allergy and infectious diseases
[42]
at the national institutes of health in
[45]
the department of health and human
[46]
services
[47]
what we have here with the coronavirus
[50]
is a virus
[51]
that's new that is highly highly
[54]
efficient
[55]
in spreading from human to human and
[57]
asic relatively speaking
[59]
a considerable degree of morbidity and
[62]
mortality
[62]
you put all those things together and
[65]
that's the perfect storm
[67]
how would a vaccine protect us from the
[69]
novel coronavirus
[72]
the virus that causes covet 19 known as
[74]
sars cov2
[76]
is made up of an outer lipid envelope
[78]
inside of which is coiled
[80]
a single rna strand once the virus
[82]
enters the body its outer protein spikes
[85]
attach themselves to receptors on cells
[88]
in the lungs
[89]
the spikes allow the rna strand to slip
[91]
into healthy cells and reproduce
[94]
killing the healthy cell and spewing out
[96]
multiple new versions of the virus
[98]
the host's immune system reacts by
[101]
creating specific antibodies
[103]
and by activating immunity cells to
[105]
fight the virus
[106]
a covet 19 vaccine would provide a
[108]
protective shield
[110]
by stimulating immune response ahead of
[112]
any exposure to the virus
[115]
one of the great triumphs of medical
[117]
science
[118]
and dealing with infectious diseases has
[121]
been vaccinations
[122]
it has saved hundreds and hundreds and
[125]
hundreds of millions
[127]
of people's lives now you have smallpox
[129]
eradicated polio eliminated
[131]
measles in many countries eliminated
[134]
rubella
[135]
mumps hepatitis meningitis all those
[138]
things
[139]
how do scientists develop a new vaccine
[143]
to develop a vaccine typically research
[145]
sponsors begin by selecting a
[147]
methodology and developing a candidate
[149]
through lab research and selective
[151]
humane testing on animals
[154]
with approval from the u.s food and drug
[156]
administration clinical trials in humans
[158]
can begin
[160]
phase one of clinical trials assesses
[162]
the safety of the vaccine in a small
[164]
group of volunteers
[166]
phase two assesses both safety and
[168]
efficacy of the vaccine
[170]
and a slightly larger study group and
[172]
then phase three
[173]
which is a very large trial assesses
[176]
efficacy in a large population of
[178]
subjects against control groups
[180]
in the case of the covet 19 phase three
[183]
trials we're running actually larger
[185]
trial than usual we have
[186]
thirty thousand subjects per trial amman
[189]
sev slowly
[190]
chief scientific advisor to operation
[192]
warf's people when the trials will be
[194]
completed then the fda will look at the
[196]
data and assess
[198]
whether the vaccines are efficacious and
[200]
whether they're safe
[201]
i'm dr stephen hahn the commissioner at
[203]
the food and drug administration
[205]
we have the gold standard of safety and
[207]
effectiveness
[208]
for all medical products the fda along
[211]
with all of our sponsors
[213]
have top of mind ace the safety of a
[215]
vaccine
[216]
we will not cut corners in terms of our
[219]
assessment of fda
[221]
of that gold standard of safety and
[223]
effectiveness
[225]
how long could it take to develop a
[227]
covet 19 vaccine
[229]
vaccine development can take years but
[231]
there's no set timeline
[233]
in the case of sars cov2 scientists have
[236]
a jump on it
[237]
so is operational processes that take
[241]
years and compress it in two months and
[243]
the way we do that
[245]
is by running different processes in
[247]
parallel
[248]
rather than sequentially so for instance
[251]
we ramp up manufacturing of the vaccines
[254]
while we're running the phase 3 trials
[256]
before we know whether the vaccines are
[258]
efficacious or not
[260]
if they turn out to be efficacious and
[262]
the fda approves them
[263]
we will use them if they are not
[265]
efficacious
[266]
then we won't use them simultaneously we
[269]
work with dod on needed supplies
[272]
so that when a vaccine is ready we can
[274]
administer it widely
[275]
i'm dr robert cadlick i'm the assistant
[278]
secretary for preparedness and response
[279]
at the department of health and human
[281]
services
[282]
the fda can give emergency use
[283]
authorization or licensure
[285]
for promising candidates from what we
[288]
know about the initial findings
[290]
we are cautiously optimistic that we
[292]
will be able to have a vaccine available
[295]
by the end of the calendar year 2020 and
[298]
the beginning of 2021.
[301]
what types of vaccines are scientists
[302]
developing
[304]
operation warp speed has invested in a
[306]
number of
[308]
vaccine platform technology such as for
[310]
instance
[311]
the novel rna platform technology
[314]
but also a more established technology
[316]
such as protein-based vaccine
[318]
sponsors of vaccines including the us
[320]
government are looking at a variety of
[322]
different platforms and i'll use a
[324]
sports analogy this is like taking
[326]
multiple shots on goal
[327]
we're coming from different directions
[329]
to attack the virus
[331]
hopefully several of them will be
[333]
effective
[335]
what are some of the reasons for
[336]
optimism the overwhelming majority of
[339]
people who get infected with this virus
[342]
do well and recover in other words their
[345]
body
[346]
has made an immune response that's
[348]
adequate enough
[349]
to suppress the virus and eliminate it
[351]
from their body
[353]
that gives us optimism to feel that a
[356]
vaccine
[357]
will induce the kind of response that
[359]
would mimic that
[360]
and so protect us we're marshaling the
[363]
breadth and depth of scientific
[364]
resources to find the safest
[367]
and most effective vaccine i am
[369]
confident
[370]
fda has the scientific expertise to make
[373]
the right decision for the american
[375]
people
[375]
we are laser focused on the science of
[377]
vaccines
