Channel: Travis Sickle

[0]
today we're gonna be talking about
[1]
filling out the w-4 today we're gonna
[3]
focus on the single tax filer who has
[6]
one job and has no dependents my name is
[10]
Travis Sickle CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER
[11]

[13]
Okay before we get started it's
[23]
important to note that this video for
[25]
the w-4 is specifically for the single
[28]
taxpayer who has no dependents so you're
[30]
not taking care of any children you
[33]
don't have any dependents such as
[34]
parents living with you or grandparents
[36]
or other family members nobody depends
[39]
on you financially also you're also not
[42]
a dependent of anybody else so even if
[45]
you're living at home as long as mom and
[47]
dad aren't supporting you financially
[50]
then this video is gonna be for you so
[53]
if they're not claiming you as a
[54]
dependent and you're still on your own
[56]
maybe you're paying rent then this video
[59]
is gonna help you fill out the w-4 okay
[62]
this is the w-4 form and we'll put a
[65]
link down at the bottom if you don't
[67]
already have one this is the 2017
[69]
version and you can still use it even
[71]
though it's 2018 the IRS has said that
[74]
they'll make it so any of the employers
[77]
that have the W for 2017 version on file
[80]
will be able to convert that into the
[83]
2018 version right up here you can see
[85]
the purpose of the w-4 and it's to
[87]
complete the w-4 so that your employer
[89]
can withhold the correct federal income
[92]
tax from your pay so this is going to
[95]
effect each and every single paycheck
[96]
that you receive and you're gonna see
[98]
withholdings come out of those checks
[100]
primarily today's focus is going to
[102]
focus on this middle section right here
[104]
on page one and it's gonna be the
[106]
personal allowances worksheet we're
[108]
going to go ahead and jump right in to
[110]
line a answer one for yourself if no one
[113]
else can claim you as a dependent so
[116]
you're gonna put a one here again this
[117]
video is for those who are single again
[121]
the w-4 that we're filling out today is
[123]
for a single with no dependents on line
[127]
B enter one if any of these apply so
[130]
you're single AB
[132]
only one job so we're gonna go ahead and
[134]
put a 1 because we know that this first
[136]
one is going to be true in this instance
[139]
if you're married have only one job or
[142]
your spouse doesn't work again we're
[144]
filing this for an individual so if
[146]
you're married this video isn't for you
[148]
and if your wages from a second job a
[151]
second job is going to change it
[153]
slightly so we want to make sure that
[156]
you only have one job in this scenario
[158]
but since this first one is true we're
[160]
gonna go put a 1 right in line be online
[164]
see enter one for your spouse so you
[167]
could stop right there because in this
[169]
instance you're single so we're gonna
[170]
put a zero line D enter number of
[174]
dependents you won't have any dependents
[177]
if you're filling out this online D
[181]
enter number of dependents you will
[183]
claim on your tax return in this
[185]
instance we don't have any dependents so
[187]
we're going to go ahead and put another
[188]
zero on line e enter one if you'll file
[192]
as head of household on your tax return
[195]
now head of household the definition is
[198]
right up here I'm gonna highlight it for
[199]
you
[200]
head of household generally you can
[202]
claim head of household filing status on
[205]
your tax return only if you are
[207]
unmarried and pay more than 50% of the
[211]
cost of keeping up a home for yourself
[213]
and your dependents so it's that that
[216]
dependent portion is really important to
[219]
understand that's what the difference
[220]
between an individual and head of
[223]
household is is whether or not you have
[225]
dependents and in this case we don't
[227]
have any dependents so for e we're gonna
[230]
put a zero on line F enter one if you
[235]
have at least two thousand of child or
[238]
dependent care expenses for what you can
[240]
claim as a credit you'll put a zero
[243]
there because in this case we don't have
[244]
any dependents you're not gonna have any
[246]
children that you're financially
[248]
responsible for line G is for the child
[251]
tax credit so the same thing we're gonna
[254]
go ahead and put a zero for G because we
[257]
don't have any dependents we don't have
[259]
any children that were financially
[260]
responsible for line H add line a
[265]
through G and enter the total here
[267]
that's going to be 2 H is the last line
[271]
item that you're going to fill out as
[273]
far as calculating how much you're going
[276]
to with halt so on the very bottom this
[280]
is going to be the section down here
[283]
that you're going to provide to your
[285]
employer so you're actually gonna cut it
[288]
with a scissor just cut right on this
[291]
dotted line right here so here's where
[294]
you're just gonna put your name right
[295]
here your first name your last name your
[298]
social security number your home address
[300]
and you are single so you're gonna check
[304]
that off and in line 5 total number of
[308]
allowances you are claiming from line h
[311]
above or the applicable worksheet on
[313]
page 2 we're gonna go up to H it says 2
[316]
so on line 5 you're gonna put it two
[319]
down here you're gonna sign you're gonna
[322]
date it you're gonna put your employer's
[324]
name and address and then you're gonna
[326]
put their e a铆 n their tax code if you
[329]
don't know it ask them they'll be able
[331]
to provide it for you there is a page
[333]
too but we're not gonna fill it out in
[336]
this instance because this is only if
[338]
you're gonna itemize that's only if you
[341]
have additional itemized deductions that
[343]
you want to claim so over here you can
[345]
see it says itemized deductions in this
[347]
case we're not going to fill it out and
[349]
on the very bottom here or in the middle
[352]
in the middle here you're gonna see two
[354]
earners multiple jobs worksheet again
[356]
you're filing as an individual so we're
[358]
not gonna fill out the two earners
[360]
multiple jobs worksheet that's all you
[364]
need to do hand in that bottom part and
[366]
that will all that that is all that you
[370]
need to do hand in the bottom of the w-4
[373]
and you are all set the w-4 is designed
[377]
to help you estimate the amount of taxes
[379]
that you're going to owe at the end of
[381]
the year it won't actually affect the
[383]
amount of liability that you have in
[385]
your taxes only the estimation of those
[388]
taxes so you can pay throughout the
[391]
course of the year rather than finding
[393]
out that you have a huge tax liability
[395]
at the
[395]
the year it's also required by the IRS
[397]
in depending on your current filing
[400]
situation if that were to change go
[403]
ahead and refill out the w-4 and of
[405]
course if you get a new job you'll want
[407]
to fill out another w-4 as well if
