[0]
it happened again freshman congresswoman
[3]
Katie Porter did it again she is a
[5]
freshman Democrat House representatives
[7]
who you have met on this program before
[9]
and for the last couple of months
[11]
Washington lobbyists have had fair
[13]
warning of what they have to prepare
[15]
their clients for when their clients
[16]
testified before Katie Porter Jamie
[20]
Dimon is the head of JPMorgan Chase Bank
[22]
he makes 31 million dollars a year he
[24]
pays Washington lobbyists millions and
[26]
millions and millions of dollars to
[27]
handle his lobbying interests in
[29]
Washington and to prepare him
[31]
specifically for things like testifying
[33]
to Congress but lobbyists cannot
[36]
anticipate Katie Porter she represents
[38]
the 45th congressional district in
[40]
California with Irvine as her biggest
[43]
city and so she began her questioning of
[46]
Jamie Dimon this way I went to
[50]
monster.com
[51]
and I found a job in my hometown of
[52]
Irvine at JPMorgan Chase it pays 1650 an
[56]
hour the lobbyists never saw that one
[59]
coming Katey Porter then did the math on
[62]
what that income would be on an annual
[65]
basis and for a hypothetical job
[67]
applicant who is a single mother with
[69]
one child that job would leave her with
[72]
twenty nine thousand one hundred dollars
[74]
a year after taxes Jamie Dimon is no
[77]
doubt good at math but he's not used to
[79]
working with such tiny numbers and so
[81]
Katey Porter laid out what the financial
[84]
life looks like of someone getting an
[87]
entry-level job in the company where
[90]
Jamie Dimon makes 31 million dollars
[95]
she had 24 2425 dollars a month she
[99]
rents a one-bedroom apartment she and
[101]
her daughter sleep together in the same
[102]
room in Irvine California that average
[104]
one that her apartment is gonna be
[105]
$1,600 she spends $100 on utilities take
[110]
away the 1,700 and she has net 725
[112]
dollars
[113]
she's like me she ties a 2008 minivan
[115]
and has gas $400 for car expenses and
[119]
gas net 325 the Department of
[122]
Agriculture says a low-cost food budget
[125]
that is ramen noodles a low food budget
[127]
is $400 that leaves her 77 dollars in
[130]
the red she has a crooked cellphone the
[132]
cheapest cell phone
[133]
she can get for $40 she's in the red 117
[136]
dollars a month she is after school
[138]
child care because the bank is open
[139]
during normal business hours that's 450
[141]
a month that takes her down to negative
[143]
five hundred and sixty seven dollars per
[146]
month my question for you mr. diamond is
[149]
how should she manage this budget
[151]
shortfall while she's working full time
[153]
at your bank and then Jamie Dimon
[156]
deflected the question a bit and then
[158]
his answer finally came down to I don't
[162]
know short 567 what would you suggest
[167]
she do I I don't know I have to think
[169]
about that would you recommend that she
[171]
take out a JPMorgan Chase credit card
[174]
and run a deficit I don't know I'd have
[176]
to think about it would you recommend
[179]
that she overdraft at your bank and be
[182]
charged overdraft fees I don't know I'd
[184]
have to think about it Katey Porter gave
[187]
Jamie Dimon all the time in the world
[189]
and it never occurred to him that maybe
[193]
maybe he could pay that worker an extra
[195]
five hundred and sixty-seven dollars a
[197]
month it never occurred to him that
[200]
maybe he could take five hundred seven
[202]
dollars a month less and income so that
[204]
a struggling worker at the bottom of his
[205]
payroll
[206]
could survive if questions like this
[208]
were on the SATs Jamie Dimon would not
[211]
be sitting where he's sitting today
[212]
Katie Porter was asking a math question
[216]
and a humanity question rolled into one
[219]
and Jamie Dimon and his lobbyists
[221]
flunked Katey Porter persisted until
[225]
Jamie Dimon became speechless she's
[231]
still short 567 dollars as are all of
[235]
your employees in Irvine California
[239]
any ideas okay moving on and we're gonna
[245]
move on to Carson Katey Porter after
[248]
this break
[253]
I'd love to call up and have a
[255]
conversation better financial affairs
[257]
and see if we can be helpful see if you
[259]
can find a way for her to live on less
[261]
than the minimum that I've described
[263]
just be helpful well I appreciate your
[265]
desire to be helpful but what I'd like
[267]
you to do is provide a way for families
[268]
to make ends meet and joining us now
[272]
from Irvine California is congresswoman
[275]
Katey Porter a freshman Democrat
[276]
represents California's 45th district
[279]
and cars wooden Porter I have a feeling
[281]
that if Jamie Dimon called up a worker
[284]
at the bottom of the pay scale at his
[286]
bank making $16.50 an hour and tried to
[291]
discuss how to in how that worker could
[294]
better manage their finances
[296]
I think the workers very very first
[298]
suggestion would be you could pay me
[301]
more absolutely if Chase would do what
[306]
bank of america has done which is commit
[308]
to raising its minimum pay to $20 an
[311]
hour that would entirely erase the
[313]
shortfall and the hypothetical that I
[315]
gave mr. Dimon so the answer was right
[317]
there sitting there for him and he said
[320]
he'd have to think about it he said that
[322]
several times I'd have to think about it
[323]
I hope he is thinking about it in these
[325]
upcoming days and then he makes a change
[327]
that will help the lives of his
[328]
thousands of employees around the
[330]
country you know I couldn't help
[331]
thinking about all the exams that we've
[332]
all gone through and you've gone through
[334]
many more than I have since she went to
[336]
law school Harvard Law School with
[337]
Elizabeth Warren as one of your
[338]
professors you then became a law school
[340]
professor yourself and the answer to
[343]
this question that you were giving him
[345]
was just hanging right out there and it
[348]
it he couldn't find it you simply raised
[351]
that person's pay which was good she's
[354]
completely empowered to do you know I
[357]
mean it's interesting to wonder he's
[358]
obviously a very bright man he's a
[360]
successful CEO he's you know highly
[362]
compensated at 31 million dollars he's
[364]
the head of the Business Roundtable
[366]
which is the BLA being kind of advocacy
[369]
organization for the nation's largest
[370]
businesses you would think that
[372]
investing in his own employees would be
[375]
clear to him as a solution to this
[377]
problem so I have to wonder whether he
[379]
didn't think of it or he simply doesn't
[381]
want to invest in those that are helped
[384]
those
[384]
folks who are helping make it possible
[386]
for JPMorgan Chase to make record
[388]
profits how did you arrive at this line
[390]
of questioning because I have to say if
[392]
I was a lobbyist trying to prepare Jamie
[394]
Dimon I don't think I would have thought
[396]
of this as I've got to preparing for
[398]
this well you know one of the benefits I
[402]
have is I'm new to Congress so I am out
[404]
in the real world I am a normal Simon
[407]
I'm a single mom myself so I go to the
[409]
grocery store I go on Wednesdays when I
[411]
can because it's double coupon day I
[413]
understand what it's like I do Drive a
[415]
2008 minivan just like I posted my
[418]
hypothetical and so I think what we're
[420]
hearing in the from the freshman class
[421]
is a lot of people with real-world
[423]
experiences and real-life experiences
[425]
who are in touch with what it's like to
[427]
be an everyday American and mr. Dimon
[429]
clearly is not in touch with that
[430]
reality cars woman Katey Porter
[432]
representing the real world and the 45th
[435]
district thank you very much for joining
