Unit Fundraising...

[16]
Hey ScouterStan... I want to talk about
[18]
fundraising. Fundraising is a critical part of
[22]
supporting your program. Without the funds
[26]
you can't have any program. Also recharters, coming up. You have to pay for
[31]
your membership as a scout. Now a lot of the
[34]
membership goes into different things. Some of that being insurance, so it's
[38]
important. That we're responsible and make sure
[42]
that we recharter and every year. Guess what?...
[48]
It's going to go up. It's that's just what goes on... So
[55]
expect that... So budget has to be supported by fundraising,
[60]
and there's a lot of different ways. We need fundraising
[64]
with scouts. I've actually had leaders come up and tell me... "That
[71]
they couldn't get parents involved in scouting other than to write
[77]
a check." They could not get them going. That's
[81]
not the way it should be. Everyone should be involved
[84]
in the fundraising. Fundraising is important for
[89]
the scout. The scout needs to learn the meaning of thrifty. How other people
[96]
are thrifty. How they wisely choose the products that
[100]
they sell and that money is used directly for
[105]
their benefit to their program. So we need to teach that, so
[110]
that's the important part of fundraising. Now special note here... I am
[118]
not an accountant, and I'm not a lawyer. So I'm going to use
[121]
terms that they like to use. That's so we could talk about it. Okay...
[127]
If you have questions, make sure that you consult a
[130]
professional. You might even have some parents that could help in that
[135]
respect. Definitely check into it, if you have
[139]
questions or need clarification thanks.... Basically, there are
[146]
three types of fundraising. In a local unit you have been exposed
[153]
to council level or even regional, that is
[160]
something that they do to help out with units in fundraising. You know that
[167]
we sell Trail's End Popcorn and a lot of
[171]
councils will also do camp cards. These are wonderful things that help us
[178]
go out and raise money. Now one of the major differences
[182]
between the other two of the three... Is that they front all of the money.
[189]
You'd be amazed how expensive it is to ship popcorn all over
[194]
the country. It is expensive and
[198]
they front the money for all of that. They're a partner
[202]
of that fundraising. In addition to that
[206]
the unit... And the... Well whenever I say scout or unit, they are
[212]
kind of together. And that's very
[216]
important to understand. With that, there's a three-way split. The
[221]
first is the scout. They usually get the lion's
[225]
share. They get the biggest percentage. Then of
[228]
course the council needs to be reimbursed for all of their
[232]
expenses... And then you have the vendor of course
[236]
they have the actual manufacturing of the product. That's
[240]
kind of the process. It's a three-way split.
[245]
As far as everything is concerned. The next big fundraising thing is
[251]
done at the unit level. The unit does a fundraiser for a special event like...
[257]
They want to lower the cost of going to camp or they
[261]
want to go on a special trip or high adventure or something of that
[265]
nature. They may do a separate unit
[270]
fundraiser and this... You know what it is... it's usually
[273]
chocolate or beef sticks or something of that nature and there's
[280]
many different ideas. My troop, when I was growing up... We sold
[283]
christmas trees. That was a big fundraiser and a lot of
[287]
units still do. That being the case...
[291]
The unit can make a lot of funds for their program. Their program can
[298]
greatly improve, if they have these funds. The unit
[303]
actually splits it up. Now of course they have their vendors
[306]
that they have to deal with and then they have the scout
[310]
and or the unit. So it could be for one or the other.
[313]
That's really the second type of fundraising that's out there.
[318]
The third one is individual scouts. Now that might be a fundraiser for, let's
[325]
say an Eagle Project. Eagle Projects need funding, and there
[330]
may be car washes. There may be the need
[333]
for sales of some kind. There's a lot of
[337]
different ways to raise funds for an Eagle Project. Another big
[342]
thing would be... Mom and Dad....
[347]
You've also got Uncles and Aunts and Nieces and Cousins and all those people
[351]
that are willing to donate towards that
[354]
project. You will also
[359]
have Grants... There's Grants that are available.
[363]
Even the people that are receiving the project
[366]
might actually do some donations. These are things to think about
[370]
when raising funds for an individual project like an Eagle Project.
[376]
That's definitely a doable thing. Now one of the big things
[383]
that I did not mention. All three of these types of
[386]
funding needs certain paperwork. Now the first one, with the council. They usually
[392]
take care of all of that. It's all approved. It's all handled. They do all of
[396]
that paperwork. Scouting in general is a
[401]
non-profit, not-for-profit... The whole thing, so we have to be very
[406]
careful when we're dealing with monies. There's a
[410]
lot of accounting and legal stuff that they
[414]
take care of... With a unit, everything's done at a break
[420]
even. Okay... If you're going to be doing a
[422]
project and you need to raise a thousand dollars.
[425]
That's what it goes too. If there's any surplus that
[430]
goes towards additional program. It doesn't go into anybody's
[434]
pocket... Okay... It goes directly
[438]
to the unit for its budget that's the critical thing.
[443]
And as far as paperwork with the last two... When you're dealing with a unit
[449]
you need to fill out the proper paperwork
[451]
and you need to get approval. Before you do any sales. Before you send off for
[457]
samples... Before you do any of that. Please get the
[461]
approval first from the council office. Go to the
[464]
council office. The service center will help you get the right form
[468]
and see the right people. It's not that hard. It just needs to be done.
[474]
Leaders, don't drop the ball on that. You definitely want to make
[478]
sure that you get approval and all the required
[482]
documents that are needed. The last one, with the
[486]
an individual scout doing a fundraising...
[489]
Eagle Project, per-say... They're in the workbook of the Eagle Project is
[496]
actually the form. It's all... You know, these are things you have to
[501]
get approval on. Before you get the funding.
[505]
Otherwise you may... If you don't get approval, you may have to return
[509]
that funding. Don't even start until you get approval.
[513]
Very important! With all that, I tell you what... It's
[520]
an important job. Being an adult leader in Scouting and we need to guide, and
[526]
enable, and facilitate our youth to do
[530]
fundraising. It's a very important part of all
[533]
of this. When they get out, in the what I call "The
[538]
Real World". They're going to be doing that...
[544]
You know as an adult, that you doing a job, do... Running your career.
[551]
That's fundraising for your family. It follows the scout. They should learn
[558]
these skills. It may be complex, it may be hard.
[563]
But we can help them through it and that's something that you do already. I
[569]
know... I know you do that already. If you
[572]
have some interesting fundraising stories or
[576]
questions please put them in the notes. I'd love to hear about it. I read all
[583]
of the comments that are made on our channel.
[586]
Please join in, feel free. There's a lot of different
[591]
ideas out there. I'd like to hear them all.
[596]
And if you have a question let me know.
[600]
That's one of the wonderful things about scouting. It's a work
[604]
in progress. Always think of it that way... Scouting is a great thing and I thank
[611]
you for being a big part of it... and I will see you on the trail.
