does creating SEO content to build your
[2]
brand and grow your authority online
[4]
sometimes feel like a vortex of same-old
[7]
same-old
[8]
have you ever found yourself wondering
[9]
that I just create too much content on
[12]
the same topic then you'll want to stick
[15]
around for today's video on keyword
[17]
cannibalization
[20]
[Music]
[28]
[Music]
[43]
before we get into it here's my 60
[46]
seconds or less in the life of Julia
[49]
update so this fall I'm working every
[52]
single day writing on my book going
[54]
through the developmental edits I got
[56]
back from my editor this is my third
[58]
book and narrative nonfiction memoir
[60]
which I'm really excited to share with
[62]
you it's a story of how I escaped a cult
[64]
in the middle of the night at 21 and
[67]
built a life that I loved including
[69]
building multiple businesses it's the
[71]
story of that so every day I'm working
[74]
on that book and this fall and express
[76]
writers were full steam ahead we're
[78]
doing lots of amazing concept projects
[80]
for our clients keeping our writers and
[83]
our team busy we have a couple positions
[85]
open they're all work from home
[87]
we need editors and a part-time Support
[89]
Specialist if you want to hear more you
[91]
think you could be a fit email us here
[94]
and I'll get back to you and finally
[96]
even though I said I try to take on less
[98]
I couldn't say no to the invitation to
[102]
co-write a leading experts new book on
[105]
SEO I've been a huge fan of Ryan Stewart
[108]
been following him for years so when he
[110]
asked me to help him co-write this new
[113]
book I said yes he's all about growth
[115]
focused marketing through great SEO and
[118]
great content he's built and sold
[120]
multiple businesses and consults it for
[122]
leading at brands so I'm really excited
[124]
about this project
[125]
and if you wonder how I get so much
[127]
writing done maybe that's another video
[129]
let me know in the comments okay let's
[135]
get into today's topic what exactly is
[138]
keyword cannibalization this is when a
[140]
site has more than one content piece
[142]
targeting the exact same keyword
[144]
typically unintentionally when this
[147]
happens you're diluting your page
[149]
Authority and you're potentially
[151]
accidentally eating the chances of your
[153]
own rankings that's why it's called
[155]
keyword cannibalization so instead of
[158]
you telling Google hey Google here's my
[159]
amazing piece of content I've created
[161]
that's comprehensive it's the best on
[164]
this topic
[164]
you're throwing content at Google hoping
[167]
something sticks that doesn't work Eric
[170]
any one of the lead writers of the art
[172]
of SEO has said that keyword
[174]
cannibalization is
[176]
like writing a really good book but
[178]
every chapter is on the same exact topic
[181]
that's not really a page-turner he has
[184]
this illustration to show how curate
[186]
cannibalization kills site SEO and what
[188]
can be done instead so instead of
[191]
multiple pages on the same exact topic
[194]
you can kind of create a hierarchy a
[196]
menu and link to similar pages the only
[200]
thing I would clarify on this topic is
[202]
that when you're creating tons of
[204]
content on the same keyword you're not
[207]
confusing Google because in the end
[209]
Google picks the content that best
[211]
matches the search users intent so
[214]
Google is making the most informed
[216]
choice from your content on which to
[219]
rank but the negative side effect that
[222]
often happens with cured cannibalization
[224]
is that you often have one key piece of
[229]
content ranking above an awesome piece
[232]
of content
[233]
Joshua Hardwick the lead writer at a
[235]
href San amazing marketer we interviewed
[238]
him on the concert hacker spotlights
[240]
recently he has this example if you
[243]
google the phrase competitor backlink
[245]
analysis you'll see two different blogs
[247]
ranking in physicians number six and
[250]
seven the result in position six is over
[253]
four years old it's around a thousand
[256]
words instead of their typical 2,000
[258]
words the screenshots are outdated of an
[261]
old UI but the one in position seven is
[265]
amazing it's an up-to-date blog with
[267]
current advice but because they've
[269]
already written on this topic twice
[271]
they're cannibalizing their position so
[275]
we're gonna talk about three ways to fix
[277]
it when this happens but first let's
[279]
talk about a scenario when keyword
[281]
cannibalization actually may not hurt
[283]
you
[284]
because as strange as that sounds that
[286]
can happen here's an example from
[289]
bodybuilding.com they rank in the first
[291]
one and two spots or back and bicep
[295]
workouts now if you study these two
[297]
content pieces each feature a different
[300]
workout by a different expert so if
[303]
you're in the ideal audience for this
[305]
site and let's say you already know your
[307]
experts and you'd rather have a word
[309]
from one versus the other you're going
[311]
to click on the one you like the most
[313]
bodybuilding.com is not cannibalizing
[316]
their keyword rankings because each of
[318]
those content pieces serves a purpose
[321]
for their audience another example a
[324]
frequent question I get about Huard
[326]
cannibalization not being an issue is
[328]
when you have one core keyword term that
[331]
you're using over and over in longtail
[334]
keyword versions so for example here's a
[337]
few keywords we've targeted on the right
[339]
blog blogging statistics best blogging
[342]
service blogging packages for law firms
[345]
yes those all contain the word blogging
[348]
but they're not cannibalizing each other
[349]
because we're going after a different
[352]
topic for each keyword focus we have
[356]
different longtail keywords for each of
[358]
those and a unique content piece so
[361]
three different keywords three different
[363]
content pieces you could say targeting
[366]
three different audiences even though
[368]
they all contain the same core term
[370]
that's okay that's not keyword
[372]
cannibalization as long as your content
[375]
is unique in each different piece okay
[381]
so let's say the worst is happening to
[383]
you here cannibalization is occurring
[385]
what do you do to fix it
[387]
there are three ways that I'll share
[388]
with you the first one one of the best
[391]
ones is to merge and update old content
[394]
so if you have those two pieces on the
[396]
identical topic or keyword pick the best
[399]
one merge the content that's good from
[402]
the old post into that new one and make
[404]
that your single focus piece and it's
[407]
always best to have an expert a writer
[409]
and editor go through that piece make
[411]
sure it's flawless its current
[413]
comprehensive you have a new meta title
[416]
meta description so you get the most out
[419]
of it and then don't forget to 301
[421]
redirect the URL of that old piece to
[424]
the new piece and then just delete and
[426]
trash that old one number two straight
[429]
up delete that old version if you have a
[432]
truly a key piece of content just remove
[435]
it from your site but before you do to
[437]
avoid any 404 scenarios just 301
[440]
redirect the link
[442]
to something that's more current and
[444]
relevant and that way you completely
[445]
avoid a scenario where someone's
[447]
clicking on that link somewhere and
[449]
they're ending up on a 404 which is
[451]
really bad you don't want that to happen
[453]
number three I don't recommend this but
[456]
in some scenarios it can work you can no
[459]
index pages that are duplicate in topic
[462]
to each other
[463]
so let's say for example you're an
[465]
e-commerce shop and your audience comes
[468]
from Facebook advertising your source is
[470]
not SEO traffic you might have multiple
[473]
products that kind of mirror each other
[475]
so that's where you can go in and no
[477]
index each page which simply gets those
[479]
pages out of search results now this is
[482]
an ideal because for me I love SEO
[485]
traffic and every piece of content we
[487]
publish we try to earn SEO results but
[491]
that can work in some scenarios and
[493]
finally to wrap up if you're in a place
[496]
where you have a ton of content maybe
[498]
years of publishing content and you're
[500]
not sure what the heck could be cured
[503]
cannibalized versus of what's good use a
[507]
tool like screaming frog to export all
[509]
your site pages put them in Excel and
[512]
then you can see which pages aren't
[515]
duplicate to each other at a glance and
[517]
you can start a very high ROI project of
[521]
content cleanup cleaning up your old
[523]
content fixing these issues merging
[526]
updating rewriting is so critical to
[529]
your site's health in SEO result and
[532]
often times that can be a better place
[534]
to spend your time energy investment
[537]
then creating new content if you have a
[539]
ton of content that really needs to be
[541]
cleaned up be sure to hit that subscribe
[543]
button if you haven't already to catch
[546]
my new videos every single month I hope
[548]
that you enjoyed today's video if you
[550]
have any questions on this pretty crazy
[552]
topic of cured cannibalization let me
[555]
know in the comments and I'll get back
[556]
to you and hit like on this video if you
[559]
were able to learn anything that will
[561]
