Track individual users in GA with the User Explorer Report and User ID feature - YouTube

Channel: MeasureSchool

[0]
in this video we're gonna talk about the
[2]
new user explorer report within Google
[5]
Analytics and I'll show you how you can
[6]
identify individual users see what
[10]
they're doing on your website and give
[12]
you tips on how you can leverage the
[14]
user ID feature to make better sense of
[16]
your data all the more coming up so
[18]
let's dive in hi there and welcome to
[28]
another video of measure school comm
[30]
where we teach you the data-driven way
[32]
of digital marketing all right in this
[37]
video we're gonna talk about this new
[39]
report within Google Analytics which you
[40]
can find under audience and it's called
[43]
the user Explorer pod which came out
[45]
recently
[46]
now this user Explorer report really
[48]
takes care of looking at data in Google
[51]
Analytics on an individual user basis
[53]
most of the data that you see within
[55]
Google Analytics is aggregate data you
[58]
are not able to find a specific user
[61]
where he came from what he did on your
[63]
website and if you convert it with this
[65]
new user Explorer report we have that
[67]
data available and for the first time
[70]
Google Analytics actually shows as the
[73]
client ID by default so a dimension that
[76]
was previously already in Google
[79]
Analytics but not shown to the user is
[81]
now available in this report so here you
[84]
can see the client ID which represents
[86]
one individual user on your website and
[89]
if you click through on one of these you
[92]
can actually see the different
[93]
interactions that he took on your
[95]
website so a view and event if you have
[98]
these installed and also let's go
[101]
further back here purchases or goal
[105]
completions that were achieved on your
[107]
website now this is a great report
[109]
because we can see how many sessions the
[111]
user generated how long he stayed on the
[114]
website and the revenue that he made on
[116]
our site you can also see the
[118]
acquisition Channel and what devices he
[122]
used to come to a website now all this
[125]
is possible because Google Analytics
[126]
sets a cookie when you enter a website
[129]
and gives out randomly generated
[133]
client ID and thus client ID identifies
[135]
the user to Google Analytics and of the
[139]
user leaves the side and comes back with
[142]
the same cookie and the same client ID
[143]
Google Analytics will recognize this and
[145]
continue the user record and all the
[149]
different pageviews events and sessions
[152]
will be attributed to this one user so
[156]
we now have a great view on an
[158]
individual user basis now unfortunately
[161]
this client ID doesn't tell us much we
[164]
could capture the client ID with Google
[167]
tag manager and I explain that in
[168]
another video on custom JavaScript
[171]
variables on how to pick up this
[174]
information and later you could match up
[175]
the client ID with an email address that
[178]
is a new system please be aware that you
[180]
are not allowed to send in any personal
[182]
identifiable information such as the
[184]
email address into Google Analytics
[186]
because that's against the Terms of
[188]
Service and you would be endangered that
[192]
your account would be shut down now this
[194]
is all well and good the client ID is
[196]
visible now within Google Analytics but
[199]
when you're looking at individual users
[201]
the cookie based method is actually not
[204]
very reliable and Google Analytics has a
[207]
second feature in order to authenticate
[210]
to use a to this system in a different
[213]
way which is called the user ID feature
[215]
and I have this enabled on measure
[218]
school so we can take a look at the data
[220]
here where we only see people who are
[224]
actually identified to the system and we
[227]
also have the user Explorer report
[229]
available now this shows my individual
[233]
user ID that I give out by our system
[236]
which means I have a number for every
[239]
user who is registered on measure school
[241]
and once he authenticates
[243]
through a login I will be able to let
[247]
Google Analytics know this is an
[249]
individual user which makes the tracking
[252]
much more reliable on a user level so
[256]
right here we can take a look at this
[258]
individual user and see what he has done
[261]
on our website
[265]
all pretty anonymous data because at
[269]
this point you don't know who this user
[271]
actually is I would need to go into my
[273]
CRM system and look up this user now I
[277]
could see individual steps that he took
[279]
and how long he has been on our website
[282]
if you go back here again there is no
[285]
real way in Google Analytics to see the
[288]
individual user via email address or the
[290]
name but you can match the data up with
[294]
your CRM or your email system you could
[297]
do this offline but there's actually a
[299]
great plugin by David Simpson
[301]
who has built a little chrome plugin
[304]
which is the PII viewer for Google
[307]
Analytics and you can download this in
[309]
the Extension store of Google Chrome now
[312]
with this plugin we can simply connect
[316]
our CRM for example MailChimp or import
[319]
a CSV file I have something prepared
[321]
here so I'll just go ahead and upload
[323]
this and it's a simple CSV where I have
[330]
to use ID and the email address in there
[332]
and the display name and so on and so on
[334]
so the user ID will actually be used as
[337]
a key to match up to the data that we
[340]
have in Google Analytics and if you go
[342]
back here and reload our page every time
[344]
a user ID is shown we will have the name
[348]
of the person beside that we also have a
[350]
little bar down here we can do the real
[353]
mapping so for example I'll go with the
[356]
display name here and we see some
[358]
personal identifiable information
[360]
obviously this is not real data of the
[364]
users on my website and obviously this
[366]
is also not stored within Google
[368]
Analytics itself but on my browser so
[371]
this is a great way to actually match up
[375]
the data that I have available in a CRM
[378]
system or an offline sauce like a CSV
[380]
file to the actual record within Google
[383]
Analytics so if you have that data
[384]
available somewhere offline you can
[386]
build it into your system and see the
[390]
data right next to the record of the
[393]
user this is especially useful when
[395]
thinking about this user Explorer report
[399]
because we now know who this person
[401]
actually is and can see what he has done
[404]
on our website so that's already it with
