today we're in talks how to save money on your electric bill so much is going
[2]
on in the world right now with everyone having to stay home and with that a lot
[7]
of people's electric bills are going higher and higher and higher every day
[11]
that we are stuck at home so today I'm going to talk about how to cut your
[13]
electric bill actual things that you can do right now as you're watching this
[17]
video go around the house collect these items do these things and save some
[21]
money on your electric bill there's so many little hidden things that rack up
[26]
energy and really can increase that bill so I'm gonna give you some actual steps
[30]
that you can do to reduce that the first one is look into off-peak hours call
[35]
your electric company and see if they offer off-peak hours I know Graham
[38]
Steffen is huge in off-peak hours I called my company FPL which I live in
[42]
Florida and honestly I feel does offer off-peak hours but it didn't benefit us
[48]
so really look into it do some math and run some numbers and what off-peak hours
[53]
is in a nutshell is you're using your prime electric usage during off-peak
[60]
hours so a lot of people are running their electricity at night you know on
[64]
the weekends and when they're at home so using off-peak hours is when people
[69]
aren't doing that so a lot of times it's like between like 8 and 10 a.m. during
[72]
the week so you can do all of your laundry during that time or set a timer
[76]
for your dishwasher to run at that time and have those bigger electric items
[80]
running then and they'll give you a discount per wattage per unit of
[86]
measurement that they use for electricity
[88]
Thanks kilowatts whatever it is so look into that and you can really save a lot
[93]
of money this is great for stay-at-home moms this is great for people that are
[96]
home all the time and you can really make sure that you're using the energy
[100]
in that source so do some research about off-peak hours it can really really save
[104]
you a ton of money on your electric bill next is saving money on laundry and how
[109]
laundry can really inflate your budget by for ways to save money on laundry
[113]
first make sure running full loads I know that kids are really bad at you
[119]
know just throwing a couple things especially if they have somewhere to go
[121]
that they'll just do a couple sometimes husbands do this as well mine doesn't do
[127]
that right no but having full load to make sure that you're doing a full load
[131]
of laundry every single time you don't want to have all that water
[135]
wasted all that electricity if you're not only doing a couple items if you're
[139]
going to just do a couple items just hand wash it just do it that way or wait
[143]
until you have other items that you need to do as well second put a towel in the
[147]
dryer I know it sounds crazy but putting a towel in the dryer even if it's
[152]
clothes even if it's wet towels put one dry towel that's gonna help absorb some
[157]
of that moisture and its really gonna cut drying time down also goodbye
[162]
dryer sheets do not use dryer sheets they have so much toxins in them and
[167]
they're just running in the landfill and they cost money I have invested in
[172]
reusable dryer balls we have had the same dryer balls for probably six six
[179]
years now I think it is I have a couple plastic and a couple of wool ones and
[182]
what they do is they really they bounce around though they're a little loud I'll
[185]
be honest but they bounce around that kind of beat out the wrinkles they
[188]
really improve dryer time the wool ones are really great for static and I put a
[193]
couple essential oils on them like once every several months and it kinda just
[198]
freshens up and then the plastic ones those have a little hole that allows
[201]
steam to come out and they steam your clothes as you use them so they cut our
[205]
drawing tag down drastically okay two more things cold water cold water is
[211]
just fine for your clothes the only times that I will use hot water and a
[215]
larger e is for towels and sheets that's it everything else I use cold water guys
[222]
the detergents it's it's fine it's gonna get everything clean it's gonna it's
[226]
gonna be fine really you're gonna save a ton of money on not having to use your
[229]
water heater for your laundry that's going to be a huge and then lastly is
[233]
hang dry your clothes I try to hang Joey the majority of our clothes we have a
[238]
little rack above our washer and dryer that I hang dry those there or I have
[242]
the old-fashioned kind we use that as well and that's gonna help save your
[246]
clothes so that they last longer it's gonna cut down electricity it's really
[250]
gonna maximize it and even if you can pull out like six items from the dryer
[253]
it's gonna cut down the dryer time in total so you don't have to dry and dry
[258]
all of the clothes just dry some of them and then that's going to maximize the
[263]
whole dryer time and cut that down and also you have your dryer balls and you
[267]
have your towel in your dryer so all of that combined it's really gonna cut your
[271]
drying time in like half which is amazing coasters they can be expensive
[274]
next tip is that you don't always need the light on and this may seem like
[278]
common sense but we ended such a habit of you walk in a room and you turn on
[282]
the light right and then you walk out and you're shutoff supposed to be mm-hmm
[286]
not always but it really does make a difference especially during the day
[290]
during the day guys there's sunlight you don't need a light I went to take a
[293]
shower the other morning and I'd have it I went to turn on the light and that was
[297]
like Kelly it is plenty bright in here we have a big frosted window in our
[301]
bathroom so there's no peeping toms but I would take shower and I was like
[305]
there's plenty of light I don't need the light on right now so break that habit
[308]
of always when you walk in a room turn on a light no that is not necessary
[313]
especially during the day natural sunlight it's beautiful outside so get
[317]
in that habit of really thinking twice do I needs a light on yes no and then
[321]
also make sure you get in the habit of shutting the light off when you leave
[324]
that is huge guys that is huge especially if you have kids or husbands
[329]
that don't do that shut the lights off next is phantom power and this one this
[334]
is a doozy guys phantom power can increase your electric bill by up to 10%
[338]
which is crazy there's so many times that we have things plugged in and then
[343]
we're like oh it's off it's totally fine right no even if it's off it's still
[347]
gonna be drunk power with it being plugged in so make sure that you're
[350]
unplugging those items a great way to do it is have a power strip that way you
[355]
can plug in everything and whine a power strip and then just unplug the whole
[358]
strip and then when you're ready to use the items you can just plug them back in
[361]
for me I have all of these lights and everything for my setup I have a monitor
[366]
and all of this and I have everything in a power strip so that when I'm done
[369]
filming I can just unplug the strip the power strip and then when I'm ready to
[373]
film I just plug it back in and it's all there it's all ready to go for me and
[376]
it's not trying useless power right now when I'm working from home and we have a
[381]
desktop computer for my job I have a laptop for a YouTube a MacBook then I
[386]
have at my desktop for my work so I'm making sure that I'm fully shutting that
[390]
down every single night and unplugging it so that it's not drying it a lot of
[394]
power desktops hope they draw so much power it is crazy
[399]
I've noticed that I'm watching our electric bill and with us being home
[403]
it's crazy how much higher it goes and so we're having to be very resourceful
[408]
and take in these you know tips for ourselves to make sure that we're lowing
[413]
that because we don't want our electric bill to double which it can in this time
[417]
of quarantine guys it can it can double fast so be very aware of phantom power
[422]
especially when you're going on trips and vacation and you're not home like
[426]
unplug things like their microwave and all these random big appliances those
[430]
are gonna draw in a lot of power you obviously want to keep your refrigerator
[433]
your freezer plugged in because you don't have food to spoil but those other
[437]
electronics your TV your computer your everything like that that can all be
[442]
unplugged and that's gonna save up to 10% on your power bill if you're finding
[446]
value in this I would love for you to like the video it really helps with the
[449]
YouTube algorithm and pushes it out and just tells you too that you like this
[453]
stuff so like the video subscribe I would love for you to join the freedom
[457]
and a budget family I pull out lots of videos like this on saving money growing
[461]
your income and investing so join the freedom in a budget family hit that Bell
[465]
notification so that you're notified of all of my upcoming videos twice a week
[469]
now and typically a blog post for every single video as well next we're gonna
[472]
talk about upgrades that can save money in the long run so there are some things
[476]
that you invest in upfront and then over time will save money so one of them
[482]
being a nest thermostat or an echo key we have an echo B we bought it when we
[486]
bought the house here and it takes about two years to recoup your costs but it
[490]
can save around 130 dollars a year on just programming your your AC and your
[496]
heat which is crazy there have been so many times where before in our apartment
[500]
I forgot to turn the AC down before we turn it up because we live in Florida
[505]
turn it up before we left the house and then I would come home and it would be
[509]
freezing cold like crap that a/c just ran for 12 hours oh my gosh so expensive
[516]
so now with our echo B we can program it so that as soon as we leave the house it
[521]
goes up as soon as we come home it goes down and then at
[525]
it has a different temperature you can program it so that when the last person
[529]
leaves it goes on in certain temperatures so even if like it's
[532]
programmed for daytime when we're leaving for a work schedule if we're
[536]
leaving on the weekend or for on vacation it automatically knows if we're
[539]
not connected to Wi-Fi if we're not connected to the home app it's gonna
[543]
turn the air up so that it saves us money which is amazing
[547]
another thing is LED bulbs LED bulbs guys there are a game changer I have
[552]
some we have LEDs all over this house and don't think we have any old school
[556]
lights anymore but they they really save a lot of money and same thing with the
[561]
bulbs is we can program them in our home app through our Apple TV and when we're
[566]
leaving they go off when we come home they come on and it really helps to
[571]
minimize lights getting left on because there have been times where we come home
[577]
and lights been left on all day long just it gives you some perspective on
[580]
LED bulbs and how much they saved an old-school light bulb is about 60 watts
[584]
can be replaced with a 9 watt LED bulb so 60 watts compared to 9 watts that's
[589]
what the savings that's gonna be on your electric bill that is HUGE guys and then
[592]
lastly is Energy Star appliances make sure that you're buying appliances that
[596]
have the Energy Star or if you're upgrading your appliances like your
[600]
washer dies your refrigerator dies your dishwasher or any of those appliances
[603]
they die when you do replace them make sure that you're getting the Energy Star
[607]
appliances where our washer is on the fritz right now so it's actually looking
[612]
at washers this morning and I was surprised at how many washers still
[616]
aren't Energy Star certified like it was crazy I thought that was just a thing
[620]
across the board now but it's really not so make sure that you're specifically
[623]
looking for that so that you're saving as much money as possible when you are
[627]
running in this next one it is an easy fix and that is making sure that you're
[631]
changing your air filter especially if you're living in Florida if you have
[635]
pets if it's pollen season if it's high humidity anything like that switch in
[639]
the summer months make sure you're changing your air filter that's going to
[642]
help improve the efficiency of the machine so that it costs less when it
[646]
runs and it's going to help with just the air and the pot of the particles
[652]
whoo my boss and just came out the particles in the air make sure they are
[655]
breathing clean air the the air filter really does make such a difference I've
[660]
noticed that when we don't the next month after we change it our electric
[664]
will actually does go down from that which is so cool this next one is a
[668]
really easy one you can go and do it while you're watching this video is
[670]
adjust the temperature on your refrigerator so a lot of times that we
[675]
have a refrigerator in freezers way colder than what is recommended and what
[679]
is necessary so recommended is 40 degrees Fahrenheit for your refrigerator
[684]
and zero degrees Fahrenheit for your fries or anything below that you can
[689]
bump it up anything above that you want to bring it down to make sure they are
[693]
40 and zero because if you are above 40 then you can have food spoilage and it
[698]
or your food is going to spoil faster than it would at 40 degrees so make sure
[702]
you're at 40 degrees Fahrenheit for your refrigerator and zero degrees Fahrenheit
[706]
for your freezer and that's gonna help save a lot of money it's gonna really
[710]
improve that so that is a great actionable step that you can take right
[714]
now to see a drastic difference right away next is to use smaller appliances
[718]
we have an air fryer and Anniston pot those are my two favorite appliances in
[722]
the whole house and what I've noticed with those is you can cook your whole
[727]
dinner in them and it's not heating up your whole house with your oven so the
[731]
instant pot the air fryer those couldn't take a lot less energy than it would if
[736]
you were to use the oven and in addition to that it's not gonna heat up the whole
[740]
house like an oven does especially in Florida we have to be careful of that
[743]
because then the AC is running as well so using those smaller appliances can
[747]
really help to save in the long run because you're using less electricity
[751]
for them next is to block out outside air heat cold regardless of where you
[756]
are these are really gonna help make a big difference we use outlet covers on
[760]
the little ones that you have for your baby we have those on all of our
[764]
exterior outlet plugs that are in use and what that does is it helps block
[770]
that air that comes in you would be surprised on a windy day how much air
[773]
comes in through those little outlet holes so we use those to block all of
[777]
our outlets and then we also use shades and curtains and different materials to
[783]
block out the outside heat that comes in if you're in a cold environment that's
[789]
going to be the same exact thing I remember
[791]
when I lived up north and we had shades and curtain and that would put up the
[794]
shade for a daylight and it would be crazy how much more of a draft comes in
[798]
how much more of the the cold air came into the room when I was sitting by the
[802]
window just by that shade and just by those currents it really makes such a
[806]
big difference so we used the room darkening wines we use the ones that are
[809]
thick so that's keeping it for us in Florida that heat out so that it keeps
[814]
our room in our home cooler which saves a ton of money we want to know how we're
[818]
