How Dangerous is NYC Right Now... - YouTube
Channel: Here Be Barr
[0]
this is a video i really didn't want to make but聽
i've gotten so many questions about the rising聽聽
[5]
crime rate in new york city and we're going to聽
dive into it we're going to talk my personal聽聽
[9]
experiences crime stats what the city's trying聽
to do and if it's still safe for tourists to聽聽
[14]
visit you don't want to miss this before we get聽
into any statistics i want to share a story that聽聽
[19]
happened right here at atlantic avenue adriana聽
and i were waiting for an express train and a聽聽
[25]
young girl approached us she was asian my first聽
instinct was okay you know maybe she watches the聽聽
[32]
youtube channel it happens sometimes strangers聽
come up to me and say hello but this wasn't that聽聽
[36]
case she said to us guys i'm really afraid聽
right now can i ride the subway with you two聽聽
[43]
until i get to my stop and we said of course you聽
can sure and i felt so bad at that moment that聽聽
[50]
there's many new yorkers who are in real fear for聽
their safety every time they take the subway now聽聽
[57]
for my tourists watching i don't want you to panic聽
i'm not trying to scare you i still think you聽聽
[61]
should visit but there's some steps you need to聽
take and we're going to get to that later in the聽聽
[66]
video statistically speaking crime is up in every聽
single category in new york city grand larceny up聽聽
[72]
almost 70 percent grand larceny auto almost 100聽
increase hate crimes up 121 all of these numbers聽聽
[83]
should alarm you but we have to also take into聽
account historical perspectives here in 1990聽聽
[90]
there was about 100 000 robberies in 2021 there聽
was only 13 000 and i know a lot of native new聽聽
[99]
yorker friends of mine are afraid of those days聽
coming back they're seeing a spiral right now聽聽
[105]
and i can even share my own family's history my聽
parents immigrated to brooklyn in the late 1970s聽聽
[111]
from ukraine my mom got mugged my dad聽
had the battery from his car stolen聽聽
[118]
two separate times he even tried to chain the聽
hood of his car down and they still managed to聽聽
[124]
steal his battery i sincerely hope that new york聽
is not moving back towards those really dark days聽聽
[130]
in the past i've said things like crime聽
in new york city is only concentrated in聽聽
[135]
certain areas but the sad fact is that almost聽
every single police precinct in new york聽聽
[141]
has seen an uptick in crime shoplifting has gotten聽
absolutely out of control of late new york city聽聽
[147]
in fact one guy went viral when he was filmed聽
carrying 10 packages of meat outside of a trader聽聽
[153]
joe's as an employee of any of those types of聽
stores they're told do not intervene let them go
[164]
look how bad things have gotten at dwayne reed聽
to get toothpaste you have to get an associate聽聽
[170]
same thing with toothbrushes even underwear seen聽
this for expensive electronics before but for nine聽聽
[177]
dollar toothpastes wild shockingly the white聽
claws are totally available and not protected聽聽
[184]
you know things are getting interesting when聽
they're selling pepper spray on the streets that聽聽
[187]
duane reed actually had security but there's been聽
stores that have closed in new york city because聽聽
[193]
too many of their goods have been stolen action聽
could send me this clip of a 7-eleven in astoria聽聽
[198]
read that writing right there shoplifted to聽
death now a lot of this is happening in the聽聽
[204]
bigger corporations because if people tried聽
stealing from certain bodegas i think the聽聽
[209]
owners would have a serious problem with that聽
a topic that's on everybody's mind is subway聽聽
[215]
violence now the media is all over this anytime聽
there's any incident involving a shoving or a聽聽
[222]
stabbing in the subway pretty much guaranteed to聽
be front page news and the media knows what gets聽聽
[227]
clicks keep this in mind three million people a聽
day ride the subway your odds of having a problem聽聽
[234]
are extremely slim it's still relatable and it's聽
still sad it's still tragic because you read about聽聽
[241]
somebody getting slashed on the subway and you聽
think to yourself that could have been me that聽聽
[245]
could have been a loved one that could have been聽
a friend and that's the real scary thing going on聽聽
[250]
right now all right ben what's your opinion on the聽
increasing subway violence riding a subway now is聽聽
[257]
totally a different experience than when i first聽
moved into new york i get my mom calling me every聽聽
[263]
time you know did you ride the subway today it's聽
scary like writing the subway and then reading聽聽
[269]
seeing all these articles do you think tourists聽
have to be afraid tourists don't have to be afraid聽聽
[273]
but they have to be careful watching videos like聽
this well we'll put them in a good spot i would聽聽
[278]
say all right you're getting a bonus man you're聽
getting a bonus you know what would be a crime聽聽
[281]
in new york not getting some of these mini聽
donuts from cousins dozens at decal market
[289]
here's the question what is the city doing聽
about all this the new mayor eric adams just聽聽
[294]
released a 17-page plan to clean up the subway聽
and i read all of it so you don't have to聽聽
[300]
as announced in early january new yorkers will聽
continue to see an increased presence of nypd聽聽
[306]
and subway cars especially at high priority聽
stations the following is banned lying down聽聽
[311]
sleeping or outstretching in a way that takes聽
up more than one seat creating an unsanitary聽聽
[316]
environment by spitting littering and more聽
exhibiting aggressive behavior towards other聽聽
[321]
passengers using the subway system for any other聽
purpose than transportation smoking or open drug聽聽
[328]
use there's also a passage about outreach for the聽
homeless and he made some statements that majority聽聽
[335]
of homeless people are not violent there have been聽
a lot of high profile cases about homeless people聽聽
[341]
doing some terrible things in the city will聽
it work we're gonna have to see this was just聽聽
[347]
announced there's a pilot program coming where聽
they're gonna add protective doors to three subway聽聽
[352]
stations to start the kind of doors that are聽
really common in many countries around the world聽聽
[358]
and in hopes of stopping subway shovings and聽
also suicides i think this is a great step聽聽
[365]
in the right direction the problem is they did a聽
study a few years ago and found out that only 128聽聽
[372]
of the 472 stations could even handle it so聽
this is something that's going to be ongoing聽聽
[379]
and don't expect to see protective coverings at聽
every subway station in new york city anytime soon聽聽
[385]
the city has major problems and crime needs to be聽
a top concern especially with the covid 19 rates聽聽
[392]
waning right now and i'm not trying to聽
sound pessimistic making this video because聽聽
[396]
there's millions of people who go about their聽
lives in new york without incident every single聽聽
[402]
day there's certain things you have to adjust to聽
being a tourist or being a new new yorker there's聽聽
[407]
definitely one crime you're gonna see daily in new聽
york city and that's people jumping the turnstiles聽聽
[413]
at subways in fact there was a recent article that聽
said up to one-third of people aren't even paying聽聽
[420]
their bus fare anymore anytime you go to the聽
subway and you want to feel a little safer聽聽
[425]
ride in the car with the conductor and you聽
can find out where that is by locating the聽聽
[430]
indication board right here now adriana for聽
example my wife when i'm not with her she always聽聽
[436]
rides in this car this is very important聽
for my single females watching especially聽聽
[442]
don't stand too close to the edge here聽
always stay by the wall and be aware of聽聽
[449]
who's boarding the subway car that you're in if聽
anyone is acting erratic don't be afraid to get聽聽
[454]
up and move to the next car at the next stage聽
that's something a lot of local new yorkers聽聽
[460]
know to do that tourists don't i read a lot of聽
these facebook groups that say don't wear jewelry聽聽
[465]
on the new york city subway don't use your cell聽
phone 90 of people on the train are using their聽聽
[471]
phones what's more important is that you're paying聽
attention to who is jumping onto each subway car聽聽
[477]
you know just the other day someone walked onto聽
the train was talking to themselves looked erratic聽聽
[483]
they even sat right next to me nobody on the聽
train flinched they were paying attention聽聽
[487]
and he got off one stop later and things like that聽
will happen longer you ride the subway so just聽聽
[494]
be aware of it for my tourists watching the areas聽
around penn station and port authority in midtown聽聽
[499]
there's a lot of mentally ill people roaming聽
about so you have to be aware of that and if聽聽
[505]
you see something strange you know don't be afraid聽
to cross the street don't be afraid to turn around聽聽
[510]
you've got to keep your wits about you especially聽
in midtown don't get into confrontations with聽聽
[515]
strangers if someone's being too loud near you if聽
someone's smoking near you just move away remove聽聽
[522]
yourself from those situations i've read too many聽
stories about a fight being started over something聽聽
[528]
trivial somebody pulls a knife somebody pulls a聽
gun you don't ever want to fight with people who聽聽
[533]
have less to lose than you do i'm going to give聽
a tip to my tourists watching i don't think you聽聽
[538]
should ride the subway by yourself after 11 or 12聽
a.m especially if you're not comfortable with new聽聽
[544]
york city and definitely if you're a single woman聽
budget some money if you like to go out late for聽聽
[550]
ubers and lifts just one less thing to worry聽
about the trains take forever on the late night聽聽
[556]
routes and there's a lot less people around women聽
traveling by themselves you need to listen to this聽聽
[563]
be aware of who's around you especially when聽
you're riding the subway is somebody following聽聽
[568]
you i've heard different stories from women about聽
creepy stuff like this happening to them so don't聽聽
[575]
zone out when you're in public this is something聽
i've never talked about on a video but for the聽聽
[580]
last few years i always carry pepper spray when i聽
go out now i don't think tourists need to buy this聽聽
[586]
but if you move to the city you take the subway聽
a lot you're out by yourself at night especially聽聽
[592]
a lot of my women watching i would rather聽
have this and never need it than need it聽聽
[597]
and not have it crime is up that's a fact聽
but i didn't make this video to scare you聽聽
[602]
because there's still tons of people moving to聽
new york rental prices are still through the roof聽聽
[609]
i made this to inform you because no matter聽
what gotta take care of yourself first when聽聽
[614]
you're here another really big topic right聽
now in new york city is the cost of living聽聽
[619]
and in this video we break down all the聽
prices so you don't have to check it out
