WHAT SHOCKED US ABOUT LIVING IN CANADA | Moving From The U.K. - YouTube

Channel: This Is Our Retirement

[0]
Wow it's that time again Norm - It's our favourite聽 day of the week Tina it's Saturday a new YouTube聽聽
[7]
video - And today we are going to talk about what聽 shocked us about Canada when we first arrived聽聽
[17]
but before then - If you're new to the channel and聽 haven't subscribed yet and you like what you see聽聽
[23]
we would really appreciate if you would hit that聽 subscribe button for us it it helps us and it also聽聽
[30]
motivates us to do more videos and if you could聽 do the thumbs up and share that would be even聽聽
[36]
better So we want to put this into a historical聽 context we came to Canada in - '92 in February聽聽
[48]
'92 - February 1992 and these are some of our聽 first impressions of Canada, some are ongoing聽聽
[60]
so anyway let's take it away Number 1.聽 - And that was how cold it was when we聽聽
[68]
arrived in February it was minus 30 degrees聽 celsius and coming from the U.K.聽聽
[80]
we didn't really know how cold minus 30 was - It just happened to be February 1992 was one of聽聽
[88]
the coldest Februaries on record - And I think聽 there was probably the most snow that year too聽聽
[94]
we even arrived in our winter coats didn't聽 we Norm - We had new winter coats in England聽聽
[100]
from Mark's and Spencer's they said they聽 were winter coats but they were lying聽聽
[105]
- Because we were absolutely frozen - Somebody聽 said at the airport where's your winter coats聽聽
[112]
and we said we're wearing them and they said聽 you'd better go buy some winter coats pretty聽聽
[117]
soon - So that's what we did the next day wasn't it聽 - It was indeed and it was so cold that the hairs聽聽
[123]
inside your nostrils were freezing when聽 we got outside anyway Number 2. the price聽聽
[132]
on the shelf is not the price you'll pay聽 which trips a lot of people up from Europe and聽聽
[140]
everywhere else apart from America and Canada聽 yeah so you see something on the shelf and it's a聽聽
[148]
dollar and you think oh that's okay a good deal聽 so you go up to the cash register you give them聽聽
[154]
a dollar and they ask for a dollar and 13 cents聽 because the sales tax is not included so in聽聽
[162]
Ontario we pay a harmonized sales tax (HST) a combination of Federal and Provincial tax聽聽
[168]
so one is PST and GST and combined they聽 make 13% sales tax and that's what we pay聽聽
[178]
on everything so if you're a visitor here聽 just bring a little extra money for the tax聽聽
[185]
- Because the price you pay is not what you're聽 actually going to pay in the end that's and聽聽
[192]
moving on to Number 3. this was one that we did聽 find unusual at the time and that was tipping聽聽
[199]
in restaurants now I'm going to say family聽 restaurants not fast food where you go through聽聽
[205]
the drive-through if you go into a restaurant for聽 a proper sit-down meal - If you go for breakfast 聽
[212]
lunch and dinner what Tina's saying is it's not聽 Mcdonald's or Burger King where you go in for聽聽
[217]
a burger, it's a restaurant where you sit in - You are expected to pay between 15 and聽聽
[224]
20 percent to the servers as a tip and they聽 actually rely on that because they do get paid聽聽
[231]
lower than what everybody else does in the聽 restaurant so they actually rely on the tipping聽聽
[237]
so we do recommend it, if you've had a great聽 meal then give them twenty percent make聽聽
[244]
it a nice tip make something - It's different to the聽 U.K. and Australia and other countries where聽聽
[252]
the waiting staff the servers are employed on a聽 living wage and they know that going into the job聽聽
[259]
and can make a career of that in North America聽 the servers are paid less than the minimum wage聽聽
[267]
and they rely on tips to give them a living聽 wage that was just something that caught us out聽聽
[275]
Number 4. Foreign credit history does not follow聽 you which can be a good thing or a bad thing聽聽
[283]
if you're running from the tax man and you're聽 bankrupt it's probably a good thing but if you've聽聽
[289]
got good credit history and you think coming to聽 Canada as a new Canadian you're going to get聽聽
[295]
a credit card well - Think again - You're聽 going to have to build a credit history and聽聽
[302]
build your credit score and the other thing聽 is if you're a professional like a Lawyer Doctor聽聽
[310]
Dentist your professional credentials don't travel聽 here either you have to be re-certified by the聽聽
[320]
college that looks after that particular聽 profession so that's foreign credit history聽聽
[327]
that caught us out because we did have very聽 good credit from England but they didn't seem聽聽
[333]
interested in that - We had to rebuild didn't we 聽 Number 5. This is one of my favourites and is聽聽
[342]
Christmas lights on houses outside, just聽 fell in love with the fact that there were聽聽
[350]
Christmas fairy lights outside on houses聽 they looked beautiful especially with the snow聽聽
[357]
and just wonderful and at that time nothing like聽 that happened in the U.K. - No you might get a聽聽
[365]
string of lights around the inside of somebody's聽 window or Ikea used to sell those little electric聽聽
[372]
candle type things you could put in the window - Nothing like this - This was just so romantic and聽聽
[379]
magical - It was pretty wasn't it I fell in love聽 with that - It was beautiful still is and we聽聽
[385]
still love seeing that it is Number 6. - This is an聽 interesting one Norm - The size of refrigerators
[397]
and also what Canadians store in them as well coming from England we'd been used to having 聽聽
[404]
what they would call in Canada a bar fridge but聽 it was the main fridge that we had back in聽聽
[409]
in the '80s and '90s and that聽 was about a four cubic foot聽聽
[413]
under the counter refrigerator and you聽 just put perishable items into them聽聽
[420]
in Canada we see these enormous cabinets聽 the average are 21 cubic feet so that's what聽聽
[429]
five times larger than a British fridge back聽 in '92 we're talking - They were absolutely聽聽
[436]
huge weren't they - When we looked inside聽 some of them from our friends we were thinking聽聽
[443]
what are you putting in the fridge there's jam聽 ketchup there's marmalade - Like everything聽聽
[450]
went in - Pickles and we were always brought聽 up that those were preserves they didn't need聽聽
[456]
refrigerating but what do we know - Yeah because聽 we kept them in like a pantry larder didn't we聽聽
[462]
in the U.K. - We did but now we keep them in the聽 fridge because it's a great storage cupboard聽聽
[469]
- As well as the beer goes in there too - Oh yeah聽 you can't forget the beer and wine so Number聽聽
[475]
7. Teen What do we think of this one - What shocked us the price of gas or petrol it聽聽
[484]
was like half price in fact not only gas it was聽 cars, the cars were cheaper the houses were way聽聽
[493]
bigger for the same money, would buy a bigger聽 house you could get a bigger car couldn't you聽聽
[501]
for the same sort of price everything was cheaper聽 wasn't it cheaper - And to put the price of petrol聽聽
[509]
and gas into perspective when we first came over聽 here I think it was around 54 cents for a litre聽聽
[518]
and in England it was exactly the same 54 pence聽 for a litre but at that time the exchange rate was聽聽
[526]
2.3 Canadian dollars to one pound so literally聽 gas was less than half price for us so it was聽聽
[535]
amazing to see that we could keep much more聽 money in our pockets - Yeah it was great wasn't it聽聽
[541]
was a big shock - It was - A nice shock to have聽 money left over wow one of the other things now聽聽
[550]
we're on Number 8. This did shock us - You can't聽 buy beer wine and liquor at the supermarket聽聽
[561]
not how we did in England in the U.K. so that聽 that was a surprise that when we arrived here聽聽
[567]
the only place you could buy alcoholic beverages聽 was through the Liquor Control Board of Ontario聽聽
[574]
the LCBO or what was Brewer's Retail which is聽 now the Beer Store and those are the only two聽聽
[581]
places you can buy alcohol recently they've聽 allowed select supermarkets to sell聽聽
[591]
but they're just acting as agents for the LCBO聽 so there's no competition there's no discount in聽聽
[598]
prices you will buy from a supermarket the beer聽 or some of them have wine as well but it will be聽聽
[606]
exactly the same price the LCBO charges - We聽 don't have any supermarkets selling wine around聽聽
[611]
here do we the only one we have is we can get聽 beer at is Walmart - That's right - But I know in聽聽
[618]
certain areas of Toronto or Ottawa you聽 can get wine there can't you - Yes you can聽聽
[625]
Number 9. Teen - This is a biggie how big Canada聽 is just completely shocked us blew us away聽聽
[637]
- It's enormous it really is and the maps seem聽 deceiving - Absolutely we kind of thought we'd be聽聽
[644]
going everywhere and visiting in a very聽 short time - When you come from Europe you聽聽
[649]
have that sort of geography mentality that you聽 could drive through five countries in half a day聽聽
[658]
or you could go the whole length of Britain聽 in I don't know 10 hours to 12 hours聽聽
[665]
but here it's just absolutely enormous and to聽 give you an idea Ottawa to Toronto would be聽聽
[673]
in good traffic around five and a half hours聽 to drive that - So it's a big place isn't it (yeah)聽聽
[682]
and we hear people coming here for one week's聽 holiday and they think they're gonna see it all聽聽
[691]
don't they they think they're gonna do Niagara聽 Falls, Toronto they're gonna do Quebec City,聽聽
[697]
Vancouver they have absolutely no idea聽 you're pretty much Norm you just can't see聽聽
[704]
the whole of Canada on a two week vacation - 聽 Just pick a region and enjoy that and not聽聽
[714]
hire the private jet so Number 10. we're at the聽 end what shocked us about Canada the wildlife聽聽
[724]
it's absolutely amazing the diversity of wildlife聽 in Canada we were going through Algonquin Park聽聽
[732]
one day and we saw a whole pile of people stop聽 by the side of the road so we knew there was聽聽
[737]
a bit of excitement going on so we pulled over聽 took a look, a huge Moose there just feeding by聽聽
[744]
the side of the road minding its own business absolutely massive tall bigger than a cow聽聽
[756]
- We've never seen anything like it - And they can聽 roam wherever they want they're free to roam,聽聽
[762]
Black Bears we've seen a few of those not聽 too many - No fortunately from a distance聽聽
[770]
- Yeah it's not like you bump聽 into them at the supermarket聽聽
[775]
they're afraid of us as we are of them so聽 they're very much out in the countryside yes聽聽
[782]
we have seen them and very cute they tend聽 to run away - Yes oh and don't forget those聽聽
[790]
raccoons Norm we thought they were the cutest聽 cuddliest things when we saw them didn't we聽聽
[798]
- The little bandit mask on - They are cute now we聽 know they're not quite that cute as they look and聽聽
[805]
they can get into a garbage can pretty well (yeah)聽 that's their favourite - Even locked garbage cans聽聽
[812]
they seem to find a way to get in it - They're very聽 ingenious very strong as well as beautiful and聽聽
[819]
then we are getting to see a lot of wildlife聽 from the apartment building which is unusual聽聽
[825]
we have the lake here and over the聽 last three days we've been seeing聽聽
[830]
- Tundra Swans - On their migration route聽 north to the Arctic and also to Alaska聽聽
[838]
they're just absolutely beautiful how many were聽 there yesterday Tina - We counted over聽聽
[844]
40 of them yesterday - And basically they come聽 to our lake here just to rest overnight and聽聽
[852]
feed on some aquatic vegetation and then聽 early in the morning they're off again聽聽
[858]
we've had three waves of them coming through聽 and it's just beautiful to see them and when聽聽
[865]
they take off they're all in their formation and聽 they are huge animals - It's very exciting to see聽聽
[873]
- It really yes so great entertainment for聽 living here (yeah) plus Bald Headed Eagles聽聽
[881]
- Yeah we've been seeing those lately quite a few聽 of them haven't we - Yes we have - We just love聽聽
[887]
it - So the diversity of wildlife that we can just聽 see from our apartment is is really amazing so聽聽
[894]
that was what shocked us about Canada I聽 hope you enjoyed our video we appreciate聽聽
[901]
all your support of our channel it's really very聽 encouraging isn't it Tina - Absolutely and we hope聽聽
[907]
everybody is staying safe and keeping well - We聽 certainly do - And until the next time bye bye, bye
