MBA in Harvard: Fees, GMAT, GPA! Does IIT Tag Matter? - YouTube

Channel: Singh in USA

[0]
- So, hey guys so far we have learned a lot
[1]
about MBA in the US.
[3]
Like school, salary, package, etc
[5]
But today we will be mainly learning about
[7]
MBA at Harvard because
[8]
that is recognized all over the world.
[10]
approximately, every student has this dream
[12]
to switch their streams from
[14]
engineering or IT job because they get bored
[17]
and Harvard pretty much changes the game because
[20]
that's like one of the best university for
[22]
MBA in US. So without any further ado.
[24]
Let's get started.
[25]
[music]
[33]
The reason why I'm making this video
[35]
is to tell you that Harvard, MIT
[37]
are Universities which
[39]
do not take slow workers and give fast workers
[41]
Arpit correctly said that in the MBA US video
[43]
that they take in hard- workers and give hard-workers
[46]
So that's why I want to show you the average profiles of
[49]
Harvard students
[50]
what qualifications do they have
[52]
and how their profile look like
[54]
which make them eligible to be at Harvard.
[56]
So first of all, I want to share that this information
[58]
is once again connected with the help of Shresth
[60]
So he got into NYU. He also applied to Wharton
[63]
so he's eligible to give you some counselling.
[65]
So here's his number. You can definitely ping him anytime.
[68]
So looking into the MB class of 2021
[70]
You can clearly see that around 10,000 students apply
[73]
and around 900 to 1000 students get accepted
[76]
So it means that acceptance rate is around 10%
[78]
So it's fairly easy. No, that's absolutely not true
[81]
Because Harvard is one of the most difficult business school
[84]
to get into.
[85]
there way above average
[87]
Students are applying so you have to be like so
[90]
smart to even consider applying
[92]
so that's why you cannot even consider applying
[95]
if your profile is not as good as the one
[98]
I am showing. So you can clearly
[99]
See that Harvard is pretty diverse
[100]
You can see students from all around the world
[103]
and as compared to MIT, I noticed that
[105]
Like Asians are dominating because it is like STEM heavy
[109]
institute, but that's not the case at Harvard
[111]
So now let's look into the tuition fee at Harvard.
[114]
So as we have already talked about in
[117]
Georgetown University, so when I visited there I found
[119]
out that most of the students are paying around
[122]
$160,000 to
[123]
$200,000, after scholarship
[125]
$100,000 but at Havard, one year tuition fee is around
[129]
Hundred and ten thousand dollars and if you have to multiply
[132]
by 2 because MBA is usually finished in two years. So
[135]
$220,000 so that becomes more than around
[138]
1.5 crores, so it could be around 1.8 crores
[141]
So that's way too expensive,
[143]
but you don't have to worry a lot about it
[144]
You know, why because they will be giving a need place
[148]
Scholarship or fellowship depending on your income, etc.
[150]
depending on your saving and according to those limits.
[152]
You can maybe get like around $40,000
[155]
but very very expensive or 80,000 for a two-year program
[159]
So that's why a lot of students applying to Harvard
[162]
end up with a debt of around-
[165]
- you can clearly see that average
[166]
Harvard education debt is around a hundred thousand dollars.
[169]
So it is a lot. So now getting back to the profile
[172]
So the first important step to apply to Harvard is your GPA.
[176]
so average GPA from US
[178]
Institute's is out of four
[180]
so out of 4, you should have a minimum 3.7
[183]
but in India, the GPA is out of 10
[186]
So you should give importance that in u.s
[190]
It is very easy to get 4.0 GPA four out of four
[194]
because I also have a 4.0 GPA but in India
[196]
It's way more difficult
[198]
So there an average IITian gets a 9.2, etc
[202]
So due to this reason, if you have if your GPA is like
[205]
close to eight, it should be good
[207]
So you should be qualified to apply and if you cannot
[209]
meet the requirements you can definitely compensate with your GMAT score
[212]
so moving on with the
[214]
education majors so you can clearly see that there distribution
[217]
is even now because in MIT students go for STEM.
[220]
But here you can see econ or business majors
[223]
also stem and humanities.
[225]
So overall it is very diverse
[226]
So no matter what you're studying right now in your undergrad.
[229]
You can definitely consider applying for MBA later on in your career
[232]
So moving on with the minimum years of experience
[235]
for Harvard. I have seen in India
[237]
in IIMs, ISPs
[239]
Average two to three years with the end experience,
[242]
but Harvard has 5 years average
[244]
there can be less or more. So no five years of work experience means that you will not be eligible
[250]
For need-based scholarship or need-based favour at Harvard.
[254]
Because if you work in the US for 5 years
[256]
you can probably save around $200,000
[258]
to
[259]
$250,000 if you are spending it wisely
[262]
But if you are applying from India, you could not do the same
[265]
So if you are working in the US
[267]
so it will be easier for you to pay
[269]
as compared to in India
[270]
and here I noticed that
[272]
The industry is pretty much very diverse as well
[275]
So you will see 15% consulting or 16% venture capital
[279]
so it is not that
[280]
Mainly engineering students or are coming from an IT job.
[283]
so you will see a very diverse class in Harvard
[286]
So that's a great thing
[288]
but I noticed in IIM and ISP that
[291]
the class is filled with IITians.
[294]
and a lot of engineers
[295]
so here you will get a lot of diversity
[297]
So moving on to the next important step
[299]
that is GMAT score
[300]
It is kinda similar to GRE
[302]
because it has quant and verbal section
[304]
But before you even get confused by these
[308]
score ranges. Because you would think that
[310]
if your score is in this range, then I ma applicable for Harvard
[314]
But that's not true because this score is relative
[317]
So if you see at this chart, so this chart kind of simplifies
[321]
because our GMAT score, is out of 800
[324]
So this chart kind of converts
[327]
that so if your verbal score is around
[330]
42+, that makes it 95 percentile and if your
[334]
quant score is about 50+
[336]
that will make you 94 percentile
[339]
so 94% means that you are performing better than
[343]
94% of the people who took the test
[347]
it means that if 100 people gave the test and if you get 95%
[351]
you have performed better than 95
[353]
So that's what they want because average
[355]
average students applying to Harvard for MBA are
[358]
95 percentile or even higher
[361]
so usually your quant score should be 50-51 that is close to a hundred percent and
[365]
Your verbal score should be 42 plus that is also very high
[369]
So you have to work really hard towards your GMAT test
[372]
So now going back to the score ranges
[374]
You can once again clearly see that GMAT plus GPA
[377]
is an integral part of your application
[379]
so if both your scores are not good
[381]
There's a possibility that they will not even open your application
[384]
because if both the scores are good, you will approx get 50%
[388]
chances increased to get an invite to be interviewed at Harvard for MBA
[392]
so you have to pay a lot more attention
[394]
Towards your scores and grades
[396]
So now moving into the feeder companies
[399]
so from which companies are students going to Harvard
[401]
so the most popular company is
[403]
McKinsey and company
[404]
and I found it interesting that
[406]
from UBER 11 students are going
[411]
Compared to 22 students going from Facebook, Netflix, Google
[415]
it would be due to high satisfaction levels
[418]
there that they don't want to go for MBA or whatever reason
[421]
so it means that if
[422]
you are in the top three consulting companies
[425]
or you have some consulting companies experience?
[429]
Then you have more chances of going into Harvard for sure.
[432]
So looking into some popular university students in Harvard
[435]
So I was surprised to see that IIT is in the list
[437]
not just in the list
[438]
But also above some Ivy League schools like Cornell and Brown
[442]
So it was a bit shocking that
[444]
but then I digested the fact because MIT also accept IITains in majority
[449]
So it's kind of true for MBA students and Harvard as well
[452]
But its clear that if you are form IIT or these top 10 schools
[457]
your chances increase. But that doesn't guarantee
[460]
admission because they also look into your overall profile and your
[464]
personality, so that's why you have to show that you have a great personality in your essays
[468]
and that can be shown with these three
[470]
Main characteristics or you can say these ten grades
[473]
So they also look how you have shown integrity in your company
[479]
where you worked for telecom. How much impactful have you been.
[482]
for example, if you worked in Google if
[484]
If you have done a small project here
[485]
So that will not be as valuable
[487]
For them as compared to a work in a startup company where
[490]
you increase 10% stocks to 100%
[492]
or else
[493]
from 10 dollar stocks to a 100 dollar stocks
[495]
you have done, so that's a bigger impact as compared to
[498]
a minor impact in the Google
[500]
So these things are important
[502]
and also creativity, community spirit
[504]
These kind of traits are also very important
[506]
which you can show with some like extracurriculars
[509]
you can show that you are involved in your community
[511]
and how much other things you do other than your work?
[514]
So you have to perform the
[515]
work-life balance
[516]
meaning, you are balancing both sectors
[518]
and doing something for your community
[520]
for example, increasing the community or
[522]
For example, you may have done some volunteer experience like growing trees in a community etcetera
[527]
So this results in community bonding and involvement.
[530]
So now finally if you feel that your profile is good
[535]
You can finally consider paying 250 dollars
[537]
To apply to Harvard because it's very expensive
[540]
because I have seen that
[542]
MBA applications are very extensive
[545]
and are above $100
[546]
for masters it is $100 but, for MBA it is very expensive
[550]
So you should not take risks, if your application
[553]
is not competitive
[554]
But now if your application is competitive
[558]
You can finally work on your essays and letters of recommendation
[560]
So for a letter of recommendation, I will give 2-3 tips
[564]
it has to be general like
[566]
like some letters of recommendation are generic that have only compliments
[570]
So you can also
[571]
take advantage and stand out in the crowd and write some flaws about you
[575]
write how from your flaws you overcome the situation and made it appreciable.
[582]
how you still have flaws, and how you are still working on it.
[586]
So you can show these things that is different from like
[589]
generic letter of recommendation and also some Harvard MBA essay tips
[593]
So I will leave this link in the description below
[597]
All the essay questions are given so you can read them and see
[600]
how an Harvard MBA essay looks like
[604]
from this, we get an overall understanding
[608]
they want to see that you not a robot not just showing
[611]
that I was an engineer and got bored
[613]
and want to change my position
[615]
You have to show more that
[616]
being an engineer, I tried being a project manager
[621]
But you couldn't do so. So you want to gain the skills to be at Harvard
[624]
so that you can become a better project manager
[627]
so that you can change your field. So if
[630]
you want to change to managing, you can mix your journey with it.
[633]
and you can show it in a more exciting manner.
[635]
that how you faced challenges
[637]
And so that so a lot of questions are answered here so you can definitely go over it
[641]
And then finally, I hope you will be interviewed at Harvard
[644]
because getting interviewed is a big thing as well
[646]
The interview acceptance rate, I think is 60%
[650]
because everyone, does not get the chance to get interviewed
[654]
and the interviews are quite tough
[656]
So I wish you all the best. I hope this video helps you out
[659]
So thank you so much for watching and
[661]
definitely even considered taking
[662]
Consulting from Shresth and his number is in the description below
[665]
and I will see you guys in the next one.
[666]
Good-Bye
