Winners & Losers - Episode 2: The 50 States of America - YouTube
Channel: WonderWhy
[0]
hello and welcome to episode two of
[2]
winners and losers and what shall be
[4]
looking at the 50 States of America once
[7]
again the first Cathy will be size the
[9]
largest of the 50 state says Alaska now
[13]
looking at map like this Alaska doesn't
[15]
actually look that big this is because
[17]
maps like this don't show lasker to the
[19]
same scale as the rest of the states in
[21]
reality Alaska is much much bigger than
[24]
that if you were to overlay Alaska's
[26]
most western point over the San
[27]
Francisco Bay Area its most eastern
[29]
point would be around Jacksonville
[31]
Florida on the opposite course Alaska
[34]
comprises 18 percent of the country's
[36]
total area and has nearly double the
[38]
length of coastline as the other 14 name
[40]
states combined if Alaska with our
[42]
country it would be the 20th largest in
[44]
the world and with her Alaska the USC
[47]
would drop from the fourth to fifth
[48]
largest country in the world behind
[50]
Brazil Alaska is larger than the 22
[54]
small states combined and is more than
[56]
double the size the second largest state
[58]
Texas in third place is California less
[61]
than a quarter the size of Alaska the
[65]
three smallest states are Connecticut
[67]
Delaware and Rhode Island competing the
[69]
largest and smallest days Alaska is four
[72]
hundred and thirty times the size of
[73]
Rhode Island of course
[75]
size is a relative issue while Rhode
[77]
Island may seem tiny compared to Alaska
[79]
compared to the three smallest countries
[81]
in the world
[82]
Vatican City Monaco and Nauru Rhode
[84]
Island seems pretty huge even compared
[87]
to larger countries like Malta Singapore
[89]
and Dominica Rhode Island still seems
[91]
pretty big in fact Rhode Island is
[93]
larger than 29 independent countries
[97]
moving on to population though and in
[99]
first place as California home to more
[102]
than 38 million people nearly 1/8 the
[104]
population of the entire country
[107]
California has three of the top ten most
[109]
populous cities in Enochs this if
[111]
California will is one country it would
[113]
be the 35th most populous country in the
[116]
world
[116]
once again Texas takes second place
[119]
Texas also has three of the country's
[121]
top ten most populated cities and sects
[124]
of the top 20 but despite this Texas has
[127]
about 12 million people less than
[129]
California
[130]
in third place is New York which has the
[133]
most populous city in the United States
[135]
its namesake New York City New York City
[138]
makes up about 43 percent of the state's
[140]
population yet less than 1% of the land
[143]
area New York City is by far the most
[146]
populous city in the state with the next
[148]
most populous city being
[150]
Buffalo is seventy thirty most populous
[152]
in the country the three least populated
[155]
states are North Dakota Vermont and
[157]
Wyoming California has about 65 times as
[161]
many people as Wyoming California has so
[164]
many more people than Wyoming that 15 of
[166]
California's counties have more people
[168]
than the whole state of Wyoming
[170]
California's smallest county by area San
[173]
Francisco at just 122 square kilometres
[176]
has about quarter million more people
[177]
than Wyoming despite weigh on being
[180]
about 5,400 times larger but despite all
[184]
this the state of Wyoming has more
[185]
people than thirty-three independent
[187]
countries the next Kathie were going to
[191]
look at as population density the most
[194]
densely populated state as New Jersey
[196]
the fourth smallest yet eleventh most
[198]
populous state this is largely due to
[201]
the state close proximity to New York
[203]
City and Philadelphia the first and
[205]
fifth most populous cities in the
[206]
country second place goes to the small
[209]
state Rhode Island and in third places
[211]
Massachusetts if the whole country were
[214]
as densely populated as New Jersey the
[216]
population of the United States would be
[217]
around 4.2 billion the least densely
[221]
populated states are Montana Wyoming and
[224]
Alaska if the whole country were
[226]
sparsely populated at Alaska the
[228]
population of the UNCA would only be
[230]
around 4.5 million but what if the
[234]
population densities of the states were
[235]
less extreme what if the size of the
[238]
state were appropriate for their
[240]
population for example what if the 15th
[243]
largest state was also the 15th most
[245]
populous state and what if we did this
[247]
for every state this is how the 50
[251]
states would look if their size and
[252]
population rankings were the same
[255]
I can't help but feel that California
[257]
really got the raw end of this deal you
[259]
may also notice Rhode Island which has
[261]
now literally an island state and only
[264]
one state stays in the same place second
[267]
largest and second was populous it's
[269]
Texas and they want to homicide rate
[273]
I'll start with the states with the
[275]
lowest homicide rate and they are you
[277]
Hampshire Vermont and Iowa the three
[281]
states with the highest homicide rates
[282]
all three of which are in the deep south
[284]
Alabama Mississippi and Louisiana in
[288]
fact most of the southern states have a
[290]
higher than average homicide rate which
[292]
can be seen from this map in what's the
[294]
darker shades of red represent a higher
[296]
homicide rate or if you prefer here's a
[299]
map showing them rank from 1 to 50 now
[303]
herbalist uh do is where the 50 stays in
[305]
this category is worth mentioning the
[307]
nation's capital Washington DC the
[310]
District of Columbia is its own federal
[312]
district nor part of any state but DC
[315]
has a homicide rate higher than any of
[317]
the 50 states in fact if the whole
[320]
United States had a homicide rate of its
[322]
capital city the USDA would have more
[324]
annual homicides than any other country
[326]
in the world and stacking with a theme
[329]
of death the next category is suicide
[331]
rate the states with the lowest suicide
[334]
rates are New York New Jersey and
[336]
Maryland the states with the highest
[338]
suicide rates are on Tana Wyoming and
[341]
Alaska now this bottom three may look
[344]
familiar that's because this is the
[346]
exact same bottom three as population
[348]
density it's possible there's a
[350]
correlation between population density
[352]
and suicide rate here's a scatter graph
[354]
showing all 50 states and if you
[357]
remember from episode 1 Greenland had
[359]
the highest suicide rate of any country
[360]
and was also the least densely populated
[363]
and once again mentioning Washington DC
[366]
which has a lower suicide written in any
[368]
of the 50 states and it's also more
[370]
densely populated in any of them as well
[373]
here's a color map showing the suicide
[375]
rates with all the states and once again
[377]
here they are right in order but moving
[382]
away from Death Note and on to gross
[383]
domestic product or GDP unsurprisingly
[387]
the top three of the three most
[388]
populated states if California is one
[391]
country it would have the eighth largest
[392]
economy in the world with a GDP similar
[395]
to that Russia this is despite Russia
[397]
having nearly four times the population
[399]
of California here's a map of all 50
[402]
states with compatible country in terms
[404]
of GDP now it's worth noting that this
[407]
is nominal GDP and doesn't take
[409]
population into consideration so if we
[412]
take Missouri for example compatible
[415]
with Nigeria both having a GDP of around
[417]
250 billion dollars but Missouri has a
[420]
population of around 6 million while
[423]
Nigeria has a population of 174 million
[426]
29 times that of Missouri if you're not
[429]
too good with flags though I've also
[431]
made a text version it doesn't quite
[433]
look as good though and here's a world
[436]
map showing the USA and the 50
[438]
compatible countries which have a
[439]
combined population of nearly 1.9
[442]
billion six times that of the u.s. see
[445]
now today the USA is made up of 50
[448]
states
[448]
hence Wireless 50 stars on the American
[450]
flag but this wasn't always the case so
[454]
what were the very first States to
[456]
become stays well the very first state
[460]
was Delaware admitted to the Union on
[462]
December 7 1787 I know this because it
[466]
says so on their flag the next two
[469]
states where Pennsylvania and New Jersey
[472]
but the very first American flag
[474]
actually had 13 stars representing the
[477]
original 13 colonies that declared
[478]
independence from the British Empire so
[481]
it could be argued that all 13 of these
[483]
states were first since they were all
[485]
part of the original Yates days even
[487]
though they all officially became states
[489]
at different times the 13 stripes on the
[492]
flag has remained constant again
[494]
representing the original 13 colonies
[496]
but the number of stars has changed
[498]
every time the new state has joined the
[499]
Union over the years the u.s. obtained
[502]
more land through various means and the
[503]
number of stars in the flag kept
[505]
increasing over time
[506]
in 1912 New Mexico and Arizona became
[509]
States that's completed was today known
[511]
as the lower 48 and for 47 years the
[514]
American flag had 48 stars the two most
[518]
recent states to join the Union we're
[520]
Alaska and Hawaii Alaska was purchased
[522]
from Russia in 1867 for 7.2 million
[526]
dollars which equates to about two cents
[528]
per acre 7.2 million dollars in 1867 is
[532]
equivalent to 119 million dollars today
[535]
as for Hawaii Hawaii was its own country
[539]
for a long time the Kingdom of Hawaii
[540]
and very briefly the Republic of Hawaii
[543]
this was until 1898 when Hawaiian
[546]
Islands were annexed and United States
[547]
as an organized incorporated territory
[549]
and on August 21st 1959 the same years
[553]
of Alaska Hawaii became the 50th state
[556]
adding another star and completing what
[558]
is the current flag of the USA the 50
[561]
star flag has now been used for 54 years
[563]
making the longest use flag in the
[565]
country's history now the final category
[568]
I'm going to look at as minimum wage
[570]
minimum wage and Linnet States can be a
[572]
very complex and often controversial
[574]
issue but the three states with the
[576]
highest minimum wages are the three West
[578]
Coast states Washington Oregon and
[580]
California but that doesn't mean that
[583]
Washington has the highest minimum wage
[584]
in the country because some individual
[587]
cities and counties can set their own
[588]
minimum wage the highest minimum wage in
[591]
the country is actually San Francisco
[593]
with a minimum wage of $10 but these are
[597]
the minimum wages as of July the 1st
[599]
2014 but several states pass bills to
[602]
increase the minimum wage to be
[604]
increased gradually over the next few
[605]
years now the federal minimum wage is
[611]
$7.25 that have a lower minimum wage
[613]
than this Arkansas Minnesota Wyoming and
[616]
Georgia although some states hello even
[620]
lower minimum wages than this to small
[622]
businesses for example in Montana an
[625]
employer grossing less than 110,000
[627]
dollars annually compares employees as
[629]
little as four dollars per hour
[631]
but then there's the whole issue of tech
[634]
staff which applies to jobs in which the
[636]
employee is expected to get regular tips
[638]
such as waiters and bartenders
[640]
for Tet stop the minimum wage can be as
[643]
low as $2.13 per hour in many states
[646]
where staff are expected to make the
[648]
rest of their paycheck through customer
[649]
tips although not all states pay tip
[653]
staff less than other workers there are
[655]
seven states that apply the exact same
[656]
and and ways to touch staff as you do
[658]
for other workers well as all for
[663]
episode two of winners and losers and
[665]
feel free to leave your suggestions for
[667]
episode three thanks for watching
