Civil War at Retirement Community Over Trump - YouTube
Channel: The Young Turks
[0]
>> Earlier this week, we talked about how
Donald Trump had tweeted a video of his supporters,
[6]
and one of them had chanted White Power.
[8]
He later deleted it and claimed that he didn't
know what was in the video that he had tweeted,
[14]
which also is not a good look.
[16]
Well, that started up a conversation about
the retirement community where the whole kerfuffle
[21]
happened.
[22]
And it's known as The Villages, and it's in
Central Florida, It's a gigantic community
[28]
of retirees.
[30]
And apparently they used to have a very friendly
environment there until 2016 came along and
[37]
it kind of ripped friendships apart, retirees
started arguing with one another about politics.
[43]
And things have become so heated in this community,
that it's being referred to as a civil war,
[50]
that's how heated it's become.
[52]
Now, just to give you some numbers that are
outrageous, but then when you think about
[56]
the fact that it's Florida, not that outrageous,
70% of people in this area voted for Donald
[63]
Trump back in 2016.
[65]
But what's happening today?
[67]
What is the environment like?
[68]
Well, we hear from the president of The Villages
Democratic Party, his name is Chris Stanley,
[75]
and he said we coexisted happily.
[78]
We had our club, they had their club.
[80]
They had their speakers, we would occasionally
get a speaker, right?
[85]
But then things started to really fall apart
when Trump started campaigning, Trump started
[90]
running, and everything just kind of led to
that terrible video that we showed you that
[97]
took place on June 14th.
[99]
But just to give you a little refresher, this
is what the civil war in The Villages looks
[103]
like.
[104]
>> There's your white.
[105]
>> White power, white power, white power.
[106]
>> There you go white power, do you hear that?
[107]
>> Trump.
[108]
>> Would you stop the language?
>> Trump.
[109]
>> Nasty language.
[110]
>> Listen to your president if you want nasty
language, you idiot.
[111]
>> Officer.
[112]
>> Get back in your car now, a woman, dick
wad.
[113]
>> You
>> Big boy.
[114]
>> If you touch me, here's the officer.
[115]
>> Where's the officer?
[116]
>> We don't need
>> Nazi pig.
[126]
>> This isn't what we are, this isn't what
we are.
[146]
>> No wonder.
[151]
>> Praying on November 3rd.
[159]
>> Okay, I know what it's like to live in
a building that is mostly full of retirees
[168]
and retirees love to get into your business
because like they're retired, right?
[173]
Like, of course what else are they gonna do?
[177]
And that place seems like my personal hell,
I'm just gonna be honest.
[180]
Even if I was only among the Trump haters,
I could not imagine being in that situation.
[186]
But anyway, let's hear from Sharon Sandler,
she's an anti-Trumper living in The Villages
[192]
and she says, I can't stand Trump, I think
he's a pervert.
[196]
>> I think these people are part of a cult
and brainwashed.
[200]
This is really bad living here.
[202]
Thank God we all have friends and we stick
together, but it's very hard living in the
[205]
Villages as a Democrat and not a Trump supporter.
[208]
Cenk, what say you?
[210]
>> Okay, first of all, there's actually wonderful
things that retirees do, including being some
[216]
of the best volunteers for progressive candidates
on the planet.
[220]
And it's so funny how similar you and I are
in some ways and how different we are cuz
[226]
I see a layout of that place and I think mm-hm,
what a lovely place to retire, maybe I'll
[232]
retire there one day.
[234]
The movie theater, the golf carts, it looks
beautiful.
[238]
And to me, god, who doesn't wanna go there
every night?
[242]
To me-
>> Not me.
[244]
>> The HOA at that place they are gonna be
up your bum like nonstop, like, are you having
[254]
your construction workers go through the main
lobby?
[258]
They're gonna dirty the carpet, that is unacceptable.
[261]
We're gonna write you up with the HOA, it's
like the worst experience ever.
[265]
Anyway, continue go ahead.
[266]
I'm sorry, this has nothing to do with the
retirees by the way, this has everything to
[269]
do with the fact that I hate my HOA.
[271]
Okay, continue.
[272]
>> Yeah, I was gonna say, this got weirdly
personal.
[277]
Okay, anyways, and I don't mind the disagreements.
[280]
If let's say I'm actually retired and in your
scenario, I have nothing to do, I'll be like
[285]
bring it, what do you the Trump people gonna
intimidate me.
[288]
And especially because, I've told you guys
this on episodes of Old School before, when
[295]
I get older and I'm close to there already,
there are going to be less than zero Fs given,
[300]
there are going to be negative Fs given, okay?
[304]
And that's where a lot of those folks are.
[307]
>> Okay, whether they're the right wingers
who are like, hey you know what, who cares
[313]
what anybody thinks would be any more, white
power, right?
[316]
You heard the guy say it, he said it very
clearly.
[318]
Or that's the woman on the other side, who's
like okay you bigger racist, etc, and she's
[326]
not sparing any F's either.
[328]
So I don't know I kinda like that, it reminds
me of like a Royal Rumble from the old school
[336]
WWF days.
[338]
So, they're having fun.
[340]
>> Yeah, but like okay, the zero Fs, if they're
genuinely enjoying these types of interactions,
[345]
do you boo not judging, it's what you like
to do, it's fine.
[350]
I have gone the route lately in my life of
the path of least resistance, I do not engage
[356]
in any type of political debate.
[358]
Even as someone is provoking me and I'm talking
about my personal life, not on the show or
[363]
at work.
[364]
I just, no, white flag, I'm not interested.
[367]
I don't wanna know about your political views,
I don't care about your political views.
[370]
I'm not interested in having a debate with
a normie because it's a frustrating and unwinnable
[377]
situation, right?
[379]
Usually when you're provoked like that, it's
not because they wanna be persuaded or they
[383]
wanna have a conversation, it's cuz they wanna
fight.
[385]
So, let's put that off to the side.
[387]
No, but the magic of being a retiree and not
having to worry about upsetting your employer
[393]
and possibly getting fired is that you can
literally do anything, right?
[398]
You wanna take ecstasy and go to a rave, do
it, right?
[401]
You wanna, I don't know, just do crazy stuff,
you wanna dress like a crazy person, do it,
[406]
it doesn't matter.
[407]
There are no consequences unless you break
the law.
[410]
So that's what I'm looking forward to in my
golden years, if I get there, right?
[416]
I can't wait to not worry about really, truly
feeling free, and not worrying about being
[425]
out in public.
[427]
And we're living in a surveillance state right
now, where everyone is filming everything,
[432]
and everyone is calling for everyone to be
fired.
[436]
I'm just anxiety-ridden over that, because
of course, if things can get out of control,
[443]
you can be provoked in a way, the camera might
be capturing you in a situation that's completely
[448]
out of context.
[449]
All of that stuff I think is anxiety inducing,
and I can't wait till when I'm in my golden
[456]
years.
[457]
And yeah, yeah I am at a rave, and I am tripping
balls and it doesn't matter, no one's gonna
[461]
do anything about it.
[463]
>> Yeah, you're looking forward to being on
uncancellable.
[466]
But so last thing on this, look, we covered
this story yesterday on the show too, The
[471]
Villages is funny they're having sex in public.
[476]
There's apparently one guy for every ten women
and the other women are saying, we're not
[481]
saying.
[482]
The women are throwing themselves at the guys,
maybe that's why I like it cancelled.
[487]
Anyway and the difference between you and
me is and I don't engage in those political
[495]
fights in my personal life, and I haven't
done it in 10, 20 years.
[498]
My dad is still trying to convince every religious
person to stop being religious.
[502]
He's 82 years old and he's going, you are
not going to heaven, it's all bull crap, you
[505]
have to let go of it right away.
[510]
I'm like, dad, you're freaking them out, just
let it be, let it be.
[514]
And Ana, we do it professionally.
[517]
So, we've convinced thousands of people at
a minimum, I don't need to go fight those
[522]
fights personally one at a time.
[525]
So, I'm more detached from it than you are
in a sense.
[528]
So if people came at me with absurd Trump
stuff in my personal life, I'd be like, yeah,
[533]
what else dude.
[534]
Like, I know they're wrong and I'm so secure
in that, that anything they say doesn't bother
[540]
me, unless they threaten violence and then
we're gonna have an issue, gotta call the
[548]
cops and all that.
