ThinkOrSwim Basics Tutorial - How to Buy Options - YouTube

Channel: ClayTrader

[0]
hey this is Nate from clique traitor
[2]
calm here with another thinkorswim
[4]
intro video if you watch some of the
[6]
previous videos you'll get a pretty good
[7]
overview of what the layout of the
[9]
thinkorswim platform looks like and how
[11]
things are laid out and where things are
[13]
at today we're going to look at trading
[16]
options and how to view the options
[17]
chain and just kind of how that's laid
[18]
out and nicker swim so we're going to
[20]
jump right into the trade tab as you can
[23]
see right here and you're going to enter
[25]
in our ticker symbol right here so we're
[29]
just going to take a look at the go pro
[30]
I can type that right go pro options
[33]
chain here so a quick overview of this
[35]
window kind of a recap from previous
[37]
videos this is going to be the
[38]
underlying information up here so this
[40]
is going to be the current price of the
[41]
stock itself and this is what you'd be
[43]
using if you're actually going to buy a
[44]
single stock or sell a single stock I
[47]
guess as well what we're going to be
[49]
looking at in this video is going to be
[50]
this options chain right here and that's
[52]
actually let us view the different
[54]
expiration dates and stuff for the
[56]
option with an option like I just
[59]
mentioned there's lots of different
[60]
expiration dates and those are all
[61]
listed for us right here so let's just
[63]
take a look at this one and what this
[65]
information actually means is no this is
[67]
the November 415 means it's the fourth
[70]
week of November in 2015 and that ends
[73]
on and it's actually 45 days away is
[75]
what the expiration date is so that's
[77]
kind of with that information there
[78]
there tells us so we're going to go
[80]
ahead and expand this here across the
[83]
top you can kind of see what these
[84]
different columns are we have implied
[86]
volatility probability even the money
[87]
the Delta the bid the ask and you have
[91]
that for both calls here and then over
[93]
here on the right we have that for puts
[94]
as well so you can see all that same
[95]
information right here then in the
[97]
middle we have expiration date and the
[99]
strikes as well
[100]
you can change what information is there
[103]
based on what you like to see you can
[105]
just use this layout button here so
[107]
layout and you can change the different
[109]
types of data and stuff that's displayed
[111]
for you there so I'm just going to leave
[112]
that how it is now another thing that
[114]
you might be interested in is this
[116]
strikes option here so right now I have
[118]
this set to show me all the strikes
[120]
available for this on for this
[122]
particular expiration date but I can
[124]
change it if I just want to see the four
[126]
closest to in the money or at the money
[127]
or the ten or whatever so I'm just going
[130]
to leave that at all of them and then
[132]
coming down here
[133]
basically the difference between each
[136]
hour each one of these option lists here
[138]
is a strike price so right here is the
[141]
list of all the strike prices and you
[144]
can see that this side the top of them
[146]
are in black and the bottom is in purple
[148]
and then the exact opposite here purple
[151]
and black and basically what that saying
[153]
is in the money or out of the money so
[156]
this lie anything in purple is in the
[158]
money and anything black is out of the
[160]
money so you can see right here that's
[162]
actually right between the 28th and the
[163]
2850 price points as you can see the
[166]
last price of the stock is 28:22 so
[169]
that's how we get that that the current
[171]
price let's knock is right between those
[172]
two so out of the money and in the money
[174]
so if we're actually looking at buying a
[177]
option or selling an option or whatever
[180]
we wanted to do it works almost
[182]
identical that it does - buying and
[184]
selling stocks so let's just say we're
[186]
going to buy just out of the money call
[189]
so on this right hand side we have the
[191]
calls as I said this first one in the
[193]
black is gonna be the first one out of
[194]
the money so it's going to right click
[195]
on it and go by and now rather than just
[197]
like the stock where we've had one
[198]
option now we have all kinds of
[200]
different options that we can do we can
[202]
do all kinds of different strategies in
[203]
place and such a single is basically
[206]
just buying one contract or how many
[207]
contracts you want not doing any kind of
[209]
other strategies like that so that's
[211]
we're going to do today go up here and
[214]
we're now it's going to pull up the same
[215]
window just like we had for trading
[217]
stocks as you can see here we're still
[219]
doing a spread there's no a single
[221]
there's no special spread that we're
[223]
buying it and at this point we're doing
[225]
10 option or 10 contracts so let's just
[227]
change that let's make it 2 let's make
[228]
that one for now
[229]
you can see our ticket symbol is GoPro
[232]
and you can see our expiration date here
[234]
we can change that if we wanted to
[235]
adjust our expiration date if we chose
[237]
the wrong one or kind of compare our
[238]
prices are we can see our start strike
[241]
price is the 28 50 strike price and
[243]
we're doing a call we could buy a put as
[245]
well we could sell a put we could sell a
[247]
call you only want that one in terms of
[250]
the order types and such over here
[252]
that's going to be the exact same as is
[253]
when buying a stock as well so we're
[255]
going to stick with a limit order and
[257]
we're going to say we're interested in
[260]
this if this if it's available for $2 so
[263]
if this stock if this option is
[265]
available for $2 go ahead and exit
[267]
disorder and we'll keep it good for
[269]
today so I'll go ahead and hit confirm
[271]
and send here it's going to bring up the
[273]
same window as it does when we trade
[274]
stocks just basically confirm what we're
[276]
wanting to do what it's going to cost us
[279]
and make sure we're using the right
[280]
account so we're going to go ahead and
[282]
hit send there and our order is sent in
[285]
through the software now if you go up
[287]
here to the monitor tab you can see that
[290]
here's our order that we placed we're
[292]
going to buy one contract of GoPro on
[296]
the expiration date of November 415 for
[300]
a 28 50 strike price and we're willing
[302]
to pay $2 for that contract you can
[306]
change that modify it here by
[307]
right-clicking on it you do a cancel and
[309]
replace order and that's going to pull
[311]
up that exact same exact same window we
[314]
just had open so we're just going to
[315]
delete that because we don't actually
[316]
want to trade that so you can see it's
[318]
still available here and another place
[320]
to view this same thing is on the charts
[322]
page just like we could with our stock
[324]
entry or our stock orders we can go over
[326]
here to the chart and we'll type in
[327]
GoPro and you can see right here at the
[330]
bottom here is our GoPro option order
[333]
that we have out there and the price you
[336]
can drag it up and down you can cancel
[337]
it just like you do with a stock so say
[340]
I want to cancel this I don't want this
[341]
order anymore I'm just going to go ahead
[342]
and hit that X it disappears you can see
[344]
our notification comes it up here if
[347]
cancel that order just to confirm that
[348]
we can go to the monitor tab we can see
[350]
canceled orders and here it is right
[352]
here the order we just cancel so if you
