10 Things To Do BEFORE You Start A Print On Demand Store... (Beginner Mistakes to AVOID) - YouTube

Channel: Wholesale Ted

[0]
hey everybody in today's video I'm gonna
[1]
give you ten important things that you
[3]
need to do before starting a
[5]
print-on-demand store and unfortunately
[8]
there are a lot of consequences if you
[10]
skip over this ten point cheap list and
[12]
none of them are good some of these can
[15]
lose you money from advertising
[16]
campaigns that we're doomed to fail from
[18]
the start some of them can cause you
[20]
massive headaches from customer service
[22]
issues and some of these can
[24]
unfortunately even result in your
[26]
advertising campaigns and your stores
[29]
getting shut down Plus in this video I'm
[31]
also gonna be answering some of the most
[33]
common questions that I get asked about
[35]
print-on-demand
[36]
and snow this video is not your usual oh
[39]
don't forget that you've got to have
[41]
your designs on a transparent background
[42]
nope I wanted to go beyond that and talk
[45]
about some of the important aspects of
[47]
print-on-demand that are often not
[49]
talked about so some of the things on
[51]
this list may surprise you so there are
[53]
the way let's talk about the first one
[55]
one only add a maximum of five color
[58]
variations to your product I'll tell you
[61]
now one of my absolute biggest pet
[64]
peeves it's coming to a print-on-demand
[66]
store a subscriber submitted to me to
[68]
review and seeing that they have added
[70]
ten plus color t-shirt options to their
[73]
store no there are multiple reasons why
[77]
this is a terrible idea
[79]
starting with the fact that you know it
[81]
looks absolutely terrible and
[83]
horrendously ugly having a million
[85]
billion colored t-shirt on a white
[86]
background in the image gallery the
[88]
second reason is that giving customers
[90]
lots of options is usually a bad idea
[92]
because of something called analysis
[94]
paralysis basically when it customer
[97]
sees lots and lots of different t-shirt
[98]
colors they become overwhelmed and don't
[101]
know which to choose and so ultimately
[103]
choose nothing at all and of course the
[106]
third reason is that sometimes certain
[107]
designs don't even look great in every
[109]
color so when you're choosing between
[111]
different colors something that's really
[113]
good to keep in mind is that when it
[115]
comes to t-shirts
[116]
EMAS long merch have found that darker
[118]
shades usually perform better with black
[120]
being their top selling t-shirt color
[122]
which is pretty cool to know to check
[125]
your print provider options before
[126]
selling internationally so here's a
[129]
common misconception that I see a lot of
[132]
people make
[133]
think that when they buy a shirt like
[134]
this from printf I but it's prenta fight
[136]
that I'm making it but often this isn't
[139]
true
[139]
instead print on demand services like
[141]
printf I often contract out to
[143]
third-party suppliers and manufacturers
[146]
with bread for they will automatically
[148]
choose which manufacturer will create
[150]
the item for you based on what country
[152]
your customer is located at the printer
[155]
fight don't let you do this instead they
[157]
make you choose when you come to a
[159]
product you want to sell be sure to
[160]
scroll down and check out your different
[162]
options as you can see each of these
[164]
providers has different pricing and some
[166]
offer more color options for their
[168]
t-shirts and others and they have
[169]
different production types and
[171]
importantly some are based in different
[173]
countries so for example if you were
[176]
mostly serving Europe then usually tick
[178]
still druk European US apply you choose
[181]
if you didn't need a color variation
[183]
that only t-shirt and Sons creates and
[185]
if he was selling predominantly to the
[187]
USA then obviously you would want to
[189]
come and choose between these suppliers
[191]
for most people they're probably going
[193]
to want to choose the dream Junction
[194]
since it has a great color selection a
[197]
fast turnaround time and it's the
[199]
cheapest 3 make sure that you have a
[201]
credit card or money set aside before
[203]
you start a store so another common
[206]
question that I get asked is this Sarah
[209]
I've added a pillow I've made with the
[211]
printful to my store if a customer buys
[213]
it
[214]
who pays printful for the item me or the
[217]
customer good question and the answer is
[219]
that you pay for that pillow not your
[222]
customer I'm going to show you an
[223]
example of how this different to
[226]
transaction thing works but I'm going to
[228]
use printer fight because of the fact
[230]
that when it comes to pillows it's way
[232]
cheaper than printful with printful they
[234]
cost $16.95 for the lowest option for
[237]
the standard square throw pillow whereas
[239]
with printer fight they start at 7
[241]
dollars and 37 cents with the printer 5
[243]
subscription much better
[245]
so anyway moving on you've gone ahead
[248]
and created this coffee pillow with
[249]
print 5 that you're selling to baristas
[251]
and cafes when a customer comes to your
[253]
store and buys it for $14.95 you will
[257]
receive this $14.95
[260]
- transaction fees not print a fight
[262]
they get none of it
[265]
Steve what actually happens is print a
[267]
file by default check your store once a
[269]
day for orders when it chicks and season
[271]
order it goes boom let's fulfill it and
[273]
starts the process they will charge the
[276]
credit card or debit card that you
[277]
should have added to your account in
[279]
advance and you need to add this
[281]
yourself in the settings you'll be
[283]
charged the price of the pillow which
[284]
again is seven dollars and 37 cents with
[287]
a subscription they will make sure that
[289]
the pillowcase is manufactured and then
[291]
shipped out to your customer and so no
[293]
the payment that is paid to you is
[295]
separate from the payment that you meet
[297]
the print-on-demand
[298]
provider they are two separate
[300]
transactions and so it's important to
[303]
remember that your Shopify payment will
[304]
take several days to arrive in your bank
[306]
account with payouts differing from
[308]
country to country and with PayPal in
[311]
the beginning it can take up to 21 days
[313]
to get your money so make sure that
[315]
you've either got a credit card or some
[317]
money set aside so that you can purchase
[319]
these items and advance to tide you over
[321]
in the meantime credit cards are usually
[324]
the best option for this because you've
[326]
normally got four to five weeks to pay
[328]
back the balance without occurring any
[330]
interest and you will receive your
[332]
payment well before that happens four
[335]
check if your written phrase is
[336]
trademarked and avoid copyrights so
[339]
there are two other common questions
[340]
that I often get asked the first is this
[343]
Sarah how do I know if a design is
[345]
copyrighted before I use it or not it's
[348]
Lois please help okay so to help me
[350]
answer this question I actually found a
[352]
t-shirt that features that phrase that
[355]
is being sold online here is a t-shirt
[357]
currently selling on Amazon featuring
[359]
this design and so you see it and you
[361]
think that's cool I'd like to sell a
[364]
t-shirt like this as well but wait is
[366]
it's copyrighted how do I check I know
[370]
that I can do a search for trademarks
[372]
but how do I do a search for copyrights
[374]
how do I know but this is copyrighted
[376]
well the answer is that you don't need
[379]
to check because by default and law the
[382]
moment a piece of artwork is created it
[385]
is by default copyrighted so yes we know
[388]
without checking anything that this
[390]
t-shirt design is indeed copyrighted
[393]
womp womp but what you can do is use
[396]
this design burns
[398]
raishin and to make your own version of
[400]
it and so I went to canva and I made my
[403]
own quick design now know this is not
[406]
the world's best design either don't
[408]
judge me
[409]
there is a reason I hire people to do my
[411]
graphic designs for me but I just wanted
[414]
to create a quick one as an example so
[416]
that I could show you that absolutely
[418]
100%
[419]
legally I can now take this different
[422]
take on that design and sell it on a
[424]
t-shirt this t-shirt design here while
[427]
featuring the same words is visually
[429]
different and that's what's copyrighted
[432]
the visual style the art and something
[435]
that's good to keep in mind is that
[437]
small phrases like world's best rabbit
[439]
dad cannot be copyrighted so yes even
[442]
though this design is copyrighted as
[444]
long as you redesign it in your own
[447]
style then that's absolutely fine but
[449]
while small phrases like world's best
[451]
rabid dad cannot be copyrighted they can
[454]
be trademarked which leads me to the
[455]
second question I'm often asked Sara how
[458]
do I know if a phrase is trademarked
[460]
it's a good question but you know I've
[462]
pretty much spoiled the arts were
[464]
already on this video basically when it
[466]
comes to trademark phrases they are very
[468]
easy to do a search for alright so
[470]
you've seen this t-shirt is selling well
[472]
on eBay which it is and now you want to
[474]
make your own version of it - how do you
[476]
know if someone has trademarked the
[477]
phrase Freddy sage relax well it's
[480]
actually quite simple
[481]
each country has its own trademark
[483]
search engine I'm here at the USA
[485]
trademark electronic search system to
[487]
check that this phrase is trademarked
[488]
all I need to do is type in free DC's
[491]
relax and do a search and we do that we
[493]
will find that nope we get nothing no
[496]
results this phrase has never been
[498]
trademarked
[499]
now let's computer what happen in a
[501]
finds did came back and typed in the
[503]
phrase lets get ready to rhumble an
[505]
extremely famous phrase that most of us
[508]
will have heard if we type that in take
[511]
a look we see lots of trademarks
[514]
something to keep in mind though is that
[516]
unlike with copyrights which most
[518]
countries have agreed to protect by
[520]
default trademarks must instead be filed
[522]
in each and every country and so for
[525]
example just because something is
[526]
trademarks in the USA doesn't mean that
[529]
it would also be trademarked here in New
[531]
Zealand for example many moons ago
[533]
Paris Hilton famously trademarked the
[536]
phrase that's hot to use on alcohol and
[539]
clothing much well if we go back to the
[541]
USA trademark search we can find that
[544]
old trademark that's hot
[546]
it's now dead and has now been abandoned
[548]
but we can see that it once used to be
[550]
active and had been filed by her whereas
[552]
if you come to the New Zealand trademark
[554]
search and look for that phrase that's
[556]
hot we will not find any trademark Oh
[559]
lots of trademarks featuring the word
[561]
that but not that's hot
[564]
and so here in New Zealand anyone could
[566]
have used that phrase and by the way if
[568]
you are enjoying this video and would
[570]
like even more free education on how to
[572]
start your own print-on-demand store and
[574]
you should be sure to download our free
[575]
ebook the six tips that six-figure
[577]
online stores used to make over $10,000
[580]
a month you'll learn how to utilize
[581]
print on demand and drop shipping to
[584]
build a successful online store and you
[586]
will find a link to download that ebook
[587]
and the video description below five
[590]
have lifestyle photos for your products
[592]
not just generic mock-ups
[594]
okay so when you go ahead and you create
[596]
a product with the print on demand
[597]
service you usually get a picture to
[600]
help you promote your product right just
[602]
one problem
[603]
these simple mock-up photos of a product
[605]
on a plain white background are terrible
[607]
when used for advertising yes if you
[610]
want to run ads to sell your products
[613]
then lifestyle images are key well you
[616]
know maybe not this one my good friend
[618]
and print-on-demand Millenia Michael che
[621]
very much believes that the reason why
[622]
he was able to make $100,000 with this
[625]
one design was because he used this
[628]
amazing lifestyle image in his ads and I
[630]
agree
[631]
luckily though you can replicate
[633]
Michael's success by creating your own
[635]
lifestyle images without having to order
[637]
your products in advance and take your
[639]
own photos next to an amazing service
[641]
called playset with place that you can
[644]
take artwork designs and place them onto
[645]
lifestyle ads that feature models and
[647]
they don't just have to be t-shirt
[649]
images they have lifestyle photos for
[651]
print-on-demand mucks and they have
[653]
lifestyle photos for different types of
[654]
tote bags and they have lifestyle photos
[656]
for pillows and would you believe that
[659]
even recently a headed photos of hooded
[661]
blankets cheer to pop
[663]
demand using it is really simple let's
[666]
say I was selling this t-shirt from
[668]
prenta five well what I would do is I've
[670]
come to place it and choose which
[672]
t-shirt that I wanted after you've
[674]
chosen what color shirt you want all you
[676]
need to do is come and upload that
[678]
design or picture that you added to the
[680]
t-shirt that you created with Brent fire
[682]
and let it load once loaded you can
[684]
resize it and place it roughly in the
[686]
same position as the t-shirt you made
[688]
with printf a place that will now
[690]
generate a lifestyle for you that is
[693]
awesome to use in advertising this
[696]
picture here is absolutely 99.99999% of
[700]
the time going to convert infinitely
[702]
better than the generic product on white
[705]
background photo printer Phi spits out
[707]
for you and here is another important
[709]
tip when you are choosing which photos
[711]
to use with play set if possible it's a
[713]
great idea to find a picture featuring
[715]
something related to your design on
[717]
place that you can use the search
[718]
filters on the left to look up specific
[720]
types of photos so for this one I use
[723]
the Pitt filter and search through the
[725]
different photos featuring people with
[726]
their pet dogs by having a Corky
[728]
featured and my EMA Jeff that well has a
[730]
Corgi t-shirt it is extremely effective
[733]
and engaging considering that it cost
[736]
just fourteen dollars a month for a
[737]
place that subscription I think that
[739]
either there or something very similar
[741]
is an absolute no-brainer for
[743]
print-on-demand stores and I'll have a
[745]
link to how you can get it in the video
[747]
description below 6 don't just opt for
[750]
selling t-shirts now look don't get me
[753]
wrong
[753]
obviously t-shirts can make you a lot of
[756]
money yeah so they're still good but
[760]
they aren't the only type of print on
[762]
demand products out there especially if
[764]
you are selling in your own store for
[766]
example leggings can sell for massive
[768]
markups because their value is ambiguous
[770]
the reason why they are ambiguous is
[773]
because wow you could go to your local
[775]
mall and potentially find t-shirts that
[777]
feature dogs on it you are extremely
[779]
unlikely to find anything similar when
[782]
it comes to leagues and so when a pug
[784]
mother sees her beloved on leggings she
[787]
is incredibly unlikely to have ever seen
[789]
anything like this before it is
[791]
extremely unique and original pricing
[793]
ambiguous now let me ask you a question
[795]
how much do you think this cool
[797]
steampunk hat here is worth for most of
[800]
you you're probably going to answer yeah
[802]
I don't really know you don't know
[805]
because for most of you you've never
[806]
seen anything like this before and as
[809]
scientific studies have shown the way
[811]
that most of us decide how much
[812]
something is worth is through price
[814]
anchoring is by looking at other similar
[816]
products and in seeing what they sell
[819]
for and so when you go and advertise the
[821]
park mother this cool hooded blanket as
[823]
an upsell she's likely never seen it
[825]
before and so you have a lot more
[826]
flexibility with sitting your price
[828]
Kevin check to see if your design can be
[830]
printed onto a different product this
[833]
reminds me of how in this video Michael
[835]
and I chatted about repurposing designs
[837]
you see what a customer buys this
[839]
t-shirt from him do you know what other
[841]
product he offers them to buy this a
[844]
monk featuring basically the exact same
[846]
design this is usually the easiest way
[848]
to create the feet of up styles with
[850]
print on demand by taking the same
[852]
design and then printing it onto another
[854]
product
[855]
unfortunately not all types of designs
[857]
work on all types of products a single
[860]
image design here it looks great on a
[862]
t-shirt but it doesn't really work when
[864]
it spreads onto leggings does it so
[866]
something that's good to keep in mind is
[868]
that designs that are patterns like this
[870]
print really well on two pillowcases and
[873]
on two blankets and on two leaking and
[876]
even on two tote bags
[877]
whereas this sort of single image design
[879]
may not work so well in leggings but it
[881]
obviously works really well and printed
[883]
onto t-shirts or onto hoodies plus they
[886]
work with mugs as well and here is a tip
[889]
for increasing conversions with up sales
[891]
place that have a new feature where some
[893]
of their models feature both a t-shirt
[895]
and a mug in the same picture that way
[899]
you can upload either the same design or
[901]
a slightly different design for H and
[903]
then use this image when upselling the
[905]
customer to see a mug after the bought
[907]
the t-shirt you bought the t-shirt now
[909]
buy the mug as well and by the way if
[911]
you have learnt something from this
[912]
video and you would like to learn even
[914]
more about setting your own successful
[916]
online store then you should be sure to
[918]
subscribe it's like that little
[919]
notification about so that you don't
[920]
miss out on any of our videos eight add
[923]
scarcity but not to every product
[926]
scarcity can be
[927]
very effective way to get customers to
[929]
buy now in the moment for fear of
[931]
missing out one of my favorite tactics
[934]
in a Facebook ad is to say that you've
[936]
got a sale on but only until stocks last
[939]
and to then at a product inventory back
[942]
to your product listing showing that
[943]
stock is low and that it will sell out
[946]
soon however this kind of gets ruined if
[950]
your customer starts clicking on other
[952]
items in your store and sees hey all of
[954]
these items are on sale and they all
[956]
seem to almost be out of stock huh that
[959]
seems a little suspicious
[960]
maybe these items they're not actually
[962]
on sale eddo it may be the store is just
[965]
trying to trick me into thinking it they
[967]
are so if your item has maybe twenty
[970]
items in it consider having about three
[972]
or four better on sale and it has gifts
[974]
any timers and not have every item in
[977]
your store almost be out of stock the
[980]
Shopify app that I use to add the
[982]
scarcity countdown Baron with sales pop
[985]
master the app is free currently and
[987]
it's very easy to use most apps like
[989]
this cost money and so I highly
[991]
recommend checking this one out so if
[993]
you are on a budget 9 check to see if
[996]
your niche is banned on Facebook you
[1000]
know just imagine if you've gone to over
[1003]
trouble to create a store featuring
[1004]
print-on-demand bullets with erotic
[1007]
images and unlike Cydia
[1009]
did not ask the question is this a good
[1012]
idea
[1012]
I'm really glad that she did ask today
[1014]
sure because if you had not asked that
[1016]
question you would have very quickly
[1018]
discovered that Facebook's advertising
[1019]
policies will make it a nightmare for
[1022]
you if you try and promote your products
[1024]
without your ads getting shut down and
[1026]
potentially getting bad you would have
[1028]
discovered quickly that Facebook's
[1030]
advertising policies will make it a
[1031]
nightmare for you to try and promote
[1033]
your products without hitting your ads
[1035]
shut down and potentially giving you bad
[1037]
thanks to such broad policies like
[1040]
activities must not be overly suggestive
[1042]
what does that even mean I'll tell you
[1045]
what that means Facebook has a lot of
[1047]
discretion to shut down any adult
[1050]
product ads that they do not like and so
[1054]
honestly this is a niche I'd recommend
[1056]
that you avoid sedessa
[1057]
now obviously Facebook ads aren't the
[1059]
only way to create products but
[1060]
frankly they are one of the best ways
[1062]
and so it'd be quite a shame if you went
[1064]
to all this effort to create these great
[1066]
products and create this great store and
[1068]
then not be able to advertise your
[1070]
products on there so go through
[1072]
Facebook's advertising policies be sure
[1074]
to take a look at what types of niches
[1075]
and products are outright prohibited and
[1078]
what types of niches and products are
[1079]
restricted now I've certainly so
[1082]
products on the restricted list but it
[1084]
does mean you'll have a lot more
[1085]
scrutiny from Facebook so be sure to
[1087]
read the rules very carefully ten find
[1091]
your most honest friend or family member
[1093]
to get their feedback
[1095]
look Karis the blunt harsh truth it can
[1099]
be very very difficult for us to step
[1102]
back and be objective about the things
[1104]
that we create I still remember this one
[1106]
store of you I did for this
[1107]
print-on-demand store here domain a swag
[1110]
I was absolutely astonished to see that
[1112]
they thought that selling this t-shirt
[1114]
here featuring the ugliest stop sign I
[1117]
have ever seen was even remotely
[1120]
acceptable but really I shouldn't have
[1123]
been surprised because as I've talked
[1124]
before about on this channel most of us
[1127]
suffer from the psychological oddity of
[1129]
illusionary superiority essentially the
[1132]
vast majority of people think that they
[1134]
are above average which is why it is
[1136]
very important to stake out your most
[1138]
honest friend or family member that has
[1140]
a reputation for not beating around the
[1142]
bush to give you the true honest opinion
[1145]
about whether your products or your
[1147]
store look ugly even if the truth things
[1150]
a little if domain a swag had done this
[1153]
then they probably could have avoided
[1155]
this disaster thanks for watching this
[1157]
video and again if you would like to
