How is Nitrogen Used in the Oil and Gas Industry? - YouTube

Channel: Oil and Gas Overview

[5]
In today's video, we're going to take a look聽 at how nitrogen is used in oil gas operations.聽
[9]
Nitrogen is commonly used both for upstream and聽 downstream oil gas operations because it's a聽聽
[15]
neutral gas and this is very important when聽 dealing with combustible fluids and gas that聽聽
[21]
are commonly found during the oil聽 gas operations.
[25]
It also doesn't react with metals to cause corrosion like oxygen and that's the聽reason why nitrogen is used instead of just air.聽
[34]
And in addition, nitrogen is non-toxic.
[37]
Nitrogen is聽a highly compressible gas and it's usually stored under pressure and transported to the location in聽 specially designed nitrogen pumps and tankers.
[49]
Nitrogen is a very abundant gas and the聽 air we breathe is made up of about 78 percent nitrogen聽聽
[57]
and that's the reason why it's relatively easy聽and cheap to extract nitrogen from the air.
[64]
There are several ways that can be used to extract聽nitrogen from the air.
[68]
The first one is a fractional distillation and consists of cooling air and then聽 breaking it down into different gases based on聽聽
[75]
their boiling point.
[76]
The second method is using the membrane.
[81]
The air is passed through especially special fibers that can separate聽 it into different gases based on their speeds.
[86]
This is usually a slow process and the purity of the聽 nitrogen gas depends highly on the membrane used.聽
[93]
The last method to extract the nitrogen from聽 the air is called pressure swing absorption.
[99]
And it works by pushing the compressed air聽 through the specially designed equipment聽聽
[106]
with absorption material inside that absorbs聽 oxygen but lets nitrogen pass through.
[112]
Now let's take a look at the most common nitrogen聽 operations that we can encounter in the oil field.聽
[119]
First, we have a well kick-off.
[121]
Some wells have聽 a very low bottom high pressure and when the wellbore is full of heavier fluid the well might聽 stop producing because the hydrostatic pressure is聽聽
[129]
higher than bottom high pressure.
[131]
Nitrogen is often聽 used to lower the pressure of the hydrostatic column of the fluid in the wellbore by displacing the聽 heavier fluid from the well and bringing the well聽聽
[139]
back to production.
[140]
Sometimes coil tubing is used聽 to pump nitrogen to the bottom of the well and lift the wellbore fluids.
[146]
Nitrogen is also聽 used for pipeline, plant and equipment purging
[152]
to remove oxygen and various hazardous combustible聽聽
[156]
gases and chemicals.
[158]
This is often done to聽 prevent rusting during the non-operating time.
[164]
Next, we have a pipeline pigging and this involves聽 pushing a pig with nitrogen to clean the pipeline聽聽
[170]
and remove any wall buildups.
[174]
Nitrogen is also聽 used for wall drilling intervention operations.
[178]
When working on the low-pressure wells, nitrogen聽 can be pumped along with the fluid to keep the hydrostatic pressure lower than the bottom hole聽 pressure to avoid the loss of returns in the well聽聽
[188]
Nitrogen is also used for fracturing operations聽 especially when fracturing lower pressure聽聽
[194]
formations and this nitrogen is pumped to聽 energize the formation.
[199]
This helps with the fluid flow back post frack and also decreases聽 the amount of fluid required for the frack.聽
[207]
Nitrogen is also commonly used after coiled tubing operations to remove the fluid from the coil聽聽
[214]
before the coiled tubing unit can travel.
[217]
This聽decreases the weight of the coil and prevents the
[221]
the potential freezing during the winter operations聽 as well as it slows down the corrosion especially聽聽
[228]
if coil is not going to the next job聽 right away and it's stored in the shop.聽
[236]
Nitrogen can also be used for pressure聽 testing various oil field equipment聽聽
[241]
but one challenge with nitrogen is that it's聽 a gas and it means it's highly compressible so聽聽
[248]
nitrogen is not an ideal fluid for pressure testing聽 when working with higher pressures.
[249]
And oftentimes
[255]
water is used instead.
[257]
And lastly nitrogen聽 is used for enhanced oil recovery operations
[261]
and it's done by injecting nitrogen into the聽 injection well and this increases the reservoir聽聽
[268]
pressure and helps to increase the production from聽 the producing wells.
[273]
So these are some of the common nitrogen operations that聽 you might encounter in the oil field.聽聽
