Mark: Hi, my name is Dr. Mark D'Agostino,
[9]
and I'm on the admissions team at Top Test Prep.
[12]
Today we're gonna talk about what is a good a MCAT score.
[17]
The MCAT are the medical college admission tests,
[19]
is the most feared and misunderstood aspect
[24]
of the medical school admissions process.
[27]
We are going to discuss 3 steps to help to demystify the test.
[32]
We want to 1, understand what it assesses,
[37]
2, how it's scored,
[40]
and then 3, we'll talk about the "3 B's."
[45]
The Medical College Admission Test or MCAT
[49]
is a computerized exam, which is offered up to
[52]
25 times per year at Prometric test centers.
[58]
There are 4 main sections that are tested on the MCAT.
[63]
In the following order.
[65]
It's the Physical Sciences section,
[67]
which is 52 questions over 70 minutes.
[71]
The verbal reasoning section,
[73]
40 questions over 60 minutes.
[76]
And, there's a Writing Sample, which consists of
[79]
2 essays in which you are allocated
[81]
60 minutes to complete those.
[84]
And you conclude the test with
[86]
the Biological Sciences section,
[88]
which is 52 questions over 70 minutes.
[93]
Now we'll talk about how the MCAT is scored.
[97]
The Physical Sciences, the Verbal Reasoning,
[100]
and the Biological Sciences sections
[102]
are each scored numerically, between 1 and 15.
[109]
The Writing Sample is scored from J through T.
[113]
Therefore, the highest score possible is a 45-T.
[118]
Which would be a 15 in each of the sections:
[122]
Physical Sciences, Verbal Reasoning, and Biological Sciences.
[126]
As well as the maximum score on the Writing Sample.
[130]
Now, we are going to discuss some of the data.
[133]
In 2008, according to the AAMC,
[136]
there were over 75 thousand test takers.
[139]
The mean composite score, meaning when you add the score,
[144]
the Physical Sciences, Verbal Reasoning,
[146]
and Biological Sciences together was a 24.9,
[148]
with a standard deviation of about 6.4.
[153]
Which means that the average person scored
[156]
approximately an eight in each section,
[158]
and the standard deviation was between
[160]
a six and a 10 in each section.
[164]
The Writing Sample score,
[166]
the average was an O on the J to T scale.
[171]
The data for the matriculating students
[173]
is a little bit different.
[175]
In 2008, the average composite MCAT score
[179]
of those admitted to any allopathic,
[182]
which means schools that grant the MD degree.
[187]
Medical schools in the United States
[189]
was approximately a 30.
[191]
With a Writing Sample score of a P.
[194]
The average for many medical schools
[197]
is significantly higher than this.
[199]
The 3 B's are Balance, Better than the mean,
[205]
and the best score possible.
[208]
First we will discuss Balance.
[212]
A Balance score is arguably the most important
[215]
component of a good MCAT score.
[219]
For example, a perfectly balanced 36-T which
[223]
would be a 12 in all of the sections,
[226]
plus a T on the Writing Sample,
[228]
is unequivocally a great score.
[231]
However, a balanced 29-R with a
[234]
Physical Sciences score of 9, Verbal Reasoning of 10,
[240]
Biological Sciences of 10,
[243]
with a solid Writing Sample score, may be preferable
[246]
to a widely varied 33-J for example.
[251]
When we say better than the mean,
[253]
a good MCAT score generally needs to be
[256]
approximately one standard deviation,
[259]
which is about 6 points, as we discussed previously,
[262]
above the mean.
[264]
This translates to roughly a 10 in each section,
[270]
and a P or Q in the Writing Sample.
[274]
Now, when I say the best score possible,
[276]
it sounds obvious, but to assess this last factor,
[280]
you really need to be honest with yourself.
[284]
Could you teach the MCAT material to someone else?
[288]
If not, then you may not be ready to take the exam.
[293]
Many people underestimate what it takes
[296]
to succeed on the MCAT the first time.
[299]
Investing the time and investing in yourself is vital.
[303]
If you fall short, you can recalibrate,
