Best Venmo Alternatives for Teens - What Are the Options Under 18? - YouTube

Last week, my 15-year-old neighbor watched my dog聽 while I was out of town. When I asked him how I聽聽
[5]
could pay him, I was surprised when he said that I聽 only had the options of cash or I could Venmo his聽聽
[10]
mom. I figured there had to be some better options聽 for a teen to manage their money. He really wanted聽聽
[14]
a way where people could pay him for pet sitting聽 that he could also use to buy Chipotle or ice聽聽
[19]
cream when he went out with his friends. Venmo聽 is very clear that you need to be 18 or you're聽聽
[24]
gonna get kicked off if you lie about your age.聽 My neighbor even had a story about a friend who聽聽
[28]
did lie about his age to get a Venmo account,聽 someone tried to send him a hundred dollars,聽聽
[33]
and when he tried to get verified he couldn't聽 and he ended up losing the hundred dollars.聽聽
[37]
Don't mess around with lying about your age on聽 Venmo. It's not worth it. I checked out all the聽聽
[42]
other money and payment apps and unfortunately聽 they all have exactly the same rules.聽聽
[47]
So all of them say you have to be 18 or over and聽 this includes Cash app, Apple Cash, Google Pay,聽聽
[54]
Snap Cash, Facebook Payments and Paypal. There聽 is no way for anyone under 18 to use any of those聽聽
[60]
apps. Thankfully I did find one exception that is聽 intended for teenagers. The Step app works like聽聽
[67]
Venmo but it also has a Visa card that you can聽 use to spend your money. When a teenager signs聽聽
[72]
up for the Step app, if they're under 18 they聽 have to have a sponsor and that's an adult who's聽聽
[76]
responsible for their account. I actually signed聽 up my daughter and I for the Step app we're going聽聽
[80]
to check it out and I'll make a full review of聽 the Step app soon and I'll include the link here聽聽
[84]
when it's done. If you want to check out the Step聽 app for yourself, I'm going to include my referral聽聽
[89]
link down below. If you use it, we both get five聽 dollars in our accounts. So what are some of the聽聽
[93]
pros of the Step app? It's really easy to use,聽 you can send and receive money from other people,聽聽
[98]
and you also get that Visa card that you聽 can use to spend the money in your account聽聽
[101]
and the Visa card that comes with it is actually a聽 secured credit card, not a debit card. So the way聽聽
[107]
that works is you can't spend more money than is聽 in your account, so there's no interest there's no聽聽
[111]
debt involved in it, but whenever you use it,聽 you're actually building up a credit history,聽聽
[116]
which can be a really good thing for a teenager.聽 There are definitely some negatives to the Step聽聽
[120]
app though. It does require other people to聽 have that app to be able to send you money.聽聽
[125]
Probably the people that he's pet sitting for聽 are not gonna have the Step app already and聽聽
[129]
they might not be too excited about signing up聽 for a new app. As a teenager you're also limited聽聽
[134]
on the ways you can get money into the app. You聽 can link a debit card, a bank account, or other聽聽
[139]
apps like Venmo and Paypal with it, but someone聽 under 18 probably doesn't have those things.聽聽
[144]
Unfortunately you can't deposit checks or cash聽 into the Step account. There is one other app that聽聽
[150]
might be a good option for my teenage neighbor and聽 that's Zelle. Now if you download the Zelle app聽聽
[155]
directly, it says you have to be over 18 but most聽 people use Zelle through their mobile banking app聽聽
[161]
and that is dictated by the rules of the聽 bank itself. Now in the US, the rules vary聽聽
[165]
a little bit state to state, but in general you聽 do have to be 18 years old to have a bank account聽聽
[170]
but there are a few banks that allow teenagers to聽 have accounts that are joint with an adult. Sometimes the聽聽
[175]
adult on the account has to be the legal parent聽 or guardian of the child but sometimes it can聽聽
[180]
be any responsible adult. I'm working on another聽 video about best bank accounts for teenagers but聽聽
[186]
I did find three good ones that had bank accounts聽 for ages 13 and up that also allowed the use of聽聽
[192]
Zelle for ages 13 and up and that is Capital One聽 Money account, the Chase Bank High School Checking聽聽
[198]
Account and the Wells Fargo Clear Access Account.聽 I'll go a lot more into detail about the pros and聽聽
[203]
cons of these different accounts in my other video聽 but these could be some really good options for a聽聽
[208]
teenager who's looking for a way to transfer聽 money back and forth with Zelle. All right,聽聽
[211]
so let's talk about some advantages of using聽 Zelle. Well, many people already have it because聽聽
[215]
it's in their mobile banking app even if they聽 don't realize it's already there for them. Another聽聽
[219]
advantage to using Zelle is that to get it, you'd聽 have to get a regular bank account which comes聽聽
[224]
with lots of other advantages too. You're probably聽 going to get a debit card, mobile banking,聽聽
[228]
access to ATMs and all those other good banking聽 services. Some disadvantages to using Zelle. Well聽聽
[234]
it's not as commonly used as Venmo but you can't聽 use Venmo if you're under 18. If you're signing聽聽
[239]
up for a bank account, there could also be some聽 fees associated with maintaining that bank account聽聽
[243]
and if you use the Step app there are zero fees聽 whatsoever with it. So for my teen with his pet聽聽
[248]
sitting business, I think either of these options聽 could work although I don't think either one is聽聽
[253]
completely perfect. A bank account with Zelle聽 would allow most people to be able to pay him聽聽
[257]
because they probably already have access to it聽 but a Step account could also be really useful.聽聽
[263]
He could use it to build credit and it could be an聽 easy way for him to send money back and forth with聽聽
[267]
other teenagers. Another nice advantage of the聽 Step app is that his mom could link her Venmo with聽聽
[272]
it so if one of his pet sitting clients pays her聽 Venmo she can make a quick transfer from her Venmo聽聽
[277]
into his Step account and he could use his card聽 to spend that money at Chipotle. When my complete聽聽
[282]
review of the Step app is up, I'm gonna include the聽 link right here so definitely check that out next.
