Cost of Living in LONDON 馃嚞馃嚙 | What I Spend In A Month 2021 - YouTube
Channel: Girl vs Globe
[0]
where do i even start with london it's one of聽
those places that completely draw you in people聽聽
[5]
from all over the world myself very much included聽
come here hoping to soak up all the culture聽聽
[11]
the history and the beauty but all of it comes聽
with a hefty price tag and today i want to tell聽聽
[18]
you all about how much the privilege of living聽
in london really costs whether you've come here聽聽
[23]
hoping to move to the british capital or you're聽
just curious no shame in that you have come to the聽聽
[28]
right place i'm gonna start breaking it down by聽
talking about my rent which is the biggest expense聽聽
[34]
that you're going to have when i moved back to聽
london one and a half years ago i did what most聽聽
[38]
people my age tend to do i went onto a website聽
called spare room where you can find flatmates聽聽
[43]
and different houses and flats and i did just that聽
i found three housemates and together we rented a聽聽
[50]
place in the london bar of southwark which is in聽
southeast london and we rented a four bed house聽聽
[56]
we are in zone 2 which means we're quite close to聽
central london we have the overground nearby and聽聽
[61]
loads of space now we're no longer straight out聽
of uni so we were happy to splash out a little聽聽
[67]
bit more than we might have been in the past so聽
my rent comes to 800 pounds a month to give you聽聽
[73]
a bit of an idea what different kind of money聽
brackets can get you i've pulled a few examples聽聽
[79]
this first flat is in zone two so relatively聽
central and you can get this room for 475 pounds聽聽
[85]
a month with bills included next up is this more聽
spacious two bed house in stratford for 750. it's聽聽
[92]
a bit further out but it's an up-and-coming area聽
very well connected it has the olympic park nearby聽聽
[97]
and the westfield shopping center this third one聽
is a studio in pekum it's in zone 2 and close to聽聽
[103]
an overground station but you can see that living聽
alone is expensive at 1 000 pounds per month and聽聽
[109]
the place is really quite tiny final example聽
here's what paying 1841 pounds per month could聽聽
[115]
get you it's a really beautiful modern house but聽
considering how much you're paying you don't get聽聽
[120]
a huge amount of space so that's it 800 pounds on聽
rent bearing in mind that you can pay a lot less聽聽
[126]
and definitely definitely a lot more next up let's聽
move on to bills and utilities number one you've聽聽
[132]
got water which comes to about 10 pounds a month聽
then you've got gas on electricity that's about 10聽聽
[137]
yeah 10 pounds a month as well and then finally聽
you've got internet for us we pay 44 pounds a聽聽
[144]
month for fiber optic virgin internet this next聽
expense is very uk and london specific and that聽聽
[151]
is council tax council tax is money you pay聽
to your local council i know right in order聽聽
[157]
to provide vital services like taking out the bins聽
and funding libraries keeping the streets nice and聽聽
[164]
tidy on the government website if you type in your聽
address you will be able to see how much you pay聽聽
[169]
and also how much other people on your street聽
pay and this depends on the value of the property聽聽
[174]
another very british custom is paying for a tv聽
license anyone that owns a tv in the entire land聽聽
[180]
has to pay this fee and the fee comes 259 pounds聽
a year which i think is pretty steep and finally聽聽
[188]
the one thing that we pay for here at home that is聽
a bit of a luxury we have a cleaner that comes in聽聽
[194]
every fortnight although that sounds like a really聽
indulgent thing it comes to 25 pounds per person聽聽
[199]
per month so to me that is totally worth it but聽
there are financial benefits to living in the uk聽聽
[205]
as well chief among them the nhs you don't have聽
to pay for private health care on a monthly basis聽聽
[211]
the state takes care of it for you now there are聽
things that are taken things being money here that聽聽
[218]
are taken out of your paycheck every month but聽
once that is taken care of you don't even get the聽聽
[223]
money so you don't feel like you're partying with聽
it that's it you do have to pay extra for dentist聽聽
[229]
appointments and stuff like that but on the whole聽
it is very affordable very well managed and we聽聽
[234]
love the nhs here all those expenses come to 95聽
pounds a month and don't worry we are just getting聽聽
[240]
started because our next category is subscriptions聽
none of these are directly related to living in聽聽
[245]
london but they are the kinds of expenses that聽
people with a lifestyle that's similar to mine聽聽
[250]
tend to have number one i paid 10 pounds to voxy聽
they're my phone provider i get i don't even know聽聽
[257]
six gigabytes of internet or something like聽
that it's a it's a pretty sweet deal next up聽聽
[261]
we've got lightroom now this is quite a lot of聽
money i paid 10 pounds for it on a monthly basis聽聽
[266]
but i use it to edit my photos from my instagram聽
which by the way you should totally follow聽聽
[271]
epidemic sound again this is very me specific it聽
is a big library of royalty-free music which i use聽聽
[279]
on my video you probably beautiful isn't it worth聽
every penny next up we've got email hosting again聽聽
[288]
very specific to me i pay four pounds 60 for this聽
it's called the google suite next up we've got two聽聽
[294]
wildly unnecessary ones but a lot of us probably聽
have them and that is a a netflix subscription聽聽
[300]
which in the uk costs nine pounds 99 and then a聽
spotify subscription which costs 8.99 these prices聽聽
[308]
by the way vary based on where you are so for聽
example my parents in the czech republic pay a lot聽聽
[314]
less money than me um what i'm saying here is if聽
you have a card and an address in another country聽聽
[321]
maybe think about it okay i'm not saying i'm just聽
saying three more left i've got website hosting聽聽
[327]
which costs me seven pounds 20 every month again聽
a very me expense then we've got icloud which um i聽聽
[336]
just paid to boost my storage to 200 gigabytes and聽
that cost me two pounds 49 and finally something聽聽
[344]
that for me is like a really nice to have that i聽
could drop if i had to is online language classes聽聽
[351]
i take classes on a website called italki it is聽
super useful i've mentioned it in basically all my聽聽
[357]
language videos i have left a discount link in the聽
description below if you want to check it out one聽聽
[362]
more that i should mention that i'm not paying for聽
currently but i hopefully will once we're out of聽聽
[367]
lockdown is the gym so i used to go to a local gym聽
that is actually extremely affordable and it costs聽聽
[375]
22.99 which is kind of wild especially in聽
london my subscriptions come to 85 and 27 pence聽聽
[384]
every month which frankly isn't great so maybe聽
doing this video is going to be really good for聽聽
[390]
me maybe it's going to force me to reevaluate my聽
budget in fact i already am and i feel terrible聽聽
[395]
our next category is travel and this has obviously聽
been deeply impacted by all the lockdowns we've聽聽
[400]
had over the past year but on a regular basis聽
and the life i hope will return to someday i聽聽
[407]
would buy something called a monthly travel card i聽
typically get a zone one two three travel card and聽聽
[412]
that costs 167 pounds and 10 pounds so it is not聽
cheap and if you do want to lessen the burden of聽聽
[421]
traveling on public transport one thing you can do聽
is stick with buses now it will require a lot more聽聽
[427]
time and a lot more patience because they tend to聽
have a fair few delays but here is the math if you聽聽
[433]
travel by bus only you will pay four pounds and聽
65 pence per day which adds up to 87 pounds and 60聽聽
[439]
pence per month now if you have a car we're moving聽
on to the opposite side of the spectrum that will聽聽
[444]
cost you a lot of money and i'm not just talking聽
about the upkeep and the insurance and the gas i'm聽聽
[451]
talking about physically going into central london聽
we have something called the congestion charge聽聽
[456]
and it adds up to 15 pounds per day our next聽
category is a big one food now i say it's big聽聽
[463]
not because it necessarily needs to cost a lot of聽
money but because there's so much variability for聽聽
[468]
example some people will be very content just聽
getting the basics cooking at home and that's聽聽
[473]
it and that way you can save a ton of money but聽
if you're uh like me for example sadly you might聽聽
[482]
end up spending a lot of money on this i have put聽
together all of my shopping for the past month the聽聽
[489]
total sum was 122 pounds and 52 pence and that's聽
just on groceries i then proceeded to add up my聽聽
[496]
takeaways and obviously currently i'm not eating聽
out in restaurants but if we weren't in lockdown聽聽
[501]
i suspect i would be spending even more because聽
when you go out to a restaurant you might get a聽聽
[506]
bottle of wine etc we all know how it is i spent聽
87 pounds and 70 pence on takeaways last month聽聽
[515]
and i should point out here that it was february聽
which is a much shorter month so i don't even聽聽
[522]
that brings us to a grand total of 210 pounds聽
and 22 pence for food which yeah is not great but聽聽
[529]
it is what it is when in lockdown sometimes you聽
just get to treat yourself and um i do want to聽聽
[534]
point out here that obviously your bill for food聽
can be just so much lower it could literally be聽聽
[540]
half that if you really really stuck to a budget聽
okay we're gonna talk about salaries and how聽聽
[545]
affordable london really is vis-a-vis how much聽
you make in a bit but before that i want to finish聽聽
[551]
with my last category which is just other they're聽
these random expenses that you have on a monthly聽聽
[556]
basis they can be clothes they can be i don't聽
know medicine or skin care the grand total was聽聽
[564]
76 pounds and 44 pence for my other spending okay聽
and now the moment we've all been waiting for聽聽
[570]
the grand total i don't really want a drum roll聽
for this but let's have one for dramatic effect聽聽
[576]
my hands are sweating i mean this is going to be聽
terrible the grand total is it's 1434 pounds and聽聽
[585]
one pence oh dear yeah now it's a standalone聽
figure that looks scary but it doesn't really聽聽
[593]
mean much we need to compare it to a base salary聽
and in order to do that i have prepared three聽聽
[598]
different salary levels to compare the sums number聽
one i want to start with the average london salary聽聽
[605]
glasgow thinks that the average salary in london聽
is 40 732 pounds let's have a look at how much聽聽
[611]
that leaves us with on a monthly basis after tax聽
i just typed the numbers in here and here's our聽聽
[618]
figure 2 612 pounds every month after tax and now聽
for the fun bit let's subtract my monthly spending聽聽
[625]
from this figure what we are left with is 1178聽
pounds which frankly is pretty promising that to聽聽
[632]
me doesn't look bad at all you still have plenty聽
left over for savings which i think is something聽聽
[637]
that's very very important you always want to聽
have an emergency fund in case the world goes聽聽
[642]
bonkers like it just did but there are many many聽
many people in london working for minimum wage the聽聽
[649]
london living wage at the moment is 10 pounds 85聽
pence let's say we times that by 35 which can be聽聽
[655]
the average work week for somebody who is working聽
on that wage we get to a grand total of 19 747聽聽
[664]
per year this annual salary will leave us with 142聽
pounds per month after tax let's take my spending聽聽
[671]
figure and subtract it and look what we're left聽
with we're left with a deficit of 12 pounds and聽聽
[677]
three pence now of course if that was your annual聽
salary you would adjust your spending habits聽聽
[682]
and you would cut out a lot of the luxuries聽
however let's bear in mind the fact that i聽聽
[686]
am single and i don't have children there are so聽
many single parents out there who do have to make聽聽
[693]
this money stretch not just for themselves but聽
for other people they are supporting so yes it聽聽
[700]
can be difficult to live in london for our final聽
salary scenario let's look at a different source聽聽
[705]
here they listed the average salary for women聽
aged 22 to 29 which is the bracket i fall into聽聽
[711]
based on this scenario we would go home with 1704聽
pounds every month after tax and when we subtract聽聽
[718]
my spending we are left with 269 pounds and 97聽
pence there are a lot of people in london in their聽聽
[725]
late 20s early 30s that are covering their bills聽
every month but struggling to save money so that聽聽
[731]
is definitely something to bear in mind if you聽
are thinking of moving to london another thing聽聽
[736]
to bear in mind is that yes renting can seem聽
affordable but buying is near impossible for聽聽
[742]
anyone our age which makes us very different from聽
the previous generation and there you have it this聽聽
[747]
is how much living in london costs me on a monthly聽
basis obviously these figures will vary month to聽聽
[752]
month if you have any other questions about living聽
in london do let me know and i might make a video聽聽
[757]
answering them thanks for watching and i put聽
out new videos every friday so see you then
