Palantir (PLTR) Post IPO Update and Analysis on the Price of the Stock - YouTube
Channel: Healthy, Wealthy, and Wise
[0]
palantir's quiet period ends and today i
[2]
take a look at how the company's been
[4]
trading since going public
[5]
what the analysts are predicting and i
[7]
share my own thoughts as to what factors
[8]
i think
[9]
are and will drive the stock price stay
[14]
tuned
[17]
[Music]
[20]
welcome to healthy wealthy and wise the
[21]
channel that has evolved to talk about
[23]
all the big
[23]
and not so big companies going public
[25]
whether it's by traditional ipo
[27]
a spac or even a direct listing today
[30]
we're revisiting palantir
[31]
a company that we've talked a lot about
[33]
last month as they finally made the move
[34]
to go public after about 17 years of
[36]
being private
[37]
but before we start i want to say a big
[39]
thank you to all the subscribers who
[41]
have stuck with me as we continue to
[42]
grow the channel together
[44]
and for anyone new here my name is kevin
[46]
and i want to welcome you to the channel
[47]
for the first time
[49]

[50]
you consider joining our community by
[52]
subscribing
[53]
after all it's free and it'll make sure
[54]
you don't miss any information on the
[56]
company that could turn into the next
[57]
big
[58]
thing and as always especially on a
[60]
video like this
[61]
please know that i'm not a financial
[63]
advisor and while my videos are meant to
[64]
be informative
[65]
they should not be seen as a
[66]
recommendation for you to take any
[68]
action on the companies covered
[69]
you should always do your own research
[71]
or consult with your own financial
[72]
advisor when making any investment
[74]
decision
[75]
with that said we talked a lot about
[76]
palantir last month
[78]
so if you're looking for information on
[79]
the background of the company and
[80]
details of its direct listing filing
[82]
we're not going to rehash that here
[84]
today but you can check out a playlist
[86]
of videos i made that has all that
[87]
information i'll link it for you in the
[89]
description
[90]
today let's start off talking about
[92]
where it's traded since its debut and
[93]
why i think it's trading there
[95]
first of all a lot of people got caught
[97]
up on the reference point that palantir
[98]
cited as seven dollars and twenty five
[100]
cents
[100]
and noted how much higher palantir
[102]
traded once it opened as i believe i
[104]
said in the live stream that we had
[105]
after our first day of trading
[107]
that reference price didn't mean
[108]
anything to me unlike a traditional ipo
[110]
where we know the institutional
[111]
investors set an ipo price which is
[113]
actually what they pay for each share
[115]
with a direct listing there is no
[117]
institutional investors or banks pricing
[118]
the shares
[119]
so right off the bat that price didn't
[121]
have any substance behind it
[122]
again because no underwriters actually
[124]
set that number or bought shares at that
[126]
price
[127]
now the week before the trading began
[129]
there was a lot of speculation that it
[130]
could have traded at 11.50
[132]
the highest price that it traded at on
[134]
the private markets in august
[136]
however that price in august was hit
[137]
only after word was out that the company
[139]
was actually going public
[141]
prior to that news the private shares
[143]
were trading at a volume weighted
[144]
average price of five dollars and 34
[146]
cents in july
[147]
and then in august the month where the
[148]
filing went public the average price
[150]
jumped to 7.31
[152]
although it had actually traded as low
[154]
as 4.17
[156]
in that same month which was a low for
[157]
2020. so even when you consider the bump
[160]
that going public will do for the share
[161]
price
[162]
going up to 11.50 seemed high and would
[164]
set up the direct listing for being
[165]
deemed a disappointment
[167]
by moving the price down to five 7.25
[169]
the company almost assured a positive
[171]
response because again
[172]
considering where it traded privately
[174]
and even adding a bump for going public
[176]
there was no doubt that it could beat
[177]
that reference price and there would be
[179]
no negative repercussion by setting that
[181]
price low because
[182]
no one was actually buying shares at
[183]
that price like what would actually
[184]
happen a traditional ipo
[186]
where you could leave money on the table
[187]
with a low price being set
[189]
so why is this important because as i
[191]
also said in the live stream after day
[193]
one
[193]
i felt where the stock actually traded
[195]
was in the ballpark of where it probably
[196]
should
[197]
and palutear got a lot of positive
[198]
publicity for blowing past the reference
[200]
price
[201]
i remember getting a question on if it
[203]
was overpriced at that time and i
[204]
remember saying that it could be priced
[206]
a little high
[207]
but that i really thought it was
[208]
definitely in a range i would be
[209]
comfortable with
[210]
unlike some ipo such as snowflakes where
[212]
i just couldn't justify the price it was
[214]
at
[214]
after its first day of trading now after
[217]
pounds here opened at ten dollars and
[218]
spiked to just over eleven dollars on
[220]
that first day
[221]
the stock has settled in the trading
[222]
range between nine and ten dollars since
[224]
and i know that a lot of people's
[225]
expectations would be that the stock
[226]
would trade higher
[228]
so we're going to talk about that in a
[229]
minute but first i want to mention that
[230]
today was the end of palantir's quiet
[232]
period
[232]
and i think what you saw today is one of
[234]
the reasons that i cover them in our
[235]
weekly ipo this week episodes
[238]
in a day where the entire market was
[239]
under pressure palantir was able to
[241]
weather the storm and end with a five
[243]
percent gain
[244]
powered in the new market research
[245]
released by analysts knowing a company's
[248]
quiet period can help you trade the
[249]
stock better
[250]
if only in the short term i'm going to
[252]
give you a lot of things to look for
[253]
when it comes to evaluating palantir
[255]
share price
[256]
so hang in there with me but i did want
[258]
to tell you that today
[259]
there were at least five analysts that
[261]
came out with price targets
[263]
one at ten dollars two at eleven dollars
[265]
and two at thirteen dollars
[267]
when you add up the targets and average
[268]
them out you get an average target price
[270]
at eleven dollars and sixty cents from
[272]
people who are actually paid to make
[274]
these predictions
[275]
so while on the surface the targets
[276]
don't look super attractive
[278]
after you look at the closing share
[279]
price last friday before the analyst
[281]
targets came out
[282]
you see an expected rise or upside of
[284]
the stock price by 22 percent
[287]
now if you listen to a lot of fans of
[288]
pilentire who write and make videos
[290]
about them
[290]
they're expecting the price to get to
[292]
the upper teens or to the mid 20
[293]
range relatively soon and some even say
[296]
much higher than that
[297]
now as i always say i can't see the
[299]
future and so my predictions are no
[300]
better than anyone else's
[302]
but based on what i know about the
[303]
company and the environment we're in i
[305]
would be really surprised to see the
[306]
stock jump into the 20
[308]
range in the near future and not because
[310]
the analysts of price targets are lower
[311]
than that
[312]
but because of a lot of underlying
[313]
factors that i've considered so to
[315]
finish up the video
[316]
i'm going to go over the factors that i
[317]
see impacting the company and by how
[319]
much
[320]
when it comes to where the stock is
[321]
trading and where it can go
[323]
first i'll tell you the things that in
[324]
my opinion won't significantly impact
[326]
the price
[327]
beginning with probably the biggest
[328]
issue that kept coming up before the
[330]
direct listing
[330]
was the company governance structure
[333]
while there's no question that the
[334]
structure is not friendly to shareholder
[336]
power
[336]
or that the owners can sell shares and
[338]
still keep significant control
[340]
which is somewhat appalling i just don't
[342]
see this being a factor for most of us
[344]
retail investors
[346]
i know i have a lot of interest and
[347]
personal experience in the stock market
[349]
and yet i don't think that i'm so smart
[350]
that i have a better grasp on how to
[352]
change the company in a way that grows
[353]
it better than the founders
[355]
so i'm going to knock corporate coverage
[356]
from being a major factor in the price
[358]
right off the bat
[359]
the second factor i think is overrated
[360]
influencing share price is the
[362]
uncertainty over the result of the
[363]
election
[364]
and as many of you know we don't talk
[366]
politics on here but from a pricing
[368]
consideration it is a factor due to two
[370]
popular perceptions
[371]
one is that the companies that contract
[373]
with the government national defense do
[374]
better with republican administrations
[376]
and two that the markets do better
[378]
overall when there is a republican
[380]
president
[380]
to the second point data consistently
[383]
shows that which party holds the white
[384]
house doesn't have a major bearing on
[386]
the markets
[387]
and historically even though republicans
[389]
are considered more friendly to business
[390]
the markets have actually performed
[392]
higher during the years that the
[393]
president is the democrat
[395]
at the end of the day so many more
[396]
factors affect the markets in general
[398]
i just discount the impact of which
[400]
party holds the white house
[401]
and to the first point about companies
[403]
showing business with the government in
[404]
areas of national security
[406]
i don't think a data analytics company
[408]
is at risk for a huge combined
[409]
administration
[410]
as i've said before could their work
[412]
with ice be impacted
[414]
yes but it could also just change in
[415]
what they're tasked to do in regards to
[417]
immigration
[418]
but business could also pick up with
[419]
analyzing and tracking virus data in the
[421]
current pandemic
[422]
environment and palantir was still very
[424]
much showing business with the
[425]
government in the obama binding years
[427]
with reports of them assisting and
[428]
finding bin laden as well as uncovering
[430]
fraud
[431]
and if you go with the perception that
[433]
democrats spend more i just don't see a
[435]
company that has proven to be helpful to
[436]
the government
[437]
as one that would significantly be
[438]
affected by a change in the
[439]
administration
[440]
do i think that some people might be
[442]
concerned with investing in palantir
[443]
because of the election
[445]
i do but again in my opinion i just
[447]
don't see this being a major factor long
[449]
term either
[450]
way on who wins the white house now
[452]
let's get to some factors that hold more
[453]
weight for me
[454]
one is financials at the end of the day
[457]
the financials will
[458]
almost always supersede everything else
[460]
there are two big numbers to look at
[462]
one is that the company is expecting to
[464]
reach revenue of over one billion
[465]
dollars for the fiscal year
[467]
and the company looks to be on track or
[468]
at least close for the first six months
[470]
of the year
[471]
revenue is coming in at over 481 million
[473]
dollars and for the trailing 12-month
[475]
period
[476]
revenue is coming in at just over 900
[478]
million dollars hitting that billion
[479]
dollar number has to happen for palantir
[481]
and it looks like it will
[483]
the other issue and maybe the bigger one
[485]
is to see if they can start cutting
[486]
their net losses down
[488]
remember the company has been around for
[489]
17 years without ever having shown a
[492]
profit
[492]
and i also see that sentiment weighing
[494]
on where the stock is trading
[496]
but this also looks to be on track when
[497]
looking at net losses from continuing
[499]
operations
[500]
for fiscal year 2019 the company
[502]
reported a loss of 580 million dollars
[505]
for the trailing 12 month period the
[507]
company is showing a loss down to just
[508]
over 460 million dollars
[510]
and even better for the first half of
[512]
the year the net loss was down to just
[514]
under 165 million dollars
[516]
so the financials are trending positive
[518]
but still the price is where it's at
[520]
so in this case financials aren't
[522]
superseding all
[523]
so i have to ask what else could
[525]
investors be looking for to drive the
[526]
price up
[528]
one of those things i believe is
[529]
concerns over their customer base
[531]
from their filing they report to having
[533]
just 125 total customers with revenue
[536]
highly dependent on three of them
[537]
with those three customers representing
[539]
almost a third of the total revenue
[541]
obviously this is a risk factor to the
[543]
price if they were to lose any one of
[544]
those customers
[546]
i also know that what i would like to
[547]
see is more growth on the commercial
[548]
side
[549]
i like where they sit on the government
[550]
part of their business but i really feel
[552]
their opportunities on the commercial
[554]
side
[554]
and i'm looking to see more contracts
[555]
obtained there they really need to show
[557]
a growth in that customer base
[559]
so this is one thing that i think is
[561]
holding this price back
[562]
moving up my list of what's impacting
[564]
the prices concerns about the company's
[565]
valuation dropping over the years
[567]
in 2015 the company was valued in the 20
[570]
billion range
[571]
this year prior to the direct listing
[573]
the company was valued at about half of
[575]
that on the private markets when using
[576]
the share prices we talked about earlier
[578]
in the video
[579]
the question i've asked myself is even
[581]
after having considered how going public
[583]
affects the valuation
[584]
what have they done to deserve a much
[586]
higher valuation than where they were
[588]
and right now i haven't seen anything
[589]
from them that does that when i consider
[591]
what the private shares were trading for
[593]
and saw it spike to around 11
[594]
based on this filing to go public come
[596]
out all the information we talked about
[598]
was priced in it at that time as well
[601]
so while i think the current price is
[602]
within a reasonable range to drive the
[604]
price higher
[604]
i need to see more more customers
[607]
beating revenue estimates and lowering
[609]
losses
[610]
that would help me feel comfortable in
[611]
seeing the upside but what i feel is the
[613]
biggest factor affecting the share price
[615]
right now
[615]
is the uniqueness of a palleter did with
[617]
their direct listing
[618]
that was locking up shares well typical
[621]
for traditional ipos
[622]
this is certainly not the norm for
[623]
direct listings as of right now
[626]
eighty percent of the existing shares
[627]
aren't able to be traded
[629]
and while they follow the lead of the
[630]
traditional ipos on locking up shares
[632]
they diverted on the length of when
[633]
those lockups usually expire
[635]
for ipos most expire at 180 days however
[639]
for paluntier
[640]
it will be less than that by
[641]
approximately two months for them the
[643]
shares will become available on the
[644]
third business day following the release
[646]
of fiscal year 2020 earnings
[648]
and just so you know the fiscal year for
[649]
palantir ends on december 31st
[651]
so when this year's earnings come out a
[653]
few weeks later we could see more
[655]
volatility in the share price when those
[656]
80 percent of shares are finally able to
[657]
hit the market
[659]
and with potentially a glut of shares
[660]
hitting the market as insiders who've
[662]
been waiting to capture their gains from
[663]
when they were buying shares as low as
[665]
417
[665]
in august to me this is the top
[667]
consideration i have in the near term
[669]
for downside pressure on the share price
[671]
so that's what i got for you and
[672]
palantir what do you think
[674]
do you agree with my assessment on the
[675]
stock or not let me know in the comments
