Motherboard BIOS Settings For Mining | The Basics - YouTube

Channel: unknown

[0]
hey everyone and welcome back to聽 another mining chamber video in聽聽
[3]
today's video we are going to go over your聽 bio settings and everything you need to know聽聽
[7]
when it comes to your bios so let's go ahead聽 and get into the video right after the intro
[22]
setting up the proper settings for your bios is聽 an important part of building your mining rig聽聽
[27]
now most of the time if you have a mining聽 dedicated motherboard you don't have to change any聽聽
[31]
settings everything is automatically set properly聽 for you but in some scenarios you'll have to open聽聽
[36]
up your bios settings and troubleshoot from there聽 if you're running into any issues that can lead to聽聽
[40]
your mining rig not running properly or some聽 gpus not showing up on your mining software聽聽
[45]
now the first thing i want to mention is all the聽 bios are not the same so you might have different聽聽
[49]
settings you might have different wording for聽 your settings but ultimately the options will be聽聽
[54]
very very similar so if i go over something in聽 this video and you don't have exactly the same聽聽
[58]
words just try to look for something similar聽 to it and now let's say worst case scenario聽聽
[63]
you've accidentally put a wrong settings on聽 your bios and then you can't post anymore聽聽
[67]
you can always do a cmos reset and that's聽 basically resetting your bios to default聽聽
[72]
settings so this is something really good to know聽 because it's usually the fix for a lot of problems聽聽
[77]
if your motherboard is just not posting at all and聽 you're not getting any display and it's not a cpu聽聽
[82]
compatibility issues or any hardware issues then聽 a cmos reset will most likely help you out to do a聽聽
[88]
cmos reset it's very simple all you need to do is聽 you want to unplug your power supply from the wall聽聽
[93]
make sure there is no power coming to your rig at聽 all and then from there you just want to take out聽聽
[98]
that little battery on your motherboard there is a聽 little trigger next to it where you push it in and聽聽
[102]
then the battery will just pop out and after the聽 battery pops out just put it to the side for now聽聽
[107]
and then you want to hold the power button聽 while the rig is off for 30 to 60 seconds聽聽
[111]
i usually just hold it for 60 seconds to make sure聽 that it successfully reseted your bios settings聽聽
[116]
and then after that you can go ahead and put聽 the battery back in and then you can plug in聽聽
[119]
your power supply back into the wall now with聽 having that done it basically reseted the memory聽聽
[124]
for your bios settings on the motherboard and聽 then everything is back to stock so now that's聽聽
[128]
enough about the cmos reset now i hope you guys聽 understand what it is and know when to use it聽聽
[133]
now we can go ahead and move on to the settings聽 so the settings will be in three different parts聽聽
[138]
first you have the essential settings these are聽 the ones that you definitely want to keep an聽聽
[142]
eye on and make sure you have them set properly聽 the second ones will be optional settings that can聽聽
[146]
benefit you if you choose to use them and then we聽 also have the usb booting settings and that's for聽聽
[151]
people that want to use a usb for their operating聽 system whether it's ibos or any other mining聽聽
[156]
linux operating system and that section will be聽 especially helpful if you're also planning on聽聽
[161]
running another hard drive with it or an ssd with聽 a different operating system for example for your聽聽
[166]
personal computer so in this video i'm using my聽 msi z270 gaming m5 motherboard as an example for聽聽
[173]
the bios settings now like i mentioned earlier聽 you might have some different wordings and you聽聽
[178]
might have a fully different layout for your menu聽 but don't worry it should be the same concept now聽聽
[183]
to get into your bios you want to figure out聽 what's your bios hotkey you can find that in聽聽
[187]
your motherboard's manual or you can just look up聽 your motherboard's name and then hotkey for bios聽聽
[192]
usually it's the delete or escape key so in my聽 case it was the delete key and all you have to do聽聽
[197]
is the moment you turn on your rig start spamming聽 your delete key just keep hitting on it until you聽聽
[203]
see that menu pop up and then once that menu pops聽 up you're good to go there is also another menu聽聽
[208]
called the boot menu and if you get that boot menu聽 instead of the bios menu you might find an option聽聽
[213]
there that says enter setup so just navigate to聽 the enter setup and then you'll be good to go聽聽
[217]
so the first settings i want to look for is the聽 pcie gen speed as well as the mining mode for my聽聽
[223]
motherboard and i was able to find those in聽 the pcie subsystem settings so after i open聽聽
[228]
up my pcie subsystem settings you guys can聽 see here i have the pcie graphics card max聽聽
[233]
link speed so this is where you select the gen聽 speed for your graphic cards to be running on聽聽
[238]
now generally it's usually on auto but if you're聽 planning on running more than two graphic cards聽聽
[242]
i would usually recommend setting it on gen 2聽 and that should work most of the time and if you聽聽
[246]
still have troubles if you're trying to run for聽 example 13 cards you can try to set it on gen 1.聽聽
[251]
now the reason for the settings is because your聽 graphic cards don't need to run on the full gen聽聽
[256]
speed they can run on a lower gen and they'll be聽 completely fine for mining now i'm not sure if it聽聽
[261]
will affect your gaming performance but you can聽 feel free to try it and then change it whenever聽聽
[265]
you want so here in this motherboard i have聽 two places where i have to set them to gen 2.聽聽
[270]
you might have more than two places but just聽 look around for any places that have auto and聽聽
[274]
gen 1 and gen 2 and 3 and then just change them to聽 gen 2. there is also the pcie latency timer option聽聽
[281]
and usually you don't have to change that one at聽 all having it as default is completely fine but聽聽
[286]
in some scenarios if you're having troubles with聽 your gpus and for example when you're running your聽聽
[290]
mining software as soon as you make the dac file聽 it starts crashing or acting weird then this is聽聽
[295]
one of the settings that you might want to go back聽 to and try to change it ideally you can put it聽聽
[300]
up to 94 or higher and what that setting does is聽 just controls how long each pcie device can hold聽聽
[306]
the bus before another one takes over so like i聽 mentioned you don't need to focus on the settings聽聽
[310]
unless you're running into issues so just leave it聽 as default for now and come back to it if it's the聽聽
[315]
last option you have and then after that setting聽 you also have the mining mode or 4g decoding聽聽
[321]
sometimes they are two different options but in聽 this scenario they're both together so mining mode聽聽
[326]
and 4g decoding needs to be on if you're planning聽 on mining with more than just one gpu and even if聽聽
[332]
you're mining with just one gpu just turn them on聽 it won't affect your motherboard or your gaming聽聽
[336]
performance in any bad way so just have that聽 setting on and then you should be good to go聽聽
[341]
in some scenarios when you're booting your mining聽 rig and you just see a pitch black screen and you聽聽
[345]
don't even see the bios it can sometimes be due聽 to the 4g decoding to being turned off so in that聽聽
[351]
case you want to unplug all your gpus except one聽 and then boot into your bios turn on 4g decoding聽聽
[357]
or mining mode and then plug in the rest of the聽 gpus after you turn your rig off make sure when聽聽
[362]
you're unplugging and plugging off gpus your rig聽 is completely off and handle everything with care聽聽
[368]
now the last essential settings is the one that聽 deals with your display so usually you want your聽聽
[373]
display to come out of your motherboard rather聽 than the gpus it makes everything a lot easier you聽聽
[378]
can just troubleshoot your gpus freely and unplug聽 them and plug them back in without having to worry聽聽
[383]
about the display so not every motherboard and cpu聽 has this capability you first need to make sure聽聽
[388]
you have integrated graphics and to do that you聽 just want to look at your motherboard if you have聽聽
[392]
any display output such as hdmi or dvi then that聽 means you most likely have integrated graphics聽聽
[399]
so the next step you want to do is you want to聽 go through your bios settings and then you want聽聽
[402]
to find your graphics settings and set that to igd聽 which also stands for integrated graphics now peg聽聽
[409]
stands for pcie graphics and that's for the gpus聽 so it's better to just have that resource come out聽聽
[415]
of your motherboard and cpu rather than from your聽 gpu and it's especially useful when you're trying聽聽
[420]
to bios mod and all that stuff as well so now that聽 wraps it up for the essential settings and now we聽聽
[426]
can go ahead and move on to the optional settings聽 the first setting we have in the optional settings聽聽
[431]
is the ac power so what this option does here is聽 a good example for it let's say you live somewhere聽聽
[436]
where the power goes out very frequently so if聽 the power goes out your mining rig will turn off聽聽
[442]
so having this option set as on or power on or聽 last state based on what bios you're using what聽聽
[447]
it will do is the moment you get power again the聽 rig will turn automatically right on so the moment聽聽
[453]
your motherboard gets power who will turn on聽 without you having to turn it on manually now if聽聽
[458]
you decide to shut down your rig manually it won't聽 turn on right away so you don't need to worry聽聽
[462]
about that but this can be pretty useful if you聽 just want to plug your rig it turns on right away聽聽
[467]
and if you're worried of power loss and then you聽 just want it to turn back on right away then this聽聽
[471]
is a good option to keep on one of the best tricks聽 i found with this option was using smart plugs聽聽
[476]
especially if you're mining on hive os you can聽 just have a smart plug connected to the rig and聽聽
[481]
then you can turn the rig off and on just through聽 your phone by turning off the smart plug and then聽聽
[486]
turning it back on in a way it will resemble your聽 electricity turning off and then it's turning back聽聽
[491]
on and that can be useful if your rig is stuck聽 and on hive os it's showing offline then you can聽聽
[496]
just try to reboot it that way and then it might聽 work completely fine so other than the ac power聽聽
[501]
there's other multiple options that people decide聽 to turn off for example your audio controller on聽聽
[507]
your motherboard and what that does it just turns聽 off the actual physical ports on your motherboard聽聽
[512]
and i don't know exactly why people do it i think聽 it's to reduce the power usage but at the end聽聽
[517]
of the day it won't take that much you can feel聽 free to turn off anything that's not being used聽聽
[522]
so for example your audio controllers all these聽 additional usb ports and a bunch of these sata聽聽
[527]
ports as well but again i don't think it will make聽 that much of a difference so you can feel free to聽聽
[532]
leave it on it's not a problem at all now in the聽 optional settings there is also flashing your聽聽
[537]
motherboard's bios and usually you don't have to聽 flash your motherboard's bios but if you do have聽聽
[543]
a really outdated motherboard bios or you did all聽 the troubleshooting steps and you're still having聽聽
[548]
troubles then you can try to resort to flashing聽 your motherboard's bios all you need to do is just聽聽
[553]
go to your motherboard support page find the聽 latest bios put it on your usb stick and then聽聽
[558]
come to the bios and then choose the flashing聽 utility if you need more information on that聽聽
[563]
every motherboard has a specific guide to it to do聽 it on their manual so feel free to check that out聽聽
[568]
so now that wraps up the optional settings now we聽 can talk about the usb booting settings so these聽聽
[573]
settings are only if you're planning on using聽 a usb stick to boot into it so if you have hive聽聽
[578]
os flashed on a usb stick or any other mining聽 operating system then you want to check out this聽聽
[583]
section of the video if not then you can feel free聽 to skip to the outro now the first thing you want聽聽
[588]
to look for is the boot mode and in the boot mode聽 you want to make sure you have legacy and uefi聽聽
[593]
set sometimes you'll have this differently for聽 example you might have a completely different聽聽
[597]
option that will say legacy support or csm support聽 and you just want to make sure you enable that聽聽
[602]
and in some scenarios you will also have an option聽 that says usb boot support so you also want to聽聽
[607]
enable that as well and then after that you also聽 have your boot order priority in your boot order聽聽
[612]
priority it's basically what your mining rig聽 will look for when it's booting in so if you聽聽
[617]
put your first option as a usb stick for hive os聽 your mining rig will always go to that one first聽聽
[622]
and if it doesn't find it it will go to the second聽 option so this is very useful if you're doing dual聽聽
[626]
booting and you have windows ssd as well as a hive聽 os on a usb stick so like that you can tell your聽聽
[632]
rig to boot into which one you want first and then聽 from there you move forward this topic is heavily聽聽
[637]
documented on the internet if you have any further聽 questions just look up your motherboard's model聽聽
[642]
and then the question you have and i'm sure you聽 will find the answer so now that covers the bias聽聽
[646]
settings i hope you guys have now a better idea聽 of what to do when you're in the bios and what聽聽
[650]
to change when you're in there as well so let's聽 go ahead and wrap up the video the next video聽聽
[655]
that will be coming up will be which operating聽 system should you be using which will be the聽聽
[659]
best next step from this video and if you haven't聽 built your mining rig yet then i highly recommend聽聽
[664]
checking out the mining rig build guide which is聽 the video that came out before this one the link聽聽
[669]
for it will be in the descriptions below now that聽 wraps up the video thank you guys for watching聽聽
[673]
this video if you have any questions leave them in聽 the comments below and i'm curious to know if you聽聽
[678]
had any settings that you needed to change to get聽 your mining grid going please let me know in the聽聽
[682]
comments as well i'm sure there's a lot of things聽 i could have covered but i just didn't come across聽聽
[687]
and if you like this video please leave a thumbs聽 up and if you're not subscribed make sure to聽聽
