[Music]
[14]
hey guys it's justine and i'm here at
[15]
google i o and i had so much fun
[16]
watching the presentation and now i'm
[18]
gonna head over and chat with sundar the
[19]
ceo of google he just left the stage so
[21]
let's go have a chat
[23]
[Music]
[29]
[Applause]
[30]
[Music]
[33]
thank you so much for sitting down and
[35]
i'm just so excited this is actually my
[37]
first i o oh all welcome and you you
[39]
timed it well we're back in person in
[41]
shoreline did you enjoy it i did did you
[43]
enjoy it yeah of course i loved you know
[45]
it took me a while to get used to having
[47]
audience back and the reactions back and
[49]
so i i had to go through an adjustment i
[51]
think but i love being here like in the
[53]
auditorium too it was just like feeling
[54]
that energy i feel like everyone missed
[56]
that and i i hope it continues i think
[59]
it's time for people to come back and
[61]
get on with our lives i felt like
[62]
watching the presentation it really felt
[64]
like google was trying to be additive to
[67]
technology and not something that's like
[68]
distracting in your life so how do you
[70]
feel that that kind of carries through
[71]
towards google's mission no it is you
[73]
know if you if you go back to search
[75]
search was always about trying to get
[77]
you the answer as quickly as possible
[80]
and and not
[82]
the focus was that and so in some ways i
[85]
think a lot of what you saw today
[87]
is people are living their lives doing
[89]
what they are trying to do
[91]
we want to
[92]
find those moments where if they need
[94]
help be helpful as quickly and
[97]
efficiently as possible so yeah that
[98]
affects how we think about it and it's
[100]
incredible with your whole career at
[101]
google too and you've been there for so
[103]
long so what's it been like to really
[104]
see the entire tech industry just change
[106]
like right before your eyes and even
[108]
having like a huge part in that wow i
[110]
mean it is i mean
[112]
who would have thought the internet
[113]
would reach where it is today and uh you
[115]
know i couldn't have quite foreseen it
[117]
but you know early on i realized that
[119]
finally you have a medium which is going
[120]
to you know pretty much touch everyone
[122]
in the world eventually and so it's been
[124]
thrilling to be part of that ride and
[127]
being at google gives you a chance to do
[129]
that at scale and impact a lot of people
[131]
so
[132]
but i think look the the great thing
[134]
about technology is
[135]
for for people who are young and coming
[137]
into it
[138]
the next decade the next two decades are
[140]
going to have as much evolution in as
[142]
many new things as what we you know i've
[144]
seen in my
[146]
last two decades so i think that's
[147]
that's the great thing about technology
[149]
is there any key moment that you're like
[150]
that was the most meaningful thing that
[152]
you felt that had like a huge impact
[154]
towards the end when it all comes
[156]
together you know when we're investing
[158]
in ai and trying to help people as we're
[160]
testing the prototype and giving it to
[162]
people who could be you know either deaf
[165]
or hard of hearing or didn't understand
[166]
a language you know that's where you see
[168]
how it can all come together and touch
[171]
people's lives and so i think that's the
[173]
potential of technology the kind of
[175]
thing which makes me get up in the
[176]
morning and uh coming to work so that's
[178]
what i would say yeah and i feel like
[179]
now even just with the internet and
[180]
being able to touch that many lives is
[183]
so incredible and i think accessibility
[185]
is so important i mean how do you guys
[187]
kind of go through that whole process of
[189]
deciding what is something that you need
[190]
to include for accessibility and kind of
[193]
just carry that through you know
[195]
we've deeply cared about it in our
[196]
mission and so you know if anything
[200]
we're constantly across every products
[202]
be getting to everyone in the world uh
[204]
trying to make it as affordable as
[206]
possible making sure we are thinking
[208]
through deeply for people with
[209]
disabilities uh and and working to make
[212]
sure the products work for them all that
[213]
there's a lot of work still left to do
[215]
one thing i would say is ai offers new
[218]
opportunities to do it in a in a way we
[220]
couldn't have solved it before and so
[222]
that's what why when you look at things
[224]
like translation or transcription or all
[226]
that i think offers us to support these
[228]
groups better than ever before you guys
[230]
have talked so much about ai and it's
[232]
weird and kind of also interesting when
[234]
i talk to my non-tech friends their kind
[236]
of perception of ai like you think of
[238]
what you see in these big high budget
[241]
movies like robots running around
[242]
everywhere and like that's not the
[244]
actual reality of it so do you want to
[245]
talk a little bit about like what ai
[247]
actually is and how you guys kind of
[248]
implement it in all of your devices so
[250]
coming in many ways the kind of ai we
[252]
are talking about is as humans like you
[254]
and i are using language fluently we're
[257]
looking at each other we have context
[260]
all this is very very hard for computers
[262]
to do
[263]
so we are trying to make progress and
[265]
make computers be a bit smarter
[268]
and and using ai to make those things
[270]
better but it offers promise in a
[272]
different way because the same ai can be
[274]
an expert on many topics so it could be
[276]
like you're talking to a thousand
[278]
different experts on any topic right
[280]
that's the potential so you can imagine
[282]
a kid in the future
[284]
being able to learn on any topic
[286]
regardless of where they're growing up
[288]
what access they have so that's the
[289]
potential we see but when we speak about
[292]
ai a lot of it is about how do we use
[295]
that to bring more knowledge to more
[297]
people and so that's how we think about
[299]
it i love that too because learning i
[301]
learned almost everything that i know
[303]
now
[304]
from google and watching youtube videos
[306]
and i feel like a lot of kids learn in
[307]
different ways and a lot of times
[308]
classrooms aren't equipped for that so
[310]
the fact that you guys are building that
[311]
out and also making it accessible is
[314]
just i think that's it really is life
[315]
changing yeah i mean i i mean i i wish i
[318]
had youtube when i was growing up i've
[320]
learned on so many topics
[322]
by particularly even through the
[324]
pandemic just youtube was a place i
[326]
would go learn from uh creators like you
[328]
and so you know hopefully this is all
[330]
part of the journey in uh making it
[332]
easier for people by the way ai also one
[335]
one feature we launched today was to
[337]
automatically create chapters and
[339]
youtube videos you know uh yeah the
[342]
crowd goes wild i'm going to put in a
[344]
sound effect here
[346]
that's amazing too because you're trying
[347]
to find that information quickly and the
[349]
fact that those chapters are automatic i
[350]
cannot wait to try it yeah we're still
[352]
talking about ai and because google is
[354]
such a huge company you guys can
[355]
literally do anything so i feel like you
[357]
guys have a responsibility to kind of
[359]
set those principles and i know you
[360]
talked a little bit about that do you
[362]
want to expand a little more on that you
[363]
know i mean obviously it's a you know
[366]
profound technology and both will have
[368]
useful things can be misused can have
[370]
harmful effects
[372]
so at a from a ground up we have to
[375]
think about it right and so we we
[377]
publicly stated ai principles and it has
[379]
seven core areas you see some of that
[382]
work today when we talked about monk
[384]
scale or what we did in our cameras last
[386]
year across a range of skin tones being
[389]
able to capture that well on camera is
[391]
an example of the kind of responsible ai
[394]
work work we are doing so we are
[396]
thinking it through across everything we
[397]
do i love the demonstration that you
[399]
guys did with lambda2 and that kind of
[401]
conversational technology is really just
[403]
it's so impressive the fact that you
[405]
could make those lists like which one
[406]
was your favorite oh yeah you know
[408]
played around with it so much what's
[411]
stunning for me is how it breaks down
[413]
every topic and then it makes you think
[415]
about things which you wouldn't have
[416]
thought of and you know i think i really
[419]
tried planning a party and seeing all
[421]
the stuff and even for something you
[423]
think you know it surprises you there's
[426]
a creativity to all this and you know
[428]
you can imagine you're anywhere like a
[430]
planet made of ice cream and you can
[431]
think through that so you can imagine
[433]
being an author and you're writing
[434]
something and you can play with it to
[436]
get inspiration and so that is the power
[438]
of what if if he can get all this to
[440]
work well that's the power power ahead
[442]
another thing is i love your kind of
[444]
initial story of kind of you know
[445]
working with chrome and that was really
[448]
impactful for me because i feel like a
[450]
lot of my career has been people telling
[451]
me i shouldn't do this or i shouldn't do
[452]
that and when you have sort of that
[454]
conviction that something is something
[456]
and it can be something like that's
[458]
really was touching for me so like do
[460]
you have any advice for any young
[462]
entrepreneurs or creators or developers
[463]
who are kind of getting started and how
[465]
to kind of combat hurdles that's good
[467]
look i think it's important to remember
[470]
you're going to have setbacks it doesn't
[472]
go exactly the way you some sometimes it
[475]
does but that's rare
[476]
for most people kind of meanders and
[479]
you know it takes longer than you think
[481]
it is
[482]
i think working with people who you
[483]
think are very good i think that's
[485]
important
[486]
working something which
[488]
kind of clicks inside you you feel it if
[490]
you work on something you like
[492]
you will feel it inside and i think
[494]
that's important to try and find it if
[496]
you can and so if you do that and you're
[498]
doing your best that's what's in your
[500]
control and as i said earlier to young
[502]
entrepreneurs there's no better time to
[504]
be an entrepreneur like i would ignore
[506]
what's happening in the short term like
[508]
there is so much opportunity ahead over
[510]
the next 10 years or 20 years i think to
[513]
creators there you know there's no
[514]
better time to be a creator and so you
[516]
know that's how i would think about it
[517]
yeah i guess one last question i guess
[519]
the future of tech i mean it's all
[520]
moving so quickly so what is your kind
[523]
of big picture vision for the next five
[525]
to ten years from our standpoint you
[527]
know we we are working on you know given
[529]
our goal is to help give access to
[531]
knowledge
[532]
we think computing is going to evolve
[534]
dramatically over the next 10 years you
[536]
know we will evolve beyond phones and
[538]
you saw some hints at the end of what we
[540]
think that world will be and so building
[543]
that out and putting it in people's
[544]
hands and is something we are super
[546]
excited by that's so awesome well thank
[547]
you so much for chatting and thank you
[549]
to my audience for watching i know
[550]
they're going to be so excited subscribe
[553]
and click on the bell yes like and
[556]
comment on the video
[559]
this is the best day ever
[561]
can we get a selfie of course oh my gosh
[563]
this is incredible all right here we go
[566]
all right
[567]
[Music]
[570]
awesome all right thank you thank you so
[572]
nice to meet you trying to keep up pace
[574]
with your selfie skills
[576]
[Music]
[577]
so this was both of our first google
[579]
items yes which was so much fun and you
[582]
were a veteran yes uh it's 17 18 19. oh
[585]
wow yeah and he did not tell us that it
[587]
was cold it was very cold i'm sorry it's
[589]
freezing i had a lot of fun yeah i can't
[591]
wait to see your interview i can't wait
[593]
yeah because we couldn't hear anyone
[595]
yeah yeah so guys make sure you go check
[596]
out both of their videos i'll put links
[598]
in the description and i think that's a
[599]
wrap
[601]
i gotta go to the airport now
[604]
you're leaving tomorrow yeah i'm good
[606]
bye
[607]
