Tesla Truck vs Ford F-150 Cost of Ownership: Is the Tesla a Value Buy? - YouTube

Channel: Ben Sullins

[0]
the Tesla cyber truck is here and it is
[2]
wild as you obviously have already seen
[5]
but now I think it's time to take a
[7]
deeper look and see how it stacks up
[9]
from a price comparison to the most
[11]
popular truck in the United States the
[13]
Ford f-150 let's go
[16]
[Music]
[19]
Elon set up the cyber truck unveil is
[22]
something that was going to be different
[24]
looking check have crazy specs check and
[27]
be cheaper than the f-150 well let's see
[30]
about that we buy a lot of trucks here
[32]
in the United States and we have for a
[35]
very long time and the most popular one
[38]
by far is the Ford f-series now the
[41]
f-series encompasses many different
[42]
models but let's just pick the most
[45]
popular one and see how it actually
[47]
stacks up price-wise so let's just go
[50]
here and see oh my god how many options
[53]
are there well since I don't know what
[55]
the difference is between these I'm
[56]
gonna go to edmunds.com
[58]
and just see what they have to say okay
[60]
so it looks like the Lariat option which
[62]
isn't the lowest but isn't near the
[64]
highest is kind of the best value
[66]
according to edmunds.com so let's price
[69]
it out we need to just pick the Lariat
[71]
model then add the super crew cab which
[73]
seats six to match what the cyber truck
[75]
has choose the 4x4 option in the
[78]
powertrain and then we can find the
[81]
price now on the cyber truck side there
[82]
are three different options and to kind
[85]
of be with what is probably going to be
[87]
the most popular one I think we should
[88]
stick with the dual motor option which
[90]
is a price of forty nine thousand nine
[92]
hundred dollars now you could choose
[93]
different options obviously and as you
[96]
saw on the Ford side there are hundreds
[98]
of choices with all kinds of different
[99]
options you can add on the Tesla side
[101]
it's just a lot simpler and more
[103]
straightforward but I wanted to pick two
[106]
that we're very similar kind of
[107]
middle-of-the-road vehicles that one
[110]
from Ford was recommended by Edmunds so
[112]
it's not something I cherry-pick to be
[114]
better price-wise here and on the Tesla
[116]
side I picked the one that Elon reported
[118]
is the most popular one in terms of the
[120]
reservations that have already been made
[122]
so trying to be as fair as possible here
[124]
just picking apples to apples in terms
[125]
of two trucks that likely will be head
[128]
to head when people are considering
[129]
which one to buy now when it comes to
[131]
actually figuring out the cost
[133]
these thankfully edmunds.com has been
[135]
doing this for decades and we can
[136]
basically just take the figures that
[137]
they've given us and plug them in and if
[140]
you're not familiar with the categories
[141]
we have depreciation taxes and fees
[143]
insurance maintenance repairs financing
[146]
costs and fuel so when you're talking
[148]
TCO the true cost of ownership those are
[151]
the categories you're looking at you're
[152]
not really just looking at the initial
[153]
price although that does play a factor
[155]
in the overall cost so let's head over
[157]
to the TCO page for the tales of cyber
[160]
truck wait what how come where where's
[164]
the come on Edmunds what is going on
[166]
Edmunds get it together okay fine let's
[169]
calculate it ourselves
[170]
and in order to do that we need to make
[171]
some assumptions because obviously these
[173]
vehicles are not on the road yet and
[175]
there isn't much data to really go off
[177]
but I want to try to be as fair as
[179]
possible again when comparing these two
[181]
vehicles first when it comes to
[183]
depreciation and what I did here was I
[184]
took the percent of depreciation
[186]
compared to the original sales price the
[188]
MSRP and applied that to the tesla car
[192]
so that way it's essentially the same
[193]
percentage drop over the five-year
[195]
period I also did this for taxes and
[197]
fees and for the financing costs
[200]
I took the insurance from the forward
[202]
and applied it directly assuming they
[204]
would be apples to apples here of course
[206]
a lot of what goes into insurance costs
[208]
is based on your provider based on your
[210]
own situation so it really is impossible
[212]
to to have a real number here without
[214]
you getting a quote yourself so that's
[217]
why I just decided to copy it from one
[219]
to the other
[219]
assuming that they'll be relatively
[221]
similar in price now for me that's what
[223]
I did since Tesla doesn't actually
[225]
require any maintenance the thing that
[227]
they're doing now is after two years
[229]
you're gonna come in and get an
[230]
inspection which runs about 200 bucks
[232]
and then if there's anything that needs
[234]
to be fixed often there is not you'll
[236]
then pay for that out of pocket so
[238]
essentially it's zero dollars and
[240]
maintenance other than this $200
[242]
inspection so that's what I put for
[243]
maintenance costs on the repair side
[245]
again there's not really anything here
[247]
other than tires
[248]
I listed tires at a thousand bucks who
[250]
knows what the actual cost may be but
[252]
that seems kind of higher than your
[254]
normal but not crazy expensive versions
[256]
of tires that you may get for a vehicle
[258]
like this now let's talk about fuel
[260]
because this is where things diverge
[261]
pretty dramatically from one to the
[263]
other
[263]
on the Edmond site they use a 15,000
[266]
miles
[266]
per year estimate for their fuel costs
[268]
so what I did was I started there
[270]
assuming you're gonna drive 15,000 miles
[272]
per year
[272]
I used a miles per gallon for the fort
[274]
of 18 miles per gallon and on the tells
[277]
of cyber truck side I used something
[279]
called watt hours per mile this is
[281]
essentially how much energy or
[282]
electricity does it take to go one mile
[284]
so very similar in concept to miles per
[287]
gallon here and for this I used 500 now
[289]
that's a pretty high number the Model X
[291]
from Tesla gets around 450 based on the
[294]
data I've seen so I'm assuming this is
[296]
going to be more than that but also a
[297]
lot of the aerodynamic people out there
[299]
posting videos or analysis of the show
[302]
that it's going to be really great
[303]
Elon is even tweeting that this could
[305]
have some really tremendous aerodynamic
[307]
properties meaning that it's going to be
[309]
more fuel-efficient than it may seem
[310]
just from the size of the vehicle so I'm
[313]
trying to be conservative again giving
[315]
them a watt hours per mile of 500 now to
[317]
calculate the cost of gas I chose two
[319]
different locations it's California and
[321]
Texas so California I looked at the
[324]
average gas price and I got this from
[325]
gas buddy.com and currently it is $3.82
[329]
so if you drive 15,000 miles per year
[332]
you get 18 miles per gallon and then it
[334]
costs three dollars and 82 cents per
[336]
gallon to fill up the annual cost in
[339]
California of fueling your f-150 will be
[341]
three thousand one hundred and eighty
[343]
three dollars and 33 cents now in Texas
[346]
it's a bit cheaper the average price of
[347]
gas as the time of this recording was
[349]
two dollars and twenty four cents so
[351]
that means doing that same math that the
[352]
annual cost in Texas was going to be one
[354]
thousand eight hundred sixty six dollars
[356]
and 67 cents so already you can see that
[359]
just depending on where you live there's
[361]
gonna be a big difference in the cost of
[363]
owning these vehicles so for electricity
[365]
it's kind of the same deal where in
[366]
California the price is vastly different
[368]
than it is in Texas and even beyond the
[370]
prices I'm using what you see are
[372]
variability within local municipalities
[375]
so for example in California you can
[377]
have time-of-use rating which gives you
[378]
an even cheaper rate to charge your car
[380]
in this kind of super off-peak zone but
[383]
what I wanted to do again was be
[385]
conservative and try to be fair and so
[386]
in California you're looking at twenty
[388]
six cents per kilowatt hour
[389]
which multiplied times the fifteen
[392]
thousand miles per year and the five
[394]
hundred watt hours per mile gives you an
[395]
annual cost in California of $1,950 and
[399]
then
[399]
Texas where the average price of
[401]
electricity is around nine cents a
[402]
kilowatt hour you're looking at six
[404]
hundred and seventy five dollars total
[406]
for the year all right so we've got all
[407]
our numbers calculated now it's time to
[409]
add them up and see who wins but before
[410]
we do that I want you to try and guess
[413]
I'm guessing a lot of you will pick the
[416]
cyber truck and you're probably going to
[418]
be right but go ahead and head down to
[420]
the comments section leave a comment as
[422]
to which one you think is gonna win and
[424]
by how much then after the video plays
[426]
here come back and see if you were right
[429]
so adding it all up in California what
[431]
we have is a total for the Ford f-150
[434]
across five years true cost of ownership
[436]
of seventy two thousand four hundred
[438]
fifty nine dollars details of cyber
[440]
truck in California across five years
[442]
fifty three thousand three hundred
[444]
seventy nine dollars a difference of
[446]
nineteen thousand eighty dollars so
[448]
that's a big big difference as you may
[452]
have guessed let me know if you did now
[454]
in Texas it's a little bit different
[455]
story where the true cost of ownership
[457]
across five years for the Ford f-150 is
[460]
sixty-five thousand four hundred sixty
[462]
seven dollars and the tails of cyber
[464]
truck is forty six thousand six hundred
[466]
ten dollars with a difference between
[468]
those of eighteen thousand eight hundred
[470]
fifty eight dollars so very similar
[472]
between California and Texas now again I
[474]
used twenty six cents per kilowatt-hour
[476]
for the cost of electricity here in
[479]
California however when I charge at home
[482]
which is where ninety percent of the
[484]
time you would be charging your cyber
[485]
truck I pay the same as the people in
[487]
Texas two of nine cents a kilowatt hours
[489]
so again the savings would be even
[491]
greater
[492]
so overall yeah the Tesla cyber truck is
[495]
objectively cheaper to own and operate
[498]
across five years but I don't know if
[501]
that's really enough to make people
[503]
switch the design is wild it's
[507]
futuristic it's definitely not for
[509]
everyone and despite people not really
[512]
using their trucks as trucks in fact
[515]
there's a lot of data out there showing
[516]
that most people don't even tow anything
[518]
at least once a year and barely use the
[520]
bed so trucks aren't necessarily bought
[523]
for things like towing capacity unless
[525]
you actually need them in which case the
[528]
cyber truck probably isn't a good option
[530]
anyway it's considering charging instead
[531]
of a different video and different
[533]
discuss
[533]
but I really don't know if cost of
[535]
ownership is a strong enough argument
[537]
for your Ford f-150 people that have had
[539]
them for generations to switch but it is
[542]
encouraging especially considering
[545]
250,000 people have already dropped a
[547]
hundred bucks for a reservation how many
[550]
of those will actually convert into
[552]
owners I don't know I am one that
[555]
definitely will and there are many
[556]
others like me but overall I'm not
[558]
really convinced that this is going to
[559]
make a big dent in the millions of
[561]
trucks that are sold each year it might
[563]
eat some of the other market segments
[565]
but from a truck standpoint I'm just I'm
[568]
not convinced yet that it's really gonna
[569]
be the game changer the next has the
[572]
truck however probably will be that's it
[575]
for this one I hope you guys enjoyed it
[576]
yes I am in a new location here I do
[578]
have a new studio
[579]
things are getting still set up so we'll
[582]
try to have some different looks for you
[583]
coming soon but other than that let me
[586]
know what you think in the comments and
[587]
don't forget when you free the data your
[588]
mind will follow I'll see you guys back
[589]
here in the next one hey I hope you
[594]
liked the video and I hope that it
[596]
enlightened you a little bit about maybe
[597]
some of the other comments that people
[599]
have been making about the cost of these
[600]
things because that's really what we
[601]
like to do here on the show is look at
[604]
the numbers and have them decide for us
[606]
not us form opinions and then go into it
[608]
with that preconceived notion of course
[610]
we're human and that's always difficult
[611]
to do but if you'd like to learn more
