Planet Gemini Review: A Tiny Computer With Big Ideas - YouTube
Channel: unknown
[0]
executive decision is a 1996 thriller
[3]
mostly famous for killing off Steven
[5]
Seagal about 20 minutes in spoiler alert
[9]
I guess now if you're a gadget nerd you
[11]
might also remember it as the film where
[14]
the bad guys tried to set up us the bomb
[15]
with a Sion PDA well thanks to a company
[20]
called planet computers that pocket
[22]
computer has been reinvented for 2018
[24]
and everyone that isn't raising a
[26]
skeptical eyebrow is actually lining up
[29]
to buy one let's find out why in the mr.
[32]
mobile planet gemini review normally
[40]
when I review a product the question I'm
[42]
trying to answer is whether it's worth
[44]
the asking price but the Gemini was
[47]
crowdfunded and successfully almost
[49]
6,000 people pulled over 2 million
[52]
dollars to bring it to life so the
[54]
people who want it have already put
[56]
their wallets behind it and my question
[59]
then becomes how well does it live up to
[61]
its promises and what can be improved if
[64]
there's a version 2 first let's pin down
[67]
what the gemini is lots of people asked
[70]
me if it's a smartphone during my review
[72]
period and the technical answer is yes
[74]
my unit is a 4G device running Android
[76]
with the ability to make voice calls the
[79]
quality of those calls is fine
[80]
I had no complaints about reception on
[82]
t-mobile and it's actually not as
[83]
awkward to talk on as you might think a
[85]
nice touch is that there's no such thing
[87]
as right side up or upside down each end
[89]
has both earpiece and microphone you
[91]
don't need to open it to dial you can
[93]
use the smart button on the side to use
[95]
Google assistant to do it but as you've
[97]
probably noticed there's no external
[98]
display nor of volume control there's
[102]
also no primary camera now you can buy a
[106]
$50 camera module that plugs in next to
[108]
the SIM tray and accessories like a
[110]
SmartWatch and a headset do help make
[112]
this a better phone but it wasn't
[115]
designed to be that it's more accurate
[117]
to think of this as a tiny laptop which
[120]
is why there's also a Wi-Fi only version
[122]
planet says Gemini is built for creators
[125]
who rely on a full keyboard but also
[127]
want something they can slip in their
[129]
pocket
[130]
the resulting clamshell clicks closed
[132]
with a crisp magnetic clack and when it
[135]
folds open it deploys a clever hinge for
[137]
tabletop typing side firing speakers
[140]
produce thin but loud sound while two
[142]
USB C port PSICOM adage charging and
[144]
data transfer the design is really
[147]
excellent the execution of that design
[152]
is a bit wanting though a device built
[154]
around its keyboard needs the keyboard
[157]
to be the best thing about it and while
[160]
this production version is way better
[161]
than the one I first tried at CES it
[163]
still needs another round of revisions
[165]
before I can recommend it three of the
[167]
keys on my device regularly stick
[170]
halfway between up and down it doesn't
[172]
affect their input but it does affect
[173]
how typing feels also some keys are
[176]
slightly misaligned and the spacebar is
[178]
finicky these issues have also been
[181]
reported on production units in the wild
[183]
my biggest complaint there's no
[186]
backlight planet just couldn't fit one
[189]
in while preserving the feel it was
[190]
going for defenders maintained that the
[193]
Gemini is built for touch typists who
[195]
shouldn't need to look at the keys
[196]
anyway fair point but this is not a
[199]
standard layout there's a function
[202]
button that controls key doubling or
[203]
tripling and until you get used to which
[206]
keys are where it's very challenging to
[209]
use on a dark overnight flight which is
[211]
where I first put it to the test once
[214]
you get used to it the size does make it
[216]
a perfect flying companion when you want
[218]
to write without busting out a huge
[220]
laptop it looks too small I know like
[223]
you'd have to peck out letters finger by
[224]
finger but that wasn't the case for me
[226]
after two or three days also there are
[229]
lots of keyboard shortcuts for
[230]
brightness media controls clipboard
[233]
hotkeys even alt tab for app switching
[235]
press the planet button and you get a
[237]
pop up dock that you can fill with your
[239]
favorite apps
[241]
now I know you're thinking that so let's
[244]
ask the question doesn't a keyboard
[246]
accessory do all this just as well I
[249]
mean why not just slap a journo or
[251]
something onto your phone instead well I
[254]
figured the best folks to ask about that
[255]
were the people who bought the Gemini
[257]
and the responses carried similar themes
[259]
lack of satisfaction with touchscreen
[262]
only typing the inconvenience of having
[264]
to carry and charge a separate keyboard
[266]
and a distrust or dislike of platforms
[269]
like iOS and Android
[271]
the Gemini ships with an unlocked
[273]
bootloader and it's been shown running
[275]
Linux Debian Ubuntu even sailfish
[278]
instead of being locked down and
[280]
optimized for consumption it's wide open
[283]
and built for creation planet has also
[286]
released the source code for the
[287]
bootloader and kernel so theoretically
[288]
the Gemini could eventually run many
[290]
more operating systems including booting
[293]
from the microSD slot or a USB drive
[295]
support for those other platforms is
[298]
nascent at this stage though so Android
[300]
is the default that ships with the
[301]
gemini let's wrap it up with some test
[305]
notes the LCD is bright enough for all
[307]
conditions I tested and it's big enough
[309]
to usefully run two apps side by side
[312]
unfortunately if there is an oleophobic
[314]
coating it's not a very good one keep a
[316]
chamois around to get the grease off the
[319]
LEDs on the cover have a wide array of
[321]
colors and animations right now it just
[323]
blinks red when you have a notification
[325]
but the planet says customization is
[327]
coming soon it's version 7.1.1 and
[330]
prospects for an Oreo update are
[332]
uncertain thanks to the media tech
[334]
chipset which while brawny enough to
[336]
make for speedy software isn't as power
[338]
efficient as some other processors are
[340]
the battery always got me through a day
[343]
of heavy use but I was kind of hoping
[345]
for two days and there are the usual
[348]
first gen hardware problems in addition
[351]
to the keyboard inconsistency this
[353]
silicon strip on my device was loosening
[356]
after only two weeks the webcam is nice
[359]
to have for video calls but it's got
[360]
pretty poor quality and on the 4G models
[364]
the SIM slot is micro instead of nano
[366]
which means you'll probably have to get
[367]
an adapter for its part planet says it's
[370]
working even on the current production
[371]
run to tighten quality control and fix
[374]
the key
[375]
she's given how much the Gemini improved
[377]
just from January to February I expect
[380]
the company will be able to fix some of
[382]
these teething problems be sure to
[384]
subscribe to the Mister mobile on
[385]
youtube so you don't miss the re review
[387]
when it comes along down the road if
[391]
your question is whether this should be
[393]
your next smartphone the answer is
[395]
almost certainly no and if you're happy
[398]
with your tablet or small laptop then
[400]
this isn't for you either
[401]
in fact the Gemini isn't for most folks
[405]
but that's kind of the beauty of it
[407]
right I mean in 2018 when mobile devices
[410]
all look and feel very similar enough
[413]
people got together and said hey we want
[415]
this very specific product for this very
[418]
narrow use case and it got built that's
[422]
the kind of success story that
[423]
characterized the tech world in the
[424]
mid-to-late 90s and the Gemini does its
[427]
progenitors from the same era proud
[429]
planets next trick to stretch the
[433]
analogy who will have to be avoiding a
[435]
repeat of the bubble burst by delivering
[438]
something tighter and more consistent
[440]
for the second generation this video was
