Robin Williams was one of the most beloved聽 comedians of all time. He entertained generations聽聽
[5]
of audiences on stage and in the movies through聽 a body of award-winning work that span more聽聽
[9]
than four decades, and his big personality was聽 dwarfed only by the size of his generous heart.聽聽
[14]
So it was as shocking as it was heartbreaking when聽 Williams was found dead by suicide on August 11,聽聽
[19]
2014, in his home in Tiburon, California.
[22]
"We are thinking of, we're thinking of聽聽
[25]
Robin's family. We're thinking about everybody聽 he touched around the world throughout his life."
[32]
He had been diagnosed with Parkinson's disease聽 before his passing, but his autopsy showed that聽聽
[37]
was just part of the story - and part of a life聽 story that began in Chicago on July 21, 1951.
[42]
By the late 1970s, Williams's over-the-top聽 stand-up comedy routine caught the eye of聽聽
[47]
"Happy Days" producer Garry Marshall.聽 Marshall was impressed with the young聽聽
[51]
comic and in 1978 he cast Williams to聽 play a goofy alien from the planet Ork,聽聽
[56]
known as Mork, on "Happy Days." Mork proved so聽 popular that ABC spun the character off onto聽聽
[61]
his own show that very same year. Running聽 from September 1978 through May of 1981,聽聽
[67]
"Mork and Mindy" catapulted Williams聽 into household name notoriety.
[70]
While his career was taking off, however, the聽 pressure was proving too great for Williams.聽聽
[75]
According to the website The Recovery Village,聽聽
[77]
Williams began using cocaine and alcohol聽 to help manage his overnight success.
[81]
There are also various rumors and stories聽 when it comes to Williams' drug abuse.聽聽
[86]
In fact, It's widely known that the actor was聽 partying with fellow comedian John Belushi聽聽
[90]
the night the "Saturday Night Live" actor聽 died from an overdose of cocaine and heroin.
[95]
The death of his friend, coupled聽 with the birth of his son,聽聽
[97]
convinced Williams to start dealing with his聽 addictions. Over the next several decades,聽聽
[101]
Williams reportedly managed his addictions聽 to varying degrees of success. In 2003,聽聽
[107]
while on set in Alaska filming the movie "The聽 Big White," addiction reared its ugly head once聽聽
[111]
again in Williams' life. The comedian talked about聽 the experience with The Guardian in 2010, saying,
[116]
"I was in a small town where聽 it's not the edge of the world,聽聽
[119]
but you can see it from there, and then I thought:聽聽
[121]
drinking. I just thought, hey, maybe drinking聽 will help. Because I felt alone and afraid."
[125]
According to The Hollywood Reporter,聽 after an ultimatum from his son,聽聽
[129]
Williams checked himself into an addiction聽 treatment center in August of 2006.聽聽
[133]
To the general public, things seemed to be better.
[136]
But on August 11, 2014, Rebecca Spencer,聽 Williams' long-time personal assistant,聽聽
[142]
found the actor dead in his bedroom. The聽 effects from a recent diagnosis of Parkinson's,聽聽
[146]
a disease that attacks the central nervous system聽 causing tremors, stiffness, and slurred speech,聽聽
[151]
were beginning to settle in, though he聽 reportedly had doubts about the diagnosis.
[155]
According to Vanity Fair, the disease was聽 affecting his memory the most, causing him to have聽聽
[160]
difficulty remembering his lines. And while the聽 consensus for William's suicide initially seemed聽聽
[164]
to point toward depression, Susan Williams, Robin聽 Williams' widow, insisted there was more to it.
[170]
When the coroner division of the Marin County聽 Sheriff's Office released Robin Williams'聽聽
[174]
autopsy report two months after he died,聽 it revealed conditions that his family and聽聽
[178]
close friends already knew about and at least聽 one that they didn't, according to ABC News.聽聽
[183]
The comedian had a hard-to-diagnose聽 condition called Lewy body dementia聽聽
[186]
and it could have played a part聽 in his decision to end his life.
[189]
According to the Alzheimer's Association,聽聽
[191]
Lewy body dementia, also known as LBD,聽 is a progressive dementia that leads to:
[196]
"[A] decline in thinking,聽聽
[198]
reasoning and independent function of abnormal聽 microscopic deposits that damage brain cells."
[203]
It's often hard to diagnose whether symptoms聽 are caused by LBD or Parkinson's disease.聽聽
[208]
And since he had depression, it wasn't unusual聽 that the toxicology report found antidepressants聽聽
[212]
in his system, along with caffeine and聽 the Parkinson's drug levodopa. And,聽聽
[217]
although Williams had a history of alcohol and聽 drug abuse, the autopsy found none in his system.
[222]
In addition to LBD, Williams' autopsy report聽 also found changes in his brain that are聽聽
[226]
characteristic of both Alzheimer's and Parkinson's聽 disease. According to The Hollywood Reporter,聽聽
[232]
these changes impacted his behavior聽 in the days leading up to his death,聽聽
[235]
but his wife Susan had revealed that the聽 comedian seemed fine the night before his聽聽
[239]
death. Williams' death came as a shock to not聽 just his family, but his friends and millions聽聽
[244]
of fans around the world who grieved聽 the loss of the beloved entertainer.
