[Russell] Welcome everyone, I'm Russell Alexander.
[2]
We're joined today by our Managing Associate Lawyer, Nafisa Nazarali,
[8]
and our Law Student, Stephanie Brooks, welcome guys.
[12]
Today we have a really exciting video,
[15]
we're going to be announcing who has won our
[20]
Russell Alexander Law Scholarship.
[23]
We're going to be contacting the successful candidate in a few minutes,
[27]
we're going to bring her into our zoom call and let her know
[30]
that she's won $2,500 towards her post-secondary education.
[35]
[Nafisa] So just to give everyone a little bit of a background,
[38]
the Russell Alexander Law Scholarship allows us
[40]
to hear from the brilliant young Canadians applying.
[43]
We received several amazing applications this year
[46]
that made choosing a winner extremely difficult.
[48]
We consulted with our full team to vote on this winner,
[52]
and everyone concluded that Mary's application stood out.
[56]
Her application was really strong. She's a very good student, high GPA,
[63]
contributes to the community, as well as extracurriculars,
[66]
extremely accomplished, and she is well deserving of this scholarship.
[72]
[Stephanie] Yes, and this is a really exciting opportunity.
[77]
So Mary thinks that we're
[79]
asking some follow-up questions to her application,
[82]
but we are actually telling her that she is this year's winner,
[86]
so I'm super excited to see her reaction.
[88]
[Nafisa] I called last year's winner over the phone and
[91]
I'm extremely excited to see the winner's reaction today live on video.
[95]
[Russell] All right, so we're about to introduce Mary.
[97]
I'm kind of excited to ask her about her musical background,
[100]
I know she's big on guitar in addition to having an incredible
[105]
academic achievements and glowing reference letters.
[107]
So, overall a very rounded candidate. I'm going to bring Mary in.
[113]
And we're going to make a start, so let's see what happens.
[117]
Hello, Mary.
[118]
[Mary] Hi there, nice to meet you.
[120]
[Nafisa] Hi, Mary.
[122]
[Russell] I'm Russell Alexander, I'm joined by Nafisa Nazarali
[125]
our Managing Associate Lawyer.
[127]
[Nafisa] Nice to meet you.
[129]
[Mary] Thank you.
[129]
[Russell] And Stephanie Brooks our Law Student,
[133]
who's currently working at the firm.
[135]
[Stephanie] Hi Mary, nice to meet you.
[138]
[Mary] Nice to meet you.
[139]
[Nafisa] So Mary, we wanted to meet with you today
[142]
to ask you a couple of questions about
[143]
your applications and academic achievements.
[147]
So, right now you're currently studying at university, is that right?
[153]
[Mary] Trent university.
[154]
[Nafisa] Okay. What are your current extracurriculars
[157]
right now while at university?
[159]
[Mary] So during the pandemic, it's a little bit scarce
[162]
that I can choose from, however, I am on the waiting list
[165]
to volunteer at the wildlife conservation center,
[168]
and I'm also on the waiting list for Trent Radio.
[171]
[Nafisa] That's amazing. Yeah, you have a lot of experience
[176]
with podcasts, so that would be a good transition right now.
[179]
[Mary] It's very exciting.
[180]
[Stephanie] And how has post-secondary been for you,
[183]
how has university been? I know it's a little bit different
[187]
during a pandemic, but how have you found it so far?
[189]
[Mary] I love it to pieces, it's just such an incredible experience
[193]
and I'm so lucky to be there.
[195]
[Stephanie] Yeah, have you found a huge transition
[198]
from going to high school to university?
[200]
I know, I was a student not too long ago,
[205]
so I know it's definitely a huge step, how's that been for you?
[209]
[Mary] I will certainly agree that it is a little bit more difficult,
[213]
however, I am transitioning well. And you just have to get to know
[217]
the Professors really, and they will treat you well, they are people too.
[222]
[Stephanie] Exactly, exactly. Have you been able to connect
[225]
with some of the other students, anything like that?
[227]
[Mary] Yeah, so although we can't have guests in our rooms,
[231]
we can visit common rooms.
[233]
So I am not completely isolated, which is nice,
[236]
it's not prison at this point in time.
[239]
So I'm making lots of friends, and everybody's coming from
[241]
different walks of life, and I am feeling very enriched in that way.
[244]
[Stephanie] Yeah, that's amazing to hear, it's good to, you know,
[248]
have a good work life balance, not only in university
[253]
but also moving into the, you know, your career.
[258]
I know myself, I've wanted to be a lawyer since I was like 5 years old.
[264]
Yeah, I had a, you know, when you have parent teacher, or sorry, 聽
[268]
parents come in and they talk about their careers to the students.
[272]
One of my classmates, his dad was a Crown Prosecutor,
[276]
and apparently I went home that day and I told my parents;
[279]
I'm going to be a lawyer, and you know, I've stuck with it ever since.
[284]
So, what are your goals, what do you see yourself in law?
[288]
[Mary] My experience was actually very similar.
[292]
We had the day where everybody comes in with their careers.
[296]
And I actually did the exact same thing,
[298]
and it's been my goal ever since.
[301]
I'm just so fascinated with humanity and it's just always
[304]
meant a lot to me, and I'm so competitive and
[306]
I just want to be so successful in the field,
[308]
and it's such a good field to begin with.
[311]
I just have big dreams.
[312]
[Stephanie] That's good.
[314]
[Nafisa] It's good to have big dreams.
[317]
[Russell] I want to talk about work life balances, what's going on there?
[324]
[Stephanie] Yes, so it's really hard when you love your life
[329]
and you love your work, it sort of sometimes tends to blend,
[333]
but it's really good to hear that you're, you know,
[336]
still meeting people and, you know, you're still getting that
[340]
side of the university experience as well as your academics.
[343]
I know your application, your transcript
[346]
from high school was absolutely amazing.
[350]
She is very, very dedicated and that definitely
[353]
shown through in your application.
[356]
[Russell] The Russell Alexander Law Scholarship was extended
[362]
because of the pandemic, lots of uncertainty for students
[366]
in the summer in terms of what was going to happen.
[369]
We've increased it to $2,500 to include a technology bonus
[376]
because I know lots of students, like yourself, Mary,
[380]
are doing classes by Zoom, and so there's new,
[383]
you know, with webcams and laptops or whatever,
[386]
there's new expense associated with that.
[389]
We received several really incredible applications,
[392]
and choosing a winner has been really tough.
[395]
The real reason why we wanted to talk today
[397]
was not to talk to you about your application
[400]
but to inform you that you are our scholarship winner.
[405]
[Mary] Oh my goodness, you're actually kidding, you're joshing me.
[410]
[Russell] No, you have a fantastic all-round application,
[416]
I think it's wonderful, is very balanced in addition to
[421]
very high average coming out of high school.
[426]
Your reference letters were excellent.
[429]
What I found impressive is your extracurricular activities,
[432]
and the guitar and the music playing,
[435]
maybe, can you tell us a bit about your music career?
[437]
[Mary] Yes, I've actually been following your Instagram along
[440]
and I've noticed your massive stack of essays
[442]
and your turntable Tuesdays, so I'm like, oh, we have that in common.
[446]
I started playing Finger-style guitar when I was 5, and
[450]
recently I've gotten more into production and kind of focusing
[453]
on myself as a musician rather than just doing covers of things.
[458]
So I was really lucky to have that experience in grade 12.
[461]
[Nafisa] That's great. So, congratulations, Mary.
[466]
We will be providing you with the $2,500 towards your education,
[471]
and we're really excited that you are the candidate that we've chosen,
[476]
like everyone has said, you really have really great dreams
[481]
and it shines through with your resume that you provided,
[485]
like very accomplished, so congratulations.
[487]
[Mary] I'm so grateful, thank you so much.
[491]
And I really do hope that we can stay in contact in the near future.
[494]
[Russell] Yeah, congratulations, Mary, keep up the great work.
[499]
You've certainly earned this scholarship,
[501]
so you should be very proud of yourself.
[505]
Make sure that you tell your parents.
[506]
[Mary] Yes, for sure.
[510]
[Nafisa] All right, thanks so much, it was very nice meeting you.
[513]
Good luck with everything, Mary.
[515]
[Mary] Thank you, guys.
[516]
[Russell] Bye, bye.
[517]
[Nafisa] Take care, bye.
