Channel: Mind Over Finance

[0]
what's the difference between a
[1]
VantageScore in a FICO score today let's
[4]
take a look at two very popular types of
[6]
credit scores and by the end of today's
[9]
video you'll know exactly why they're
[11]
different please take a quick moment to
[14]
smash that like button because it really
[16]
does help out the channel Thanks as far
[23]
as I know the Vantage score is a credit
[26]
scoring model used by the three credit
[28]
bureaus
[28]
but let's not leave it to chance here's
[31]
a formal definition vantage score is a
[34]
consumer credit scoring model created
[36]
through a joint venture of the three
[38]
major credit bureaus Equifax Experian
[40]
and TransUnion the model is managed and
[44]
maintained by an independent company
[46]
VantageScore solutions LLC that was
[49]
formed in 2006 and is jointly owned by
[52]
the three bureaus vantage score models
[55]
compete with the credit scoring models
[57]
produced by Fair Isaac corporation FICO
[60]
and although this number has changed the
[64]
vantage score is a number from 300 to
[66]
850 with 300 being very poor credit and
[70]
850 being excellent credit what factors
[73]
affect your vantage score this comes
[76]
from the vantage score comm website the
[79]
biggest thing affecting your vantage
[80]
score is total credit usage balance and
[83]
available credit followed by credit mix
[85]
and experienced payment history age of
[89]
credit history and new accounts
[94]
let's look at Wikipedia's definition of
[96]
a FICO score the FICO score was first
[99]
introduced in 1989 by FICO then called
[102]
Fair Isaac and company the FICO model is
[105]
used by the vast majority of banks and
[107]
credit grantors and is based on consumer
[109]
credit files of the three national
[111]
credit bureaus Experian Equifax and
[114]
TransUnion because a consumers credit
[116]
file may contain different information
[118]
at each of the bureau's FICO scores can
[121]
vary depending on which bureau provides
[123]
the information to FICO to generate the
[126]
score FICO scores also range from 300 to
[130]
850 with 300 being very poor credit and
[134]
850 being excellent credit what factors
[138]
affect your FICO score this chart comes
[141]
directly from the myfico.com website so
[144]
check it out when you have a chance but
[145]
it's really nice to see these
[147]
percentages because if you know what
[150]
factor is going to making up your score
[152]
it's really easy to know what you have
[154]
to do in order to change your credit
[156]
score so here's the breakdown 35 percent
[160]
of your score comes from your payment
[161]
history 30 percent amounts owed 15
[166]
percent comes from length of your credit
[168]
history 10 percent from new credit and
[171]
10 percent from your credit mix
[177]
so what's the difference between a
[179]
VantageScore in a FICO score well
[181]
they're kind of like two sides of the
[183]
same coin
[183]
the Vantage score is the mathematical
[186]
scoring model created and jointly used
[188]
by the three credit bureaus to show your
[191]
credit worthiness while the FICO score
[193]
is the credit scoring model created by
[195]
the Fair Isaac corporation to show how
[197]
credit worthy you are both scores are
[199]
types of credit scores but right now it
[202]
feels like the FICO score reign supreme
[204]
I think that's the one that most lenders
[206]
are going to use and it might not always
[209]
be the case but from what I've seen what
[211]
I've experienced it feels like the FICO
[213]
score is more widely used
[218]
a few quick things about Vantage scores
[220]
and FICO scores it looks like both
[223]
companies have similar factors that
[224]
affect your credit scores but they
[226]
probably weigh them differently
[228]
and that's why your vantage score is
[230]
going to be a little different from your
[231]
FICO score and I'm not fully clear on
[233]
this so if you know you can let me know
[235]
in the comment section but I think you
[237]
have a vantage score for Experian a
[239]
vantage score for Equifax and a vantage
[242]
score for TransUnion and the only reason
[244]
I say I don't know is because I haven't
[246]
tried to pull a vantage score from
[248]
Equifax or experience and my TransUnion
[250]
vantage score is provided to me for free
[253]
by my bank and speaking of that looking
[255]
at my own TransUnion scores from both
[257]
companies when my vantage score was a
[260]
768 my TransUnion score was a 772 from
[266]
FICO so yeah they're different but
[269]
they're in the same ballpark
[273]
Vantage scores and FICO scores are two
[276]
different mathematical credit scoring
[278]
models but keep in mind that they're
[281]
sourced from the same information your
[284]
credit history from the three credit
[286]
bureaus so whether you get a vantage
[287]
score or whether you get a FICO score
[289]
just know what yours is I appreciate you
